The previous siman settled what one says over a piece of news. This one names the events themselves: a son who is born, a father who dies leaving an inheritance, a house one builds, an object one buys, a gift one receives. The question that assigns the wordings is unchanged — whom does this good benefit? — but two new measures appear: when the blessing is said, and from what threshold it is still said at all. Hebrew text, English translation and explanation of the ו׳ seifim, with a section of practical cases.

Three wordings already known, and one criterion to assign them: whom does this good benefit? But here the Mechaber no longer speaks of news, he speaks of things — a child, an inheritance, a house, a garment, a gift. Two measures of the siman’s own are added: the blessing is said בשעת הקנין, while the joy is still fresh, and it is no longer said על דבר שאינו חשוב כ״כ. We study here at the level of principle; for personal practice one follows one’s Rav.

📑 Plan of the study

A. ילדה אשתו זכר (seif 1) — the birth of a son, and why both parents bless
B. מת אביו (seif 2) — דיין האמת, then שהחיינו or הטוב והמטיב on the inheritance
C. בית חדש וכלים חדשים (seif 3) — even if he already had their like
D. בשעת הקנין (seif 4) — the moment of the blessing, and מלביש ערומים
E. כלים של בני הבית ומתנה (seif 5) — a good that reaches others
F. דבר שאינו חשוב (seif 6) — the threshold, and the measure of the man
1-3. Practical cases and comprehension questions

A. ילדה אשתו זכר — the birth of a son

הַטּוֹב וְהַמֵּטִיב — “He who is good and does good”. This wording is said only when the good reaches another as well. The siman therefore opens with the case in which that other is the closest there is: the mother. The Beit Yosef puts it in one line: « ומפרש בגמרא שם הטעם משום דאיכא אשתו בהדיה דניחא לה בזכר כלומר דאי לאו הכי לא הוה ליה לברוכי הטוב והמטיב דאינו מברך כן אלא כשאותה טובה מגעת גם לאחרים » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רכ״ג).

Seif 1: his wife has given birth to a boy — he blesses “HaTov VehaMetiv”; and she too must bless likewise. Gloss: and if his wife died in childbirth he blesses “Shehecheyanu”, since there is no benefit to another here; and likewise if the father died before she gave birth, she blesses “Shehecheyanu” (and thus it seems right to me to settle the Rashba, responsum 245). And some have written that the practice grew lenient about this blessing, which is not an obligation but an option; and from this it spread that many are lenient about such blessings.
The braita from which the seif comes. The Gemara asked whether הטוב והמטיב is ever said when no one else benefits, and answered from this very case: « והתניא: אמרו ליה ילדה אשתו זכר, אומר ״ברוך … » (ברכות נ״ט ע״ב). summary: the mother rejoices in the boy with him — the good is therefore not his alone, and the wording changes.
And she blesses too. The seif does not only say that the father blesses; it adds that the mother is bound as well: « ילדה אשתו זכר מברך הטוב והמטיב וגם היא צריכה לברך כן: » (שו״ע או״ח רכ״ג:א). The Beit Yosef gives the source: « וכתבו הגהות מיימון פ״ד בשם סמ״ק דגם היא צריכה לברך כיון דשניהם נהנים » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רכ״ג), and the Mishnah Berurah details both sides of the good: « הטוב לו דניחא ליה בזכר וגם טוב לה שגם לה ניחא בבן זכר ואפילו היה להם כבר כמה בנים » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:ג). summary: this is not the husband blessing over his wife; it is a blessing each of the two owes for himself.
Must one have seen it? No: « ואפילו לא ראה בעצמו רק שמע כשהיה בעיר אחרת » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:א), and the Magen Avraham had already written it: « ובאלו אין חילוק בין רואה לשומע » (מגן אברהם או״ח סימן רכ״ג). And if one did not bless at once: « ועיין בפמ״ג דאפילו אם לא בירך תיכף כששמע ג״כ יברך לכו״ע דעדיין הטובה נמשכת » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:ג). summary: news received far away counts as sight; and the good still lasts a while after the announcement.
And at the birth of a daughter? But the Mishnah Berurah does not leave the joy without a blessing: « ומ״מ נ״ל פשוט דבפעם ראשון כשרואה אותה מברך ברכת שהחיינו » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:ב). summary: the blessing of the birth is not said; the blessing of the joy of seeing is — as one says it on seeing a friend again after thirty days.
The painful case in the gloss. The Rama writes: « ואם מתה אשתו בלדתה מברך שהחיינו דהא ליכא הטבה לאחריני » (רמ״א או״ח רכ״ג:א), and the Mishnah Berurah fixes the order: « על לידת הבן אלא שמתחלה צריך להקדים לברך דיין האמת על מיתתה דברכת דיין האמת היא חובה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:ו). The Mechaber, however, does not seem to hold this: « יש אומרים דהמחבר פליג ע״ז וס״ל דאפילו מתה אשתו בלדתה מברך הטוב והמטיב וכזה ס״ל ג״כ הט״ז לדינא » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:ד) — for the Beit Yosef had written « ונראה דאפי׳ מתה אשתו מברך הטוב והמטיב דהא מ״מ טובה היתה לה בעת שילדתו » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רכ״ג). summary: two blessings meet there, and the mourner’s blessing, which is an obligation, must come before the one over the birth.
Obligation, or mere option? The end of the gloss records the lenient practice, and the Mishnah Berurah opposes it: « אבל אינו נכון דמאי דאיתמר בגמרא שהיא רשות איתמר » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:ז); the reason of those who are lenient is that « שעיקר ברכת שהחיינו נתקן על דבר הבא מזמן לזמן כמועדים וכדומה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:ז). The Beur Halacha rules otherwise: « אבל הרבה פוסקים ס״ל דהוא חובה » (ביאור הלכה סימן רכ״ג), and gives their reasoning: « וטעמם דדבר שתקנו חז״ל לברך משום שמחת הלב לא שייכא בזמן אלא כל אימת שנזדמן ע״י הקניה שמחה בלבו » (ביאור הלכה סימן רכ״ג). summary: the question is whether שהחיינו belongs only to what returns at set times; for many it does not — the heart’s joy is enough to call for it.

