1. The axiom: וסת קבוע vs שאינו קבוע, and the onah beinonit

The starting point:

Siman 189 organizes the whole tracking of the periods (וסתות): around the time a woman is accustomed to seeing, one is concerned about a possible sighting (חשש וסת) and abstains for that onah. Two statuses govern everything: the woman with no fixed veset "חוששת ליום ל׳ לראייתה" — she is concerned for the 30th day from her last sighting, the onah beinonit "לסתם נשים" (§1). A woman with a וסת קבוע at a known time (every 20 days, every 25…) is concerned for that known time (§1). A veset is established in 3 times (and 4 sightings for the veset of הפלגות, the 1st not counting for lack of an interval — §2) and is uprooted only in 3 times (§14-15).
StatusWhen is she concerned? If the onah passes without seeing
No fixed veset (שאינו קבוע)The onah beinonit: the 30th day (and other un-established concerns)Passed without בדיקה or sighting → permitted (§4)
וסת קבוע (at the known time)At the known time (day, interval, day of month…)Must perform בדיקה even if the onah passed without הרגשה (§4)
The onah beinonit (30 d)Has the status of a וסת קבוע as to its weight"דינה כוסת קבוע" (§4)
💡 The marker: the whole siman reads along two axes — קבוע / שאינו קבוע (the strength of the חזקה) and וסת הימים / וסת הגוף (the cause: the date, or a sign of the body). A veset is established in 3 and uprooted in 3; but one is concerned from a single time (§21, 26) for a sighting not yet established.

2. The 3 reflex questions

■ DOES SHE HAVE A FIXED VESET? (קבוע / שאינו קבוע) — no וסת קבוע → she is concerned for the onah beinonit (30th day) and any un-established sighting. וסת קבוע → she is concerned at the known time (§1, 4).
↓ we look at the type of fixation
■ FIXED ON WHAT? (הפלגה / חודש / שבוע / גוף) — on the interval (הפלגות, 4 sightings), the day of the month or of the week (שווים / שאינם שווים, דילוג, סירוג), or on a sign of the body (וסת הגוף: פיהוק…) — each is established in 3 (§2, 5-13, 19-23).
↓ we look at the change
■ ESTABLISHING OR UPROOTING? (3 times) — a וסת קבוע is uprooted only after 3 times without seeing; it returns to its place if she sees again at the old time. A veset fixed by אונס alone is not a veset (§14-18).

⚖ The logic of the חזקות (3 times)

A veset rests on a חזקה: three regular sightings establish it, three misses uproot it. Hence: one establishes in 3 (4 for the הפלגות); one uproots in 3; but a single sighting, not yet raised to a חזקה, already suffices to create a חשש for the corresponding onah (§21, 26). The complexity of the computation (intervals, דילוג, סירוג, day/night) requires, in practice, recourse to a Rav.

3. The master grid: the 8 families of וסתות

An absolute must to memorize. Basis: Mehaber §1-34, read with the Rama, the Taz (very developed on establishing and uprooting), the Shach, and the Acharonim of nidah (Sidrei Tahara, Chochmat Adam, Aruch haShulchan).

FamilySeifimThe essential
1. onah beinonit & וסת קבוע — the bedrock §1, 4 No fixed → 30th day; fixed → known time. The קבוע requires a בדיקה even when passed without הרגשה
2. establishing a veset — how it is fixed §2-3 3 equal times (4 sightings for the הפלגות); a וסת לשעות is nullified in one hour, even without בדיקה
3. הפלגות & דילוג — the interval §5 A period based on the interval (haflagah); a regular דילוג (30, 31, 32…) establishes a veset
4. day of month / day of week §6-13 By day of month / week, שווים and שאינם שווים, דילוג, סירוג (1st sighting counts), ר״ח; always in the same עונה (day/night)
5. uprooting a veset — change / remove §14-16 A וסת קבוע is uprooted only in 3 times; return to the old veset; uprooting the ר״ח veset (3 ר״ח without seeing)
6. וסת מחמת אונס & קפיצה §17-18 Fixed by אונס alone → not a veset (but חוששת like a שאינו קבוע); קפצה וראתה 3× at a fixed date → קבעה
7. וסתות הגוף — signs of the body §19-26 פיהוק (yawning), sneezing, pains, garlic / onion / pepper (Rama); isolate the cause (הוברר הדבר); each in 3, חוששת in one, nullified in one
8. קטנה / זקנה / מעוברת / מניקה & veset within a veset §27-34 A קטנה fixes like others; זקנה (3 עונות without seeing = מסולקת דמים); וסת בתוך וסת; מעוברת / מניקה (24 months) = מסולקת דמים, then return (cf. 184)
📌 Key reading: facing a case, first ask the status (קבוע / שאינו קבוע → 30th day), then the cause (date or body), then whether one establishes or uproots (3 times). And never forget that the מעוברת and the מניקה are מסולקות דמים — they are not even concerned for their old וסת קבוע (§34).

4. The 5 golden rules

  1. "חוששת ליום ל׳ לראייתה". With no וסת קבוע, the onah beinonit is the 30th day; it "דינה כוסת קבוע" (§1, 4).
  2. One establishes in 3, uproots in 3. 3 regular sightings establish (4 for the הפלגות); 3 misses uproot a וסת קבוע (§2, 14-15).
  3. "הוברר הדבר". When a sign (פיהוק) and a date coincide, one isolates the true cause through the time one occurs without the other (§20).
  4. A veset of אונס alone is not a veset. "שמפני האונס ראתה"; one is concerned for it like a שאינו קבוע, but it does not fix on its own (§17).
  5. מעוברת (once recognized) / מניקה (24 months) = מסולקות דמים. They do not fix, are not concerned for the old veset; then they return to it (§33-34, cf. 184).

