We know how to open a meal: every food has its blessing. But what does one say when one has finished? Over bread, the whole birkat ha-mazon; over an apple, a simple בורא נפשות. And in between? This siman is the siman of the third formula — the מעין שלש blessing, the one said after a cake, a glass of wine, a date or a fig. Hebrew text, an English translation and an explanation of the י״ח seifim, together with a section of practical cases.
Subject: The final blessing of the five fruits and the five grains —

A final blessing is not a generic thank-you: it names what one ate and ties it back to the Land that gave it. That is why this whole siman works on a single frontier — the frontier of dignity. The five fruits by which Scripture praises the Land, and the five grains by which man lives, are important enough to receive an abridgement of birkat ha-mazon. Everything else — millet, legumes, and even rice for all that it nourishes — makes do with a בורא נפשות. And within the five grains themselves, dignity depends on a state: the grain must have become a dish. Here we study the principle; for personal practice one follows the ruling of one’s Rav.
📑 Plan of the study
A. חמשת המינים וחמשת מיני דגן (seifim 1-3) — who calls for this blessing, and grain that became a dish
B. הדגן, הקמח והשתיתא (seifim 4-6) — grain left whole, flour, porridge thick or thin
C. אורז, דוחן וקטניות (seifim 7-9) — the near-grains, and the measure that decides a mixture
D. נוסח הברכה וחתימתה (seifim 10-12) — here and in the Land of Israel, wine, and a festival day
E. מה נפטר בה (seifim 13-18) — apples, grapes, water, birkat ha-mazon and doubt
1-3. Practical cases and comprehension questions
A. חמשת המינים וחמשת מיני דגן — who calls for this blessing
בְּרָכָה מֵעֵין שָׁלֹשׁ — “a blessing in the likeness of three.” After bread one recites four blessings; after an ordinary food, one very short blessing. Between the two, the Sages instituted for the foods by which the Land of Israel is praised an intermediate formula: an abridgement that gathers into a single paragraph the first, second and third blessings of birkat ha-mazon. This whole siman asks one thing: which foods deserve that abridgement, and how is it said?
Seif 1 —
Seif 1: Over the five species — which are the vine, the fig, the pomegranate, the olive and the date — one recites after them a single blessing “in the likeness of three.”
Five fruits, and a blessing of their own: The Mishnah establishes it: אכל ענבים ותאנים ורמונים מברך אחריהם שלש ברכות דברי רבן גמליאל וחכמים אומרים ברכה אחת מעין שלש (ברכות מ״ד ע״א). summary: Rabban Gamliel wanted the full birkat ha-mazon; the Sages instituted an abridgement — and their view is the law.
Why these five: The Mishnah Berurah goes back to the verse: The Tur says the same and explains the word “honey”:
The general rule of the Gemara: And the Rambam repeats it: חוץ מחמשת המינין הכתובין בתורה והם ענבים ורמונים ותאנים וזיתים ותמרים שהוא מברך עליהן בסוף ברכה אחת מעין שלש (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ח הלכה א). summary: the wheat and barley of the seven species are treated apart, in the following seifim, because they pass through bread.
Seif 2: The five species of grain that one split or pounded and from which one made a dish — such as a pot-dish: groats, fresh grits and porridge — even if one mixed into them honey far more abundant than they, or other species far more abundant than they: one blesses over it “borei minei mezonot,” and afterwards “al ha-mihya.” But if one put the grain into the dish only to bind and thicken it, it is nullified in the dish.
Grain that has become a dish: The Gemara gives the principle:
Even buried under honey: The Mishnah Berurah explains why the minority prevails: הטעם כיון דהוא בא להטעים ולהכשיר את התבשיל והוא מחמשת המינין דחשיבי הוא העיקר (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:ז). summary: it is not quantity that decides but function — what gives the dish its taste is its principal.