B. מת אביו — the mourning, then the inheritance

דַּיַּן הָאֱמֶת and שֶׁהֶחֱיָנוּ — one event and two blessings in succession. The Gemara already holds them together: « תא שמע: מת אביו והוא יורשו, בתחלה אומר: ״ברוך … » (ברכות נ״ט ע״ב), and the Rambam sets them in order: « אמרו לו מת אביו וירשהו.

Seif 2: his father has died — he blesses “Dayan haEmet”. If he had money that he inherits: if he has no brothers, he also blesses “Shehecheyanu”; and if he has brothers, in place of “Shehecheyanu” he blesses “HaTov VehaMetiv”. Gloss: for one blesses “HaTov VehaMetiv” only if one has a partner in that same good (Tur).
Two moments within one event. The Gemara saw in this a proof that הטוב והמטיב requires another beneficiary: « תא שמע: מת אביו והוא יורשו, בתחלה אומר: ״ברוך … » (ברכות נ״ט ע״ב) — the brothers who inherit with him. summary: the first blessing is over the loss, the second over what remains; they do not contradict, they follow one another.
And over someone other than his father. The Mishnah Berurah broadens it: « וה״ה שאר אדם כשר שאדם מצטער עליו דהוא בכלל שמועות רעות מיהו העולם נוהגין לברך בלא שם ומלכות ואינו נכון » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:ח); the Aruch HaShulchan likewise: « שעל כל המתים שמתאבל עליהם חייב בברכה זו, וכל שכן על אביו » (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רכ״ג). And the Taz writes of the whole siman: « כל הברכות הכתובים בזה הסי׳ פשוט שהם בשם ומלכות » (ט״ז או״ח סימן רכ״ג). summary: this is not a mourner’s exclamation but a full blessing — the practice of saying it without the Name is not endorsed by the poskim.
Saying שהחיינו on a day of mourning? The question is old, and the Mishnah Berurah answers it: « ואף דיותר היה מתרצה שלא ימות אביו ולא יירשנו מ״מ יכול לברך שהחיינו דאין ברכה זו תלויה בשמחה אלא בדבר שמגיע לו תועלת ממנו ואע״פ שמתערב עמה צער ואנחה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:ט). summary: שהחיינו does not measure cheerfulness but benefit received; the grief mixed with it does not prevent it.
Why brothers change the wording. The gloss gives the general rule: « הגה שאין מברכין הטוב והמטיב אא״כ יש לו שותפות באותה טובה (טור): » (רמ״א או״ח רכ״ג:ב) — it is the Tur’s language: « אין לו אחים והוא יורשו מברך שהחיינו שאין מברכין הטוב והמטיב אא״כ יש לו שותף באותה טובה » (טור או״ח סימן רכ״ג). The Beur Halacha draws a consequence: « היינו אפילו כבר חילק אביו נכסיו על פיו ויש לכל אח שדה בפ״ע אפ״ה הלא ע״י הירושה הוטב לכולם ושייך ברכת הטוב ומטיב » (ביאור הלכה סימן רכ״ג), and the Mishnah Berurah presses the word במקום: « ר״ל ששוב לא יברך שהחיינו כיון שיש בזה טובה גם לאחיו ויוכל לברך ברכת טוב ומטיב » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:י). summary: הטוב והמטיב replaces שהחיינו rather than being added to it; and the sharing need not be undivided to count.
And do his wife and children not benefit? The Aruch HaShulchan sets the objection aside: « ואין לומר הלא גם כשהוא לבדו יורש הרי מגיע טובה לאשתו ובניו, דאינו כן, דהם תלוים בו. ולא דמי לילדה אשתו זכר שגם היא יש לה חלק ממש בהולד, אבל ממון כולו שלו » (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רכ״ג). summary: those who depend on him are not “others” — they receive through him, not with him; the mother of seif 1, by contrast, has a share of her own in the child.

C. בית חדש וכלים חדשים — the new house and the new vessels

כֵּלִים חֲדָשִׁים — the mishnah teaches it in four words: « בנה בית חדש, וקנה כלים חדשים, אומר ברוך שהחינו » (משנה ברכות פרק ט משנה ג). The whole debate of the Amoraim was how far the word “new” reaches: new in itself, or new to him?

