✦ ❖ ✦
After the laws of the blessing on wine, the Choulhan Aroukh treats here what breaks the meal. The pivot is the שינוי מקום: changing house is as finishing the meal (bless retroactively, then repeat the המוציא), but a move from corner to corner (מפנה לפנה) within one house breaks nothing. The siman also settles the diners who step out, the intention (the trees of the garden), the place of the ברכת המזון, the שבעת המינים, and what is not a hefsek. Hebrew text, fluent English translation and explanation of the ז seifim, with a section of practical cases.

The principle of the siman: a blessing "fixes" the meal to a place and an intention. What breaks that fixation is a hefsek and requires re-blessing. The central case is the שינוי מקום — and here the Mechaber and the Rama differ: for the Mechaber, changing place is as finishing the meal (הרי פסק אכילתו); for the Rama, it is only a היסח הדעת — one blesses only in advance, never on the past, and not at all for bread. Around this core: the diners who stepped out, the intention (the garden), the place of the ברכת המזון, the שבעת המינים, and what is not a hefsek. We study here the principle; for conduct, one refers to the ruling of the Rav.

1-3.Practical cases and comprehension questions
A. שינוי מקום — the change of place
שִׁינּוּי מָקוֹם — changing place during the meal. A blessing "fixes" the meal to the spot where it was recited; leaving that spot for another may be as finishing the meal (פסק אכילתו) and require re-blessing. It all depends on the extent of the move: from one house to another (בית לבית) — yes; from corner to corner in one house (מפנה לפנה) — no.
Seif 1 — היה אוכל בבית זה ופסק סעודתו : going to another house
Seif 1: one who was eating in this house and interrupted his meal and went to another house — or who was eating and whose friend called him to speak with him, and who stepped out to the doorway of his house and returned — since he changed his place, he must bless retroactively on what he ate, then return and first recite the המוציא, and afterward finish his meal. But if he spoke with him inside the house, though he changed his place from corner to corner, he need not bless. (And see later siman רע״ג: if he intended to eat in another place it is not called a change of place, provided the two places are in one house; and see siman קפ״ד.)
Changing house breaks the meal. The שינוי מקום breaks the fixation (קביעות): moving to another house — or even stepping out to the doorway and returning — requires blessing retroactively on what one ate, then repeating the המוציא. But a move corner to corner within the same house (מפנה לפנה) breaks nothing: the house is one "place".
B. חברים שיצאו — the diners who stepped out, and the Mechaber/Rama dispute
Seif 2 — הניחו שם מקצתן : what breaks (and what does not break) the fixation
Seif 2: diners seated to eat who stepped out to greet a bridegroom or a bride — if they left part of the group in place, they return to their place and finish their meal without blessing a second time; but if they left no one, on stepping out they bless retroactively and on returning bless anew. Likewise if they were seated to drink or to eat fruit — for every change of place is as finishing the meal One who changes place corner to corner in one house need not re-bless. One who ate on the east side of this fig tree and comes to eat on the west must bless. Rama's gloss: and some dispute all that is written in this siman and hold that a change of place is only a diversion of attention (היסח הדעת); so he blesses only on what he wishes to eat, but not on what he has already eaten (Tossafot, Rachbam, Rosh, Mordechai, Tur) — and only where he left no diners and ate things not requiring a blessing in place; but if he left part of the diners, or even not but ate things that require a blessing in place, he need not bless even on what he wishes to eat afterward (Semak, Or Zarua). So one who interrupted his meal and went to another house, or whom a friend called, to the doorway or elsewhere — on returning he need not bless at all, for bread requires its blessing in place by all views; however if he diverted his attention on returning, he must bless on what he wishes to eat (Beit Yossef, Rashba). And there is no difference between returning to the place where he already ate and finishing his meal elsewhere (Rambam, Ran); so is the custom in these lands. In any case, a priori one should not leave his place without blessing, lest he forget to return and eat (Rabbenu Manoah, Ran); but for a passing mitzvah need, such as the arrival of the time of prayer, it is permitted (Kol Bo; and see siman קפ״ד).
The heart of the siman — a dispute. For the Mechaber, every change of place is as finishing the meal: one blesses retroactively, then repeats the המוציא. For the Rama, it is only a היסח הדעת: one blesses only in advance (never on the past), and not at all when part of the diners were left or when one ate bread (which requires its blessing in place). The custom (כן נוהגין) follows the Rama, but a priori one does not leave his place without blessing.