Unless it is there only to bind: אבל אם לא נתן הדגן בתבשיל אלא לדבקו ולהקפותו בטל בתבשיל (שו״ע או״ח ר״ח:ב), and the Mishnah Berurah adds: שלא בא להטעים התבשיל ולא לסעוד הלב רק שיהא התבשיל מדובק לא חשיב ובטיל לגבי התבשיל אפילו נתן לתוכו קמח הרבה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:ח). The Rambam had made it a general rule:
Seif 3: When flour is put into almonds prepared for a sick person: if it is done so that it should sustain the heart, one blesses “borei minei mezonot”; and if it is merely to bind, one does not bless “borei minei mezonot.” And it is good to be stringent and to swallow it during the meal, after the blessing of “ha-motzi” — and one is thereby exempt from it.
The cook's intention decides: The case comes verbatim from the Beit Yosef:
And the way out: The Mishnah Berurah says why: משום דבמעשה השקדים הדרך לעשותו נמי לסעוד ולכן קשה לשער אם היה כונתו רק לדבק וע״כ טוב להחמיר (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:יא). summary: when the two intentions cannot be told apart, the food is placed inside the meal, where birkat ha-mazon covers everything.
B. הדגן, הקמח והשתיתא — grain that has not become a dish
Seif 4: One who ate grain raw, or made into parched kernels, or boiled with the kernels whole, blesses only “borei pri ha-adama,” and after it “borei nefashot.” Gloss: and that one blesses before it “borei pri ha-adama” is where one eats wheat and the like, which are fit to be eaten so; but one who eats whole barley, even parched in fire — it is fit to be eaten only with difficulty, and one blesses before it only “shehakol” (Kol Bo; and so it appears from the words of the Rashba: that he equated wheat with barley regarding the final blessing, it seems, and not regarding the first). And Tosafot were in doubt whether one should bless after it the blessing “in the likeness of three,” and therefore they wrote that it is proper not to eat it except within the meal, and birkat ha-mazon will exempt it.
Grain that kept its shape: The baraita had said it: הכוסס את החטה מברך עליה בורא פרי האדמה (ברכות ל״ז ע״א), and the Rambam likewise: אכל דגן שלוק כמו שהוא מברך לפניו בורא פרי האדמה ולאחריו בורא נפשות רבות (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ג הלכה ב).
Barley, according to the gloss: אבל האוכל שעורי׳ שלמים אפי׳ קלויין באש אינן ראוין לאכול רק ע״י הדחק ואין מברך לפניהם רק שהכל (רמ״א או״ח ר״ח:ד). summary: this is not a quarrel about barley but about the definition of food — food is what one eats without forcing oneself.
The doubt of Tosafot, and the refuge of the meal: The Beit Yosef reports their conclusion: And the Mishnah Berurah adds, for one who did not follow that counsel:
Seif 5: Flour, even of wheat: one blesses over it “shehakol” and after it “borei nefashot” — whether it was ground very fine, or ground only in part so that the taste of wheat remains in it, or whether it is flour of parched kernels.
Flour has left the category of fruit: The Mishnah Berurah explains the descent:
And so in all three cases of the seif: The Rambam wrote it in one line: אכל קמח מברך לפניו שהכל ולאחריו בורא נפשות רבות (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ג הלכה ב). summary: flour is a state of passage — no longer the kernel, not yet the bread — and the blessing treats it as what it is.
Seif 6 —
Seif 6: Flour of one of the five species of grain that was boiled [explanation: cooked much] and mixed with water or with other liquids: if it was thick enough to be fit for eating and chewing [explanation: to grind it in the mouth], one blesses “borei minei mezonot” and after it “al ha-mihya”; and if it was thin enough to be fit for drinking, one blesses over it “shehakol” and after it “borei nefashot.”
Thick or thin: two foods: This is the Gemara's distinction:
The Rambam states the seif exactly: And the Mishnah Berurah widens the threshold: לאו דוקא דאפילו אם אינו עב כ״כ כיון שאינו רך שיהיה ראוי רק לשתיה מברך עליו במ״מ (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:כב). summary: the dividing line is not thickness in itself but use — is it eaten or drunk?
Seif 7: One who chews [explanation: who eats] rice blesses over it “borei pri ha-adama” and after it “borei nefashot.” And if he cooked it — gloss: until it became mashed (Beit Yosef in the name of the Rosh and the Ri) — or ground it and made bread from it, he blesses over it “borei minei mezonot” and after it “borei nefashot.” And this, provided it is not mixed with anything else but rice alone; and if he mixed some of it into another dish and the other dish is the majority, he blesses over it the blessing of that dish.
