1. The axiom: the taste of meat in the milk — tasting or sixty
The starting point:
Siman 92 deals with an already-cooked mixture: a kazayit of meat falls into a pot of boiling milk (or the reverse). The question is no longer "cold / hot contact" as in Siman 91, but: is there a taste of the forbidden substance, and is there enough to nullify it? The Mehaber (seif 1) accepts a non-Jew's tasting (טועם העובד כוכבים / קפילא): no taste → permitted "אֲפִלּוּ בְּפָחוֹת מִשִּׁשִּׁים". But the Rama (cross-reference siman 98) rules: "אין אנו נוהגין לסמוך אטעימת עובד כוכבים" — we do not rely on his tasting, and we require 60 in every case.
| Path | Mehaber (Sephardi) | Rama (Ashkenazi custom) |
| Tasting by a non-Jew (קפילא) | Accepted: no taste → permitted even without 60 | Not accepted (cross-ref siman 98) |
| Nullification by sixty (ס׳) | Required once the piece has re-emitted | Required "בכל ענין" (in every case) |
| The piece from which the taste comes | Forbidden in any event | Forbidden in any event |
💡 The marker: this siman no longer speaks of "cold / hot / salted" but of טעם + ביטול. The piece that brought the taste remains forbidden (it absorbed the forbidden substance); the rest of the pot depends on the taste or on 60. And all this assumes the piece was removed before it re-emitted the milk it had absorbed, i.e. before the pot stopped boiling (seif 1).
2. The 3 reflex questions
■ HOW MUCH? (טעם / ששים) — is there a taste of the forbidden substance (a non-Jew tasting, for the Mehaber) or 60 times the forbidden substance (for the Rama, and for all once the piece has re-emitted)? If yes → permitted; if not → forbidden (seif 1-2).
↓ we look at the timing
■ WHEN WAS IT REMOVED? (קודם שתנוח מרתיחה) — as long as the pot boils, the piece has not yet re-emitted the absorbed milk. Removed in time → we assess the taste it gave. Too late → it released all the absorbed milk: 60 is required (seif 1).
↓ we look at the mixing
■ DID ONE STIR / COVER? (ניער / כיסה) — stirred from start to finish or covered from the moment of the fall → the whole pot combines (הכל מצטרף) against the forbidden substance. Otherwise, the affected piece is assessed only against what is in contact (seif 2).
⚖ The צירוף of the whole pot (seif 2)
We assess against everything in the pot (pieces, vegetables, broth / מרק, spices / תבלין) if one of these conditions holds: one stirred from start to finish; one covered from the moment of the fall; or (Rama, in the name of the Raavad and the Maggid Mishneh / Rambam) one neither stirred nor covered at all. But if one stirred/covered only at the end, not immediately → only the contact counts. And the custom (והכי נהוג): stirring helps only if one stirred at the very moment of the fall of the forbidden substance.
3. The master grid: tasting, sixty and the צירוף
An absolute must to memorize. Basis: Mehaber seifim 1-2, read with the Rama (siman 98), the Taz (s.k. 1-2) and the Shach (s.k. 3).
| Situation | Decisive criterion | Result |
| Kazayit of meat in boiling milk, removed in time (Mehaber) |
The non-Jew's tasting |
🟢 Milk permitted even < 60; but the piece forbidden |
| Piece not removed, it re-emitted the absorbed milk |
Sixty (ס׳) |
🔴 Forbidden unless there is 60 |
| Our custom (Rama, siman 98) |
Sixty "בכל ענין" |
🟡 60 required in every case |
| Stirred start to finish / covered from the fall |
צירוף of the whole pot |
🟢 Everything combines; if 60 → only the piece forbidden |
| Neither stirred nor covered at all |
צירוף (Raavad / Rambam) |
🟢 60 against the drop → only the piece forbidden |
| Stirred/covered only at the end, not at the fall |
No צירוף (custom) |
🔴 Only the contact is assessed |
| Drop of milk on the wall, facing the broth |
60 against the drop (מפעפעת) |
🟡 As if fallen into the dish → 60 suffices |
| Drop of milk on the wall, on the empty part (כנגד הריקן) |
60 there, else the spot is forbidden |
🔴 The spot forbidden; pouring through it → everything forbidden |
📌 Key reading: in taste / 60, first ask was the piece removed in time (otherwise 60 is mandatory). For the drop on the wall, look at facing the broth or on the empty part, and fire side or not. And everywhere, the piece that absorbed the taste itself becomes forbidden (חתיכה נעשית נבילה).