Seif 3 — the trees of the garden: when intention covers the other trees
Seif 3: some say that if he was in a garden and wished to eat from the fruit of each tree — once he blessed on one tree, he need not bless on the others, provided that at the time of the blessing he intended to eat from those others. But from garden to garden he must bless, even if they are adjacent, and even if, when he first blessed, he had all of them in mind.
Intention (דעת) and place. Within a single garden, an initial intention covers all the trees — no new blessing. But moving from one garden to another is a change of place: one re-blesses, even if adjacent, for intention does not override the change of place.
D. מקום ברכת המזון — the place of the Birkat haMazon
Seif 4 — travelers: blessing where one finishes
Seif 4: if he ate bread in one place and then ate in another, he recites the Birkat haMazon only at the second place — as travelers do, who eat as they walk and sit to bless at the place where they finish their meal.
The place of the Birkat haMazon. When one eats in several places (a traveler on the road), one recites the Birkat haMazon where one finishes: the last place "gathers" the whole meal.
E. שבעת המינים — what requires its blessing in place
Seif 5 — requiring their blessing in place: the seven species
Seif 5: some say that the שבעת המינים (the seven species) require their after-blessing in place; and some say, only grain products. Rama's gloss: and some say, bread alone (Beit Yossef siman קפ״ד in the name of the Rashba, and Haggahot Maimoni ch. 4).
"Requiring a blessing in place" (טעונים ברכה במקומם). Certain foods — the seven species, or only grain, or only bread — require their after-blessing at the place where they were eaten; one cannot discharge it elsewhere. That is why, for bread, a change of place does not require re-blessing on returning: one must in any case return to bless in place.
F. מה שאינו הפסק — what does not interrupt
Seif 6 — recalling one has not prayed: interrupting to pray
Seif 6: one who recalls during the meal that he has not prayed and rose and prayed — even if there is no time to finish his meal and to pray, so that he is obliged to interrupt and cannot eat until he prays — with all this, it is not a hefsek.
An imposed interruption is not a hefsek. Having to rise to pray in the middle of the meal — a forced diversion, for a mitzvah — is not judged a true interruption: on returning, one resumes the meal without re-blessing.
Seif 7 — a short nap and relieving oneself
Seif 7: a man who dozed during his meal a short nap (שינת עראי) — it is not a hefsek. Rama's gloss: and likewise if he interrupted for other optional acts, such as needing to relieve himself, and the like.
A short nap and relieving oneself. A brief doze, or stepping out for one's needs, are minor and "optional" interruptions (דברי רשות) that do not break the meal — one resumes without a new blessing.
The siman in one sentence: what interrupts the meal is above all the שינוי מקום (changing house) — for the Mechaber one blesses retroactively then repeats the המוציא, for the Rama it is only a היסח הדעת (one blesses only in advance, and not at all for bread). What does not break the fixation: the מפנה לפנה within one house, having left part of the diners, a prior intention (the trees of the garden); the ברכת המזון is said where one finishes (הולכי דרכים), the שבעת המינים require their blessing in place, and תפילה, שינת עראי and relieving oneself are not interruptions.
Practical cases
Case 1 — Stepping out of the house in the middle of the meal
Situation: in the midst of a bread meal, I step out to another house (or to the doorway) and return. Must I re-bless?
Conduct: for the Mechaber, yes — the change of place breaks the meal (seif 1). For the Rama, the accepted custom, since one ate bread (which requires its blessing in place) — one does not re-bless on returning, unless one diverted one's attention (seif 2). A priori, one does not leave one's place without blessing. In practice, one follows one's Rav.
Case 2 — Snacking on fruit from tree to tree
Situation: in a garden I blessed borei peri ha'etz on one tree, intending to eat from the others. Must I re-bless on each tree?
Conduct: no — within a single garden the initial intention covers all the trees (seif 3). But on moving to another garden one re-blesses, even if adjacent. For borderline cases, one refers to one's Rav.
Case 3 — Dozing or having to pray during the meal
Situation: I doze off for a moment, or rise to pray Mincha in the middle of the meal. Is that an interruption?
Conduct: no — a short nap (shinat aray), a natural need, or rising to pray are not interruptions (seifim 6-7): one resumes the meal without re-blessing. In practice, one follows one's Rav.
Comprehension questions
Check your understanding:
Why does moving from one house to another require blessing, whereas corner to corner does not (seif 1)?
How do the Mechaber and the Rama differ on the change of place, and what does having eaten bread change (seif 2)?
How does intention cover the trees of one garden, and why not from garden to garden (seif 3)?
Where does one recite the Birkat haMazon when one has eaten in several places (seif 4)?
Why are prayer and a short nap not interruptions (seifim 6-7)?