Rice: half a grain: הכוסס… The baraita is the source: הכוסס את האורז מברך עליו בורא פרי האדמה טחנו אפאו ובשלו אף על פי שהפרוסות קיימות בתחלה מברך עליו בורא מיני מזונות ולבסוף מברך עליו ברכה אחת מעין שלש (ברכות ל״ז ע״א) — and the halakhah does not follow its conclusion.
Two blessings, two measures of nourishment: The Rambam frames it as the seif does: ארז שבשלו או שעשה ממנו פת בתחלה מברך עליו בורא מיני מזונות ולבסוף בורא נפשות ובלבד שלא יהא מערב עם דבר אחר אלא ארז לבדו (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ג הלכה י), and the Mishnah Berurah gives both reasons: דפת שלו או תבשילו משביע וסועד הלב כמו מה׳ מיני דגן ועדיף משאר מיני קטניות (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:כח) on the one hand, and דבהמ״ז או ברכה מעין שלש אינם אלא בחמשה מינין מפני חשיבותן (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:כט) on the other. summary: rice nourishes enough to open like a grain, not enough to close like one.
Cooked, and mixed: The gloss fixes the threshold of cooking: עד שנתמעך (רמ״א או״ח ר״ח:ז), which the Mishnah Berurah refines: היינו אפילו נתמעך קצת ע״י הבישול אבל כשהם עדיין שלמים מברך בפה״א (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:כו). And for a mixture: ואם עירב ממנו בתבשיל אחר והתבשיל האחר הוא הרוב מברך עליו כברכת אותו תבשיל (שו״ע או״ח ר״ח:ז) — unlike the five grains, since אורז אינו חשוב כ״כ (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:ל).
Seif 8 —
Seif 8: Over bread of millet and panic, or of other species of legumes, one blesses “shehakol” and after it “borei nefashot.” Gloss: one who makes a dish of other species of legumes — if they remained whole and are as good cooked as raw, he blesses “borei pri ha-adama”; and if they became entirely mashed, or they are not as good cooked as raw, he blesses “shehakol” (and thus did the Beit Yosef explain the words of the Tur).
The Rambam is identical: The Mishnah Berurah explains the fall to shehakol:
The gloss returns to the cooked dish: העושה תבשיל משאר מיני קטניות אם נשארו שלימים וטובים מבושלים כמו חיין מברך בורא פרי האדמה (רמ״א או״ח ר״ח:ח), and ואם נתמעכו לגמרי או שאינן טובים מבושלים כחיין מברך שהכל (רמ״א או״ח ר״ח:ח). The Mishnah Berurah softens the word “whole”: לאו דוקא שלמים אלא כל שלא נתמעכו לגמרי שעדיין ניכר קצת תוארן וצורתן ברכתן בפה״א (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:לז). summary: with grain, cooking elevates; with legumes, it can strip away the name of fruit.
Seif 9: If he mixed flour of millet and other species of legumes with flour of the five species of grain and cooked it in a pot, he blesses “borei minei mezonot” and “al ha-mihya”; and if he made bread from it, he blesses “ha-motzi” and birkat ha-mazon. And this precisely when there is in that flour, of the five species, enough that he eat from it a kazayit of grain within the time of “akhilat pras.” But if there is not in it this measure of the five species, he does not bless birkat ha-mazon at the end; rather, at the outset he blesses “ha-motzi,” since there is in it the taste of grain, even though there is not in it a kazayit within the time of “akhilat pras” — and at the end, “al ha-mihya.” And if he cooked it in a pot, he blesses first “borei minei mezonot,” and after it “borei nefashot.”
