📑 Outline of the synthesis

  1. The axiom: one never counts without "stopping in purity"
  2. The 3 reflex questions: a valid hefsek / has she seen / has she counted properly
  3. The master grid: the 6 families of this siman
  4. The 5 golden rules
  5. Mnemonic — the "HEFSEK" memory aid
  6. The 4 classic pitfalls

  8. Final flashcard

1. The axiom: one never counts without "stopping in purity"

The starting point:

Before she can count the seven clean days (ז׳ נקיים) that lead to the טבילה, the woman must first stop seeing and establish it: this is the הפסק טהרה, the stopping bedikah. As long as she has not "stopped in purity" (תפסוק בטהרה), she remains בחזקת טמאה and the count cannot begin. The Mehaber (seif 1) opens: "תספור לה שבעה ימים מהיום שתפסוק בטהרה". The whole siman comes down to two linked requirements: (a) a valid hefsek, then (b) seven clean days without interruption, sealed by בדיקות.
ConceptWhat it meansPractical consequence
הפסק טהרהThe stopping bedikah, done the day the blood ceases, near בין השמשותWithout it, one does not begin to count (seif 1)
שבעה נקיים7 "clean" days counted from the day after the stoppingChecked and consecutive; any ראייה סותרת (seif 1, 10)
בחזקת טמאהWithout a valid hefsek, she remains presumed טמאהOne never counts back from a true hefsek בטהרה (seif 5)
💡 The marker: this siman is not "theoretical" — it is the operational heart of taharat hamishpaha. Everything in it is למעשה: the when (near sunset), the how (the cloth, the depth, daylight), the how many (two בדיקות a day לכתחילה) and the what-if (a stain, a פולטת). These acts are learned from a Rav or a moret kalla: one does not deduce them alone from a summary.

2. The 3 reflex questions

■ HAS A VALID HEFSEK BEEN DONE? (הפסק טהרה) — did she, on the day of the stopping, do a pure stopping bedikah near בין השמשות, donning a חלוק בדוק (a checked white cloth)? If she saw only one day → a מוך דחוק present throughout בין השמשות is also required. Without a hefsek בטהרה → one does not count (seif 1-3).
↓ we move to the count
■ ARE THE 7 DAYS "CLEAN"? (נקיים & בדיקות) — does she count from the next day, with 2 בדיקות/day (morning + near בין השמשות) לכתחילה, on a clean white cloth? Has she seen blood — even on the eve of the 7th day? Any ראייה סותרת and forces one to start over (seif 4-10).
↓ we look at the special cases
■ IS THERE A COMPLICATION? (פולטת / error / person) — was there a union before the טבילה (פולטת שכבת זרע → count from the 5th day)? A counting error? Is she blind, deaf-mute or impeded? These cases are settled with a Rav (seif 6-8, 11-13).

⚖ The criterion of the hefsek (seif 1-3, 5)

A hefsek is valid only if it "stops in purity": a pure bedikah on the day of the stopping, near בין השמשות (לכתחילה), on a חלוק בדוק free of any כתם. For a single day of seeing → the מוך דחוק (tight tampon) kept throughout בין השמשות is added; Rama: בדיעבד, if she checked near בין השמשות and found herself טהורה, even without the מוך the whole time → that suffices. If the בדיקת ההפסק was טמאה and then טהורה a few days later → she remains בחזקת טמאה until a true hefsek (seif 5).

3. The master grid: the 6 families of this siman

An absolute must to memorize. Basis: Mehaber and Rama, seifim 1-13, read with the Taz, the Shach, the Sidrei Tahara and contemporary pesika (Taharat haBayit, Shevet haLevi, Badei haShulchan).

FamilyThe essentialThe marker
1 · The הפסק טהרה The stopping bedikah the day the blood ceases, near בין השמשות; one must stop בטהרה before counting; the count begins the next day No hefsek → no count (seif 1)
2 · The מוך דחוק (a single day) Seeing for one day, ceased that same day → מוך דחוק present throughout בין השמשות; Rama: בדיעבד a pure bedikah near בין השמשות suffices The single-day case (seif 2)
3 · The לבנים & the count At the hefsek: חלוק בדוק (free of כתם), checked sheets at night; from the next day she counts the 7; Rama: a מנהג כשר to wash (מים חמין) and don white Wash, lévanim, then count (seif 3)
4 · The בדיקות of the 7 days 2 בדיקות/day (morning + near בין השמשות) לכתחילה; בדיעבד a single one over the 7 suffices; she who multiplies is משובחת (even with a וסת קבוע) Sealing each clean day (seif 4, 9)
5 · The cloth & the persons Old white linen / cotton / wool, clean and soft; inserted "עד מקום שהשמש דש", examined in daylight; the blind woman shows a friend; the deaf-mute is checked by others The tool of the בדיקה and the cases of persons (seif 6-8)
6 · Continuity & פולטת שכבת זרע 7 consecutive days — seeing סותר all (even on the eve of the 7th); פולטת within the 6 עונות סותרת → count from the 5th day; counting error → wait 6 עונות; clean thoroughly What nullifies the count (seif 10-13)
📌 Key reading: the six families come down to a single thread — a hefsek that stops in purity, then seven clean days sealed by בדיקות and never interrupted by a ראייה. The פולטת שכבת זרע and the counting error are the two "invisible" pitfalls that push back the start of the count; they are settled with a Rav.

