📜 The text of the Shulchan Arukh — 8 seifim (selections)
The siman opens with a prohibition, narrows it at once with a permission, and closes — in the Rama’s hand — on a mitzva. The three lines below give its two outer bounds; everything else lies between them.
« אין טומנין בשבת אפילו בדבר שאינו מוסיף הבל » (שולחן ערוך או״ח רנ״ז:א)
« אבל בספק חשיכה טומנין בו ואין טומנין בדבר המוסיף הבל אפי׳ מבעוד יום » (שולחן ערוך או״ח רנ״ז:א)
« ומצוה להטמין לשבת כדי שיאכל חמין בשבת כי זה מכבוד ועונג שבת » (הגהת הרמ״א רנ״ז:ח)
1. Opening of the sugya — Shabbat 47b and the mishna
The chapter begins with a list, and it is the list that poses the problem. The mishna states no principle: it names forbidden materials, then permitted ones, and leaves the reader to find what separates the two columns. Two mishnayot are at stake here, and they must be kept apart: the one at Shabbat 47b, which forbids, and the one at Shabbat 49a, which permits.
« טוֹמְנִין בִּכְסוּת וּבְפֵירוֹת, בְּכַנְפֵי יוֹנָה וּבִנְסוֹרֶת שֶׁל חָרָשִׁים וּבִנְעוֹרֶת שֶׁל פִּשְׁתָּן דַּקָּה » (שבת מ״ט ע״א)
Structure of the mishna. The division is binary: on one side olive pulp, dung, salt, lime and sand — wet or dry, it makes no difference; on the other, cloth, fruit, dove feathers, sawdust and flax tow. Between them stands a third, conditional list: straw, grape husks, flocking and grasses are forbidden while they are moist and permitted once dry. It is this third column that yields the criterion, because one and the same material crosses from side to side according to its state.
Rashi says it in two glosses, and he says it in terms of real heat: « גפת - פסולת של בית הבד של שמן שהוא כנוס יחד וחם מאד » (רש״י שבת מ״ז ע״ב ד״ה גפת), and: « לחין - יש בהן הבל הרבה יותר מיבשין » (רש״י שבת מ״ז ע״ב ד״ה לחין). The division the gemara announces — what adds heat against what does not — is the founding dichotomy of the siman.
Rashi had in fact set the frame of the case at the very opening of the mishna: « הבא לסלק קדירה מעל גבי כירה ולטומנה בדבר אחר ואמרו חכמים אין טומנין בדבר המוסיף הבל אלא בדבר המעמיד הבל » (רש״י שבת מ״ז ע״ב ד״ה במה טומנין). We are speaking of someone who removes the pot from its fire in order to wrap it elsewhere: hatmana is not cooking, it is cooking’s neighbour.
2. Ḥakira on מוסיף הבל — physics / manner / gezeira
A threefold ḥakira in the geder of מוסיף הבל: what makes a material belong to the forbidden column?
- Way A — physical and real: mosif hevel denotes a material that produces heat of itself (fermentation, reaction, accumulation). The division rests on the nature of the body. This is the reading supported by Rashi’s glosses above and by the Rambam’s definition.
- Way B — the manner, not the material: what is judged is not the body but the act. The Shulchan Arukh itself turns the permission of seif 8 on this point: what is not done in the manner of a hatmana is not a hatmana, even with fire beneath it.
- Way C — gezeira: the ḥakhamim decreed against hatmana in mosif hevel out of fear of another act, that of stoking. The body of the material is then no more than a signal.
« מִפְּנֵי מָה אָמְרוּ אֵין טוֹמְנִין בְּדָבָר הַמּוֹסִיף הֶבֶל וַאֲפִילּוּ מִבְּעוֹד יוֹם? — גְּזֵירָה שֶׁמָּא יַטְמִין בְּרֶמֶץ שֶׁיֵּשׁ בָּהּ גַּחֶלֶת » (שבת ל״ד ע״ב)
and, on Abaye’s objection, takes it one step further back: « גְּזֵירָה שֶׁמָּא יְחַתֶּה בַּגֶּחָלִים » (שבת ל״ד ע״ב). The chain is therefore twofold: burying in embers in which a coal still lies, and then stoking that coal.
