Siman ר״י · How much must one eat in order to bless?
האוכל פחות מכזית מה דינו — the measure that opens the after-blessing (כזית for what is eaten, רביעית for what is drunk), the thing eaten whole (בריה), the doubt the siman leaves open about wine, and the one who tastes his dish without eating it (הטועם את התבשיל)

✦ ❖ ✦
The preceding simanim said which blessing to say, and what becomes of a blessing that has gone wrong. This one asks the question that comes before all the others: from what quantity is there anything to bless over? One raisin, a sip of water, a spoonful of soup to check the salt — is that called eating? Hebrew text, English translation and an explanation of the ב׳ seifim, together with a section of practical cases.
Subject: The measure below which there is no after-blessing —

Two blessings frame what one eats: one before, one after. This siman shows that they are not alike at all. The one before has no measure: the smallest mouthful calls for it, because it is not the account of a meal but the permission to touch it — שאסור ליהנות מן העולם הזה בלא ברכה. The one after does have a measure, because it is modelled on a verse that speaks of eating and being satisfied: below a כזית for what is eaten, a רביעית for what is drunk, no act of eating has taken place, and there is nothing to conclude. Seif 1 sets that threshold and leaves two doubts open; seif 2 changes the criterion and speaks not of quantity but of intention. Here we study at the level of principle; for personal practice one turns to the ruling of one’s Rav.
📑 Plan of the study
A. כזית ורביעית (seif 1) — the threshold of the after-blessing, and why there is none beforehand
B. בריה (seif 1, continued) — the thing eaten whole, and the two doubts the siman leaves open
C. הטועם את התבשיל (seif 2) — tasting is not eating
1-3. Practical cases and questions for review
A. כזית ורביעית — the threshold of the after-blessing
כְּזַיִת — "like an olive": the standard measure of the act of eating throughout the Torah. רְבִיעִית — "a quarter" (of a log), the standard measure of the act of drinking. These two words govern the whole of seif 1. The Mishna Berura says where the first comes from: ואין אכילה בכל התורה פחותה מכזית (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:ד). Below it the mouth has moved, but the Torah does not call that eating — and the after-blessing, which derives from ואכלת ושבעת וברכת, has nothing to rest upon.
Seif 1: one who eats less than a kazayit, whether of bread or of other foods, and one who drinks less than a reviit, whether of wine or of other beverages — he blesses beforehand the blessing appropriate to that species, and afterwards he does not bless at all. And there are those who are in doubt, saying that over something that is as it was created — for example a grape berry or a pomegranate seed — one blesses after it even though there is no kazayit there; therefore it is proper to take care not to eat a בריה of less than a kazayit. Gloss: and it is not called a בריה unless he ate it as it is; but if he removed its pit from it, it is no longer called a בריה [Rabbenu Yona, chapter Keitzad Mevarchin, and the Beit Yosef in the name of the Rashba]. And there are those who are further in doubt about the after-blessing over wine, whether one recites it over a kazayit; therefore it is good to take care to drink (only) less than a kazayit, or else a reviit.
The heart of the seif, in one sentence. It is word for word the language of the Rambam: אבל אכל פחות מכזית בין מן הפת בין משאר אוכלין. והשותה פחות מרביעית בין מן היין בין משאר משקין. מברך בתחלה ברכה הראויה לאותו המין ולבסוף אינו מברך כלל (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ג הלכה יב). summary: two regimes in a single sentence — no threshold before, a threshold after.
Before eating there is no measure at all: ואפי׳ על כל שהוא בין מדבר אוכל בין ממשקה דאסור ליהנות מן העוה״ז בלא ברכה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:ג). The Tur indeed opens the siman with it: ברכה ראשונה אין לה שיעור שעל כל הדברים מברכים לפניהם בכל שהו שאסור ליהנות מן העולם הזה בלא ברכה (טור או״ח סימן ר״י), and at once sets the other side against it: אבל ברכה אחרונה צריכה שיעור ושיעורה בז׳ המינין כזית (טור או״ח סימן ר״י). summary: the blessing before is an entry permit and measures nothing; the one after is an accounting, and an accounting presupposes that something happened.
Why precisely a kazayit and a reviit: דבפת הלא כתיב ואכלת ושבעת וברכת וגו׳ ואין אכילה בכל התורה פחותה מכזית ובשאר דברים כשתקנו חז״ל ברכה אחרונה כעין זה תקנו (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:ד), and for beverages: ובמשקין נמי מדאשכחן בעלמא לענין שתיית משקין אסורין דחיובו ברביעית הכא נמי כשתקנו ברכה אחרונה במשקה בשיעור זה תקנו (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:ד). summary: bread supplies the measure from the verse; everything else was instituted by the Sages on that model.
And the whole must have been consumed within one span: אכל הכזית מעט ונשתהה הרבה באכילתו אם יש מתחלת האכילה עד סוף האכילה יותר מכדי אכילת פרס אינו מצטרף (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:א). summary: it is not the single bite that counts but what was eaten within the time of a meal; spread over an afternoon, it is no longer one act of eating.