The mixture, and the measure that decides: עירב קמח דוחן ושאר מיני קטניו׳ עם קמח של חמשת מיני דגן ובשלו בקדירה מברך בורא מיני מזונות ועל המחיה (שו״ע או״ח ר״ח:ט); and for bread, ודוקא שיש באותו קמח מחמשת המינים כדי שיאכל ממנו כזית דגן בכדי אכילת פרס (שו״ע או״ח ר״ח:ט). The Mishnah Berurah gives the measure:
Beginning and end are not measured alike: The Mishnah Berurah gives the reason: כדקי״ל לקמן בסימן ר״י דברכה ראשונה א״צ שיעור דאפילו על משהו יש לברך ברכה הראויה לאותו המין (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:מד). summary: the blessing before follows taste, the blessing after follows quantity.
A famous difficulty: Many Acharonim struggled with this seif; the Mishnah Berurah reports it: ומחמת זה באמת הגיה הגר״א דצ״ל גם כאן ולבסוף בנ״ר (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:מז), and his practical conclusion: ומ״מ הנוהג כדברי השו״ע אין למחות בידו דכן סתמו הרבה אחרונים לדינא (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:מז).
D. נוסח הברכה וחתימתה — the text and the seal
Seif 10: In the single blessing “in the likeness of three” over fruits of the diaspora, one seals “al ha-aretz ve-al ha-perot”; and in the Land of Israel one seals “al ha-aretz ve-al peroteha.” And if, in the diaspora, one eats fruits of the Land, one seals likewise “al peroteha.”
The Gemara raises the question and corrects itself: רב חסדא אמר על הארץ ועל פירותיה ורבי יוחנן אמר על הארץ ועל הפירות אמר רב עמרם ולא פליגי הא לן והא להו (ברכות מ״ד ע״א), then מתקיף לה רב נחמן בר יצחק אינהו אכלי ואנן מברכין אלא איפוך (ברכות מ״ד ע״א). summary: it is those who eat the fruits of the Land who say “her fruits” — not those who look at them from afar.
And the fruit that travels: The Mishnah Berurah settles the doubt: ר״ל כשיודע שהם מפירות הארץ אבל בספק כגון בחו״ל הסמוכה לא״י יאמר על הפירות (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:נד), and explains the diaspora formula: שאין יכול לומר פירותיה כיון שאינם מפירות של א״י (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:נב).
Seif 11 —
Seif 11: In the blessing “in the likeness of three” over wine, one does not seal “al ha-gefen ve-al pri ha-gefen,” but rather “al ha-aretz ve-al pri ha-gefen,” or “al ha-aretz ve-al ha-perot.”
The Land must appear in the seal: The Mishnah Berurah gives the reason:
Two usages, and a custom: The Mechaber leaves the choice, and the Mishnah Berurah indicates where practice goes: ועיין באחרונים דמשמע מהם דהמנהג לחתום על הארץ ועל פרי הגפן (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:נו), adding that ומ״מ בדיעבד אם סיים על הארץ ועל הפירות בודאי יצא (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:נו). The Tur had already ruled:
Seif 12: One mentions in it that which is in the likeness of the occasion, on Shabbat, on Festivals and on Rosh Hodesh — but not on Hanukkah and Purim. If he ate fruits of the seven species, ate foods of grain, and drank wine, he includes everything in one blessing; he puts “ha-mihya” first, then “ha-gefen,” then “ha-etz,” and says “al ha-mihya ve-al ha-kalkala ve-al ha-gefen ve-al pri ha-gefen ve-al ha-etz ve-al pri ha-etz,” and seals “al ha-aretz ve-al ha-mihya ve-al pri ha-gefen ve-al ha-perot.”
The day enters the blessing: The Mishnah Berurah says where and how: היינו קודם שאומר כי אתה ה׳ טוב ומטיב יאמר בשבת ורצה והחליצנו ביום השבת הזה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:נח), and reassures: ובדיעבד אפילו לא הזכיר מעין המאורע יצא (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:נח). For Hanukkah and Purim the reason is the Gaon's:
The Rambam gives the same text: The Mishnah Berurah explains the order:
E. מה נפטר בה ומה אינו נפטר — the reach of the blessing
Seif 13: If he ate fruits of the seven species and ate apples, he need not bless over the apples “borei nefashot,” for they too are included in the blessing “al ha-etz,” since they too are fruit of the tree. But if he ate apples and drank wine, he must bless “borei nefashot” over the apples; and all the more so if he ate meat or a fruit of the ground and is drinking wine, or ate of the seven species: he must bless over each and every one. And the same holds if he ate meat and fish and ate of the five species: the blessing “al ha-mihya” does not exempt the meat or the fish.
