1. The axiom: the חשיבות of the piece fit to be served — it is not nullified
The starting point:
Siman 101 deals with a piece that carries a status of importance. A חתיכה הראויה להתכבד בה לפני האורחים — a (whole) piece worthy of being presented before guests — is, like a בריה (siman 100), a davar chashuv: it is not nullified, even in a thousand (אפילו באלף), even when it is forbidden for benefit (אסור בהנאה), and even when its prohibition is only דרבנן. But this "not nullified" status is itself דרבנן (Taz s.k. 1-2) — by Torah law it would be nullified — so in case of doubt (is it such a piece? did the mixture occur?) "מְקִלִּין, מִשּׁוּם דַּהֲוֵי סְפֵקָא דְּרַבָּנָן" → we are lenient (להקל) (seif 1).

💡 The marker: this siman does not speak of "how much is needed to nullify" but of when a piece is too "important" to be nullified at all. The key is the חשיבות — a subjective/social importance (one would serve it to guests), distinct from the בריה (a whole natural entity, siman 100). And since this "not nullified" is דרבנן, the slightest doubt tips toward leniency (seif 1).
2. The 3 reflex questions
■ מחמת עצמה? (is the prohibition intrinsic) — is the piece forbidden by itself (נבילה, בשר בחלב) or only through an absorbed taste (טעם שבלעה) / כדי קליפה? Intrinsic → candidate for the status; absorbed taste alone → it is nullified (seif 2).
↓ we look at worthiness
■ IS IT "FIT TO BE SERVED"? (ראויה להתכבד) — would one serve it as-is before guests? Feathered fowl, a whole lamb / a piece too large, fat of the קנה, gizzard and innards → not worthy (they are nullified). It all depends on the custom of the place and the era (מנהג המקום והזמן) — Rama (seif 3-5).
↓ we look at integrity
■ IS IT WHOLE? (שלם davka) — the status holds only as long as the piece is whole. Cut (נחתך) or crushed (נתרסק) → it is nullified (even after the mixture, even if recognizable), EXCEPT if it was cut on purpose to nullify it (seif 6).
⚖ The מחמת עצמה condition (seif 2)
The "not nullified" status is granted only to a piece forbidden by itself: a נבילה, or meat that became בשר בחלב (the meat itself is forbidden). But a permitted piece that merely absorbed a taste of a prohibition (טעם שבלעה מאיסור), or a piece forbidden only כדי קליפה (the thickness of a peel), is not "worthy" in the sense of חשיבות: it is nullified (Taz s.k. 4 — an absorbed taste has no such importance).
3. The master grid: when a piece "is not nullified"
An absolute must to memorize. Basis: Mehaber seifim 1-7, read with the Rama (seif 3-5), the Taz (s.k. 1-2, 4-6) and the Shach (s.k. 1).

📌 Key reading: first ask is the prohibition מחמת עצמה (otherwise it is nullified); then is it fit to be served (per the מנהג המקום); finally is it still whole (cut/crushed → nullified, except cut on purpose). And never attribute the cut to the forbidden piece to "rescue" things through doubt (אין תולין — seif 7).
4. The 5 golden rules
- "אֲפִלּוּ בְּאֶלֶף לֹא בְּטֵלָה". A חתיכה הראויה להתכבד is not nullified, like a בריה, even forbidden for benefit, even דרבנן; but doubt → leniency (להקל), since this status is דרבנן (Mehaber + Taz seif 1).
- מחמת עצמה davka. Only an intrinsic prohibition (נבילה, בשר בחלב) confers the חשיבות; an absorbed taste / כדי קליפה is nullified (Mehaber + Taz seif 2).
- "ראויה להתכבד" = tied to the מנהג המקום והזמן. Feathered fowl, lamb, fat of the קנה, gizzard, innards → not worthy; but a goose, a large goose gizzard, etc. per the custom (Mehaber + Rama seif 3-5).
- שלם davka. Cut / crushed → it is nullified (even after the mixture, even if recognizable); EXCEPT if cut on purpose to nullify it — אין מבטלין איסור לכתחילה (Mehaber seif 6).
- אין תולין — מִמַּה נַּפְשָׁךְ. One does not attribute the cut to the forbidden piece in order to permit everything; the doubt never fully benefits, and the prohibition is identified by the fat / the cut (Mehaber + Taz seif 7-9).
5. Mnemonic — the "SHALEM" memory aid
"SHALEM" — after the שלם (whole) of seif 6
- SHachivut: the "important" piece is not nullified, like a בריה (seif 1).
- As such (מחמת עצמה): only the intrinsic prohibition counts; an absorbed taste is nullified (seif 2).
- Laid before guests (ראויה להתכבד): per the מנהג המקום (seif 3-5).
- Entire (שלם): cut / crushed → it is nullified, except on purpose (seif 6).
- Mimah-nafshach: אין תולין — one does not "rescue" through doubt (seif 7).

6. The 4 classic pitfalls
❌ Pitfall 1 — Forgetting that this "not nullified" is דרבנן: one remembers "a חתיכה הראויה להתכבד is not nullified even in a thousand" but forgets the second half of seif 1: this status is only דרבנן (by Torah law it is nullified). So any doubt — is it really such a piece, did the mixture occur — tips toward leniency: "מקילין, משום דהוי ספקא דרבנן" (Taz s.k. 1-2).
❌ Pitfall 2 — Confusing an "intrinsic" prohibition with an absorbed taste: only a prohibition מחמת עצמה (נבילה, בשר בחלב — the meat itself is forbidden) confers the חשיבות. A permitted piece that merely absorbed a taste of a prohibition, or a piece forbidden כדי קליפה, is nullified — it is not "worthy" on that account (seif 2; Taz s.k. 4).
❌ Pitfall 3 — Thinking that "worthy" is a fixed datum: "ראויה להתכבד" depends on the custom of the place and the era (מנהג המקום והזמן). Feathered fowl (מחוסר מעשה), a whole lamb, a piece too large, fat of the קנה, gizzard and innards → as a rule not worthy; but a whole goose, the goose skin, a large goose gizzard may be worthy where others are not (Rama seif 3-5).
❌ Pitfall 4 — Wanting to "rescue" the mixture by cutting or through doubt: the moment a worthy חתיכה is cut (נחתך) or crushed (נתרסק), it is nullified by majority — even after the mixture and even if still recognizable — EXCEPT if it was cut on purpose to nullify it (אין מבטלין איסור לכתחילה — then it is not nullified). And if a piece was cut without knowing which one, one does not attribute (אין תולין) the cut to the forbidden piece: מִמַּה נַּפְשָׁךְ, the doubt never fully benefits (seif 6-7).