The Rambam (Hilkhot Shabbat 4:1) defines the category in purely physical terms:
« יֵשׁ דְּבָרִים שֶׁאִם טָמַן בָּהֶן הַתַּבְשִׁיל הוּא מִתְחַמֵּם וּמוֹסִיפִין בְּבִשּׁוּלוֹ כְּעֵין הָאֵשׁ » (רמב״ם הל׳ שבת פ״ד ה״א). The material cooks, in the manner of fire.
The Taz (רנ״ז ס״ק א) sets the two tiers side by side, and this is the passage to read before all the rest:
« גזירה שמא ירתיח פי׳ דשמא ימצא קדירתו נצטננה וירתיחנה להטמינה » (ט״ז רנ״ז ס״ק א) ; then « ובמוסיף הבל אפי׳ בע״ש אסור שמא יטמין ברמץ פי׳ אפר עם גחלים וזה אסור דשמא יחתה בגחלים משחשיכה » (ט״ז רנ״ז ס״ק א).
Nafka minot:
- Rocks. The Rama permits burying in them, citing Tosafot and the Mordechai:
« יש אומרים דמותר להטמין בסלעים אע״פ שמוסיפין הבל דמלתא דלא שכיחא לא גזרו ביה רבנן » (רמ״א רנ״ז:ג, בשם תוס׳ ומרדכי ריש פ׳ לא יחפור).
The reason given — what is not common, they did not decree upon — makes sense only if the prohibition is a gezeira (Way C): a material that genuinely heated would go on heating, common or not. - A modern electric heating device. On Way A it is mosif hevel beyond discussion. On Way B the question remains open, since it is perceived as a heat source and not as a wrapping. On seif 8 the Mishnah Berurah recalls that a screen of ash does not remove a case from the category: « ואפילו אם מפזר אפר ע״ג הגחלים מ״מ מוסיף הבל הוא » (מ״ב רנ״ז ס״ק ל״ח). The Aḥaronim discuss such devices; nothing is decided here.
3. Three moments — the root of the gezeira
| Moment | Material that does not add | Material that adds | Root of the prohibition |
|---|---|---|---|
| On Shabbat | Forbidden | Forbidden | Gezeira
| Bein hashmashot | Permitted (רנ״ז:א) | Forbidden according to the Shulchan Arukh; permitted according to the Rambam (פ״ד ה״ב) | סתם קדירות רותחות הן (שבת ל״ד ע״א) |
The most disputed cell of the table is bein hashmashot for a material that adds heat. The Shulchan Arukh forbids it, since he writes that it is forbidden even in broad daylight; the Rambam permits it expressly:
« לְפִיכָךְ מֻתָּר לְהַטְמִין בְּדָבָר הַמּוֹסִיף הֶבֶל בֵּין הַשְּׁמָשׁוֹת » (רמב״ם הל׳ שבת פ״ד ה״ב).
The Beit Yosef reports that the Maggid Mishneh held this reversal untenable: « וכתב שם הרב המגיד שכל האחרונים השיבו עליו שאין דבר זה מתקבל שמבע״י אסור ובין השמשות מותר » (בית יוסף או״ח רנ״ז). The disagreement is no small matter: it bears on which of the two gezeirot goes where, and that is the subject of the next section.
Ḥakira: why is a material that adds no heat forbidden on Shabbat and permitted on the eve?
- Way A — fear of an act of cooking. The gemara gives the reason in so many words: « מִפְּנֵי מָה אָמְרוּ אֵין טוֹמְנִין בְּדָבָר שֶׁאֵינוֹ מוֹסִיף הֶבֶל מִשֶּׁחָשֵׁכָה? Rashi spells out what is feared: « גזירה שמא ימצא קדרתו שנצטננה כשירצה להטמינה וירתיחנה תחילה ונמצא מבשל בשבת » (רש״י שבת ל״ד ע״א). What is dreaded is therefore not the hatmana but the reheating that would precede it. On the eve of Shabbat that reheating would be permitted: there is nothing to fear.
- Way B — a decree bounded to the day itself. For the eve of Shabbat the ḥakhamim decreed only upon mosif hevel. What does not add simply falls outside the scope of the decree on that day.
