📑 Outline of the synthesis

  1. The axiom: a fixed veset exempts from bedika; without a veset, the machloket and the custom
  2. The 3 reflex questions: does she have a veset · how many times · who holds the עד
  3. The master grid: fixed veset, without a veset, the 14 days, נאמנות, מסולקת דמים
  4. The 5 golden rules
  5. Mnemonic — the "BEDIKA" memory aid
  6. The 4 classic pitfalls
  7. Recap of the 5 seifim — one line each

1. The axiom: a fixed veset exempts from bedika; without a veset, the machloket and the custom

The starting point:

Siman 186 no longer speaks of the separation near the veset (siman 184) nor of the woman's word about herself (siman 185), but of a concrete question: is a bedika required before and after relations? The answer pivots on a single criterion — does the woman have a fixed veset? If so: no bedika is required, neither before nor after, and on the contrary it is better that she not examine herself before her husband at the time of relations, "שֶׁלֹּא יְהֵא לִבּוֹ נוֹקְפוֹ וּפוֹרֵשׁ". Without a fixed veset, this is a machloket between the Mehaber/Rambam/Rosh (who require a bedika) and the Shach, who rules that "אין צריך בדיקה כלל" even without a veset — "וכן עמא דבר", such is the prevailing custom.

Woman with a fixed vesetNone — and let her not examine herself before her husband (לבו נוקף)Mehaber seif 1
Woman without a fixed vesetPer the Rishonim: yes (3 times); per the Shach: "אין צריך בדיקה כלל", וכן עמא דברMehaber seif 2 · Shach
Woman who only sees after 14 daysWithin those 14 days: like a woman with a fixed vesetMehaber seif 3
💡 The marker: this siman does not ask "how much" of a mixture, but "is there a fixed veset, and what does the custom say?" A fixed veset stands as a חזקה that she does not see at relations: it exempts. Where there is no veset, the Rishonim's bedika is largely eased by the custom (Shach). And the discretion — not examining herself before the husband — is a matter of שלום בית no less than of halacha.

2. The 3 reflex questions

■ DOES SHE HAVE A FIXED VESET? (יש לה וסת) — if yes → no bedika before or after; we even avoid her examining herself before the husband (לבו נוקף). The fixed veset acts as a חזקה that she does not see at relations (seif 1).
↓ if not, we look at how many times
■ HOW MANY TIMES? (ג׳ פעמים) — without a veset, the Rishonim require a bedika before and after the first 3 times; if she is הוחזקה that she does not see machmat tashmish → no more bedika. But the Shach: "אין צריך בדיקה כלל", וכן עמא דבר (seif 2).
↓ we look at who holds the עד
■ WHO HOLDS THE עד? (נאמנות) — the husband may let his wife examine herself with his own עד: "מתוך שנאמנת על שלה נאמנת על שלו" (seif 4). And bleeding repeated at relations (3 times) → ro'ah machmat tashmish, the gravity of siman 187 (seif 5).

⚖ The Shach's custom (seif 2)

For the Mehaber, the Rambam and the Rosh, a woman without a fixed veset does, in principle, a bedika before and after (he with his עד, she with hers). The Shach (s.k. 2), reading the רי״ף as do all the poskim, rules that "אין צריך בדיקה כלל" even without a veset, and that "וכן עמא דבר" — such is the custom. The תורת השלמים (Pithei Teshuva s.k. 2) adds: where the custom is lenient, do not be stringent. For each person's practice, refer to your Rav.

3. The master grid: veset, bedika, נאמנות and מסולקת דמים

An absolute must to memorize. Basis: Mehaber seifim 1-5, read with the Shach (s.k. 1-2), the Pitchei Teshuva (s.k. 1-4) and the Sidrei Tahara.

SituationDecisive criterionResult
Woman with a fixed veset חזקה that she does not see at relations 🟢 No bedika; and let her not examine herself before the husband (לבו נוקף)
Woman without a veset (Rishonim) First 3 times, before + after 🟡 Bedika the 3 times; הוחזקה → no more bedika
Woman without a veset (Rambam / Rosh) Always before + after (+ the husband after) 🟡 Bedika maintained as long as there is no veset
Woman without a veset (Shach, the custom) "אין צריך בדיקה כלל", וכן עמא דבר 🟢 No bedika required; refer to your Rav
Woman who only sees after 14 days Within those 14 days = like a fixed veset 🟢 No bedika in that window
נאמנות: the husband's עד נאמנת על שלה → נאמנת על שלו 🟢 She may examine herself with the husband's עד
מסולקת דמים (pregnancy / nursing) בתולת דמים, מעוברת, מניקה 🟢 Exempt from bedika even without a veset
Ro'ah machmat tashmish 3 times Bleeding linked to relations, repeated 🔴 Forbidden to this husband forever → siman 187
📌 Key reading: in veset / bedika, first ask is there a fixed veset (otherwise it is decided by the Shach's custom). For נאמנות, remember "נאמנת על שלה → נאמנת על שלו". And everywhere, bleeding repeated at relations (3 times) is no trifle: it is the ro'ah machmat tashmish, and the rest is treated in siman 187, with a Rav and often a physician.

