📑 Outline of the synthesis

  1. The axiom: בעילת מצוה — the kalla becomes נדה through the דם בתולים
  2. The 3 reflex questions: was blood seen · when to count · which harchakot
  3. The master grid: בעילת מצוה, the Rama's leniencies, hefsek, counting and harchakot
  4. The 5 golden rules of the single seif
  5. Mnemonic — the "DAM BETULIM" memory aid
  6. The 4 classic pitfalls
  7. Recap of the ~5 rules of the single seif — one line each
  8. Final flashcard

1. The axiom: בעילת מצוה — the kalla becomes נדה through the דם בתולים

The starting point:

Siman 193 is a single seif, but it deals with a grave and intimate moment: the first union of the couple (בעילת מצוה). The act normally produces a bleeding — the דם בתולים — which renders the kalla נדה. The Mehaber's ruling is therefore clear and modest: the husband completes his act and then separates at once (פורש מיד); afterward the kalla makes a הפסק טהרה, performs the seven bedikot, and one counts from the 5th day. This synthesis is only a framework for study: every practical conclusion is settled with a Rav, a חתן-Rav, or a moret kalla.
PointMehaber (the principle)Rama (leniencies)
Status after the first unionטמאה (נדה) — even if she did not check and saw no bloodיש מקילין if she saw no blood
The separationפורש מיד — he completes and separates at onceLeniency if the act was not completed (הערה only) and no blood
The spirit of the lawStringency: perhaps a drop כחרדל covered by the שכבת זרעובעל נפש יחוש לעצמו — the scrupulous one guards himself
💡 The marker: this siman does not speak of an ordinary bleeding that one "sees or not," but of the union itself: a real union renders her נדה even without blood seen. The דם בתולים is treated with stringency because a tiny drop may have been covered. From there, the whole order of the נדה applies: פרישה, הפסק טהרה, seven bedikot, counting, harchakot.

2. The 3 reflex questions

■ WAS BLOOD SEEN? (דם בתולים) — after a real union, the kalla is נדה even without blood seen (the שכבת זרע may have covered a drop כחרדל). Only the Rama's leniencies (הערה only, no blood) can mitigate — and only on a Rav's instruction. The reflex answer is therefore not "no blood → permitted."
↓ we prepare the טהרה
■ WHEN TO BEGIN COUNTING? (יום ה' לשימושה) — the kalla makes a הפסק טהרה and checks for seven days, but she only begins counting on the 5th day of her union (Taz in the name of the Maharal of Prague) — and not on the 6th as the ordinary נדה (sim. 196).
↓ we observe the distances
■ WHICH HARCHAKOT? (with the bed leniency) — one observes all the דיני נדה regarding the הרחקות, except that the bed is here lenient: he is permitted to sleep in the bed after she has risen from it, even on the sheet where the blood is (unlike a full נדה).

⚖ The framework of the single seif

The single seif of קצ״ג links, in one movement, five rules: (1) בעילת מצוה → טמאה even without blood seen; (2) the Rama's leniencies (הערה, no blood) — to be applied with a Rav, ובעל נפש יחוש לעצמו; (3) הפסק טהרה + seven bedikot; (4) counting from the 5th day; (5) harchakot, with the bed leniency. All of this with guidance: the halacha le-ma'aseh is decided with a Rav, a חתן-Rav, or a moret kalla.

3. The master grid: בעילת מצוה, leniencies, hefsek, counting and harchakot

An absolute must to memorize, with gravity and modesty. Basis: Mehaber single seif, read with the Rama, the Taz (s.k. 1-4), the Shach, the Sidrei Tahara, the Hokhmat Adam and the Aroukh haShulchan.

SituationDecisive criterionResult
Real first union (Mehaber) בעילת מצוה completed 🔴 טמאה (נדה) even if she did not check and saw no blood
The separation after the act פורש מיד (Taz: באבר חי) 🔴 He completes and separates at once
The Rama's leniencies (Hagahot Maïmoni) הערה only / no blood seen 🟡 יש מקילין — only on a Rav's instruction; ובעל נפש יחוש לעצמו
Preparing the טהרה הפסק טהרה + seven bedikot 🟢 As any נדה: hefsek then checking the seven days
Start of counting יום ה' לשימושה (Taz / Maharal of Prague) 🟡 One counts from the 5th day (not the 6th of the ordinary נדה, sim. 196)
The distances between spouses all the דיני נדה / הרחקות 🔴 All the harchakot apply during this נדה
The bed after she has risen leniency specific to the דם בתולים 🟢 Permitted to sleep in this bed, even on the sheet where the blood is
📌 Key reading: in the בעילת מצוה, do not first ask "was blood seen?" but was the union real (otherwise הערה only → the Rama's leniency, with a Rav). For counting, remember the 5th day, not the 6th. For harchakot, remember they all apply, except the bed leniency specific to this case.

