1. The axiom: time does not purify — only the טבילה
The starting point:
The נדה, the זבה and the יולדת do not leave their טומאה without a טבילה: the passage of time, even years, does not purify. As long as she has not immersed כראוי in a מקוה ראוי (a valid mikvé), whoever has relations with her is חייב כרת. And the immersion has a time: the טבילה is done at night (the night of the 8th day) — שלא תטבול האשה ביום, "that the woman not immerse by day". The whole siman comes down to two linked requirements: (a) a טבילה כראוי (without it, no purity), then (b) at the right time — at night, never by day, except in a case of אונס.
| Concept | What it means | Practical consequence |
| אין טהרה אלא בטבילה | Time does not purify; only a טבילה כראוי in a מקוה ראוי removes the טומאה | Without it → חייב כרת, even after years (seif 1) |
| טבילה בלילה | The immersion is done at night (the night of the 8th day), not by day | שלא תטבול ביום (seif 3) |
| סרך בתה | One does not immerse by day, even on the 8th, lest the daughter imitate and immerse on the 7th | The גזרה that closes the day (seif 3) |
💡 The marker: this siman is למעשה — it sets the when of the טבילה: at night (of the 8th day), with the mitzvah not to delay it (husband in town), the קולא of ליל שבת according to local custom, and the cases of אונס. The act of the טבילה is learned from a balanit or a moret kalla, and the exact schedule (ליל שבת, חפיפה, אונס) is settled with a Rav: one does not deduce it alone from a summary.
2. The 3 reflex questions
■ HAS SHE IMMERSED? (אין טהרה אלא בטבילה) — has she truly left her טומאה through a טבילה כראוי in a מקוה ראוי? As long as she has not immersed, even after years, she remains a נדה and whoever has relations with her is חייב כרת (seif 1).
↓ we look at the time
■ WHEN DOES SHE IMMERSE? (at night, never by day) — the טבילה is done at night (the night of the 8th). If the husband is in town, it is a מצוה to immerse בזמנה (פריה ורביה). Forbidden to immerse by day — even on the 8th or 9th — משום סרך בתה; and never on the 7th by day (seif 2-3).
↓ we look at the exceptions
■ IS THERE AN אונס OR A QUESTION? (אונס / כלה / ליל שבת) — is there force majeure (cold, fear of thieves, the city gates) → 8th by day permitted, never the 7th? Is she a כלה (before the חופה, immerses by day)? A question of ליל שבת or חפיפה? These cases are settled with a Rav (seif 2, 4-5).
⚖ The criterion of the time (seif 3-4)
The basic rule: one immerses at night, not by day. Forbidden to immerse on the 7th day by day (she has not yet completed her seven); and even on the 8th or 9th day one does not immerse by day — משום סרך בתה (lest the daughter imitate and immerse on the 7th day itself, not distinguishing that her mother immersed after the seven). In a case of אונס (cold, fear of thieves, the closing of the city gates) → she may immerse on the 8th by day (מבעוד יום); but on the 7th, never by day, even באונס.
3. The master grid: the 5 families of this siman
An absolute must to memorize. Basis: Mehaber and Rama, seifim 1-5, read with the Taz, the Shach, the Sidrei Tahara and contemporary pesika (Taharat haBayit, Shevet haLevi, Badei haShulchan).