Abaye’s answer about bein hashmashot leans toward the first reading without forcing it: « סְתָם קְדֵירוֹת רוֹתְחוֹת הֵן » (שבת ל״ד ע״א) — if pots are still boiling at that hour, the fear of reheating falls away of itself. Which of the two ways carries the decree remains debated among the Rishonim.
4. Rashi, the Rambam and Tosafot — the root of the ban on hatmana during Shabbat
The Rambam distributes them exactly the other way round. On what adds, on the eve:
On what does not add, during Shabbat:
« אֲבָל אָסְרוּ חֲכָמִים דָּבָר זֶה גְּזֵרָה שֶׁמָּא יַטְמִין בְּרֶמֶץ וְיִהְיֶה בּוֹ נִיצוֹצוֹת שֶׁל אֵשׁ וְנִמְצָא חוֹתֶה בַּגֶּחָלִים » (רמב״ם הל׳ שבת פ״ד ה״ג).
The Beit Yosef reports this reading in the name of the Ran and of the Rambam’s commentary on the mishna, sets out the Maggid Mishneh’s objection and the Raavad’s construal, and then concludes:
« אלא העיקר כגירסת רש״י וכ״כ הר״ן והרא״ש » (בית יוסף או״ח רנ״ז).
Tosafot — as brought by the Magen Avraham — supply the physical criterion that feeds Way A: « ובתוס׳ דף מ״ח כתבו וז״ל דכירה שלנו אין חומה אלא מחמת האש וכל שעה מתקרר והולך אבל הגפת מוסיף הבל מעצמו » (מ״א רנ״ז ס״ק י״ח, בשם תוס׳ שבת מ״ח). Our stove is warm only from the fire and cools hour by hour; olive pulp, by contrast, heats of itself.
Nafka minot:
- A hatmana whose purpose is not heat. If the prohibition rests on fear of reheating, wrapping in order to protect is not in view. That is precisely what seif 2 rules: « לשום כלים על התבשיל כדי לשמרו מן העכברים או כדי שלא יתטנף בעפרורית שרי שאין זה כמטמין להחם אלא כשומר ונותן כיסוי על הקדירה » (שולחן ערוך או״ח רנ״ז:ב). The criterion stated is the purpose: not like one who buries to warm, but like one who guards.
- Coals left exposed. Tosafot, quoted by the Shiltei Gibborim on the Mordechai and brought by the Magen Avraham, draw a limit from the gezeira itself: « אין טומנין בדבר המוסיף הבל גזירה שמא יטמין ברמץ אבל הכא שהגחלים בעין ליכא למיחש שיטמין בהם » (מ״א רנ״ז ס״ק י״ט, בשם הש״ג במרדכי בשם תוס׳). If the fear is that one bury in ash where a coal lies asleep, then where the coals are visible there is nothing to fear. The Magen Avraham adds at once that this does not exempt one from the rules of shehiya.
5. Hatmana / shemira / shehiya — three categories
| Act | Definition | Its own siman |
|---|---|---|
| Hatmana הטמנה | Wrapping the pot in a material, to keep or to increase its heat | Siman רנ״ז |
| Shemira שמירה | Placing a vessel or material on the food to protect it (mice, dust) | Siman רנ״ז seif 2 |
| Shehiya שהייה | Leaving the pot on a heat source from before Shabbat | Siman רנ״ג |
| Ḥazara חזרה | Returning the pot to the heat source during Shabbat | Siman רנ״ג seif 2 |
Yesod: what separates hatmana from shemira is not the gesture but its intent. Seif 2 says so in its own words — placing vessels on the food to guard it from mice or from dust is permitted, « לשום כלים על התבשיל כדי לשמרו מן העכברים או כדי שלא יתטנף בעפרורית שרי שאין זה כמטמין להחם אלא כשומר ונותן כיסוי על הקדירה » (שולחן ערוך או״ח רנ״ז:ב). The same cloth, laid the same way, changes category according to what is expected of it. The halakhic category is therefore decided by the end pursued, not by the physics of the act alone.
