1. Opening of the sugya — שתפסוק בטהרה and the principle of a count opened on purity
The foundation — counting from the following day, and שתפסוק בטהרה
The foundation of the siman: for the count of the seven clean days to be hers and for her to be fit to immerse, two conditions. (a) The count מתחילין ממחרת יום שפסקה בו(שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:א) — that is, from the following day; the day she stopped does not itself enter the count. (b) Before the count there must be a hefsek tahara: a bedika on the day she stopped, שתפסוק בטהרה(שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:א) — so that she knows with certainty that the flow has ended.
From this follows everything the siman unfolds: there is no count unless it opens on an established purity — and that is the root of the whole series of bedikot that follows.
The root of a count for purity. The verse says וְסָפְרָה לָּהּ שִׁבְעַת יָמִים(ויקרא ט״ו:כ״ח), and the Gemara reads it לְעַצְמָהּ(כתובות ע״ב ע״א): it is she who counts, for herself. The poskim derive from this that the bedika of the hefsek is not a mere precaution but what makes the count possible: without a cessation established in purity, no count begins at all. The Shulchan Arukh says so itself at seif 5 — בחזקת טמאה עד שתפסוק בטהרה(שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:ה). The first bedika is therefore a condition of the count; those of the seven days are its fulfilment and its safeguard.
The source of the sugya — נדה ס״ח ע״ב. The din of counting seven clean days and of the hefsek tahara is rooted in the Gemara in נדה, around Rabbi Yehuda's mishna about the woman who הִפְרִישָׁה בְּטָהֳרָה; then in the Rishonim — Rosh, Rashba in תורת הבית, Ramban, Tur — who set out the measure of the bedikot, the cloth, and the proximity to בין השמשות. The Beit Yosef gathered their shitot, and the Mechaber ruled: « ובדיקה זו תהיה סמוך לבין השמשות » (שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:א), as close as possible to the end of the day, so that her purity is established right through it.
2. The hefsek tahara and its nature — סמוך לבין השמשות and the מוך דחוק
This is the heart of the siman: what exactly a hefsek tahara is, its proper time, and the din of the מוך דחוק when she saw only one day.
The text of the Mechaber and the Rama (seif 2)
The chakira — what is a hefsek tahara? Is the bedika of the hefsek an establishing of fact (it shows there is no longer any blood), or an act that renders fit, without which no count begins? From seif 1 — the bedika must be « ובדיקה זו תהיה סמוך לבין השמשות » (שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:א) — and from seif 5 — בחזקת טמאה עד שתפסוק בטהרה(שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:ה) — it emerges that it renders fit and does not merely establish. That is why it was required at the very end of the day: so that a sighting later that same day should not contradict it.
The root of the machloket — the מוך דחוק through the whole of בין השמשות:
Shita
The measure of the bedika when she saw only one day
Source
The Mechaber (the din itself)
She saw only one day and stopped that same day: she needs a מוך דחוק that remains throughout בין השמשות — a time of doubt, day or night, where full clarification is required
Rashba and Ramban (bedieved, per the Rama)
She made the bedika close to בין השמשות and found herself pure — סגי, that suffices, even without a מוך through the whole of בין השמשות
The reasoning of the מוך דחוק. A woman who saw only one day calls for extra care — the blood may still be present — and so they required of her a במוך דחוק(שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:ב), well inserted, remaining throughout בין השמשות, which is the time of doubt: if she is found pure at the end of the whole of בין השמשות, it is established retroactively that she had stopped. The Rashba and the Ramban held — and the Rama adopted this bedieved — that a hefsek bedika close to בין השמשות already clarifies of itself; they required the מוך to remain only lechatchila. The difference is therefore this: is the מוך the essence of the clarification (Mechaber) or a lechatchila reinforcement (Rama, bedieved)?
But the Rama at once adds a limit, and it is decisive for reading the machloket: אבל בדיקת שחרית לא מהני הואיל ולא ראתה רק יום אחד(רמ״א יו״ד קצ״ו:ב). The morning bedika, which suffices bedieved at seif 1 (רמ״א יו״ד קצ״ו:א), does not suffice here. The Taz gives the reason — הטעם הואיל ומעיינה פתוח ביום ההוא(ט״ז יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק ב) — and the Shach writes likewise ומעיינה פתוח(ש״ך יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק ו): on that day the source is still open. The Pitchei Teshuva reports in the name of the Dagul Merevava that it is not the morning bedika in particular: דלאו דוקא בדיקת שחרית אלא כל שהיתה קודם מנחה קטנה לא מהני ביום הראשון(פת״ש יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק ב).