4. The 5 golden rules
- "אין אנו נוהגין לסמוך אטעימת עובד כוכבים" — we do not rely on the non-Jew's tasting; 60 is required "בכל ענין" (Rama seif 1, cross-ref siman 98).
- Remove the piece "קודם שתנוח מרתיחה". While it boils, it has not re-emitted; too late → 60 mandatory (Mehaber seif 1).
- ניער / כיסה = צירוף. Stirred start to finish, or covered from the fall → the whole pot combines (Mehaber + Rama seif 2).
- "חתיכה נעשית נבילה". The piece that absorbed the taste becomes entirely forbidden; 60 is needed against the whole piece to nullify (Mehaber seif 3).
- חנ״נ: always in bassar be-halav; elsewhere, by custom. For other prohibitions, the Mehaber applies חנ״נ only in bassar be-halav; the Rama extends it to every prohibition (under conditions), but not in יבש ביבש nor for a utensil (Mehaber + Rama seif 4).
5. Mnemonic — the "KISA" memory aid
"K-I-S-A" — after the כיסה (cover) of seif 2
- Kapila / 60: tasting (Mehaber) or sixty (our custom) — this is the measure.
- Instant of removal: take the piece out before the pot stops boiling.
- Sums up (combines)? ניער / כיסה at the moment of the fall → the whole pot combines.
- Assimilated into נבילה: the piece that absorbed the taste itself becomes forbidden (חנ״נ).
The ladder of the drop on the wall (seif 5-7)
- כנגד הרוטב (facing the broth) → 60 against the drop suffices (מפעפעת)
- fire side (כנגד הריקן) → permitted: the fire burns and dries it
- כנגד הריקן away from the fire → the spot forbidden; pouring through it → forbidden
- שעת הדחק (Shabbat eve) → permitted via 60 even off the broth (Rama)
6. The 4 classic pitfalls
❌ Pitfall 1 — Confusing the Mehaber's tasting with our custom: the Mehaber permits the milk "even with less than sixty" only on the strength of a non-Jew who tastes. In practice (Ashkenazi, and largely Sephardi) we do not rely on that: 60 is required "בכל ענין" (Rama seif 1, cross-ref siman 98). Never read seif 1 as a leniency applicable as-is.
❌ Pitfall 2 — Forgetting "חתיכה נעשית נבילה": one computes 60 against the drop of milk, but the piece that absorbed it becomes entirely נבילה; cooked afterward with others, one needs 60 against the whole piece, not only against the drop (seif 3). If it is "ראוי להתכבד" (worthy of being served to guests, cross-ref siman 101) and is not recognizable, all the pieces are forbidden (the broth itself remains permitted).
❌ Pitfall 3 — Extending חנ״נ everywhere: "the piece becomes נבילה" in the full sense applies by law only in bassar be-halav. For other prohibitions, it is by custom (Rama), and only if the forbidden substance is stuck on (דבוק) or the piece is out of the broth; in יבש ביבש no prohibition makes חנ״נ, and a utensil that absorbed does not make חנ״נ (60 against the absorbed suffices — seif 4, cross-ref siman 98).
❌ Pitfall 4 — The drop on the wall and the fire side: a drop of milk on the pot from the outside is no trifle. Facing the broth → 60 against the drop suffices (it "מפעפעת לפנים"). On the empty part (כנגד הריקן), away from the fire side → the spot becomes forbidden, and pouring the dish through that spot forbids it. On the fire side, by contrast, "האש שורפו ומייבשו" → permitted (for a drop). A new pot → 60 always suffices (Rama).