Seif 7 then recalls that the border with shehiya is not watertight either. The Meḥaber rules strictly there: « כל היכא דאסרינן הטמנה אפי׳ בקדירה מבושלת כל צרכה אסרינן ואפי׳ מצטמק ורע לו » (שולחן ערוך או״ח רנ״ז:ז); the Rama brings those who are lenient, and does so precisely by drawing the two categories together: « ויש מקילין ואומרים דכל שהוא חי לגמרי או נתבשל כל צרכו מותר בהטמנה כמו בשהוי » (הגהת הרמ״א רנ״ז:ז).
6. Ḥakira on seif 4 — adding and replacing on Shabbat
« והוא שנתבשלה הקדירה כל צרכו אבל אם אינה מבושלת כל צרכו אפי׳ להוסיף על הכסוי אסור שתוספת זה גורם לה להתבשל » (שולחן ערוך או״ח רנ״ז:ד)
Kashya: if hatmana is forbidden on Shabbat even in a material that adds no heat at all, how can it be permitted, on that same Shabbat, to add a covering or to change it?
Teiruts: the original hatmana was made in broad daylight. What is done on Shabbat does not open a hatmana, it completes one that already exists. The Rambam gives the reason, and it holds in three words — שהרי אינו מוסיף:
« חַמִּין שֶׁטְּמָנָן מֵעֶרֶב שַׁבָּת וְנִתְגַּלּוּ בְּשַׁבָּת מֻתָּר לְכַסּוֹתָן. שֶׁהֲרֵי אֵינוֹ מוֹסִיף » (רמב״ם הל׳ שבת פ״ד ה״ד) — since this adds nothing, there is nothing to fear.
This is no turn of phrase, and the Mishnah Berurah proves it from the other side: that the wrapping came undone after nightfall is not a narrative detail. « אבל אם נתגלה מבעוד יום אסור לכסותו בשבת דהוי ליה כמטמין לכתחלה בשבת » (מ״ב רנ״ז ס״ק כ״ה). Uncovered before nightfall, the wrapping is not remade: that would indeed be a fresh hatmana.
The second limit lies in the Shulchan Arukh itself: the permission holds only if the pot is fully cooked, « והוא שנתבשלה הקדירה כל צרכו אבל אם אינה מבושלת כל צרכו אפי׳ להוסיף על הכסוי אסור שתוספת זה גורם לה להתבשל » (שולחן ערוך או״ח רנ״ז:ד). Both limits say the same thing from two angles: nothing done on Shabbat may add anything.
« אשמעינן תרתי חדא דלא מיבעיא דאם בא להוסיף מוסיף אלא אפי׳ נטל מה שהניח מבע״י דדמי כמטמין לכתחלה » (בית יוסף או״ח רנ״ז בשם הר״ן). Not only may one add, one may remove what was laid on in broad daylight — which looks, after all, like a hatmana begun from scratch.
The Taz (רנ״ז ס״ק ד) does not let the matter rest. After setting out the Beit Yosef’s difficulty on Tosafot and the Rosh, he stops on the Shulchan Arukh’s own wording:
« ומ״מ כאן בש״ע צ״ע במ״ש ונתגל׳ משחשיכ׳ שהוא ל׳ דיעבד כמו שדקדקו כל הפוסקים מל׳ זה במשנה » (ט״ז רנ״ז ס״ק ד). The phrase ונתגלה משחשיכה is the language of bedi’avad; should one conclude that one does not uncover deliberately in order to cover again? The Taz leaves the question on a צ״ע, and we leave it open as he does.
7. Transferring to another pot — seif 5
Seif 5 is brief and its consequence is wide: « אם פינה התבשיל בשבת מקדירה שנתבשל בה לקדירה אחרת מותר להטמינו בדבר שאינו מוסיף הבל » (שולחן ערוך או״ח רנ״ז:ה). The same food, the same heat, the same Shabbat — and yet hatmana becomes permitted again. Why?
« אבל הרמב״ם בפ״ד כתב דהיינו טעמא דשרי מפני שלא אסרו להטמין בשבת אלא דבר חם שהוא בכלי ראשון שנתבשל אבל אם פינהו מותר כמו שהתירו להטמין את הצונן וכן עיקר » (בית יוסף או״ח רנ״ז). The prohibition bears only on the first vessel, the one it was cooked in; once transferred, the food is treated like something cold.
