The text of the Shulchan Arukh — the three seifim that carry the siman

The siman has ten seifim. Three of them govern all the rest: the first rules out certain wick materials, the third certain oil materials, and the sixth, after permitting everything else, reserves for olive oil the title Here they are word for word; the rest of this page is nothing but a reading of these three lines.

1. Opening the sugya — שבת כ׳ ע״ב and the mishnah “במה מדליקין”

The second chapter of שבת opens with a mishnah that does not argue: it lists. Six materials from which one does not make a wick, then six from which one does not take oil — twelve exclusions set down one after another, without a word of reason.

The break is inside the mishnah itself. The gemara marks it with a beraita that names the exact point where the list changes character, the cut falling between ירוקה and זפת.

Two lists, therefore two defects; and it is Rabba who supplies them, each in its place.

Two defects, not one. The wick is ruled out because the fire creeps along it instead of taking hold — מסכסכת; the oil, because it does not rise along the wick — אין נמשכין. The Shulchan Arukh will take over this division to the letter: seif 1 for wicks, seif 3 for oils. But — and this is the point the lamdan must hold from the outset — neither defect forbids by itself. What forbids is what a person is liable to do in front of a lamp that burns poorly. The Rambam says it in a single clause, at the very end of the passage in which he reports both defects.

A lamp that burns poorly is not ruled out because it burns poorly: it is ruled out because one will tilt it. The Mishnah Berurah opens the siman with that sentence, and the Taz opens his with the same one — a convergence, for a reason given, worth noting.

2. חקירה on the nature of the wick — נאחז or נסרך

Seif 1 does not describe a material: it describes a behaviour of fire — fire that does not take hold, that creeps around, and a flame that jumps. The whole question for the lamdan lies in the status of that description. Is it the definition of the defect, or only the sign of a closed list the Sages fixed?

חקירה: what does the fire does not take hold in it mean?

אופן א — a physical description. What is described is a fact: in a fine-fibred material the fire enters and holds, in wool or hair it runs along the surface. The mishnah's list is then only a record of examples, and any material that behaves this way is ruled out, whether it is listed or not.

אופן ב — a fixed list. The Sages fixed materials; the description that accompanies them explains their choice without extending it. A new material, absent from the list, would not fall under the prohibition, whatever its flame.

אופן ג — the description is the reason, and the reason is a חשש. Neither the material nor the flame rules anything out, but the act a poor flame invites. Where that act is not to be feared, the reason has no grip.

The Rambam writes the wick's defect with a verb, not with a list: the fire creeps along it.

The Admur HaZaken adds to the Mechaber's text two words that lean towards the first אופן: the fire must not only take hold but enter within — ונכנס בתוכו. That is a property of the fibre, not membership in a list. And immediately afterwards he gives the reason of the third אופן.

The same seif closes on a ranking, which likewise presupposes a physical scale rather than a list: of all the permitted wicks, combed flax is the best.

A synthetic thread — polyester, nylon — is on no list. On אופן ב there would be nothing to say; on אופנים א and ג everything depends on its flame and on the act that flame invites. The siman does not decide this case, and it is one to put to a rav.

The cotton wick of commercial candles, by contrast, is the very material seif 1 names — צמר גפן — and raises no difficulty on any of the three אופנים.

3. חקירה on the nature of the oil — נמשך and steady burning

Seif 3 opens on one condition: the oil must be נמשך אחר הפתילה, drawn after the wick. The Rambam writes it in the same terms.

חקירה: what is an oil that is “drawn”?

אופן א — the ascent. It is a matter of the path: the oil must rise along the fibres to the flame. What is solid at ordinary temperature — pitch, wax — does not rise, and that is why it is ruled out.

אופן ב — the rate. It is a matter of steadiness: the oil must feed the flame at an even rate. A material that rises in surges leaves an unsteady flame even though it rises.

Seif 4 at first seems to confirm אופן א, then contradicts it. It considers an unfit oil to which a little olive oil has been added, so that it now is drawn — and it rules it out all the same.

If the defect is that the oil does not rise, the oil that now does rise ought to be permitted. The seif says the opposite in the very sentence in which it grants that it rises.

The prohibition was never the physical fact but the גזירה laid upon it. The Mishnah Berurah and the Taz each give their own, and they do not guard against the same slip: one fears either that he will kindle these oils unmixed, or that he will omit to add the permitted oil.

What seif 5 confirms from the other side. Melted fat and fish entrails do become permitted by the addition of a little permitted oil. The difference is not in the physics — both begin to rise — but in the rank of the גזירה: a material already ruled out by a גזירה is not forbidden a second time. The reasoning is the Taz's, and it is he who spells it out — his ס״ק ד is the longest of the five he gives on this siman; the phrase דה״ל גזיר׳ לגזיר׳ is its point, not the whole of it. The Mishnah Berurah ס״ק כ״ב condenses it, almost word for word.

