1. The source of the sugya —

The whole siman starts from a scene in Pesachim. Rav Huna sees a man drinking water before Havdalah and warns him in the name of a baraita taught in the name of Rabbi Akiva: whoever tastes anything before making Havdalah, his death is by askara. The gemara then adds at once, without arguing the point, that the scholars of the school of Rav Ashi were not particular about water. The source of the prohibition and the source of the exception thus lie in the same line, and the whole siman lives off that tension.

Two main shitot:

The decision retained: it is forbidden to eat until after Havdalah over the cup; water remains permitted. The Magen Avraham says so explicitly, in the name of the Abudraham and the Ran, at the very place where the Shulchan Arukh permits melachah after the formula המבדיל:

In other words, what the formula releases — melachah — and what it does not release — eating — do not coincide. That is the knot sections 5 and 6 will take up again.

2. חקירת היסוד — what is the reason for the prohibition of eating

The prohibition of eating before Havdalah: is it a gezerah, lest a man be drawn on, forget, and come to think he no longer needs Havdalah? Or is it a prohibition in itself on deriving benefit from the world so long as Havdalah has not been said?

If it is a gezerah, it bears only on what carries the weight of a consumption, and water falls outside it. If it is a prohibition of benefit in itself, water should be included like everything else. Yet the Shulchan Arukh excepts water explicitly, in the very first line of the siman:

So the first branch prevails — and the gemara’s exception about the scholars of Rav Ashi finds its place there. How far that reasoning reaches is still debated among the Acharonim, and the siman does not close the question.

3. פורס מפה — the shitot on interrupting the meal

The phrase comes from the gemara in Pesachim, and the first thing to see is that it is said there of Kiddush, not of Havdalah: Rav Yehudah in the name of Shmuel rules that the halachah is neither like Rabbi Yehudah nor like Rabbi Yosei, but that one spreads a cloth and makes Kiddush. It is the Shulchan Arukh, in seif א, that carries the gesture over to Havdalah — פורס מפה ומבדיל וגומר סעודתו — and it gives it only as the יש אומרים.

What the cloth does: it marks an interruption. While it lies there, there is as it were no meal; the man makes Havdalah, the cloth is removed and the meal resumes. It is the same mechanism as at Kiddush, carried to the other end of Shabbat.

And the practice? The Rama closes the discussion of seif א the other way: one who began eating while it was still day need not interrupt at all.

Another practice is reported: instead of the cloth, to say המבדיל without a berachah. But one must look at where the Shulchan Arukh places that formula: not in seif א, to interrupt a meal, but in seif י, and for melachah alone — the Magen Avraham cited above states that even after saying it, eating remains forbidden until Havdalah over the cup. For the meal, then, the cloth remains the classic form of interruption.

4. “חוץ ממים” — where the leniency comes from

The reason for the exception: water is not reckoned a consumption. It does not gladden, it does not draw a man on, it does not keep him at the table — and that is why it is permitted even before Havdalah. The gemara itself gives this as a fact rather than a reason: The Shulchan Arukh turns it into written law.

Other drinks: wine and any other beverage are named in the prohibition of seif א — או אפי׳ לשתות יין או שאר משקין — precisely because they carry the weight of a consumption.

Coffee and tea: the Acharonim discuss them, and the Shulchan Arukh says nothing, these drinks being later than it. The discussion turns on whether they belong with water or with the שאר משקין — and whether they are sweetened enters into that assessment. The siman does not decide, and neither do we.

5. Melachah before Havdalah — the parallel with Kiddush

The gemara in Pesachim derives three things from the episode of Ameimar, and those three are the foundation of the siman: one who made Havdalah in the tefillah must still make it over the cup; it is forbidden to eat before making Havdalah; and one who did not make it at the close of Shabbat goes on making it through the week.

Note what this gemara does not say: it speaks of eating, it does not speak of melachah. The prohibition of melachah before Havdalah is not stated there; it is the Shulchan Arukh that opens it in seif י, and the commentaries of the siman weigh its force — the Mishnah Berurah will write further on, on the Rama’s gloss to that same seif, that by Torah law melachah would be permitted without Havdalah and that the requirement to wait is a takanah of the Sages (מ״ב רצ״ט:ל״ח).

The parallel with Kiddush, at the other side of Shabbat: just as it is forbidden to eat before Kiddush on Friday night, it is forbidden to eat — and, in seif י, to do melachah — before Havdalah. Havdalah is the closing of Shabbat: until it has been made, the day has not yet left its place. It is this symmetry, and not a verse, that carries the siman.

6. “המבדיל בין הקודש ובין החול” — the formula that permits

Seif י gives the way out: one who must do melachah before having made Havdalah in the tefillah says the formula, without a berachah, and does his melachah. The text Sefaria gives places the words הקודש ובין החול in brackets — they are an editorial completion, not a secured reading of the Mechaber, and we leave them in their brackets rather than erase them.