The Taz says the same in one line: «
Rashi, as the Ran reads him, gives a quite different reason, and a narrower one:
« דייק מדברי רש״י דדוקא כשפינן כדי לקררן הוא דשרי » (בית יוסף או״ח רנ״ז). What permits, on this reading, is that the transfer cools: one no longer fears he will heat it, since he has just done the opposite.
Nafka mina between the two reasons: transferring with no declared intent to cool. On the Rambam it is permitted — the criterion is the vessel, not the motive. On the Ran’s reading of Rashi one might have thought otherwise. The Mishnah Berurah settles that case in practice, and in the Rambam’s direction:
« ואין נ״מ אם נתכוין בפירוש כדי לקרר או בסתמא לאיזה סיבה » (מ״ב רנ״ז ס״ק כ״ט).
He goes further still, to the case that seemed bound to undo everything: « ואפילו אם חזר ועירה אותו אח״כ לכלי ראשון שהיה בו נמי שרי » (מ״ב רנ״ז ס״ק כ״ח). Even poured back afterwards into its original pot, the food does not become kli rishon again.
8. Insulating cold food — seif 6 and the ḥiddush of the Aḥaronim
Ḥakira: why is it permitted to wrap something cold, on Shabbat, in a material that adds no heat? At first sight hatmana is forbidden that day without distinction.
Teiruts: the prohibition of hatmana during Shabbat turns on the fear of reheating (Shabbat 34a, see section 3). Over something cold that fear has no object. The Shulchan Arukh puts it by naming the two permitted purposes:
« מותר להטמין בשבת דבר צונן בדבר שאינו מוסיף הבל כדי שלא יצטנן ביותר או כדי שתפיג צנתו » (שולחן ערוך או״ח רנ״ז:ו).
The symmetry stops there: in a material that adds, being cold saves nothing, and neither does the eve of Shabbat — « אבל בדבר המוסיף הבל ואפי׳ להטמין צונן גמור ואפי׳ מבעוד יום נמי אסור » (שולחן ערוך או״ח רנ״ז:ו). This is the sign that mosif hevel is not one degree more of the same fear, but an act of another nature: it produces heat instead of keeping it.
Maḥloket on the reach of the permission. The Beit Yosef infers a restrictive reading from Rashi: wrapping something cold would be permitted only against the sun’s heat, not in order to warm it — « נראה מדבריו דלהטמין את הצונן כדי לחממו אע״פ שהוא מטמין בדבר שאינו מוסיף הבל אסור » (בית יוסף או״ח רנ״ז). The Rambam permits for both purposes, which are the ones seif 6 takes up. The Beit Yosef concludes with the Rambam: « וכ״נ מדברי הגאוני׳ והכי פשט׳ דמילת׳ דבכולי פירקין בהטמנ׳ דלחמם עסקינן וכן עיקר » (בית יוסף או״ח רנ״ז) — the whole chapter deals with hatmana meant to warm, and it alone is in view.
ס״ק ל״א — « ואפילו אדם חשוב שרי » (מ״ב רנ״ז ס״ק ל״א): the permission holds even for an אדם חשוב.
Water or a dish under pillows and blankets: the very case of the seif.
And on seif 5 the same Mishnah Berurah had already set the boundary on the mosif hevel side: «
9. Garments over the pot — seif 8
« כל שהוא בענין שאין הבגדים נוגעים בקדירה אע״פ שיש אש תחתיה כיון שאינו עושה דרך הטמנה שרי » (שולחן ערוך או״ח רנ״ז:ח)
The ḥiddush of seif 8: a material that adds nothing of itself is treated as though it did, once a heat source stands beneath it. The fire does not merely warm the pot: it moves the cloth from one column to the other. And the very same sentence supplies its own boundary — if the garments do not touch the pot, no hatmana has taken place, even with fire beneath.
Ḥakira: is this shift a gezeira, or a real datum — has the material truly changed its nature?
- Way A — real: the fire warms the air between pot and cloth, and the cloth becomes a heat source. The Mishnah Berurah seems to read this way when he refuses to let a screen of ash change anything: « ואפילו אם מפזר אפר ע״ג הגחלים מ״מ מוסיף הבל הוא » (מ״ב רנ״ז ס״ק ל״ח).