Seif 3: he built a new house or bought new vessels — even if he already had their like beforehand, or bought and bought again, he blesses “Shehecheyanu” each time. And not specifically new ones: the same holds for old ones, if they are new to him, that is, if they were never his. And “new” was said only to exclude the case where he sold them and bought them back.
The dispute of the Amoraim. On the mishnah the Gemara brings: « אמר רב הונא: לא שנו אלא שאין לו כיוצא בהן, אבל יש לו כיוצא בהן — אינו צריך לברך. The Beit Yosef records the ruling: « וכתבו הרי״ף והרא״ש וקי״ל כר׳ יוחנן וכלישנא בתרא » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רכ״ג). summary: the Mechaber follows Rabbi Yochanan in the broadest version — one blesses every time, without regard to what one already owned.
New, or new to him? The Tur has it from the Yerushalmi: « ואיתא בירושל׳ לאו דוקא חדשים אלא ה״ה נמי ישנים אם הם חדשים אצלו ונקט חדשים לאפוקי אם מכרן וחזר וקנאן » (טור או״ח סימן רכ״ג), and the Aruch HaShulchan repeats it: « דאפילו אינם חדשים, כיון שאצלו חדשים הם » (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רכ״ג). summary: “new” does not describe the object but the relation — what was never mine is new to me, however worn.
What the word “new” excludes. The Beit Yosef, in the name of the Rashba and the Raavad: « כן כתב שם הרשב״א בשם הראב״ד ומשמע ליה שאע״פ שהם חדשים שלא נשתמש בהם אינו מברך דכיון שהיו שלו פעם אחת שוב אינו דבר חידוש כשחזר וקנאם » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רכ״ג), and the Mishnah Berurah gives the reason in one line: « ואפילו אם הם חדשים שלא נשתמש בהם עדיין מ״מ כיון שכבר דש בהן לית בהן שמחה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:טז). summary: what one has already had is no longer a surprise; and without surprise there is not the joy the blessing expresses.
What counts as a “vessel”? The Mishnah Berurah broadens and measures at once: « בין מלבושים ובין כלי תשמיש ושתיה ואכילה וכיו״ב אם הם דברים שלב האדם שמח בהם עני בראוי לו ועשיר בראוי לו » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:יג); but « אכן אם הוא עשיר גדול שאפילו כלים יקרים וחשובים אין נחשבים לו ואין שמח בהן לא יברך » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:יג). On books the Magen Avraham refused — « ונ״ל דוק׳ כלי תשמיש אבל על ספרים חדשים אינו מברך דמצות לאו ליהנות ניתנו » (מגן אברהם או״ח סימן רכ״ג) — and the Mishnah Berurah concludes: « וע״כ אין למחות ביד המברך » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:יג). summary: the measure is not the price but the joy; and the very rich man whom nothing stirs does not bless.
A house rebuilt, a house in partnership. On the house: « ה״ה אם נשרף וחזר ובנאו אבל אם סתרו וחזר ובנאו יש דעות באחרונים בזה וספיקו להקל » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:יב). And on partners: « ודוקא כשבנה או קנה לעצמו אבל אם יש לו שותפות בגוה כ״א מהשותפים מברך הטוב והמטיב » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:יא), whence « וע״כ קהל שבנו או קנו בהכ״נ יעמוד ש״ץ ויברך בקול רם הטוב והמטיב להוציא את כולם » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:יא) — the Aruch HaShulchan, however, does not agree: « ועל בניין בית הכנסת אין לברך כיון שהוא של רבים » (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רכ״ג). summary: the new synagogue follows the logic of seif 5 — a good held by many calls for הטוב והמטיב — but practice on this point is not uniform.