Nafka mina. She saw one day and stopped; she made the bedika close to בין השמשות and found herself pure, but did not leave a מוך throughout בין השמשות: by the Mechaber's din something is lacking lechatchila, and by the Rama bedieved it suffices. Further: where she saw two or three days and then stopped, a hefsek bedika close to בין השמשות suffices for all the shitot, without a מוך throughout בין השמשות — this stringency bears on the single-day case. And for practice — ask your rav / your morat kala.
The commentaries on the nature of the hefsek. The Shach, at ס״ק א, glosses the Mechaber's words שתפסוק בטהרה in two words — בין השמשות(ש״ך יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק א): that is where the bedika must fall. On seif 2 the Taz (ט״ז יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק ב) and the Shach (ש״ך יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק ו) give the same reason for the single-day stringency, and the Shach adds, in the name of the מעדני מלך, that the nafka mina arises chiefly where she sees again in the middle of the days of the count: « דכיון שלא ראתה רק יום א׳ בימי הספירה בדיקת שחרית לא מהני אפילו בדיעבד » (ש״ך יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק ו). The Pitchei Teshuva (פת״ש יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק ב) widens the limit in the name of the Dagul Merevava. The Sidrei Tahara treats the gedarim of this bedika at length. And for practice — ask your rav / your morat kala.
The foundation — keeping the count clear of a doubt raised by a ketem:
After the hefsek tahara she must see to it that no doubt arises which would undo the count. Hence:
• חלוק הבדוק לה שאין בו כתם(שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:ג) — a checked garment, with no earlier ketem she might take for a sighting.
• סדינים הבדוקים מכתמים(שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:ג) — sheets checked for the night, so that no ketem comes to undo the count.
• ומנהג כשר הוא(רמ״א יו״ד קצ״ו:ג) — washing and white garments: on white cloth every shade shows and nothing can be attributed elsewhere; and washing removes traces of blood. The Rama adds that
And the count itself begins on the following day: the day of the hefsek does not enter it.
The custom of white garments — custom or obligation? The Rama's phrase, ומנהג כשר הוא(רמ״א יו״ד קצ״ו:ג), indicates that the matter is not from the letter of the din but a good custom: to wash and put on white at the time of the hefsek. Its reason is twofold — white supports the bedika, since every shade shows on it; washing removes traces of blood that might appear later and raise a doubt. The Rama does not thereby make it optional: he writes And he himself gives the limit, within the text of the seif: in a שעת הדחק — a woman travelling who has no garments — she may count her seven clean days provided the chaluk is clean and checked for blood. And for practice — ask your rav / your morat kala.
The commentaries on the white garments. The Shach, at ס״ק ז, refers elsewhere for the question of when the white garments are put on: « וע״ל סי׳ קצ״ט ס״ק י״ב מדין לבישת לבנים בשבת ויו״ט וט״ב ואבילות ויוה״כ » (ש״ך יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק ז). The Pitchei Teshuva, at ס״ק ג, reports in the name of the מעיל צדקה the case of a woman who finds a ketem during her days of libbun and makes a fresh hefsek tahara (פת״ש יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק ג). The Arukh HaShulchan treats washing and the white garments at his seif 22 (ערוך השולחן יו״ד קצ״ו:כ״ב). And for practice — ask your rav / your morat kala.
4. The bedikot of the seven days and their measure — lechatchila and bedieved

Chakira — what exactly is the bedika that is required? If, bedieved, one bedika in the seven days suffices, it appears that the daily bedika is not me'akev the count but only lechatchila. The underlying question remains: does the bedika establish that she did not see — the unchecked days then resting on a presumption — or does it render fit each day taken on its own? The Shulchan Arukh does not put the question in those terms, but its wording points: מאחר שבדקה ביום שקודם השביעי ומצאה טהורה עלו לה(שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:ד) — it is not any bedika at all that avails, but one placed before the seventh and which found purity; a single establishing of fact, rightly placed, holds up the whole. And the Mechaber at once reports, in the same seif, an opinion that requires the first and the seventh day — וי״א שצריך שתבדוק ביום ראשון מהשבעה וביום השביעי ואין להקל(שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:ד). We report, and we do not decide.