The Admur HaZaken applies the same measure to a case in which no one would suspect a defect: oil dregs, even of olive oil, are ruled out — not for what they are, but because they do not rise.

4. The four חששות of seif 3 — שלהבת, נמשך, ריח רע, ריח נודף

Seif 3, in a single sentence, lines up four grounds of exclusion. The first two are those we have just read; the last two no longer bear on the lamp but on the person sitting before it. The Shulchan Arukh states them without separating them.

4. ריח נודף — צרישמא יסתפק ממנו — he will take some of the oil for his own useמכבהשו״ע או״ח רס״ד:ג · שו״ע הרב רס״ד:ו

All four are גזרות of the same form — שמא — and not two physical facts followed by two fears. What distinguishes them is not their nature but their terminus: three end in a melakha (מבעיר twice, מכבה once), the fourth in a loss of עונג. The Admur HaZaken arranges them in exactly that way, within a single seif, giving each its own reason.

A fifth reason, which the Mechaber did not adopt. For צרי the gemara gives a second reason, which the Mishnah Berurah reports: this oil flies off, catches on the walls of the house, and a man, alarmed for his property, will come to extinguish. The Magen Avraham, at his ס״ק ט, draws from it a consequence for stopping up an oven with wood.

5. שמן זית מצוה מן המובחר — the reason the poskim give, and two others joined to it

Seif 6 permits every oil, then singles out one. It does not write that olive oil is obligatory: it writes Nothing is invalid without it; something is better with it.

Three reasons circulate. They do not carry the same weight, and it matters to say which one the poskim of this siman actually give.

טעם א — physical, and it is the Beit Yosef's. He takes it from Tosafot: olive oil is drawn after the wick better than any other. The reason for the preference is thus the same as the reason for the exclusions of seif 3 — the siman has one criterion only, and here it pushes it to its highest point.

The Mishnah Berurah gives the same reason, in the same words; and the order of fallbacks that follows he does not draw of himself — he reports it expressly from the Matteh Moshe,

טעם ב — the link to the Mikdash. It does exist in the sources, but it is not given there as the reason for olive oil. What the gemara says is that the wicks and oils ruled out for Shabbat are ruled out in the Mikdash as well. And what the Mishnah Berurah reports in the name of the Levush is that the requirement to kindle the greater part of the wick is modelled on the kindling of the Menorah.

The Admur HaZaken, for his part, ties olive oil not to the Menorah but to the Chanukah lamp, and refers to siman

טעם ג — the motif of the olive tree. Israel is called an olive tree by the prophet. This is a motif of דרש, present in the tradition; it is given by none of the poskim of this siman as the reason for מצוה מן המובחר. It is added to reason א; it does not replace it.

If the reason is physical (טעם א), the preference shifts with the quality of the flame: the Admur HaZaken and the Mishnah Berurah do in fact bring in the clearness of the light, not the dignity of the material. The Admur HaZaken must be followed step by step, though: where he prefers the other oils to tallow and wax candles it is first לְפִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ אוֹסְרִים אוֹתָן — because some forbid them — and only at the next step does he write וּמִצְוָה יוֹתֵר בְּנֵר שֶׁל שַׁעֲוָה מִבְּשֶׁל חֵלֶב, לְפִי שֶׁאוֹרוֹ צָלוּל יוֹתֵר (שו״ע הרב רס״ד:י״ב). Were the reason the Mikdash or the דרש, such a ranking would have no place.

6. The הבהוב of the wick — the custom the Rama reports

Seif 9 is short and negative: there is no obligation to singe the wick before lighting it. The Rama, on the same line, nevertheless reports that it is done.

If the seif comes to say that הבהוב is not needed, what does a gloss add by saying that it is done? Either the custom contradicts the seif, or the seif says nothing the custom could contradict.

The two speak of different things. The seif speaks of the דין: nothing is missing from the mitzvah without הבהוב. The gloss speaks of the custom: a singed wick catches better. The Admur HaZaken writes exactly this division, in two steps, and gives the custom his assessment of it.

Since this is a custom and not a דין, it holds for today's wrapped candle as well, and the Mishnah Berurah adds a reason of conduct: let the man do it in advance, so that the woman not be delayed when the time to light arrives.

7. שיטות on paraffin candles

Wax is named in seif 3 among the materials ruled out. The commercial candle is made of wax — or of paraffin, which stands in its place. How is it, then, that we kindle it?

חקירה: is the paraffin candle the oil ruled out in seif 3, or something else?

The answer is in the siman itself, four seifim further on. Seif 7 considers wax wrapped around the wick, and permits it.