D. בשעת הקנין — the moment of the blessing

שִׂמְחַת הַלֵּב — here the seif gives the reason behind the whole series. The blessing does not follow the use one will make of the object but the joy of having it: which is why it is said at the moment of acquisition, before one has even used it. The Tur had it from the Rosh: « כתב א״א הרא״ש ז״ל שבשעת קנין יש לו לברך אע״פ שעדיין לא נשתמש בהן שאין הברכה אלא ע״י שמחת הלב שהוא שמח בשעת קנייתן » (טור או״ח סימן רכ״ג).

Seif 4 —

Seif 4: at the moment of the acquisition he should bless, even though he has not yet used them; for the blessing comes only through the joy of the heart — he rejoices in having acquired them. And when he puts them on, he blesses “Malbish arumim”.
The reason, and what follows from it. The seif does not merely fix a moment, it says why: « שאין הברכה אלא ע״י שמחת הלב שהוא שמח בקנייתן » (שו״ע או״ח רכ״ג:ד). Hence the warning: « ויזהר לברך תיכף קודם שיתרגל ויסתלק השמחה ממנו » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:טו). summary: the blessing has a window — the time while the joy is still fresh; habit closes it.
When the object is not yet finished. The Magen Avraham restricts: « דוקא כשקנה כלי כמו שהיא אבל אם קנה כסף ונתן לאומן לעשות כלי אינו מברך אלא כשישתמש בו » (מגן אברהם או״ח סימן רכ״ג), and the Aruch HaShulchan likewise: « ודווקא כשהדבר נגמר כתקונו, אבל אם הבית עדיין לא נגמרה לגמרי והכלי צריכה תקון והבגד צריך תקון - לא יברך עד שיגמור כל התקונים » (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רכ״ג); the Mishnah Berurah follows: « ודוקא אם קנה בגד שראוי ללובשו תיכף אבל אם קנה שום דבר שאינו ראוי ללובשו או להשתמש בו כמו שהוא רק שצריך ליתן לאומן לתקן לא יברך שהחיינו עד שעה שילבש הבגד או ישתמש בהכלי » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:יז). summary: what cannot yet be used is not yet acquired as far as joy goes — one waits until it is.
The Taz disagrees. He writes: « נ״ל דהיינו משעה שקנה בגד אע״פ שצריך ליתן אותו לחייט לעשות ממנו מלבוש אע״ג דרחוק עדיין מן ההנאה » (ט״ז או״ח סימן רכ״ג). summary: for the Taz the Rosh’s comparison with rain settles the matter — one blesses over rain whose benefit is not yet visible; so too over cloth that will become a garment.
Two blessings, and their order. The seif adds מלביש ערומים for the moment one puts the garment on, and the Mishnah Berurah fixes the order: « היינו קודם שהחיינו. אכן אם לובש הבגד שחרית יכול לצאת בברכת מלביש ערומים שמברך בברכת השחר » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:יח). summary: they are not about the same thing — one about the acquisition, the other about being clothed — and one may discharge the second with the morning blessing. The Aruch HaShulchan, for his part, places שהחיינו first; follow your Rav’s ruling.