בחזקת טמאה עד שתפסוק בטהרה (seif 5) — no count without a hefsek. She made the bedika on the day she stopped and found herself impure, then found herself pure some days later: she does not add together the days in between, but remains בחזקת טמאה עד שתפסוק בטהרה(שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:ה) until she makes a true hefsek tahara, and she then counts from the following day. This reinforces the foundation set out in §1: there is no count without a cessation established in purity — the whole count opens on the hefsek, without it it does not open at all, and the days between the impure and the pure do not join. That too is why the woman who multiplies bedikot is praiseworthy (seif 9) is a surplus of clarification, not something that holds the count back.
The commentaries on the measure of the bedikot. The Shach, at ס״ק ח, specifies which single bedika is meant: תוך הז׳ נקיים מלבד הבדיק׳ דהפסק טהרה דלעיל סעיף א׳(ש״ך יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק ח) — it is within the seven, besides the bedika of the hefsek tahara. The Pitchei Teshuva reports at ס״ק ו the Dagul Merevava, דאפילו לא בדקה ביום ראשון ובדקה באחד מימים אמצעים וגם ביום שביעי גם הסמ״ג מודה שעלו לה, and then, from the same author in his responsa, the opposite position — דדוקא ראשון ושביעי בעינן(פת״ש יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק ו) — and at ס״ק ז the Chatam Sofer on the bedieved. The Taz's commentary does not stop on these seifim: his neighbouring entries are on seifim 1 and 2, and resume at seif 10. The Arukh HaShulchan treats the bedikot of the seven days at his seifim 23 to 26 (ערוך השולחן יו״ד קצ״ו:כ״ג–כ״ו). And for practice — ask your rav / your morat kala.
5. The cloth and what makes a bedika valid — פשתן ישן and חורין וסדקין
The foundation — three conditions in the instrument of the bedika:
• White, worn, soft — בבגד פשתן לבן ישן, או בצמר גפן או בצמר לבן נקי ורך(שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:ו): it is the white that supports the bedika, since any redness shows on it.
• The depth — לחורים ולסדקים, עד מקום שהשמש דש(שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:ו): she inserts it to the place that marital relations reach, so that no blood remains hidden; and the Mechaber specifies ולא שתכניסהו מעט לקנח עצמה(שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:ו).
• Examining the shade — she looks to see whether any redness is on it; and this is done by daylight: « והבדיקה תהיה לאור היום ולא לאור הנר » (רמ״א יו״ד קצ״ו:ד), ובדיעבד מהני אפילו לאור הנר(רמ״א יו״ד קצ״ו:ד).
עד מקום שהשמש דש — the measure of the depth. This measure, taken from the language of the Gemara in נדה, is the measure of how far the bedika penetrates: to the place that relations reach. Its reason: blood found in a place the bedika does not reach is not a sighting that would undo the count, not being in the place that counts; and so the bedika must reach exactly there — not less, and not by a superficial motion, which the Mechaber says outright: ולא שתכניסהו מעט לקנח עצמה(שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:ו).
But the Shulchan Arukh himself sets the limit of the requirement, within the seif: if it is very hard for her, לפחות בדיקה של יום הפסק טהרה ובדיקה של יום ראשון מהשבעה תהיינה עד מקום שהשמש דש(שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:ו) — at least that of the day of the hefsek and that of the first of the seven. And the Rama adds the bedieved: מיהו בדיעבד אם לא עשתה כן כלל רק שבדקה עצמה יפה בחורין ובסדקין בעומק היטב כפי כחה אע״פ שלא הגיע למקום שהשמש דש סגי לה(רמ״א יו״ד קצ״ו:ו). The bedika does have a measure, then, but the measure has a bedieved of its own.