The Taz and the Mishnah Berurah give the same account of the reversal: what seif 3 rules out is the material placed in a vessel with a wick stuck into it; wrapped around the wick, it is drawn normally.

The Mishnah Berurah says it still more plainly when commenting on seif 3 itself: our candles fall under seif 7, and they are permitted.

The Admur HaZaken writes the same distinction, and to name it he uses the words like our candles — that is, he is already speaking of the wrapped candle.

The limit, which must not be dropped. The permission bears on the wrapped material, not on the wick. If the wick itself is of a material that is ruled out, the wrapping is of no avail. The Mishnah Berurah and the Magen Avraham say so, and the Admur HaZaken gives the reason: the wick of itself does not burn well — and we are back at שמא יטה.

A remark of the Mishnah Berurah that is seldom quoted. Commenting on the מצוה מן המובחר of seif 6, he adds a thought of his own — ונ״ל — about the candle of his day: its light being clear, and it not being the kind of lamp one tilts even on a weekday, it seems to him preferable to the wax candle, and perhaps even to all the oils, since the reason of שמא יטה certainly has no grip on it. He takes nothing away from seif 6: he measures the question by the reason, which is the very manner of this siman.

8. שיטות on electric light and LED

What the siman does not say must be said first. The ten seifim, the Beit Yosef, the Magen Avraham, the Taz and the Mishnah Berurah speak of a פתילה and a שמן. The electric lamp appears nowhere in them, and could not have. The question belongs to the Acharonim of the last century; what follows only sets out its two sides, and does not exempt anyone from asking his rav.

חקירה: what does the mitzvah require — light, or a flame?

אופן א — light. The siman's two criteria — that the fire take hold, that the oil rise — are not requirements in themselves: they are, as we have seen, the two roads by which שמא יטה is feared. Before a lamp one does not tilt, neither has any grip, and what remains of the mitzvah is the light and the עונג it gives.

אופן ב — a flame. The siman does not describe light of any kind: it describes a flame drawn from a wick by an oil. To remove the wick and the oil is not to remove a חשש — it is to remove the very thing the siman speaks about.

Where the poskim stand. The Acharonim are divided, and the question is not closed. Several allow, where there is no other way — hospital, travel — kindling an electric lamp, and discuss the blessing; others hold that one does not fulfil the mitzvah without a flame. Chabad practice is to kindle a flame, paraffin candle or olive oil. This page reproduces none of these responsa word for word and does not decide between them: each is to be read in its own teshuvah, and the practice to be asked of one's rav.

On אופן א, electricity is not a fallback but a lamp that fully satisfies the reason of the siman; on אופן ב, even the best electric light does not meet the object of the mitzvah. The distance between the two is not measured in comfort but in whether the blessing is recited — which is why it is not settled alone.

9. Practical נפקא מינות today

1. Ordinary paraffin candles. This is the case of seif 7 as the Taz, the Mishnah Berurah and the Admur HaZaken read it: the material is wrapped around the wick. The reservation, and it is in the sources — that the wick itself be of a permitted material

2. Olive oil with a floating wick. This is the case of seif 6: מצוה מן המובחר, for the very reason the Beit Yosef gives — olive oil rises better than any other.

3. Electric lamp, LED. An open question, treated in section 8. This page does not answer it.

4. Gel candles. The question arises in exactly the siman's own terms, and that is what makes it legible: is the gel wrapped around the wick as in seif 7, or placed in a vessel with a wick inside it as in seif 3? The Mishnah Berurah supplies the criterion at his ס״ק כ״ד; applying it to a particular product means looking at that product, and is to be asked of a rav.

5. Scented candles. The חשש of seif 3 regarding צרי does not bear on the scent that spreads, but on the taking — שמא יסתפק ממנו, that one take some of the material for one's own use. The question is therefore whether the scented material of a candle invites that act. It is not decided here.

6. הבהוב of a new wick. Custom and not obligation: that is the division of seif 9 and of the Admur HaZaken's seif י״ד. The Mishnah Berurah notes that it is done for the wrapped candle too (מ״ב רס״ד:כ״ח).

7. Mixed oils. The siman is clear, and in both directions: adding a little permitted oil to an oil that is ruled out is of no avail (seif 4), except for melted fat and fish entrails (seif 5), on the גזירה לגזירה reasoning that the Taz and the Mishnah Berurah explain. And oil dregs, even of olive oil, remain ruled out

8. Yahrzeit candle. For this siman it is a wrapped paraffin candle like any other, and seif 7 applies to it. What the siman adds on its account is not the material but the vessel: the Mishnah Berurah, in his last entry, rules the old earthenware lamp off the table, and the Admur HaZaken devotes his last seif to it.