E. כלים של בני הבית ומתנה — the shared good and the gift

מַתָּנָה — the seif applies the rule of seif 1 to objects: as soon as another benefits from the same good, the wording becomes הטוב והמטיב. It even extends this to the giver, on the strength of the Yerushalmi cited by the Tur: « ירושל׳ קנה מברך שהחיינו ניתנו לו במתנה מברך הטוב והמטיב שיש בו טובה לו ולנותן לבש מברך מלביש ערומים » (טור או״ח סימן רכ״ג).

Seif 5: he bought vessels which he and the members of his household use — he blesses “HaTov VehaMetiv”. If they were given to him as a gift, he blesses “HaTov VehaMetiv”, for it is a good for him and for the giver.
Sharing inside the house. The Tur had it from the Semak: « כתב בסמ״ק שאם קנה לו ולביתו מברך גם הטוב והמטיב » (טור או״ח סימן רכ״ג). And if the objects are not shared but separate: « אבל אם קנה כלים לו וכלים לבני ביתו מברך על שלו שהחיינו ועל של ב״ב מברך הטוב והמטיב » (מגן אברהם או״ח סימן רכ״ג), taken up by the Mishnah Berurah: « אבל אם קנה כלים לו וכלים לב״ב מברך על שלו שהחיינו ועל של ב״ב מברך הטוב והמטיב » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:יט). With one limit: « ודוקא אם קנה בשביל אשתו וזרעו אבל אם קנה בשביל עבדו ושפחתו לא מקרי טוב לדידיה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:יט). summary: what is bought for wife and children is a benefit; what is owed to an employee as wages is not.
The reason for the gift, in the Rosh. The Beit Yosef reports it: « והרא״ש כתב ול״נ דה״נ איכא אחריני בהדיה המטיב לנותן אם המקבל עני שזיכהו השם וחננו ממון לעשות צדקה ואם הוא עשיר שמח הנותן במה שמקבל מתנתו » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רכ״ג), and the Magen Avraham writes the same: « שאם המקבל עני הוא טובה לנותן שזיכהו הש״י ממון לעשות צדקה ואם המקבל עשיר שמח הנותן שמקבל ממנו והוי טובה גם לנותן » (מגן אברהם או״ח סימן רכ״ג). summary: the giver receives too — the means to give, or the honour of having his gift accepted; that is what makes him “another” in the sense of seif 1.
The objection of Tosafot. The Beit Yosef records it: « וכתבו התוספות (שם) וצ״ע בתלמוד שלנו דלא אשכחן הטוב והמטיב אלא בדאיכא אחריני בהדיה » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רכ״ג). summary: our Talmud only ever said הטוב והמטיב where another benefits materially from the same good; the giver’s satisfaction is not of that order.
The practical ruling, against the letter of the Shulchan Aruch. Two precisions: « המקבל מתנה אבל הנותן לכו״ע לא יברך » (ביאור הלכה סימן רכ״ג); and « היינו דוקא כלים או בגדים שהמקבל משמח בזה אבל לא מעות שעי״ז מתבייש יותר ולא יוכל ע״ז לברך » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:כ). summary: this is one of the places where the Mishnah Berurah does not follow the Mechaber; Sephardim will follow their Rav, who usually holds the letter of the Shulchan Aruch.
And if he already had such vessels? The Beur Halacha: « פשוט דגם בזה דינא הוא דאפילו יש לו מכבר כלים כיו״ב אפ״ה מברך הטוב והמטיב וכמו לעיל בס״ג » (ביאור הלכה סימן רכ״ג). summary: the breadth of seif 3 applies here too — it is not the rarity of the object that makes the blessing.