- Way B — the manner, and the appearance: what is judged is the act and what it presents to the eye. The Taz draws a practical precaution from it: « דצריך ליזהר שלא יעמיד הקדירה אצל דופן התנור דאז נראה כהטמנה דהא עיקר ההיתר שיש הפסק אויר בין הקדירה לדופן » (ט״ז רנ״ז ס״ק ו). The gap of air is not an executional detail: it is the very ground of the permission.
Both readings are present in the apparatus and we do not decide between them; one may note only that the Beit Yosef frames the permission in terms of manner: « דכיון דאין הבגדים נוגעים בקדרה אינו דרך הטמנה ושרי » (בית יוסף או״ח רנ״ז, בדעת הרא״ש), and adds that « וכ״נ מדברי הר״ן לדעת הר״י והרשב״א » (בית יוסף או״ח רנ״ז).
And if the bottom of the pot touches the coals? Here the Meḥaber and the Rama part ways, and the Mishnah Berurah says so plainly:
« דאם היו שוליה נוגעין בגחלים ס״ל להמחבר דמחמת זה גופא מקרי מטמין בדבר המוסיף הבל ואסור והרמ״א שם בהג״ה ס״ל דעי״ז לא חשיב הטמנה » (מ״ב רנ״ז ס״ק מ״ה).
The Magen Avraham had noted the same split: « ולדברי רמ״א בסי׳ רנ״ג ס״א אפי׳ נוגעים בגחלים שרי כיון שאין טמון בבגדים » (מ״א רנ״ז ס״ק י״ח). For the Rama what decides is the wrapping in cloth, not the contact with the coals.
10. Anti-Karaism and the obligation of ḥamin — the closing seif
« וכל מי שאינו מאמין בדברי החכמים ואוסר אכילת חמין בשבת חיישי׳ שמא אפיקורס הוא » (הגהת הרמ״א רנ״ז:ח)
The polemical ground. A siman of technical detail closes on a sentence that no longer judges an act but a man. The verse at issue is this one:
« לֹא־תְבַעֲר֣וּ אֵ֔שׁ בְּכֹ֖ל מֹשְׁבֹֽתֵיכֶ֑ם בְּי֖וֹם הַשַּׁבָּֽת » (שמות ל״ה:ג).
Read at its strictest, it would forbid not only kindling a fire on Shabbat but drawing benefit from heat produced before it. The rabbinic tradition reads the verse as bearing on the act of kindling, not on the enjoyment of food cooked the day before: hence eating hot food on Shabbat is not merely tolerated — the Rama makes it a mitzva. The Rama gives his sentence two sources, which he names himself — the Baal HaMaor and the Kol Bo.
« וזה לשון בעל המאור בפרק כירה כל מי שאינו אוכל חמין וכו׳ וצריך להזמין לבשל להטמין ולענג את השבת ולהשמין הוא המאמין וזוכה לקץ הימין » (מ״ב רנ״ז ס״ק מ״ט). The formula rhymes its endings in מין — among them חמין, להזמין, להטמין, ולהשמין, המאמין and הימין — and makes the practice of ḥamin a token of allegiance.
A reservation about the reference, which must be stated: the Rama’s parenthesis places the Baal HaMaor in פרק במה טומנין, whereas the Mishnah Berurah writes בפרק כירה. We report both without choosing.
Nafka mina, and a limit not to be forgotten. The Rama’s sentence targets one who does not believe the words of the sages and forbids eating hot food — it is a doctrinal position it names, not an appetite. The Mishnah Berurah states the exception at once:
« אבל מי שמזיק לו החמין מותר לאכול צונן » (מ״ב רנ״ז ס״ק מ״ח ; וכן במ״א ס״ק כ).
One whom hot food harms eats cold, and the Rama’s sentence does not touch him at all. In his ס״ק מ״ט the Mishnah Berurah in fact devotes the bulk of his remarks not to heresy but to the Shabbat prohibitions that such abstention brings about in practice.