What the formula does: it is a declaration of separation without being a berachah. The Magen Avraham gives the technical reason, and it is short: neither the Name nor Kingship is said in it.

And women: the Rama draws the practical consequence from the same place. Women, who ordinarily do not say Havdalah in the tefillah of arvit, are to be taught to say this formula before doing melachah.

And the two halves must be held together: the formula releases melachah, it does not release eating — the Magen Avraham ס״ק י״ג cited in section 1 says so in the same place.

7. Until the end of Tuesday — where that limit comes from

The gemara states no limit in days: Rava rules that one who did not make Havdalah at the close of Shabbat goes on making it all week.

The limit עד סוף יום ג׳ is therefore not the language of the gemara: it comes from the Rishonim, and the Shulchan Arukh retains it in seif ו.

Why three days: the Mishnah Berurah gives the reason, and it is structural — the first three days still belong to the Shabbat that has passed, and from then on one belongs to the Shabbat that is coming.

The three days are therefore Sunday, Monday and Tuesday (the close of Shabbat already being Sunday). After that term, Havdalah is no longer made up.

The lamp and the besamim: these are not made up at all — seif ו reserves them for the close of Shabbat.

And the Mishnah Berurah gives the reason, which is worth reading because it explains the difference: the berachah over fire belongs to the close of Shabbat because that is the time of its creation, and the one over besamim because it settles the soul pained by the departure of the neshamah yeterah. Both motives are tied to the moment itself, not to the obligation of Havdalah.

8. Havdalah at the table and the wine it covers

Seif ז lays down that one who makes Havdalah over wine at his table thereby covers the wine he will drink during the meal: he will not have to repeat the berachah over it — and this even if he made Havdalah before washing his hands.

The foundation: a single berachah of בורא פרי הגפן covers all the wine of the meal; it is said over the cup of Havdalah and it holds for what follows. The seif at once reports the contrary view — וי״א דלא פטור — that the exemption holds only if he washed his hands before making Havdalah.

נפקא מינה (the Rama’s gloss on seif ז): if he made Havdalah first, he must say the closing berachah after it — the berachah me’ein shalosh, that is על הגפן — because that cup does not attach to the meal that follows.

The Rama himself names his source: It is to this gloss, and not to the Mechaber’s rule of exemption, that Tosafot are attached here.

9. The obligation of women and lighting a lamp

Women (the Rama’s gloss on seif י): they are bound by Havdalah, the Shulchan Arukh having laid this down earlier — נשים חייבות בהבדלה כשם שחייבות בקידוש (שו״ע או״ח רצ״ו:ח), where a dissenting view is reported immediately afterwards. But since they ordinarily do not say Havdalah in the tefillah, the Rama asks that they be taught to say המבדיל בין קודש לחול before doing melachah.
Lighting a lamp right after “ברכו”: the lenient practice rests on the distinction the Rama reports in the name of Rabbeinu Yeruham — that the formula would be required only for a full melachah, such as writing or weaving, and not for merely lighting a lamp or carrying from one domain to another. The Rama reports the practice, then departs from it.

And the Mishnah Berurah shows that the Rama is not alone in departing from it: he refers to the Magen Avraham, who casts very strong doubt on this practice, and to the Beit Yosef, who asks whence one would draw a distinction between one melachah and another.

10. Practical nafka minot and the line of decision

QuestionWhat the siman retains
Eating before HavdalahForbidden — except water (רצ״ט:א)
A meal begun by day that runs into the nightOne continues, per the practice the Rama retains (רצ״ט:א)
בורא פרי הגפן over the cup of HavdalahNot required if he already said the berachah beforehand; the seif reports the contrary view (רצ״ט:ג)
He forgot entirelyUntil the end of Tuesday: wine and Havdalah. Lamp and besamim, no (רצ״ט:ו)
Melachah before HavdalahForbidden; permitted if he made Havdalah in the tefillah (רצ״ט:י)
המבדיל בין קודש לחול without a berachahReleases melachah — not eating (מג״א ס״ק י״ג)
WomenBound by Havdalah; they are taught the formula (רצ״ט:י)
Bread on the table before HavdalahIt is covered (רצ״ט:ט)

The governing yesod: siman רצ״ט is the siman of the in-between. The close of Shabbat is no longer Shabbat and is not yet an ordinary day. Havdalah is what closes that passage: until it has been said, one does not eat, does not drink — water excepted — and does no melachah. That water alone passes is no detail: it is the sign that the prohibition bears on the consumption that holds a man, not on benefit as such. Once Havdalah has been said, the man is released to the world outside.