The apple travels in the fig's wake: The Rambam writes it: אכל תאנים או ענבים ותפוחים ואגסים וכיוצא בהן מברך בסוף ברכה אחת מעין שלש והיא כוללת הכל מפני שכלן פרות העץ (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ח הלכה טז); and the Beit Yosef finds the right word: ולא מפני שמעין ג׳ עדיף מבורא נפשות ויפטור אותה אלא מפני שמזכיר בפירוש על העץ ועל פרי העץ והלכך כולל כל מה שאכל מפירות העץ (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״ח).
But wine does not sweep it along: אבל אם אכל תפוחים ושתה יין צריך לברך בורא נפשות על התפוחים (שו״ע או״ח ר״ח:יג), and the Mishnah Berurah gives the practical counsel: וע״כ יש ליזהר היכא שאוכל תפוחים ושותה יין שיברך תחלה בנ״ר על התפוחים או שיסיים בברכת היין על הארץ ועל פה״ג (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:סד).
The Beit Yosef gives the reason: משום דמיני לפתן אע״ג דמיזן זייני לא סעדי אבל מיני דגן מיסעד סעדי (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״ח). summary: a blessing covers only what it names.
Seif 14 —
Seif 14: If he drank wine and blessed “borei pri ha-gefen,” and then ate grapes, he must bless over them “borei pri ha-etz”; and likewise in the final blessing he must mention “al ha-etz ve-al pri ha-etz.”
Wine does not contain the grape: שתה יין ובירך בפה״ג ואכל ענבים צריך לברך עליהם בורא פרי העץ (שו״ע או״ח ר״ח:יד), and likewise afterwards: וכן בברכה אחרונ׳ צריך להזכיר על העץ ועל פרי העץ (שו״ע או״ח ר״ח:יד). The Mishnah Berurah stresses the novelty:
The reason, in the Beit Yosef: אבל ענבים דברכה ראשונה שלהם אינו בורא פרי הגפן אלא בפה״ע לא אמרינן דברכת על הגפן תפטרה (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״ח). summary: the wine blessing names the vine, not the tree; and grapes that are eaten are tree fruit like any other — one is not discharged by a name that is not one's own.
Seif 15: If, after the fact, he blessed over the grapes “borei pri ha-gefen,” or after them “al ha-gefen,” he has fulfilled his obligation.
After the fact, one has discharged: The Beit Yosef gives the comparison:
Intention can make up for it: The Mishnah Berurah adds a case: וה״ה אם שתה יין ונתכוין לפטור הענבים דיצא (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:סט), and recalls the opposite limit: ואם בירך על היין בורא פה״ע יש דעות בין הפוסקים יש אומרים דיצא בדיעבד וי״א דלא יצא וספק ברכות להקל (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:ע).
Seif 16 —
Seif 16: If he drank wine and water, he need not bless over the water “borei nefashot,” for the blessing of the wine exempts it — just as, in the first blessing, wine exempts all kinds of drinks.
Wine carries the water: The Tur reports it in the name of the Rosh:
But not in every case: The Mishnah Berurah sets the conditions: מיירי כשקבע על היין ואז פוטר אפילו לא היו המשקין לפניו בשעת ברכה או דמיירי שהיו המשקין לפניו בשעת ברכה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:עב), and extends the word “water”: וה״ה כל מיני משקין אף החשובים ביותר (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:עא).
Seif 17: The blessing of three [birkat ha-mazon] does not exempt the “likeness of three”: for if he ate porridge, birkat ha-mazon does not exempt it. But over wine, the blessing of three does exempt it: for if he recited over the wine birkat ha-mazon in place of “al ha-gefen,” he has fulfilled his obligation; and the same holds if he recited over dates birkat ha-mazon in place of “al ha-etz,” he has fulfilled it. And even if he said only the blessing “ha-zan,” whether over the wine or over the dates, he has fulfilled it. And if he remembered before he sealed the blessing “ha-zan,” let him begin “ve-al she-hinhalta la-avoteinu eretz hemda tova u-rehava” and conclude with the blessing “in the likeness of three.”