4. The 5 golden rules

  1. Fixed veset → no bedika. Neither before nor after relations; on the contrary, let her not examine herself before the husband, "שלא יהא לבו נוקפו ופורש" (Mehaber seif 1).
  2. Without a veset, it is a machloket. The Rishonim require a bedika (the first 3 times or always); the Shach rules "אין צריך בדיקה כלל", וכן עמא דבר (Mehaber + Shach seif 2).
  3. הוחזקה over 3 times → we stop. If over those 3 times she does not see machmat tashmish → no more bedika (Mehaber seif 2).
  4. "נאמנת על שלה → נאמנת על שלו". She may examine herself even with her husband's עד (Mehaber seif 4).
  5. Ro'ah machmat tashmish 3 times → forbidden to this husband. Forever; the detail is treated in siman 187 (Mehaber seif 5).

5. Mnemonic — the "BEDIKA" memory aid

"B-E-D-I-K-A" — to forget nothing of the siman
The ladder of exemption from bedika

6. The 4 classic pitfalls

❌ Pitfall 1 — Believing a bedika is always required: a woman with a fixed veset has no bedika to do before or after relations, and even without a veset, the prevailing custom (Shach, "אין צריך בדיקה כלל, וכן עמא דבר") does not require it. Do not read the Rishonim's bedika as a universal obligation: it is a machloket settled, in practice, by the custom (seif 2).
❌ Pitfall 2 — Examining herself before the husband: precisely because a bedika at the time of relations may arouse suspicion and lead to separation, the Mehaber writes that it is better that she not examine herself before him, "שלא יהא לבו נוקפו ופורש" (seif 1). The discretion here is not negligence: it is שלום בית that takes precedence.
❌ Pitfall 3 — Ignoring the Shach's custom: faced with a woman without a veset, one might think the bedika strictly mandatory; but the Shach (s.k. 2), reading the רי״ף, rules that "אין צריך בדיקה כלל" and that "וכן עמא דבר". The תורת השלמים adds not to be stringent where the custom is lenient. For each person's practice, it is decided with a Rav.
❌ Pitfall 4 — Trivializing the ro'ah machmat tashmish: bleeding linked to relations, repeated 3 consecutive times, is no detail: it renders the woman forbidden to this husband forever (seif 5), and the entire sequel is treated in siman 187. This question has a medical dimension no less than a halachic one — it is never decided alone.

For the halacha le-ma'aseh, consult your Rav (or a qualified Yoetzet, and a physician for the ro'ah machmat tashmish).

7. Recap of the 5 seifim — one line each

SeifTopicThe essential
1Fixed veset → no bedikaWoman with a fixed veset: no bedika before, nor after; on the contrary, let her not examine herself before the husband ("שלא יהא לבו נוקפו ופורש"). Rambam: requires a bedika afterward (she and he, each with an עד); the צנועות examine even before. The 1st opinion is עיקר, and such is the custom.
2Without a fixed veset → the machloketThe first 3 times, bedika before and after; הוחזקה that she does not see machmat tashmish → no more bedika. Rambam/Rosh: always, as long as there is no veset. Rama: one wipes (מקנחין) all night with an עד, bedika the next day; lost עד → no relations until a bedika. Shach: "אין צריך בדיקה כלל", וכן עמא דבר.
3The 14 days = like a fixed vesetA woman who never sees before 14 days after the tevila (then without fixity): within those 14 days, her status is like that of a woman with a fixed veset — no bedika in that window.
4נאמנות: the husband's עדThe husband may let his wife examine herself with his own עד: since she is believed on hers, she is believed on his — "מתוך שנאמנת על שלה נאמנת על שלו".
5Ro'ah machmat tashmishA woman who sees blood on account of relations, 3 consecutive times → forbidden to this husband forever; all the detail (the bedikot, the remedies, the status) is treated in siman 187.

⚖ The reflex in 3 questions

  1. Does she have a fixed veset? If yes → no bedika, and let her not examine herself before the husband (לבו נוקף).
  2. If not, what does the custom say? The Rishonim's machloket, but the prevailing custom (Shach) does not require a bedika — it is decided with a Rav.
  3. What is the context? 14 days / מסולקת דמים → exemption; bleeding repeated at relations → ro'ah machmat tashmish (siman 187).