5. Mnemonic — the "VESET" memory aid

"V-E-S-E-T" — after the veset itself
The ladder of fixation (establishing / uprooting)

6. The 4 classic pitfalls

❌ Pitfall 1 — Computing a veset case alone: the intervals (הפלגות), the דילוג, the סירוג, the day/night mixture and the nesting of periods (וסת בתוך וסת) form a combinatorics the Taz develops at length. Never rule alone on a real case of establishing or uprooting: the complexity of the veset computation requires recourse to a Rav.
❌ Pitfall 2 — Forgetting the onah beinonit: a woman with no וסת קבוע is not "without any concern." She is concerned for the 30th day from her last sighting (the onah beinonit "לסתם נשים"), which "דינה כוסת קבוע" (§1, 4). It is the reference day for most women; omitting it is a common practical error.
❌ Pitfall 3 — Confusing וסת הגוף and וסת הימים: the וסת הגוף is fixed by a physical sign (yawning / פיהוק, sneezing, abdominal / lower-belly pains, eating garlic / onion / pepper), not by the date. When a sign and a date coincide, one must isolate the cause ("הוברר הדבר" §20) — each is established in 3 and does not combine with the other (§23). One is concerned from one time (§21, 26).
❌ Pitfall 4 — Believing a veset of אונס fixed alone: "כל וסת שנקבע מחמת אונס… אינו וסת" — a sighting brought about by an אונס alone (קפיצה, a jump) does not fix a veset, because "שמפני האונס ראתה" (§17). One is concerned for it like a שאינו קבוע; but if the קפיצה occurs at a fixed date (3 ר״ח, 3 Sundays) → there she has קבעה (§18).

7. Recap by the 8 families — covering the 34 seifim

Family (seifim)TopicThe essential
1 (§1, 4)onah beinonit & וסת קבוע"כל אשה שאין לה וסת קבוע חוששת ליום ל׳ לראייתה" — no fixed → 30th day (onah beinonit); fixed → known time. The קבוע requires a בדיקה even if the עונה passed without הרגשה; the שאינה קבוע passed without seeing → permitted. The onah beinonit "דינה כוסת קבוע".
2 (§2-3)establishing a vesetFixed in 3 equal times; the veset of הפלגות requires 4 sightings (the 1st does not count, lacking a הפלגה). A וסת לשעות (with no fixed day): "נעקר בשעה אחת ואפילו בלא בדיקה".
3 (§5)הפלגות & דילוגThe period based on the interval (haflagah). The regular דילוג — a sighting, then at 30, then at 31, then at 32 — establishes "וסת לדילוג שלהפלגות", whether the shift is large or by a single day.
4 (§6-13)day of month / day of weekBy day of month or week, שווים ושאינם שווים, דילוג and חלילה (§7-8), ר״ח (§9), סירוג — skipping a month, the 1st sighting counts (§10-12). The day/night rule: always in the same עונה; a day/night mixture → חוששת for both (§13).
5 (§14-16)uprooting a vesetA change (§14): a וסת קבוע is uprooted only after 3 times; unequal sightings (30, 32, 34) → the old one is uprooted (§15); return to the old time → it resumes its place. Uprooting the ר״ח veset: 3 ר״ח without seeing → no longer concerned; sees again at ר״ח → it returns (§16).
6 (§17-18)וסת מחמת אונס & קפיצה"כל וסת שנקבע מחמת אונס… אינו וסת": a veset fixed by אונס alone (קפיצה) is not a veset — חוששת like a שאינו קבוע. But קפצה וראתה at a fixed date (3 ר״ח or 3 Sundays) → קבעה; no jump that day → not concerned (§18).
7 (§19-26)וסתות הגוףBy a sign of the body: פיהוק (yawning), sneezing, abdominal / lower-belly pains, chills (§19); Rama: י״א that one fixes a veset by eating garlic / onion / pepper (§23). One isolates the cause ("הוברר הדבר" §20); each is fixed in 3 and does not combine (§23); one is concerned from one time and it is nullified in one time (§21, 26). Concerned only at its time (§24-25).
8 (§27-34)קטנה / זקנה / מעוברת / מניקה & veset within a vesetThe קטנה / תינוקת fixes a veset like the others (3, or 4 for the הפלגות), with nuances (§27). The זקנה: 3 עונות without seeing = מסולקת דמים (§28-29); sees again → like a תינוקת (§30-31). וסת בתוך וסת: two nested periods (§32). מעוברת (once recognized) / מניקה (24 months): do not fix, are not concerned for the old veset (מסולקות דמים), then return at the end (§33-34, cf. 184).

⚖ The reflex in 3 questions

  1. What status? וסת קבוע → known time; שאינו קבוע → the onah beinonit (30th day).
  2. What cause, what regularity? הפלגה / חודש / שבוע / דילוג / סירוג, or a sign of the body (וסת הגוף) — each in 3.
  3. Does one establish or uproot? 3 times to establish (4 for the הפלגות), 3 to uproot; מעוברת / מניקה = מסולקות דמים.
Given the complexity of the veset computation, never rule alone on a real case: for the halacha le-ma'aseh, consult your Rav.
