1. The axiom: one follows the language, and language has four shapes

The axiom. The Tur opens the siman with the general rule: all vows follow the language — what the word conveys where it is the Torah’s language, local usage and intention where it is men’s. This siman develops the first branch, and does so by showing four shapes of word, each with a reach of its own.
« כל הנדרים הולכין אחר הלשון אם הוא לשון תורה כפי מה שיצא ממשמעותו ואם לשון בני אדם כפי מה שידברו אנשי המקום ההוא בזמן ההוא ואחר כוונת הנודרים » (טור יורה דעה רט״ז)
1. A demonstrative — “these fruits”, “this house”, “this wine”. It consecrates the object: the prohibition passes to all that comes from it and survives a change of owner.
▼
2. A possessive — “your house”, “my loaf”, “my property”. It describes a relation: it rises and falls with ownership.
▼
3. A verb — “what I eat”, “what I taste”. It bounds the prohibition to the act named — unless the object materially persists in what is eaten.
▼
4. A species name — “olives”, “meat”, “figs”. It designates nothing: no exchanges, no liquids, no taste in a dish.

2. Mechanism A — designation: what it carries

To designate is to treat the thing as הקדש. The Ran says it and the Shakh reports it: the one who designates שווינהו כהקדש. Hence four extensions — exchanges, growths, growths of growths where the seed persists, liquids — and one bound: exchanges of exchanges.
« קונם פירות האלו עלי אסור בחילופיהם ובגידוליהם » (שו״ע יו״ד רט״ז:א)
« אבל חילופי חילופיהן מותרים » (שו״ע יו״ד רט״ז:א)
Three ways to designate, all three effective: by the demonstrative (“these fruits”); by presence (“they were before him and he said: they are קונם to me”); by owner or place (“so-and-so’s fruits”, “those of such a place”). The Rama’s gloss lays down the third, seif 11 confirms it.
« וכן הדין אם לא אמר האלו אלא היו לפניו ואמר קונם הם עלי » (שו״ע יו״ד רט״ז:א)
« הגה וכן אם אמר פירות פלוני או מקום פלוני הם קונם עלי הוי כאילו אמר פירות אלו » (רמ״א יו״ד רט״ז:א)
The bound, and it is crucial. Naming a species — “figs are קונם to me” — is not designating. The Shakh, at ס״ק ד: one who forbade a whole species לא עשאם עליו כהקדש, so nothing passes to the exchanges. The Taz specifies, however, that the growths remain forbidden, being themselves fruits of that species.
« כלומר של איש פלוני אבל אם אמר פירות של מין פלוני כלומר קונם תאנים או ענבים עלי כיון שלא פרט ואסר עליו כל המין לא עשאם עליו כהקדש שלא נתכוין אלא מאכילת אותו המין ומ״ה לא מיתסר בחילופיהן ובגידוליהן » (ש״ך יו״ד רט״ז ס״ק ד)

3. Mechanism B — the verb: what it bounds

A verb bounds the prohibition to the act it names. The Taz says it in a line, at ס״ק ה: eating the exchange or the growth, he does not taste those fruits — and that alone is what he forbade.
« דכי אכיל חילופיהן וגידוליהן לא טעים הנהו פירות דאסר עליה והוא אמר שאני טועם » (ט״ז יו״ד רט״ז ס״ק ה)
« אמר קונם מה שאני אוכל או טועם מהם אם הוא דבר שזרעו כלה כגון חטים וכיוצא בהם מותר בחילופיהם ובגידוליהם » (שו״ע יו״ד רט״ז:ב)
Pitfall. The verb does not release everything. The liquids issuing from those fruits stay forbidden even in this formula, and the growths become forbidden again as soon as the seed persists. The verb bounds the act; it does not erase the matter.
« וכן משקים היוצאים מהם אסורים » (שו״ע יו״ד רט״ז:ב)