| Family | The essential | The marker |
| 1 · No טהרה without טבילה |
נדה / זבה / יולדת do not leave their טומאה without a טבילה, even after years; without a טבילה כראוי in a מקוה ראוי → חייב כרת |
Time does not purify (seif 1) |
| 2 · Immersing בזמנה & ליל שבת |
Husband in town → מצוה to immerse in its time (פריה ורביה); Rama: permitted on ליל שבת if she could not before (and husband in town); otherwise י"א forbidden — per locale; the חפיפה close to the טבילה |
The mitzvah בזמנה and the shabbat leniency (seif 2) |
| 3 · Not by day — סרך בתה |
Forbidden to immerse on the 7th by day; and even on the 8th / 9th, one does not immerse by day — משום סרך בתה (lest the daughter imitate and immerse on the 7th) |
The גזרה that closes the day (seif 3) |
| 4 · Cases of אונס |
Cold, fear of thieves, city gates closed → she may immerse on the 8th by day (מבעוד יום); but on the 7th, never by day, even באונס |
The hierarchy of אונס: 8th yes, 7th no (seif 4) |
| 5 · The בדיעבד — עלתה טבילה |
Immersed on the 8th by day without אונס → עלתה לה טבילה; and even on the 7th by day → עלתה; Rama: nonetheless לא תשמש עד הלילה ותסתיר טבילתה |
The טבילה counts even if done improperly (seif 5) |
📌 Key reading: the five families come down to a single thread — only a טבילה כראוי purifies, and its time is the night. Three nuances frame it: the mitzvah not to delay it (husband in town, with the קולא of ליל שבת per locale), the prohibition of immersing by day (סרך בתה — except באונס on the 8th, never on the 7th), and the בדיעבד (עלתה טבילה, but לא תשמש עד הלילה). The case of the כלות (who immerse by day before the חופה) is the exception of §2/3.
4. The 5 golden rules
- Time does not purify — only the טבילה. נדה / זבה / יולדת leave their טומאה only through a טבילה כראוי in a מקוה ראוי; without it, even after years, whoever has relations with her is חייב כרת (Mehaber seif 1).
- Immerse בזמנה — the night of the 8th — if the husband is in town. It is a מצוה not to nullify פריה ורביה, even for a single night (Mehaber seif 2).
- The קולא of ליל שבת (Rama). Permitted to immerse on ליל שבת if she could not before (and only if the husband is in town); but if she could immerse before → י"א forbidden. Custom per locale; the חפיפה remains close to the טבילה (Rama seif 2).
- Not by day — סרך בתה; except באונס on the 8th. Forbidden to immerse on the 7th by day; and even on the 8th / 9th, not by day. In a case of אונס (cold, thieves, gates) → 8th by day permitted; never the 7th (Mehaber seif 3-4).
- בדיעבד: עלתה טבילה, but לא תשמש עד הלילה. Immersed on the 8th (and even the 7th) by day → the טבילה counts; Rama: nonetheless she does not have relations before night and conceals her טבילה from her husband until night (Mehaber + Rama seif 5).
5. Mnemonic — the "TEVILA" memory aid
"T-E-V-I-L-A" — after the sequence of the siman
- Time: it does not purify — only a טבילה כראוי in a מקוה ראוי (otherwise כרת).
- Early (in its time): מצוה to immerse בזמנה (the night of the 8th) if the husband is in town — פריה ורביה.
- Vendredi / friday night: קולא of ליל שבת (Rama) if she could not before; חפיפה close to the טבילה.
- Interdicted by day: סרך בתה — even on the 8th / 9th one does not immerse by day; never the 7th.
- Legitimate force (אונס): cold, thieves, gates → 8th by day permitted; the 7th never.
- After the fact (בדיעבד): עלתה טבילה even on the 7th/8th by day — but לא תשמש עד הלילה ותסתיר טבילתה.
The ladder of the time (seif 3-5)
- the night of the 8th (husband in town) → לכתחילה, the מצוה בזמנה
- the 8th by day באונס (cold, thieves, gates) → permitted
- the 7th by day → forbidden, even באונס
- the 7th / 8th by day improperly → בדיעבד עלתה, but לא תשמש עד הלילה
6. The 4 classic pitfalls
❌ Pitfall 1 — Believing that "time has passed" suffices: one imagines that after long years a woman "is no longer a נדה". Yet time does not purify: as long as she has not immersed כראוי in a מקוה ראוי, she remains in her טומאה, and whoever has relations with her is חייב כרת (seif 1). Only the טבילה removes it.
❌ Pitfall 2 — Immersing by day "to go faster": the טבילה is done at night. Forbidden to immerse by day — even on the 8th or 9th day — משום סרך בתה (lest the daughter imitate and immerse on the 7th day itself). And on the 7th day, never by day, even with an אונס (seif 3-4). Only the כלות (before the חופה) immerse by day.
❌ Pitfall 3 — Confusing the 7th and the 8th in a case of אונס: in a case of force majeure (cold, fear of thieves, the city gates closed), she may immerse on the 8th day by day (מבעוד יום) — but the 7th remains closed, even באונס (seif 4). The hierarchy is clear: 8th באונס = yes, 7th = never by day.