4. The 5 golden rules

  1. "תפסוק בטהרה" before counting. On the day of the stopping, a pure stopping bedikah near בין השמשות; without a hefsek בטהרה, she remains בחזקת טמאה and does not count (Mehaber seif 1, 5).
  2. A single day → מוך דחוק. If she saw only one day and ceased that same day, a tight tampon present throughout בין השמשות; Rama: בדיעבד a pure bedikah near בין השמשות suffices (Mehaber + Rama seif 2).
  3. Lévanim, then count from the next day. חלוק בדוק and checked sheets; Rama: a מנהג to wash (מים חמין) and don white; the count of the 7 begins the next day (Mehaber + Rama seif 3).
  4. 2 בדיקות/day לכתחילה; one בדיעבד; multiplying = משובחת. Morning and near בין השמשות; if forgotten, a single בדיקה over the 7 days is valid; multiplying the בדיקות is praiseworthy (Mehaber seif 4, 9).
  5. Seeing סותר all; after a union, count from the 5th day. A ראייה even on the eve of the 7th nullifies (start over hefsek + 7); the פולטת within the 6 עונות סותרת → start on the 5th day; every question goes to a Rav (Mehaber seif 10-11).

5. Mnemonic — the "HEFSEK" memory aid

"H-E-F-S-E-K" — after the sequence of the siman
The ladder of the בדיקות (seif 4, 9)

6. The 4 classic pitfalls

❌ Pitfall 1 — Counting without a true hefsek: one believes it is enough that the blood has "ceased". Yet the count is valid only if she stopped in purity: if the בדיקת ההפסק was טמאה and she checks herself טהורה only a few days later, she remains בחזקת טמאה and all she "counted" in the meantime does not hold — a new hefsek בטהרה is needed (seif 5).
❌ Pitfall 2 — Forgetting the מוך דחוק of the single day: she who saw only one day and ceased that same day does not settle for an ordinary bedikah: a מוך דחוק (tight tampon) kept throughout בין השמשות is required (seif 2). The Rama is lenient בדיעבד (a pure bedikah near בין השמשות suffices), but the לכתחילה remains the מוך — to be applied per the Rav's instruction.
❌ Pitfall 3 — Believing a stain during the 7 days is "nothing": the 7 נקיים must be consecutive and clean; seeing blood — even on the eve of the 7th dayסותרת all and forces one to start over (hefsek + 7). The Rama mentions only a קולא (י"א: in the first 3 days, a כתם is not made lighter תולין as in the following days — cf. the כתמים, siman 190). One never decides alone on a color: one shows the Rav (cf. siman 188).
❌ Pitfall 4 — Ignoring the פולטת שכבת זרע and the counting error: after a union (before the טבילה), the woman פולטת שכבת זרע within the 6 עונות: this סותר the day, so she begins to count only from the 5th day (יום ה' לשימושה — cf. siman 193). Likewise, if she made a counting error (immersed then had relations by mistake) → she waits 6 עונות then counts (seif 11-12). The Rama notes (seif 13) that today we are no longer expert and one does not rely on cleaning alone.

7. Recap by the 6 families — the 13 seifim

FamilySeifimThe essential
1 · The הפסק טהרה1She counts 7 days from the day after the day she stopped seeing. On the day of the stopping she checks herself to "stop in purity" (תפסוק בטהרה); this בדיקה is near בין השמשות (לכתחילה). Without stopping בטהרה, one does not begin to count.
2 · The מוך דחוק2If she saw only one day and ceased that same day → מוך דחוק (tight tampon) present throughout בין השמשות. Rama: בדיעבד, if she checked near בין השמשות and found herself טהורה, even without the מוך the whole time → it suffices.
3 · Lévanim & the count3On the day of the stopping she dons a חלוק בדוק (free of כתם), places checked sheets at night, and from the next day begins to count the 7 נקיים. Rama: a מנהג כשר to wash (מים חמין) and don white (לבנים) at the time of the hefsek — at minimum to wash the "בית הקמטים".
4 · The בדיקות of the 7 days4-5, 9לכתחילה 2 בדיקות/day (morning + near בין השמשות); בדיעבד a single one over the 7 (1st, 7th or middle) suffices. If the בדיקת ההפסק was טמאה then טהורה a few days later → בחזקת טמאה until a true hefsek. She who multiplies the בדיקות is משובחת, even with a וסת קבוע.
5 · The cloth & the persons6-8All the בדיקות (hefsek and 7 days) → old white linen, cotton or white wool, clean and soft, inserted deeply into the חורים וסדקים "עד מקום שהשמש דש", examined in daylight, against any אדמומית. The blind woman checks herself and shows a friend. Deaf-mute / impaired / mentally ill → other lucid women check them and fix their וסתות.
6 · Continuity & פולטת10-13The 7 נקיים must be consecutive — seeing blood even on the eve of the 7th day סותרת all (start over hefsek + 7). Rama: י"א that in the first 3 days a כתם is not made lighter (תולין). The פולטת שכבת זרע during her counting days, within the 6 עונות of the union, סותרת that day → after a union, start on the 5th day (cf. 193). Counting error (immersed then had relations by mistake) → wait 6 עונות then count. She cleans thoroughly (מוך/בגד or מים חמין); Rama: י"א that today we are no longer expert and do not rely on it.

⚖ The reflex in 3 questions

  1. Is there a true hefsek? A pure stopping bedikah near בין השמשות (and a מוך דחוק for a single day); without it, she remains בחזקת טמאה.
  2. Are the 7 days clean? 2 בדיקות/day לכתחילה, consecutive; any ראייה, even on the eve of the 7th, סותרת all.
  3. Is there a complication? פולטת = start on the 5th day; counting error = 6 עונות; an impeded person = the help of others — always with a Rav.