11. Modern practical nafka minot
What follows applies the criteria established above to today’s objects, each time with the seif it depends on. These are not rulings: for practice, one asks a rav.
1. The electric slow cooker. The appliance itself belongs to shehiya and to siman רנ״ג, not to our siman: there is no hatmana so long as nothing is wrapped. Wrapping it in a cloth brings the case under seif 8, « אם הוא מכוסה בבגדים אע״פ שהבגדים אינם מוסיפין הבל מחמת עצמן מכל מקום מחמת אש שתחתיהם מוסיף הבל » (שולחן ערוך או״ח רנ״ז:ח): the cloth then counts as mosif hevel because of the heat source beneath it.
2. Aluminium foil on the pot. If it serves as a lid, we are in seif 2: « לשום כלים על התבשיל כדי לשמרו מן העכברים או כדי שלא יתטנף בעפרורית שרי שאין זה כמטמין להחם אלא כשומר ונותן כיסוי על הקדירה » (שולחן ערוך או״ח רנ״ז:ב) — that is shemira. If it hugs the whole pot in order to hold in the heat, it is a hatmana in a material that does not add: permitted on the eve, not on Shabbat itself, « אין טומנין בשבת אפילו בדבר שאינו מוסיף הבל » (שולחן ערוך או״ח רנ״ז:א).
3. The insulated food bag. Placing a hot pot in it before Shabbat is a hatmana in a material that does not add, made in broad daylight: the case of seif 1. Transferring the food into it during Shabbat falls under seif 5, « אם פינה התבשיל בשבת מקדירה שנתבשל בה לקדירה אחרת מותר להטמינו בדבר שאינו מוסיף הבל » (שולחן ערוך או״ח רנ״ז:ה). It remains to check, model by model, that no heating element is built in — which would move the object into case no. 4.
4. The electric heating blanket. A device that actively produces heat is mosif hevel in the full sense. Seif 6 then closes both exits at once — even over something cold, even in broad daylight: « אבל בדבר המוסיף הבל ואפי׳ להטמין צונן גמור ואפי׳ מבעוד יום נמי אסור » (שולחן ערוך או״ח רנ״ז:ו).
5. Removing the bag or the blanket on Shabbat. Covering again what has come uncovered is expressly permitted by seif 4, « אם טמן בו מבעוד יום ונתגלה משחשיכה מותר לחזור ולכסותו וכן אם רצה להוסיף עליו בשבת מוסיף » (שולחן ערוך או״ח רנ״ז:ד). But the permission has its boundary, the Mishnah Berurah’s from section 6: « אבל אם נתגלה מבעוד יום אסור לכסותו בשבת דהוי ליה כמטמין לכתחלה בשבת » (מ״ב רנ״ז ס״ק כ״ה). Uncovering on purpose in order to cover again is precisely what the Taz leaves on a צ״ע.
6. The thermos. Purely physical insulation, with no heat source: the category of the mishna’s cloth. Filled before Shabbat, it is a hatmana in a material that does not add, made in broad daylight. A hot bottle wrapped in a towel is the same case.
7. The blech with a cloth over it. The blech interposes a sheet between fire and pot. If the cloth does not touch the pot, seif 8 permits in so many words: « כל שהוא בענין שאין הבגדים נוגעים בקדירה אע״פ שיש אש תחתיה כיון שאינו עושה דרך הטמנה שרי » (שולחן ערוך או״ח רנ״ז:ח). If it does touch it, we are in the first clause of that same seif, and it is forbidden. The Taz adds his precaution about the gap of air
8. The oven in Shabbat mode. The Rama knows the case of an oven whose mouth is sealed with clay: « והטמנה שעושין במדינות אלו שמטמינים בתנור וטחין פי התנור בטיט שרי לכולי עלמא » (הגהת הרמ״א רנ״ז:ח). The Mishnah Berurah specifies what that sealing is for, and it is not hatmana: « הנה לענין הטמנה אין צריך כלל טיח בטיט גם להרמ״א אלא דבא לומר דבטיח שרי בכל ענין » (מ״ב רנ״ז ס״ק מ״ו). A modern oven, whose door shuts with a latch, is neither sealed nor open: what it is worth here calls for a rav’s opinion and remains an open question on this page.