Those who cannot perform the bedika themselves (seifim 7–8):
The case
The din
The reason
The blind woman (סומא)
« הסומא בודקת עצמה ומראה לחבירתה » (שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:ז)
She can feel and insert, but cannot see the shade
Deaf or mute (one of the two only)
הרי הן כפקחות — she performs the bedika herself
Her דעת is whole, to check and to discern
Women of full דעת check them and fix וסתות for them
They do not have the דעת to check and to keep watch
The commentaries on the instrument and on the bedika. On seif 8 the Shach refers to the siman of The Pitchei Teshuva reports the Noda BiYehuda on seif 6 twice: at ס״ק ח, « דאם כואב לה הרבה אינה צריכה בדיקה כלל בשאר ימים חוץ מיום ראשון ויום שביעי » (פת״ש יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק ח), and at ס״ק ט on how far the leniency in the bedika extends. The Taz's commentary does not stop on seifim 6 to 8. The Arukh HaShulchan treats the instrument and the bedikot at his seifim 27 to 30 (ערוך השולחן יו״ד קצ״ו:כ״ז–ל׳). And for practice — ask your rav / your morat kala.
The text of the Mechaber and the Rama (seifim 10–13)
The foundation — seven clean days, whole and consecutive:
Two principles in this part:
• צריך שיהיו רצופים(שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:י) — the seven must be clean and consecutive; any sighting among them סתרה כל הימים(שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:י), even at the close of the seventh day, and she returns to the hefsek and to a count begun afresh.
• The פולטת שכבת זרע is treated as a sighting — semen emitted after relations undoes that day so long as it is ו׳ עונות שלימות(שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:י״א) — six onot, the onah being, per the Shach, ועונה הוא י״ב שעות(ש״ך יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק י״ד) — and that is why, after relations, « אינה מתחלת לספור עד יום ה׳ לשמושה » (שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:י״א).
The Rama's stringency on a ketem in the first three days:
The time
The din of the ketem
Source
The first three days of the count
If she found a ketem —
Afterwards
אבל אח״כ דינו כשאר כתם וכן נוהגין — the ketem follows the ordinary rules of ketamim
The limit the Rama sets himself
The chakira of the פולטת — decree or a real sighting? What is the ground of the פולטת that undoes the count? Is the emitted semen a sighting in the full sense — blood being mixed in it — or is there here a decree, lest she emit without noticing? The nafka mina lies in the very measure of the ו׳ עונות שלימות: the Shulchan Arukh gives the reason — « אין שכבת זרע מסריח עד שיעברו עליו שש עונות שלימות מעת לעת » (שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:י״א) — whence the count from the fifth day, once the six onot have passed.
Two entries in the commentaries do all the work here. The Taz, at ס״ק ה, explains what changes once it has become מסריח: ואחר שהוא מסריח אע״פ שפולטת אותו הרי היא כפולטת מיא בעלמא(ט״ז יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק ה) — it is then no longer an emission that counts; and he gives the measure of the onah: היינו כל עונה היא כשיעור יום או לילה דהיינו י״ב שעות(ט״ז יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק ה). Then, at ס״ק י, he draws the distinction that settles the chakira in one definite direction: דפליטת שכבת זרע אין סותר למפרע כדם אלא דאותן ימים עצמן אינן נחשבים לנקיים(ט״ז יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק י) — the emission does not undo retroactively as blood does; only those days themselves do not count as clean. The Shach gives the same reason for the wait: דעד אותו היום חיישינן לכל יום ויום שמא תפלוט(ש״ך יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק ט״ז). That same Taz refers, in his ס״ק ה, to what he wrote at סימן קצ״ג on בעילת מצוה — and that is where the link between our siman and that one is tied.
ויש אומרים דאין אנו בקיאין בזמן הזה ואין לסמוך על זה — a remark that yields a stringency. The Mechaber, at seif 13, sets out a way of cleaning the semen — תקנח יפה יפה אותו מקום במוך או בבגד להפליט כל הזרע(שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:י״ג), or hot water — and counting from the next day. That is: we are not expert at cleaning it away entirely, and so one does not rely on the cleaning. We are not expert is not a leniency here but a stringency: from the absence of expertise one draws that one must be concerned and wait.
The Shach does not let the comparison the Rama then makes pass. On the words והכי נהוג he objects: לא ידענא מאי ענין זה לזה דהתם לא שייך בקיאות כלל(ש״ך יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק כ״ה) — the two cases do not rest on the same ground, since there expertise is not at issue at all. And yet he himself concludes in the direction of stringency: כיון דהסמ״ק והג״מ כתבו דאין אנו בקיאין אין להקל לכתחלה(ש״ך יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק כ״ה). The underlying question — why non-expertise applies here — is therefore left standing by the Shach, while the din itself does not move.