B. בריה — the thing eaten whole
בְּרִיָּה — a "creature", in the sense of a thing entire and complete, just as it came from creation: a grape berry, a pomegranate seed, a single lentil. The idea is that a whole thing has an importance of its own, independent of its size — and that this importance might stand in place of a measure. The siman does not decide: it records the hesitation and teaches how not to fall into it.
The reason for that importance, according to the Mishna Berura: מפני חשיבותיה ואם נתרסקה קודם אכילה לא מקרי בריה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:ו). summary: we do not know whether wholeness replaces measure; so one arranges never to have to know — one eats several of them, up to a certain kazayit.
The Rama's gloss defines the word: ולא מיקרי בריה אלא אם אכלו כמות שהוא (רמ״א או״ח ר״י:א), אבל אם לקח הגרעין ממנו לא מקרי ברי׳ (רמ״א או״ח ר״י:א). The Mishna Berura spells out both ends: דהיינו עם הגרעין ואפילו אם הגרעין אינו ראוי לאכול כלל כיון שעכ״פ בלע כולו (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:ז), and ולא מבעיא אם הגרעינין ראוי ג״כ לאכלן בודאי ע״י חסרונן נתבטל שם בריה מהפרי ואפילו אם היו מהמינין שאין ראוי לאכול אותן כלל ג״כ נתבטל הפרי מתורת בריה עי״ז (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:ט). summary: what makes a בריה is its integrity; to remove the pip is already to have broken into it — and the doubt falls away of itself. She adds that the same holds for a piece taken off the fruit: וכ״ש אם נחתך מעט מהפרי גופא (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:ח).
What these בריות are — the Mishna Berura broadens the siman's example: וה״ה יגד״ע אחת או קטנית אחת (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:ה). summary: the question does not concern grapes and pomegranates alone, but any small thing eaten whole — a single berry, a single pulse.
Where the doubt comes from. The Tur lays it out: ובירושלמי משמע שעל דבר שהוא כברייתו כגון גרגיר של ענב או של רמון שמברכין אחריו אע״פ שאין בו כזית (טור או״ח סימן ר״י), והתוספות מסתפקין בזה לכך טוב ליזהר שלא לאכול בריה פחותה מכזית כדי להסתלק מן הספק (טור או״ח סימן ר״י). And the Beit Yosef concludes likewise: ומ״מ כיון דכל הנך רבוותא מסתפקים בדבר יש ליזהר שלא לאכול בריה לבדה אם אין בה כזית (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״י). summary: one Talmud seems to say one thing and ours another; the Rishonim did not settle it, and the halakha contents itself with counsel of caution.
The second doubt — wine: ויש מסתפקין עוד בברכה אחרונה של יין אם מברכין אותו על כזית (שו״ע או״ח ר״י:א), whence לכן טוב ליזהר שלא לשתות (אלא) פחות מכזית או רביעית (שו״ע או״ח ר״י:א). The Mishna Berura gives the proportion: דהוא שליש רביעית דאפשר דלענין משקה ג״כ משערינן כמו באכילה בכזית (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:יא), and the conduct after the fact: ובדיעבד אם שתה כזית ואין לו רביעית טוב ליזהר שלא ישתה עד רוב רביעית (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:יב). summary: to drink an intermediate quantity is to place oneself in uncertainty; the siman therefore advises staying clearly below it, or going clearly above.
C. הטועם את התבשיל — tasting is not eating
Seif 2: one who tastes the dish need not bless, up to a reviit, and even if he swallows it. And there are those who say that if he swallows it, it requires a blessing, and that they exempted the taster only when he spits it back out — and then, even over a large quantity, he need not bless. Gloss: and in a doubt concerning blessings, one is lenient.
The criterion changes: no longer quantity, but intention. דאע״ג דאסור ליהנות מן העוה״ז בלא ברכה אפילו כל שהוא בין באכילה בין בשתיה היינו כשמכוין לאכול ולשתות אבל הכא שאין כונתו אלא לטעום לידע אם צריך מלח או תבלין א״צ ברכה לא לפניה ולא לאחריה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:יג). summary: the principle of seif 1 — everything is blessed, even a crumb — assumed someone who is eating; one who tastes in order to correct his dish is not eating, and the rule does not reach him.
The limit of the exemption: ועד בכלל אבל יתר מרביעית כיון שהוא הנאה יתירה חשיב כמו שמתכוין לאכילה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:יד). And for a solid food that one tastes, the measure is smaller: ולענין טעימה איזה דבר אוכל לידע אם הוא טוב מצדדים האחרונים דשיעורו הוא רק עד כזית (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:יד). summary: beyond a certain quantity the claim to be "tasting" no longer holds, and the act becomes an act of eating again.