The long one does not contain the short one: The Beit Yosef reports the root of the principle:
Except wine and dates: The Mishnah Berurah gives both reasons: והטעם משום דיין זיין וסועד הלב כמו לחם (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:עו) and דתמרים נמי זיין כעין מיני דגן ושייך בהו בדיעבד בהמ״ז (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:עז).
Finally, for porridge, the Mishnah Berurah notes the contrary view:
Seif 18: He should not include, out of doubt, any addition whatsoever in the blessing “in the likeness of three,” even though he adds neither Name nor kingship. [Explanation: for example, if he drank a drink about which it is doubtful whether its blessing is “al ha-gefen” etc. or “borei nefashot rabbot” etc. — to eat a thing whose blessing is “borei nefashot rabbot” and a thing whose blessing is “al ha-etz,” and to include with it also “al ha-gefen ve-al pri ha-gefen” etc., out of doubt] (Terumat ha-Deshen, and so it appears in the Mordekhai, chapter Keitzad mevarkhin, and see above seif 16).
Doubt does not license an addition: The Mishnah Berurah explains why the manoeuvre is refused:
And the Taz on the other side: ודעת הט״ז והסכימו אתו כמה אחרונים לדינא דלא אמרינן סברא זו רק לענין לכתחלה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:פב) — that is, after the fact, if one has already drunk, it is better to include than to remain with no final blessing at all. The Mishnah Berurah also gives the clean way out:
The siman in one sentence: a final blessing names what one has eaten — and only the foods by which the Land is praised deserve to be named along with it. Hence the siman's three questions: who enters that dignity (the five fruits, and grain that has become a dish — not raw flour, not millet, not quite rice), how the formula is said (the seal of here and the seal of there, wine, a festival day, three foods gathered into one blessing), and how far it reaches (the apple yes, the meat no; the water yes, the grape no; and the addition that doubt does not license).
Practical cases
Case 1 — I ate cake and then drank wine
Situation: at the end of a kiddush I ate a piece of cake and drank wine. Must I say two final blessings?
The Mishnah Berurah explains why grain comes first: For practice, follow your Rav.
Case 2 — I ate an apple with the dates, and drank wine
Situation: I ate dates and an apple, and then drank a glass of wine. How many final blessings, and which?
Conduct: the apple is covered by the blessing of the dates — אינו צריך לברך על התפוחים בורא נפשות שגם הם בכלל ברכת על העץ (שו״ע או״ח ר״ח:יג) — but not by the blessing of the wine: אבל אם אכל תפוחים ושתה יין צריך לברך בורא נפשות על התפוחים (שו״ע או״ח ר״ח:יג). Hence the Mishnah Berurah's counsel: For practice, follow your Rav.
Case 3 — A dish in which the flour is almost invisible
Situation: a soup thickened with a spoonful of wheat flour; and elsewhere, a semolina dish drowned in honey. Which blessing, before and after?
Conduct: everything depends on the function of the flour. If it is there to bind, אבל אם לא נתן הדגן בתבשיל אלא לדבקו ולהקפותו בטל בתבשיל (שו״ע או״ח ר״ח:ב); if it gives the dish its taste, אפילו עירב עמהם דבש הרבה יות׳ מהם או מינים אחרי׳ הרבה יות׳ מהם מברך עליו בורא מיני מזונות ולבסוף על המחיה (שו״ע או״ח ר״ח:ב), and the reason is in the Mishnah Berurah: הטעם כיון דהוא בא להטעים ולהכשיר את התבשיל והוא מחמשת המינין דחשיבי הוא העיקר (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ח:ז). For practice, follow your Rav.

- What makes a grain “become a dish,” and why does the quantity of honey change nothing (seif 2)?
- Why does raw flour fall to שהכל, while whole grain stays at בורא פרי האדמה (seifim 4-5)?
- Why does rice open with בורא מיני מזונות and close with בורא נפשות (seif 7)?
- Why does the wine blessing not discharge the grapes one eats (seif 14), while it does discharge the water one drinks (seif 16)?