Nafka mina:
She saw blood at the close of the seventh day — everything is undone; she returns to the hefsek and to the seven days
A ketem in the first three days — one does not treat it leniently as on the other days; but the Rama himself sets two limits, that of כגריס ועוד and that of a מכה known to bleed (רמ״א יו״ד קצ״ו:י).
After relations — she does not begin to count before the fifth day by the Mechaber's text (שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:י״א); and the Rama reports there the custom of waiting one further day — שיש להמתין עוד יום א׳ דהיינו שלא תתחיל למנות עד יום הששי והוא יהיה יום ראשון לספירתה — adding וכן נוהגין בכל מדינות אלו ואין לשנות(רמ״א יו״ד קצ״ו:י״א). One does not rely on the cleaning
She miscounted by one day, immersed and had relations: « צריכה להמתין ששה עונות שלימות ואחר כך תמנה יום אחד נקי ותטבול » (שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:י״ב) — and not the waiting period alone.
Setira by a ketem belongs to the rules of סימן ק״צ; and for practice, a shade or a ketem during the days of the count → a question for a rav, not a private judgement.
And for practice — ask your rav / your morat kala.
The commentaries on setira and on the פולטת. This is where the commentaries are densest. The Taz comments on seifim 10 to 12 in his ס״ק ג to י״א — at ס״ק ג he asks what nafka mina remains today in the rule of consecutive days and answers: דחזקת טומאה עליה עד שיכלו ז׳ רצופין(ט״ז יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק ג). The Shach covers seifim 10 to 13 in his ס״ק י״ב to כ״ה — at ס״ק י״ב: וה״ה ביום הח׳ דלעולם צריכה לישב ז׳ נקיים סמוך לטבילתה(ש״ך יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק י״ב); at ס״ק כ״ב he delimits the five-day wait: היינו מתחלתה ומשום טעמא דש״ז(ש״ך יו״ד קצ״ו ס״ק כ״ב). The Pitchei Teshuva places his ס״ק י to י״ח here, where the Chatam Sofer and the Dagul Merevava are found on the ketem of the first three days and on the פולטת. The Arukh HaShulchan treats this part at his seifim 31 to 42 (ערוך השולחן יו״ד קצ״ו:ל״א–מ״ב). And for practice — ask your rav / your morat kala.
The overall chakira of the siman: what is the root of the bedikot, and what is their measure in each case?
The hefsek tahara — it makes the count possible, and is not a mere establishing of fact; close to בין השמשות, and a מוך דחוק when she saw only one day (machloket Rashba / Ramban, and the Rama's bedieved).
The measure of the bedikot — two a day lechatchila, one bedieved, on the condition the Mechaber states; and no count without a hefsek —
The instrument — worn white linen or cotton, עד מקום שהשמש דש, and examining the shade by daylight.
Consecutive days and setira — a sighting undoes the count even on the seventh day; and the Rama's stringency on a ketem in the first three days, with the limits he sets himself.
The פולטת שכבת זרע — six onot, and the count from the fifth day per the Mechaber, the custom reported by the Rama being to wait one more day; and the Rama's דאין אנו בקיאין בזמן הזה, which tends to stringency — objected to by the Shach in its ground, not in its din.
What follows for practice — each line tied to its source:
The count begins on the following day after the day she stopped, and without a hefsek tahara there is no count
The bedika of the hefsek is made close to בין השמשות; she saw only one day — a מוך דחוק, and bedieved a bedika close to בין השמשות suffices per the Rama, but not the morning one (שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו ורמ״א ס״א–ב).
Checked garment and sheets; and a מנהג כשר of washing and wearing white at the hefsek (שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו ורמ״א ס״ג).
The bedikot of the seven — two a day lechatchila; and the Mechaber himself reports the opinion requiring the first and the seventh day, ואין להקל; the woman who multiplies bedikot is praiseworthy (שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו:ד, ט).
The instrument — worn white linen / cotton, עד מקום שהשמש דש, with the Rama's bedieved (שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו ורמ״א ס״ו).
The seven are consecutive; a sighting undoes the count even on the seventh day; a ketem in the first three days is not treated leniently as the others are
After relations — the Mechaber counts from the fifth day, and the Rama reports the custom of waiting until the sixth, וכן נוהגין בכל מדינות אלו ואין לשנות; and one does not rely on the cleaning (שו״ע יו״ד קצ״ו ורמ״א ס״י״א, י״ג).