4. Mechanism C — material persistence:

The criterion is physical. Sown wheat perishes in the soil: the plant that grows is no longer it. A planted onion persists: what grows still contains it. Hence a simple rule — what persists transmits the prohibition one degree further, what has perished does not.
Designation — “these fruits”Exchanges and growths forbidden; growths of growths permittedAll forbidden, down to growths of growths
Verb — “what I eat of them”Exchanges and growths permittedEven growths of growths forbidden
Liquids issuing from the fruitsForbidden in both formulasForbidden in both formulas
⚠️ On the liquids the Rambam does not agree with the Shulchan Arukh: he writes משקין היוצאין מהן ספק, and infers that there is no flogging. The table’s row follows the Shulchan Arukh.
« וּבֵין כָּךְ וּבֵין כָּךְ מַשְׁקִין הַיּוֹצְאִין מֵהֶן סָפֵק. לְפִיכָךְ אִם שָׁתָה מֵהֶן אֵינוֹ לוֹקֶה » (רמב״ם הלכות נדרים פרק ה׳ הלכה י״ד)
And the reason the growths are not nullified though they exceed the original: the vow can always be released, so it is a דבר שיש לו מתירין, not nullified in its own kind. This is also the rule of seif 10.
« מפני שיש לו להשאיל על נדרו נעשה כדבר שיש לו מתירין שאינו בטל במינו » (שו״ע יו״ד רט״ז:י)

5. Mechanism D — possessive against demonstrative, in property

Seifim 4 to 8 set the two mechanisms against each other on the same object, and the result crosses exactly. The possessive rises and falls with ownership; the demonstrative lives and dies with the thing.
The formula, and who says itSold, given, or the owner diesFallen, then rebuiltSeif
“your house” — said by the one enteringPermittedForbidden — even elsewhereד
“this house” — said by the one enteringForbidden foreverPermitted — even identicallyה
“this house of yours” — both at onceForbidden (1st view) · permitted (2nd) · forbidden (3rd)Forbidden (1st) · forbidden (2nd) · permitted (3rd)ו
“this house” — said by the ownerForbidden — it remains in its prohibitionPermitted, per the Shakh at ס״ק י״חז
“my house” — said by the ownerPermittedForbidden, per the Shakh at ס״ק כז
“my property is forbidden to you” — to the sonHe inherits—ז
“…both in my life and after my death”He does not inherit—ז
“my loaf is forbidden to you”Permitted if it reaches him after ownership ceased—ח
« שהאוסר דבר שהוא שלו על חבירו אע״פ שיצא מרשותו הרי הוא באיסורו עומד » (שו״ע יו״ד רט״ז:ז)
« מת ונפלו לו בירושה או שנתנה לאחר והוא נתנה לו מותרת לו שלא אמר אלא ככרי ועתה אינו שלו » (שו״ע יו״ד רט״ז:ח)

6. Mechanism E — taste, mixture and name

The last four seifim pose a new question: does the vow reach what has only the taste of the thing? The answer follows exactly the same dividing line. A species name does not reach the taste; a demonstrative or a verb does.
What was saidA dish having its tasteSeif
“meat and wine are קונם to me”Permitted — by defaultט
“the meat and wine I taste”Forbiddenט
“this meat, this wine”Forbiddenט
“so-and-so’s wine”, “that of such a place”Forbidden — like “this wine”י״א
“olives and grapes are קונם to me”Oil and wine permitted, even newי״ב
“these olives” or “the olives I taste”Liquids and taste in a dish forbiddenי״ב
This wine fallen into other wineAll forbidden, even a drop —
This wine fallen into vinegarNullified — not its kind (Taz
The vowed wine, turned to vinegar after the vowForbiddenי״א
What was already vinegar at the time of the vowPermitted — it is wine he forbade himself
Pitfall. The default of seif 9 is reversible. The Shakh, at ס״ק כ״ה: if the taste of meat or wine distresses him, we follow his intention and the taste becomes forbidden. In other words, the “permitted” row of the table is not a conclusion but a presumption.

7. Master table — the twelve seifim in the order of the book

The six preceding sections arrange the material by mechanism; this one restores it to the order of the Shulchan Arukh, clause after clause, so that a seif can be found.