❌ Pitfall 4 — Believing a טבילה done improperly "must be redone": if she immersed on the 8th (or even the 7th) by day, עלתה לה טבילה — the טבילה counts בדיעבד. But the Rama adds: she does not have relations before night, even on the 8th, and conceals her טבילה from her husband until night (ותסתיר טבילתה), so as not to come to immerse by day (seif 5).
For the halacha le-ma'aseh, consult your Rav, your balanit or your moret kalla.
7. Recap by the 5 families — the 5 seifim
| Family | Seif | The essential |
| 1 · No טהרה without טבילה | 1 | The נדה, the זבה and the יולדת do not leave their טומאה without a טבילה — even after long years. As long as she has not immersed כראוי in a מקוה ראוי (a valid mikvé), whoever has relations with her is חייב כרת. Time does not purify — only the טבילה. |
| 2 · Immersing בזמנה & ליל שבת | 2 | If the husband is in town, it is a מצוה to immerse in its time (the night of the 8th) so as not to nullify פריה ורביה, even for a single night. Rama: permitted to immerse on ליל שבת if she could not before (and only if the husband is in town); but if she could immerse before (childbirth, or husband returned ערב שבת) → י"א forbidden (custom per locale). The חפיפה must be close to the טבילה (אין מרחיקין הטבילה מן החפיפה). |
| 3 · Not by day — סרך בתה | 3 | Forbidden to immerse on the 7th day (by day); and even if she waits until the 8th or 9th day, she does not immerse by day — משום סרך בתה (lest the daughter imitate and immerse on the 7th day itself, not distinguishing that her mother immersed after the seven). Rama: the כלות (brides) who immerse before the חופה may immerse by day (they join the חתן only at night); but after the חופה, their law is like that of other women. |
| 4 · Cases of אונס | 4 | Where there is אונס (cold, fear of thieves, the closing of the city gates…), she may immerse on the 8th day by day (מבעוד יום); but on the 7th day, she does not immerse by day, even with an אונס. |
| 5 · The בדיעבד — עלתה טבילה | 5 | If she immersed on the 8th by day without אונס → עלתה לה טבילה (the טבילה counts); and even on the 7th by day → עלתה לה טבילה. Rama: nonetheless, she does not have relations, even on the 8th, before night, and conceals her טבילה from her husband until night (ותסתיר טבילתה), so as not to come to immerse by day. |
8. Final flashcard
| Question | Reflex answer | Source |
| Does time purify? | No — only a טבילה כראוי in a מקוה ראוי; otherwise חייב כרת, even after years | Mehaber seif 1 |
| When does she immerse? | At night (the night of the 8th) — מצוה בזמנה if the husband is in town (פריה ורביה) | Mehaber seif 2 |
| May she immerse on ליל שבת? | Rama: yes if she could not before and the husband is in town; otherwise י"א forbidden (per locale) | Rama seif 2 |
| Immerse by day on the 8th / 9th? | Forbidden — משום סרך בתה (except a כלה before the חופה) | Mehaber seif 3 |
| And in a case of אונס? | 8th by day permitted (cold, thieves, gates); the 7th never by day, even באונס | Mehaber seif 4 |
| Immersed on the 8th (or the 7th) by day? | עלתה לה טבילה (counts); Rama: לא תשמש עד הלילה ותסתיר טבילתה | Mehaber + Rama seif 5 |
| The חפיפה? | Close to the טבילה — אין מרחיקין הטבילה מן החפיפה | Rama seif 2 |
| A כלה before the wedding? | Immerses by day before the חופה (joins the חתן at night) — under the guidance of a moret kalla | Rama seif 3 |
⚖ The reflex in 3 questions
- Has she immersed? Only a טבילה כראוי in a מקוה ראוי removes the טומאה; without it, even after years, חייב כרת.
- When? At night (of the 8th) — מצוה בזמנה if the husband is in town; not by day (סרך בתה), except באונס on the 8th; never on the 7th by day.
- Is there a question (ליל שבת, חפיפה, אונס, כלה)? It is settled with a Rav, a balanit or a moret kalla.
For the halacha le-ma'aseh, consult your Rav, your balanit or your moret kalla.