The second opinion, and what divides them: וי״א שאם הוא בולעו טעון ברכה ולא פטרו את הטועם אלא כשחוזר ופולט (שו״ע או״ח ר״י:ב), and for it, from the smallest quantity — אפילו בכל שהוא כיון שיש לו הנאת מעיו (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:טז). When one spits out, however, all agree: ואם הוא פולט מותר אפילו ביותר מרביעית בלי ברכה גם לדעה זו (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:טו), דבזה התירו כשכונתו רק לטעימה בעלמא כיון שאין לו רק הנאת החיך מהתבשיל שטעם או מהאוכל שלעס (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:יז). summary: the first opinion measures the intention, the second measures the stomach. For the latter, whatever goes down gives benefit, and whatever gives benefit is blessed.
An everyday case: וע״כ הלועס לתינוק כיון שאינו בולע אפילו להרבה א״צ ברכה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:יח). summary: one who chews food for a small child and does not swallow it does not bless — whatever the quantity.
The gloss decides by way of doubt: וספק ברכות להקל (רמ״א או״ח ר״י:ב), and the Mishna Berura draws the consequence: היינו באפילו אם הוא בולע לא יברך כיון שאין כונתו לאכילה וכסברא הראשונה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:יט), noting that the Magen Avraham disagrees — והנה המ״א חולק על השו״ע והרמ״א וס״ל דבבולע לכו״ע חייב לברך אבל כמה אחרונים החליטו עם פסק הרמ״א דהוא ספק ברכה ולא יברך (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:יט). summary: one does not bless — and if one really wishes to bless, the Mishna Berura points to the way out: decide to benefit from it as from real food, and then bless over it.
The talmudic source: מטעמת אינה טעונה ברכה, והשרוי בתענית טועם ואין בכך כלום (ברכות י״ד ע״א), and the measure is already given there: רבי אמי ורבי אסי טעמי עד שיעור רביעתא (ברכות י״ד ע״א). The Rambam takes it over as it stands: ומטעמת אינה צריכה ברכה לא לפניה ולא לאחריה עד רביעית (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק א הלכה ב). summary: the Gemara was speaking of a man fasting who tastes the dish he is preparing; the siman applies the very same measure to the blessing.
The siman in one sentence: before eating, the smallest mouthful is blessed, because the blessing before is a permission; afterwards one needs a כזית or a רביעית, because the blessing after is an accounting; between the two lie two doubts the siman does not resolve but teaches one to avoid — the בריה and wine; and the one who tastes falls outside all these reckonings, because he is not eating.
Practical cases
Case 1 — I nibbled a small biscuit, less than a kazayit
Situation: I take a tiny biscuit, an almond, a sip of juice. I did say the blessing beforehand. Must I say anything afterwards?
The blessing beforehand, on the other hand, was indeed owed: ואפי׳ על כל שהוא בין מדבר אוכל בין ממשקה דאסור ליהנות מן העוה״ז בלא ברכה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:ג). And if one nibbled several small things one after another, they may add up: כל האוכלין מצטרפין לכזית לברך עליהן ברכה אחרונה הראויה להן (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:א). For practice, one follows one's Rav.
Case 2 — A single grape berry
Situation: I pull one berry off the bunch and eat it whole, pips and all. Or else I split it and take the pips out. Is there a difference?
Practice: the siman records a doubt here, not a ruling — ויש מסתפקים לומ׳ שעל דבר שהוא כברייתו כגון גרגיר של ענב או של רימון שמברכין לאחריו אע״פ שאין בו כזית (שו״ע או״ח ר״י:א) — and it teaches avoidance: לכך נכון ליזהר שלא לאכול בריה פחות מכזית (שו״ע או״ח ר״י:א). The very difference asked about is that of the gloss: ולא מיקרי בריה אלא אם אכלו כמות שהוא (רמ״א או״ח ר״י:א), אבל אם לקח הגרעין ממנו לא מקרי ברי׳ (רמ״א או״ח ר״י:א). summary: the berry eaten whole is a בריה and raises the doubt; the de-pipped berry is no longer one. In practice one eats enough of them to reach a certain kazayit. For practice, one follows one's Rav.
Case 3 — I taste the soup while cooking
Situation: I take a spoonful of soup to know whether it needs salt, and I swallow it. Must I bless? And if I do so three times over?
But the limit is real: ועד בכלל אבל יתר מרביעית כיון שהוא הנאה יתירה חשיב כמו שמתכוין לאכילה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:יד), and one should note that the Mishna Berura adds that one may not deliberately bless either — ודע דאף שבשו״ע כתב אין צריך לברך ממילא אסור לברך דהו״ל ברכה לבטלה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״י:יד). For practice, one follows one's Rav.
Questions for review
Check your understanding:
- Why does the blessing beforehand have no measure while the one afterwards does? What exactly does each of the two say?
- Where does the figure of the כזית come from, and why is the measure for beverages not derived from it directly (מ״ב ר״י:ד)?
- What is a בריה, and why does removing the pit suffice to make the question fall away (רמ״א או״ח ר״י:א)?
- The siman resolves neither the doubt of the בריה nor that of wine: what does it do instead, and what does that teach about its way with a doubt?
- In seif 2, what has changed relative to seif 1 — the quantity, or something else? And on what exactly do the two opinions differ?
