Siman ר״ט · When a blessing goes wrong
דיני טעות וספק בברכת היין — the wording the mouth betrayed (על דעת לומ׳ שהכל וטעה ואמר בפה״ג), the retraction within the time of an utterance (תוך כדי דיבור), the table one exempted without knowing it, and the doubt that will not lift (נסתפק אם בירך אם לאו)

✦ ❖ ✦
The preceding simanim said which blessing to say, and how to say it. This one asks the question nobody enjoys asking: and what if it went wrong? I picked up a glass of beer, I began the blessing meaning to say "shehakol", and my mouth said "borei pri hagafen". Or I caught myself at once. Or — the commonest case of all — I simply no longer know whether I blessed. Hebrew text, English translation and an explanation of the ג׳ seifim, together with a section of practical cases.

A blessing has a beginning and an end, and between the two something may happen. The beginning is the words ברוך אתה ה׳ אלהינו מלך העולם — the Name and the kingship, which this siman calls עיקר הברכה, the body of the blessing. The end is the wording that names the food: The whole siman turns on one question: when the beginning and the end no longer agree, which of the two makes the blessing? Seif 1 poses the question, seif 2 shows what happens when it is caught in time, and seif 3 leaves wine behind for a principle that holds everywhere: in doubt, one does not bless. We study here at the level of principle; for personal practice one follows one's Rav.
📑 Plan of the study
A. טעות שלא נתקנה (seif 1) — intention against conclusion, and the two directions of the error
B. חזרה תוך כדי דיבור (seif 2) — the immediate retraction, and the table in the gloss
C. ספק ברכות להקל (seif 3) — doubt, and the single exception
1-3. Practical cases and comprehension questions
A. טעות שלא נתקנה — intention and conclusion
עִיקַּר הַבְּרָכָה — "the body of the blessing". The phrase is the siman's own: Every blessing opens with the same six words, which say nothing about the food; only the ending names it. Hence the question: at the moment I pronounced the Name I had the right wording in mind — is that enough if my mouth then said the wrong one? The Gemara asks it in two words and leaves it unresolved:
Seif 1: he took a cup of beer or of water, and he opened and said "Baruch ata Hashem Elokeinu Melech ha'olam" intending to say "shehakol", and he erred and said "borei pri hagafen" — we do not make him repeat it, because at the moment he mentioned the Name and the kingship, which are the body of the blessing, he had in mind only the blessing that befits that kind. And there are those who say that if he took a cup of beer or water thinking it was wine, and opened "Baruch ata Hashem Elokeinu Melech ha'olam" intending to say "borei pri hagafen", and then remembered that it was beer or water and concluded with "shehakol" — he has fulfilled his obligation. Gloss: and all the more so if he had wine in his hand thinking it was water, and opened intending to say "shehakol", then remembered and blessed "borei pri hagafen" — that he has fulfilled it, since even had he concluded with "shehakol" he would have fulfilled it (Tur).
The first case: the intention was right, the mouth slipped. This is word for word the Rambam's language: לקח כוס של שכר בידו והתחיל הברכה על מנת לומר שהכל וטעה ואמר בורא פרי הגפן אין מחזירין אותו (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ח הלכה יא), who adds והואיל ולא היה בעקר הברכה טעות אף על פי שטעה בסופה יצא ואין מחזירין אותו (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ח הלכה יא). summary: for him what decides is what the heart was aiming at when the Name was said.
But the Mishna Berura does not follow the Mechaber here: זהו דעת הרמב״ם אבל רוב הפוסקים וכמעט כולם חולקים עליו והסכימו דלא אזלינן בתר דעתו כיון שבפיו הוציא ברכה שאינה ראויה לאותו המין לא יצא ומחזירין אותו וכתבו האחרונים דכן יש להורות (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ט:א). summary: the great majority of the poskim hold that a blessing is measured by what left the mouth and not by what was in the mind; in this first case, therefore, one says the blessing again — and so one should rule.