SeifThe clause of the Shulchan ArukhWhat it says

ט« ואם אמר קונם בשר ויין שאני טועם או שאני אוכל או שאמר קונם בשר או יין זה עלי אסור בתבשיל שיש בו טעם [בשר או] יין » (שו״ע יו״ד רט״ז:ט)and if he said: קונם, the meat and wine that I taste, or that I eat — or if he said: קונם, this meat or this wine is [forbidden] to me — he is forbidden a dish containing the taste of [meat or] wine

י« מפני שיש לו להשאיל על נדרו נעשה כדבר שיש לו מתירין שאינו בטל במינו » (שו״ע יו״ד רט״ז:י)because he can seek release from his vow, it becomes like a thing that has means of being permitted, which is not nullified in its own kind
יא« האוסר על עצמו יינו של פלוני או של מקום פלוני דינו כדין האוסר על עצמו יין זה שאסור בתבשיל שנפל בו ויש בו טעם יין » (שו״ע יו״ד רט״ז:יא)One who forbids himself so-and-so’s wine, or that of such a place, has the same law as one who forbids himself “this wine”: he is forbidden a dish into which it fell and which has the taste of wine
יא« והוא הדין אם אותו יין נעשה חומץ אחר הנדר שהוא אסור עליו » (שו״ע יו״ד רט״ז:יא)and the same if that wine became vinegar after the vow: it is forbidden to him
יא« אבל מה שהיה חומץ בשעת הנדר מותר » (שו״ע יו״ד רט״ז:יא)but what was already vinegar at the time of the vow is permitted
יא« דיין אסר עליו ולא חומץ) (ב״י בשם תשובת הרשב״א » (שו״ע יו״ד רט״ז:יא)(for it is wine he forbade himself, and not vinegar) (Beit Yosef in the name of a responsum of the Rashba)
יב« אמר קונם זיתים וענבים עלי מותר בשמן ויין היוצא מהם » (שו״ע יו״ד רט״ז:יב)He said: קונם, olives and grapes are [forbidden] to me — he is permitted the oil and wine that come from them
יב« אפי׳ הוא חדש » (שו״ע יו״ד רט״ז:יב)even if it is new
יב« ואם אמר קונם זיתים וענבים שאני טועם או שאמר קונם זיתים אלו עלי אסור אף במשקים היוצאים מהם ובתבשיל שנותנין בהם טעם » (שו״ע יו״ד רט״ז:יב)and if he said: קונם, the olives and grapes that I taste — or: קונם, these olives are [forbidden] to me — he is forbidden even the liquids that issue from them and a dish to which they impart taste

9. The vocabulary of the siman

TermMeaning
The two branches of the Tur’s rule. This siman develops the first, siman 217 the second
Their exchanges — what a third party gave in return
Their growths, and the second degree
A thing whose seed perishes in the soil — wheat; the opposite: garlic, onion
What can be made permitted, and so is not nullified in its kind
He made them as consecrated — the effect of designation, per the Ran
The first and last term of a double formula — the doubt of seif 6
We follow the name, not the taste — the Shakh at ס״ק כ״ז
The wife’s handiwork — seif 3, and Rabbenu Yona’s apportionment
Imparting taste — the question of seifim 9, 11 and 12
The father’s house: per the Rama, all his descendants — and the Shakh’s reservation
The specification that carries the prohibition past death — the Taz’s long note

10. Golden rules, mnemonic and classic pitfalls

This · yours · that I eat · olives. Four words, four reaches. This consecrates and travels. Yours follows ownership. That I eat bounds the act. Olives designates nothing.
Golden rules. (1) The formula decides before the intention — but a declared intention can overturn a default (Shakh ס״ק כ״ה). (2) What materially persists transmits the prohibition one degree. (3) What can be released does not dilute. (4) The moment the word is said fixes what it covers (seif 11). (5) When two terms contradict and are separable, both stringencies are kept; when grammatically interdependent, one is principal (Taz ס״ק ח).
Classic pitfalls. (1) Confusing naming a species with designating an object — that is the whole difference between seif 1 and seif 12. (2) Thinking the verb releases everything: liquids stay forbidden, and growths become forbidden again if the seed persists. (3) Treating “your house” and “this house” as equivalent: they cross exactly. (4) Taking the “permitted” row of seif 9 for a conclusion: it is a presumption the Shakh overturns. (5) Forgetting that seif 10 holds only within the same kind — in vinegar the rule ceases.
All the above is a study summary. Actual conduct — what words were said, which term is principal, and what local usage makes of them — belongs to the Rav.