4. The 5 golden rules of the single seif

  1. בעילת מצוה → טמאה. A real union renders the kalla נדה even if she did not check and saw no blood — perhaps a drop כחרדל covered by the שכבת זרע (Mehaber).
  2. פורש מיד. The husband completes his act and separates at once (Taz: וגומר ביאתו = באבר חי); the דם בתולים is not treated as a trivial bleeding.
  3. The Rama's leniencies, with a Rav. יש מקילין if no blood, and the custom to be lenient if the act was only הערה without blood; but a real union → פרישה even without blood seen. ובעל נפש יחוש לעצמו (Rama).
  4. הפסק טהרה + seven bedikot, counting from the 5th day. She makes a הפסק טהרה, checks for seven days, and only begins counting on the 5th day of her union — יום ה' לשימושה (Taz in the name of the Maharal of Prague).
  5. Harchakot, with the bed leniency. All the דיני נדה regarding the הרחקות; except that here he is permitted to sleep in the bed after she has risen from it, even on the sheet where the blood is (Mehaber).

5. Mnemonic — the "DAM BETULIM" memory aid

"DAM" — the heart of the seif (דם בתולים)
The ladder of the five rules (single seif)

6. The 4 classic pitfalls

❌ Pitfall 1 — Believing that no blood seen = permitted: after a real union, the kalla is נדה even if she checked and found no blood — perhaps a drop "כחרדל" covered by the שכבת זרע (Mehaber). Never conclude "no blood seen → permitted." Only the Rama's leniencies (הערה only, no blood) can mitigate, and only on a Rav's instruction.
❌ Pitfall 2 — Forgetting to count from the 5th day: one knows the ordinary נדה begins counting on the 6th day (sim. 196), but after the first union one begins as early as the 5thיום ה' לשימושה (Taz in the name of the Maharal of Prague, הלכה למעשה). Applying the 6th day here out of habit is a frequent error.
❌ Pitfall 3 — Applying the leniencies without a Rav: the Rama's leniencies (יש מקילין if no blood; הערה only without blood) are not to be deduced alone. A real union requires the פרישה even without blood seen (Tour, most poskim), and ובעל נפש יחוש לעצמו. These delicate nuances are decided with a Rav, a חתן-Rav, or a moret kalla.
❌ Pitfall 4 — Confusing the bed leniency with a full נדה: for a full נדה, the husband does not sleep on her bed, even in her absence. Here, by contrast, he is permitted to sleep in this same bed after she has risen, even on the sheet where the blood is — because it is דם בתולים. For the rest, all the harchakot apply.

For the halacha le-ma'aseh, consult your Rav, a חתן-Rav, or a moret kalla.

7. Recap of the ~5 rules of the single seif — one line each

RuleTopicThe essential
1בעילת מצוה → טמאהA real union renders the kalla נדה (דם בתולים), even if she did not check and saw no blood (perhaps a drop כחרדל covered by the שכבת זרע). The husband completes and separates at once — פורש מיד (Taz: באבר חי).
2The Rama's lenienciesיש מקילין if she saw no blood (Hagahot Maïmoni); custom to be lenient if the act was only הערה without blood; but a real union → פרישה even without blood seen (Tour, most poskim). ובעל נפש יחוש לעצמו. To be applied only with a Rav.
3הפסק טהרה + seven bedikotShe makes a הפסק טהרה and checks for seven days, as any נדה preparing to count her seven days (following the order of sim. 196).
4מניין מיום ה'She only begins counting on the 5th day of her union — יום ה' לשימושה (Taz in the name of the Maharal of Prague). And not the 6th day of the ordinary נדה (sim. 196). הלכה למעשה.
5הרחקות + the bed leniencyOne observes all the דיני נדה regarding the הרחקות; except that a full נדה forbids him to sleep on her bed even in her absence, whereas here he is permitted to sleep in this bed after she has risen, even on the sheet where the blood is.

⚖ The reflex in 3 questions

  1. Was the union real? Yes → טמאה (נדה) even without blood seen, פורש מיד. Only an הערה without blood opens the Rama's leniency, with a Rav.
  2. How to prepare the טהרה and count? הפסק טהרה + seven bedikot; one counts from the 5th day (not the 6th of the ordinary נדה).
  3. Which harchakot? All those of the נדה, with the bed leniency (sleeping in the bed after she has risen, even on the sheet with the blood).