The second case is the reverse, and there all agree: ויש אומרים שאם לקח כוס שכר או מים וסבור שהוא של יין ופתח ברוך אתה ה׳ אלהינו מלך העולם על דעת לומ׳ ב״פ הגפן ונזכ׳ שהוא שכר או מים וסיים שהכל יצא (שו״ע או״ח ר״ט:א), on which the Mishna Berura writes וכן הלכה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ט:ב), and explains its force: היינו אע״ג דבשעה שהזכיר שם ומלכות שהוא עיקר הברכה היה דעתו על ברכה שאינה ראויה לאותו המין כלל אפ״ה כיון שחתימת הברכה הזכיר בפיו כהוגן יצא בדיעבד (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ט:ג). summary: the intention was wrong, the conclusion is true — and it is the conclusion that prevails.
The gloss adds the easiest case of all: וכל שכן אם היה בידו יין וסבור שהוא מים ופתח אדעתא לומר שהכל ונזכר ובירך בפה״ג שיוצא (רמ״א או״ח ר״ט:א), שהרי אף אם סיים שהכל יצא (רמ״א או״ח ר״ט:א) — and the Mishna Berura spells it out: ונמצא שאף לפי מחשבתו היתה ברכה הראויה לאותו המין (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ט:ד). summary: over wine, "shehakol" would have served in any case; there is no error here to repair. The reasoning comes from the Tur:
Seif 2: he took a cup of beer or water and blessed "Baruch ata Hashem Elokeinu Melech ha'olam borei pri hagafen", and within the time of an utterance he remembered that he had erred and said "shehakol nihyeh bidvaro"; and so his whole utterance was "Baruch ata Hashem Elokeinu Melech ha'olam borei pri hagafen shehakol nihyeh bidvaro" — he has fulfilled his obligation. Gloss: and if there were others drinking as well, with wine before them, and his intention was also upon wine — for he thought there was wine in his cup and blessed "borei pri hagafen", and it was found afterwards that his cup held water or beer — then when he goes on to drink wine he need not bless again, and he is discharged by the blessing he said over his cup even though it was said in error: for his intention was to drink other wine as well, and moreover he discharged the others drinking there, and therefore his blessing is a true blessing (responsum of the Maharil siman 92; Beit Yosef, end of siman 206).
An utterance is not sealed until the time of an utterance has run out: לקח כוס של שכר או מים ובירך ברוך אתה ה׳ אלהינו מלך העולם בפה״ג ותוך כדי דיבור נזכר שטעה ואומ׳ שהכל נהיה בדברו (שו״ע או״ח ר״ט:ב), and then וכן היתה אמירתו ברוך אתה ה׳ אלהינו מלך העולם בפה״ג שהכל נהיה בדברו יצא (שו״ע או״ח ר״ט:ב). summary: what is added at once is not added beside the blessing but inside it; the whole is read as a single sentence, and that sentence ends properly.
The Mishna Berura widens its reach: היינו אפילו בעת תחלת הברכה היה סבור שהוא יין ונמצא שהיה תחלת הברכה וסופה שלא כהוגן אפ״ה כיון שעקר תוך כ״ד וסיים כהוגן יצא (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ט:ה). summary: even if from the very opening he believed he held wine — so that neither the beginning nor the end was correct — the retraction made in time saves everything.
And it sets the limit: אבל לאחר כדי דיבור לא מהני עקירתו וחוזר ומברך (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ט:ו); and above all, this leniency has a domain: ודע דהא דמקילינן בדיעבד בתוך כדי דיבור דוקא בברכות דרבנן אבל בבהמ״ז שהוא דאורייתא (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ט:ו). summary: one retracts only in blessings instituted by the Sages; a blessing of the Torah is not repaired in this way. The Beit Yosef gives the same reasoning about the immediate retraction:
The gloss opens the case out to the whole table: The Mishna Berura notes that the blessing had been said on their behalf: וכונתו היתה להוציא גם האחרים בברכתו (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ט:ז), and that this is enough to save it: ואפילו לא היה דעתו בהדיא לשתות יותר ורק בסתמא כיון שהוציא אחרים בברכתו שיהיו יכולים לשתות היין שלפניהם נמצא שלא היתה ברכתו לבטלה ולכן מותר גם לו לשתות שאר יין (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ט:ח). summary: a blessing that served someone was not said in vain — and what was not said in vain need not be said again.
Seif 3: all blessings — if one is in doubt whether one blessed or not, one does not bless, neither at the beginning nor at the end, except for Birkat haMazon, because it is of the Torah.