7. Recap of the 9 seifim — one line each
| Seif | Topic | The essential |
| 1 | טעימת קפילא and the removal | Kazayit of meat in boiling milk: tasting by a non-Jew → no taste, permitted even < 60; the piece stays forbidden. All this if removed before the pot stops boiling; otherwise 60 mandatory. Rama: we do not rely on the tasting → 60 in every case (siman 98). |
| 2 | ניער / כיסה and the צירוף | Taste of milk in the affected piece → 60 in the piece, else forbidden. Stirred start to finish, or covered from the fall, or (Raavad/Rambam) neither one → the whole pot combines. Custom: stirring helps only at the moment of the fall. |
| 3 | חתיכה נעשית נבילה | The forbidden piece becomes a whole נבילה; cooked with others → 60 against the whole piece. Recognizable → discard it; unrecognizable and ראוי להתכבד → all the pieces forbidden, the broth permitted (siman 101). |
| 4 | חנ״נ: bassar be-halav vs others | By law, חנ״נ only in bassar be-halav. Rama: by custom for every prohibition, if stuck (דבוק) or piece out of the broth. לח בלח: no חנ״נ (outside bassar be-halav), 60 against the prohibition. יבש ביבש → no חנ״נ. Utensil → no חנ״נ (siman 98, 99:15). |
| 5 | טיפה on the wall; כנגד הרוטב / הריקן | Drop of milk on the pot from outside: facing the broth → 60 against the drop (it diffuses). On the empty part without 60 → the spot forbidden; pouring through it → dish forbidden. Remedy: do not touch it until it cools. Rama: if the pot is new → 60 always suffices (siman 94). |
| 6 | The custom כנגד הריקן; fire side | We forbid כנגד הריקן, but only on the side not facing the fire; fire side → permitted (the fire dries it). Small amount only; a lot → no leniency except facing the broth with 60. Rama: pour from the other side; same rule for a second cooking. |
| 7 | שעת הדחק; תתאה גבר; עירוי / קלוח | שעת הדחק (Shabbat eve) → permit via 60 even off the broth (Rama). Liquid spilled not near the fire = כלי שני → pot forbidden but dish permitted (תתאה גבר). Continuous stream = עירוי → cold pot forbidden כדי קליפה; dish permitted. Hot pot / כלי ראשון → all forbidden even with a cold stream (siman 91). Drop on the lid = like facing the broth if it started to boil. |
| 8 | זיעה (the steam) | A milk pan under a meat pot: the steam rises, is absorbed and forbids. Rama: if there was milk → 60 in the dish against the milk. Only if uncovered, from the food itself, and יד סולדת in the steam at contact; otherwise permitted. Covered → all permitted (but le-chatchila to be careful). |
| 9 | נר של חלב (tallow candle) | A candle of חֵלֶב (tallow, not חָלָב milk) whose drop falls on a utensil → גרידה (scraping) suffices. But hot melted tallow (חלב מהותך חם) → הגעלה is required. |
8. Final flashcard
| Question | Reflex answer | Source |
| Meat in boiling milk, removed in time? | Taste (Mehaber); for us: 60. The piece stays forbidden | Mehaber seif 1; Rama (siman 98) |
| Piece not removed in time? | Forbidden unless there is 60 | Mehaber seif 1; Taz s.k. 1 |
| Did one stir or cover? | At the moment of the fall → the whole pot combines | Mehaber + Rama seif 2 |
| The piece absorbed the taste? | It becomes a whole נבילה; 60 against the whole piece | Mehaber seif 3 |
| חנ״נ for another prohibition? | By custom if stuck / out of the broth; not in יבש ביבש nor a utensil | Rama seif 4; Shach s.k. 3 |
| Drop of milk on the wall facing the broth? | 60 against the drop suffices (מפעפעת) | Mehaber seif 5 |
| Drop כנגד הריקן, on the fire side? | Permitted (the fire dries it); else the spot forbidden | Mehaber seif 6 |
| Steam of a milk pan under the meat? | Uncovered + יד סולדת → forbidden (60); covered → permitted | Mehaber + Rama seif 8 |
| Drop of a tallow candle on a utensil? | Scraping (גרידה); hot melted tallow → הגעלה | Mehaber seif 9 |
⚖ The reflex in 3 questions
- How much and taste? The non-Jew's tasting (Mehaber) or 60 (our custom). The piece that absorbed the taste stays forbidden.
- When was it removed, did one stir/cover? Removed before the boiling stopped; stirred/covered at the moment of the fall → the whole pot combines.
- Where is the drop? What kind of steam? Facing the broth = 60; כנגד הריקן away from the fire = spot forbidden; uncovered steam + יד סולדת = forbidden.