F. דבר שאינו חשוב — the threshold, and the measure of the man

הַכֹּל לְפִי מַה שֶּׁהוּא אָדָם — Tosafot had set an objective threshold; the Rosh answered that the threshold is the man’s own. The Tur sets the two face to face: « כתבו התוספות שאין לברך אלא על דברים חשובים דומיא דבנה בית חדש אבל דבר שאינו חשוב כ״כ כגון חלוק או מנעלים ואנפילאות אין לברך עליו » (טור או״ח סימן רכ״ג); « וא״א הרא״ש ז״ל כתב יראה לי שהכל הוא לפי מה שהוא אדם יש עני ששמח בחלוקו יותר מעשיר בכלים חשובים » (טור או״ח סימן רכ״ג).

Seif 6 —

Seif 6: over a thing that is not so important — such as a shirt, shoes or slippers (that is, small shoes covering most of the foot) — one does not bless; but if he is poor and rejoices in them, he blesses. Gloss: and some say that even a poor man does not bless over a shirt, shoes and the like, and such is the practice (Tur in the name of Tosafot, and Terumat haDeshen 36). It is customary to say to one who puts on a new garment: “wear it out and renew it”. And one authority wrote that this is not said over shoes or garments made from animal hides, since another animal would then have to be put to death first so that another garment might be renewed from it, and it is written “and His mercies are over all His works” (Maharil Weil in his rulings) — and behold the reason is very weak and does not appear sound; nevertheless people are careful not to say it.
The Mechaber rules like the Rosh. He writes « ואם הוא עני ושמח בהם יברך » (שו״ע או״ח רכ״ג:ו), and the Beit Yosef already held it: « והרא״ש כתב ויראה לי הכל לפי מה שהוא אדם דיש עני ששמח בחלוק יותר מעשיר בכלים חשובים » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רכ״ג). summary: the threshold is not in the object but in the one who receives it — there is no tariff for joy.
The Rama rules otherwise, and gives the practice. The gloss: « ויש אומרים דאפילו עני אינו מברך על חלוק ומנעלים וכדומה וכן נוהגין » (רמ״א או״ח רכ״ג:ו). The Mishnah Berurah gives the reason: « ס״ל דדוקא בגד צמר וכדומה דבר שיש בהם חשיבות קצת דמי לדבר הבא מזמן לזמן דסתם ב״א מתחדשים להם לפרקים מועטים ושייך ע״ז שהחיינו » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:כג), and concludes: « ועיין בפמ״ג ובדה״ח שפסקו דלמעשה יש לנהוג דאפילו עני לא יברך על כלים שאינם חשובים כאלו » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:כד). summary: on this view the difficulty is not value but frequency — שהחיינו wants something that does not come round every day.
What the seif’s list covers. The Mishnah Berurah extends it: « וה״ה שאר כלים שאין חשובים ואין דרך לשמוח בהם » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:כב). And the Aruch HaShulchan explains the dividing line: « אבל חלוק ומנעלים ואנפלאות וכדומה תדירים הם להתחדש » (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רכ״ג). summary: the list is not closed; what defines it is that such things are replaced without a thought.
An attempt to reconcile. The Magen Avraham reports it: « ורדב״ז כ׳ שהתוס׳ איירי בעשיר אבל בעני מברך » (מגן אברהם או״ח סימן רכ״ג). summary: according to the Radbaz, Tosafot spoke only of a rich man — in which case the two views coincide, and the poor man does indeed bless.
The custom of תבלה ותחדש, and its reservation. The Rama: « המנהג לומר למי שלובש בגד חדש תבלה ותחדש » (רמ״א או״ח רכ״ג:ו); then the reservation about leather, of which he himself says « והנה הטעם חלוש מאוד ואינו נראה מ״מ מקפידים על זה שלא לאמרו » (רמ״א או״ח רכ״ג:ו). The Mishnah Berurah defines its scope: « אפי׳ טמאה ואפי׳ הוא ממין אחר רק שתפור תחתיו מעורות בהמה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:כה). summary: a rare place where the gloss upholds a custom while saying outright that its reason does not stand — the force of received practice, not of the argument.
The siman in one sentence: the same three wordings as in the previous siman, but laid upon things rather than upon news — and two new measures: בשעת הקנין, the moment while the joy is fresh, and דבר שאינו חשוב, the threshold below which there is nothing left to bless.