The principle, and it reaches far beyond the blessing over wine: The Mishna Berura gives the reason: משום שהן מד״ס וספיקא דרבנן לקולא (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ט:ט). summary: blessings are an institution of the Sages, and a doubt about an institution of the Sages is resolved on the side of abstaining.
"Neither at the beginning nor at the end" — that is, neither the blessing said before eating nor the one that follows it. The Rambam writes likewise: מפני שהן מדברי סופרים (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ח הלכה יב). summary: doubt creates no obligation, and therefore gives no licence to pronounce the Name.
And the single exception: The Rambam states it in its own place: The division goes back to the Gemara, which states it about other texts: ספק קרא קריאת שמע, ספק לא קרא — אינו חוזר וקורא (ברכות כ״א ע״א). summary: what is of the Torah is treated strictly in doubt; what is of the Sages is treated leniently.
The Mishna Berura attaches a condition to the exception: והוא שאכל כדי שביעה דאז הוא מחוייב מן התורה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ט:י), and it gives the conduct for the abridged blessing of the preceding siman: דמי שאכל כדי שביעה מפירות או תבשיל של שבעת המינים ונסתפק לו אם בירך אחריו יאכל עוד מאותו המין שיעור כזית ויברך אחריו ויוציא עי״ז גם הספק שלו (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ט:י). summary: rather than bless upon a doubt, one puts oneself back into a certain obligation — one eats another kazayit, and blesses on an obligation about which there is no longer any doubt.
The siman in one sentence: a blessing is judged by what left the mouth, not by what was in the mind — בתר חתימה; as long as the time of an utterance has not run out, the mouth can still correct itself; and when one no longer knows, one says nothing, because blessings are of the Sages — except Birkat haMazon, which is of the Torah.
Practical cases
Case 1 — I said "borei pri hagafen" over a glass of beer
Situation: at the table I take a glass of beer, I begin the blessing meaning to say שהכל נהיה בדברו, and my mouth goes on with בורא פרי הגפן. I do not correct myself. Must I bless again?
Conduct: the Mechaber brings that he need not — לקח כוס של שכר או של מים ופתח ואמר ברוך אתה ה׳ אלהינו מלך העולם על דעת לומ׳ שהכל וטעה ואמר בפה״ג אין מחזירין אותו (שו״ע או״ח ר״ט:א) — because מפני שבשעה שהזכי׳ שם ומלכות שהם עיקר הברכה לא נתכוין אלא לברכה הראוי לאותו המין (שו״ע או״ח ר״ט:א). But the Mishna Berura rules otherwise: זהו דעת הרמב״ם אבל רוב הפוסקים וכמעט כולם חולקים עליו והסכימו דלא אזלינן בתר דעתו כיון שבפיו הוציא ברכה שאינה ראויה לאותו המין לא יצא ומחזירין אותו וכתבו האחרונים דכן יש להורות (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ט:א). summary: in its view the wording that came out is false of beer, and a false blessing does not discharge the obligation. For practice, one follows one's Rav.
Case 2 — I correct myself at once
Situation: the same glass and the same slip — but this time I hear my mistake as it comes out, and I go straight on with And what if I only react a few seconds later?
Beyond that span, no: And note that this flexibility does not apply to a blessing of the Torah: For practice, one follows one's Rav.
Case 3 — I no longer know whether I blessed
Situation: the meal is over, I stand up — and I realise I no longer know whether I said the blessing. Over a fruit? Over bread, after eating my fill?
For Birkat haMazon, the reverse: חוץ מבהמ״ז מפני שהוא של תורה (שו״ע או״ח ר״ט:ג), on the condition the Mishna Berura recalls: והוא שאכל כדי שביעה דאז הוא מחוייב מן התורה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ט:י). And for the abridged blessing after the seven species it points to a neat way out: For practice, one follows one's Rav.
Comprehension questions
Check your understanding:
- What does עיקר הברכה mean in seif 1, and why is that phrase the hinge of the Rambam's whole argument?
- Why are the two directions of the error not equivalent — right intention with wrong conclusion, and wrong intention with right conclusion (seif 1)?
- What makes the addition of שהכל נהיה בדברו in seif 2 count as part of the first blessing rather than as a second one?
- Why does retracting תוך כדי דיבור not suffice in a blessing of the Torah (מ״ב ר״ט:ו)?
- Seif 3 speaks of "all blessings": what in their origin justifies abstaining — and what sets Birkat haMazon apart?
