1. The axiom: health and life — סכנתא חמירא מאיסורא

The starting point:

Siman 116 no longer deals with טומאה or mixtures (meat / milk), but with an entirely different foundation: the Torah commands us to preserve life and health. Certain foods and practices are forbidden not because they are טמא, but because they are dangerous (סכנה) or repugnant (בל תשקצו). The master principle, laid down by the Rama (seif 5), is: "סַכַּנְתָּא חֲמִירָא מֵאִיסּוּרָא" — danger is graver than prohibition; we worry more about a doubtful danger than a doubtful prohibition. Hence the rule of conduct: "שׁוֹמֵר נַפְשׁוֹ יִרְחַק" — one who guards his soul keeps far from peril.
RegisterDanger (סכנה)Ordinary prohibition (איסור)
Severity of the doubt (ספק)We follow the stringency: ספק סכנה prevailsBy the usual rules of ספק
Nullification / ביטולMore severe (Taz: even ביבש במינו, sixty)בטל בששים / as the case requires
The cause gone (בטל הטעם)The prohibition lapses (גילוי — no serpents)Holds if "נמנה במנין" (חלב, 115)
💡 The marker: this siman does not read like the rest of Yoreh De'ah. The logic is not "pure / impure" but "dangerous / safe". Two consequences: (1) a danger-decree that depends on its reason lapses when the reason disappears (גילוי today); (2) where the danger remains, we are stricter than for a prohibition — and we do not rely on a miracle.

2. The 3 reflex questions

■ IS THERE DANGER? (סכנה) — is the matter a peril to the body (גילוי, meat-fish משום צרעת, זיעה, רוח רעה, risky practices) or a matter of disgust (בל תשקצו)? If danger → we rule by the stringency (seif 1-6).
↓ we look at the cause
■ DOES THE CAUSE PERSIST? (בטל הטעם בטלה הגזרה) — does the danger that motivated the prohibition still exist? No serpents → גילוי lifted (seif 1). But the חלב (115) "נמנה במנין" does not lapse. And the meat-fish separation, the danger being held permanent, remains in force (seif 2-3).
↓ we look at the level
■ LE-CHATCHILA OR BEDIAVAD? (לכתחילה / בדיעבד) — many dinim here distinguish the ideal conduct (do not cook/roast together, do not leave under the bed) from the bediavad (the ריחא alone, the food left under the bed per the Shvut Yaakov). But the actual danger (cooked together) does not vanish bediavad (seif 2, 5).

⚖ The great principle (seif 5)

The Rama raises the duty of caution into a general rule: keep away from everything that leads to danger, for "סכנתא חמירא מאיסורא" and we worry more about a doubtful danger than a doubtful prohibition. Hence: do not pass by a leaning wall, do not walk alone at night, flee the city at the onset of an epidemic ("ולא בסופו"), "שומר נפשו ירחק" — and it is forbidden to rely on a miracle or to endanger one's life (cf. חושן משפט סי' תכ״ז).

3. The master grid: the six-danger grid

An absolute must to memorize. Basis: Mehaber seifim 1-7, read with the Rama, the Taz and the Pitchei Teshuva.

The dangerStatus le-chatchilaBediavad / today
גילוי (uncovered drink, serpent's venom) — seif 1 Forbidden of old 🟢 Lifted: "serpents are not among us" (the Gra stayed cautious)
Meat and fish (together, קשה לצרעת) — seif 2-3 Forbidden to eat / roast together (Rama: משום ריחא) 🟡 The ריחא alone → permitted; truly cooked together → forbidden even bediavad
קינוח והדחה (between meat and fish) — seif 2-3 Eat / drink something between the two (custom) 🟡 Rama / י״א: we worry only when cooked together
זיעה (human sweat = סם המוות) — seif 4 Forbidden, all sweat 🟢 Except the sweat of the face
Dangerous practices (coins in the mouth, under the bed, knife in an etrog…) — seif 5 Forbidden — "שומר נפשו ירחק" 🟡 Under the bed: bediavad permitted (Shvut Yaakov, PT)
מסוכנת (imperiled animal, permitted by שחיטה or סברא) — seif 7 Permitted by law 🔴 The המדקדקים / the בעל נפש abstain
📌 Key reading: first ask danger or disgust?, then does the cause still hold? (גילוי lifted vs meat-fish maintained). And keep the residual caution: even where the din is lenient (under the bed bediavad, the ריחא alone), the בעל נפש's posture is to keep far from peril.

4. The 5 golden rules

  1. "סכנתא חמירא מאיסורא". Danger is graver than prohibition; a doubtful danger prevails over a doubtful prohibition (Rama seif 5).
  2. "שומר נפשו ירחק". Keep away from everything that leads to danger; forbidden to rely on a miracle or to risk one's life (Rama seif 5; חו״מ תכ״ז).
  3. Meat and fish: do not cook/roast together + קינוח והדחה. Eat and drink something between meat and fish; cooked together → forbidden even bediavad (Mehaber + Rama seif 2-3).
  4. בטל הטעם בטלה הגזרה. The גילוי, a decree dependent on its reason, is lifted (no serpents) — opposite to the חלב (115) "נמנה במנין" (Mehaber seif 1; Taz s.k. 1).
  5. בל תשקצו. Forbidden to consume the repugnant, or in dirty utensils; the בעל נפש abstains from the מסוכנת (Mehaber seif 6-7).