Practical cases

Case 1 — A son has just been born

Situation: I am told that my wife has just given birth to a boy. What should I say, and what should she say?
Conduct: The seif opens the siman with it: « ילדה אשתו זכר מברך הטוב והמטיב וגם היא צריכה לברך כן: » (שו״ע או״ח רכ״ג:א), and the Gemara gives the reason: « והתניא: אמרו ליה ילדה אשתו זכר, אומר ״ברוך … It makes no difference that one was away: « ואפילו לא ראה בעצמו רק שמע כשהיה בעיר אחרת » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:א). And if one did not bless at once, « ועיין בפמ״ג דאפילו אם לא בירך תיכף כששמע ג״כ יברך לכו״ע דעדיין הטובה נמשכת » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:ג). summary: two separate blessings, one by the father and one by the mother, because the good really belongs to them both. In practice, follow your Rav.

Case 2 — I buy a new garment

Situation: I buy a coat. Must I bless, at what moment, and what happens when I wear it?
If the garment must still go to the tailor: « ודוקא אם קנה בגד שראוי ללובשו תיכף אבל אם קנה שום דבר שאינו ראוי ללובשו או להשתמש בו כמו שהוא רק שצריך ליתן לאומן לתקן לא יברך שהחיינו עד שעה שילבש הבגד או ישתמש בהכלי » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:יז). And on the order of the two blessings: « היינו קודם שהחיינו. אכן אם לובש הבגד שחרית יכול לצאת בברכת מלביש ערומים שמברך בברכת השחר » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:יח). summary: one blesses at the purchase if the object is usable as it stands, and מלביש ערומים is said when putting it on. In practice, follow your Rav.

Case 3 — I am given a gift

Situation: Someone gives me a fine object as a gift. Is it שהחיינו or הטוב והמטיב? And does the giver bless?
Conduct: The letter of the Shulchan Aruch says « קנה כלים שמשתמשין בהם הוא ובני ביתו מברך הטוב והמטיב אם נתנו לו במתנה מברך הטוב והמטיב שהיא טובה לו ולנותן: » (שו״ע או״ח רכ״ג:ה); but the Beur Halacha rules in practice: « והנה לדינא הכרענו למעשה דלא יברך הטוב ומטיב מחמת אלו הפוסקים דס״ל דהירושלמי חולק בזה עם הבבלי ובודאי אנן נקטינן כהבבלי וע״כ יברך שהחיינו לבד » (ביאור הלכה סימן רכ״ג), and the Mishnah Berurah writes « ולמעשה נראה דטוב יותר לנהוג בזה לברך ברכת שהחיינו ולא ברכת הטוב כאשר ביררנו בבה״ל » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:כא). As to the giver: « המקבל מתנה אבל הנותן לכו״ע לא יברך » (ביאור הלכה סימן רכ״ג). And on what falls outside the rule: « היינו דוקא כלים או בגדים שהמקבל משמח בזה אבל לא מעות שעי״ז מתבייש יותר ולא יוכל ע״ז לברך » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ג:כ). summary: a point on which the Mechaber and the Mishnah Berurah diverge in practice; one decides according to one’s Rav.

Comprehension questions

Check your understanding:
  1. Why does the birth of a boy call for הטוב והמטיב rather than שהחיינו (ברכות נ״ט ע״ב)?
  2. How can two opposite blessings be said over a single event (seif 2)?
  3. What does “new” mean in seif 3, and what does that word exclude?
  4. Why is the blessing said at the acquisition rather than at the use (seif 4)?
  5. What exactly is at stake between Tosafot and the Rosh in seif 6?