5. Mnemonic — the "SAKANA" memory aid

"S-A-K-A-N-A" — סכנה, the thread of the siman
The ladder of the decree's cause (seif 1-2)

6. The 4 classic pitfalls

❌ Pitfall 1 — Thinking danger is nullified like an ordinary prohibition: we are used to a prohibition being בטל בששים. But danger is more severe: per the Taz (s.k. 2), a דבר שיש בו סכנה, for nullification, is treated more stringently — אפילו ביבש במינו צריך ששים. And the ארס נחש (venom) is simply not nullified. Never reason "sixty and it's done" whenever there is סכנה.
❌ Pitfall 2 — Neglecting קינוח והדחה between meat and fish: this is no optional custom. The practice, after meat and before fish (and vice versa), is to eat and drink something between the two (instead of rinsing hands and mouth). It is one of the few דיני סכנה of the Choulhan Aroukh still alive in daily life. And the concern applies too to goose fat that fell into a fish dish (PT s.k. 2), with no distinction between fowl and cattle.
❌ Pitfall 3 — Confusing the lifted גילוי and the maintained חלב: both are "ancient" decrees, but their fate differs. The גילוי (seif 1) was not נאסר במנין: it holds only as long as there are serpents — "today they are not among us → permitted" (Taz s.k. 1). The חלב (siman 115), by contrast, was נמנה במנין and holds even where its origin is known. Do not transfer the leniency of גילוי to the חלב.
❌ Pitfall 4 — Forgetting the residual caution: even where the din is lenient — under the bed bediavad permitted (Shvut Yaakov), the ריחא alone permitted, גילוי lifted — the בעל נפש keeps the posture of distancing from peril: the של״ה and the Gra stayed cautious for the גילוי; the Gra even extends to raw foods ("האידנא דדשים בה רבים"). The rule "שומר נפשו ירחק" does not expire with the letter of the din.

7. Recap of the 7 seifim — one line each

SeifTopicThe essential
1גילוי (uncovered drink)Drinks left uncovered were forbidden for fear a serpent injected its venom. Today, since serpents are not among us → permitted. Taz s.k. 1: this is not a דבר שנאסר במנין (≠ חלב, 115). PT s.k. 1: the של״ה and the Gra stayed cautious.
2Meat and fish (not together)Do not eat meat and fish together (קשה לצרעת). Rama: do not roast them together (משום ריחא); bediavad the ריחא alone does not forbid. Rinse the hands and eat bread between the two; custom: eat and drink something between the two (קינוח והדחה).
3Meat and fish cooked togetherTruly cooked together → forbidden even bediavad: the danger is more severe (Taz s.k. 2: treated as a prohibition for nullification, and more — אפילו ביבש במינו צריך ששים). Rama / י״א: we worry only when cooked together. PT s.k. 2: goose fat in a fish dish = the same concern.
4זיעה (human sweat)All human sweat = סם המוות (deadly poison); one does not eat a food on which it dripped. Exception: the sweat of the face, which is not dangerous.
5Dangerous practices & the great principleDo not put coins in the mouth, nor the palm under the armpit, nor bread; do not leave food/drink under the bed (רוח רעה); do not plant a knife in an etrog. Rama: keep from all danger — סכנתא חמירא מאיסורא, שומר נפשו ירחק, do not rely on a miracle; flee the epidemic from its onset (חו״מ תכ״ז). PT s.k. 4: under the bed bediavad permitted (Shvut Yaakov).
6בל תשקצו (the repugnant)Forbidden to eat/drink what is repugnant (mixed with vomit, excrement, fetid pus), or in dirty utensils (toilet vessels, bloodletting cups), or with soiled hands — "אַל תְּשַׁקְּצוּ אֶת נַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶם". Taz s.k. 6: מכת מרדות, not מלקות (lav she-bichlalut).
7מסוכנת (imperiled animal)An animal in danger of death (mesukenet), even rendered permitted by שחיטה, the scrupulous (המדקדקים) abstain from it. Rama: an animal permitted by a sage's reasoning (סברא) alone, where the din is not explicit, the בעל נפש does not eat of it (PT s.k. 10).

⚖ The reflex in 3 questions

  1. Danger or disgust? סכנה → we rule by stringency (סכנתא חמירא מאיסורא); בל תשקצו → we abstain from the repugnant.
  2. Does the cause hold? גילוי lifted (no serpents); meat-fish and חלב (115) maintained.
  3. Le-chatchila or bediavad? Do not cook together, do not leave under the bed; and always "שומר נפשו ירחק" without relying on a miracle.
