Siman ר״ד · The blessing over the remaining foods

דיני הברכות ליתר מאכלים — the long list of שהכל (Seif 1), wine that turns and vinegar (ריחיה חלא וטעמיה חמרא, Seifim 2-4), lees and תמד (Seifim 5-6), water drunk without thirst, remedy and compulsion (Seifim 7-9), honey, preserves and the rule of עיקר וטפל (Seifim 10-13)

✦ ❖ ✦

The preceding simanim gave the specific blessings: bread, wine, fruits of the tree, fruits of the ground. This one gathers everything else — and discovers that “everything else” is no dumping ground: it is ordered territory with borders of its own. Thirteen seifim, and one question running through them all: is there enjoyment here, and where does it come from? Hebrew text, English translation and explanation of the י״ג seifim, with a section of practical cases.

People often take שהכל to be the blessing for whatever has none of its own — a default box. This siman shows the opposite. It opens with the Mishna, ועל דבר שאין גדולו מן הארץ אומר שהכל נהיה בדברו (ברכות מ׳ ע״ב), and then unrolls what looks like a market inventory: meat, eggs, salt, mushrooms, palm heart, beer, dill, watered vinegar. Yet four distinct reasons hide inside it — what does not grow from the earth, what has spoilt, what the tree was not planted for, and what is there only for flavour. Then the siman leaves lists behind and asks: when does wine stop being wine, when does a liquid remain wine, when is there nothing at all to bless, and finally which of two mixed foods rules. We study here at the level of principle; for personal practice one follows one's Rav.

📑 Plan of the study

A. שהכל (Seif 1) — four families in a single list
(Seifim 2-4) — three states of wine, three rulings
C. שמרים ותמד (Seifim 5-6) — measuring the wine that is left
(Seifim 7-9) — enjoyment, compulsion and danger
(Seifim 10-13) — who rules, and what to do in doubt
1-4. Practical cases and comprehension questions

A. שהכל — the domain of the general blessing (Seif 1)

Seif 1: over anything whose growth is not from the earth — such as the meat of cattle, wild animals and fowl, fish, eggs, milk and cheese; over mouldy bread; over a cooked dish whose form has changed and which has spoilt; over novlot, which are dates that the heat has cooked, scorched and dried out; over the locust; over salt; over brine; over broth; over truffles and mushrooms; over the kora — [that is] the soft growth added to the tree each year, which they call palmito [Tur]; over young vine shoots; over sweet almonds eaten while soft, in their husks; over ḥaziz, that is young standing grain; over raw gourd; over barley flour; over date beer and barley beer; over the barley water cooked for a sick person; over wild herbs that are not sown; over dill, which they call anito [that is, anise]; over cumin and coriander [for they are made for flavour and not for eating]; and over vinegar mixed with water until it is fit to drink — one blesses shehakol.
The governing rule: the Mishna states ועל דבר שאין גדולו מן הארץ אומר שהכל נהיה בדברו (ברכות מ׳ ע״ב), and the baraita illustrates it — על דבר שאין גדולו מן הארץ כגון בשר בהמות חיות ועופות ודגים אומר שהכל נהיה בדברו (ברכות מ׳ ע״ב). The Rambam restates it: This siman is the siman of that blessing.
What counts is not growing in the earth but drawing from it: truffles and mushrooms do come up out of the ground, yet the Gemara lists them here — מירבא רבו מארעא מינק לא ינקי מארעא (ברכות מ׳ ע״ב). summary: they grow from the earth but do not feed from it, and the Gemara even amends the Mishna's wording accordingly.
A second family: what has lost its standing — mouldy bread, a dish whose form has changed, dates scorched by the heat. These do grow from the earth, but they have dropped a rung. The Mishna Berura draws the line: ונתקלקל קצת עי״ז דאלו נתקלקל לגמרי ולא חזי לאכילת אדם אין מברכין עליו כלל (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:א). summary: spoilt somewhat — down to shehakol; spoilt entirely — no blessing at all.
A third family: what the tree was not planted for — palm heart, vine shoots, sweet almonds eaten soft. The Gemara debated it — קורא רב יהודה אמר בורא פרי האדמה ושמואל אמר שהכל נהיה בדברו (ברכות ל״ו ע״א) — and ruled ואף על גב דקלסיה שמואל לרב יהודה הלכתא כוותיה דשמואל (ברכות ל״ו ע״א). summary: what grows on the tree without being what the tree was planted for does not rank as fruit.
A fourth family: what is made for flavour, not for eating — cumin, coriander, dill: And still one blesses, for the thread running through the whole siman is enjoyment — כיון דאית ליה הנאה מיניה בעי ברוכי (ברכות ל״ו ע״א). The Mishna Berura says as much of salt:
Two clarifications from the Mishna Berura: the broth of our seif is של בשר דאלו של פירות וירקות תליא בפלוגתא (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:ו); and ḥaziz is תבואה שלא הביאה שליש וחזי לאכילה ומשום דלא גמר פירא נחית חד דרגא מפה״א לשהכל (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:יג). summary: produce of the earth that has not finished ripening drops one rung, from borei pri ha'adama to shehakol.

B. חומץ ויין שהחמיץ — when wine stops being wine (Seifim 2-4)

Seif 2 —

Seif 2: over neat vinegar one blesses nothing at all, because it harms him.
The Tur had already set it in one sentence with diluted vinegar:
Not every vinegar: the Mishna Berura narrows the seif — ודוקא בחומץ חזק שנתחמץ כ״כ שמבעבע כשמשליכין אותו על הארץ אבל בחומץ שאינו חזק כ״כ ודאי אית ליה הנאה מיניה ובעי ברוכי (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:כד). summary: ordinary table vinegar is not what is meant here.
The principle taking shape: the blessing follows enjoyment, not substance. The Rambam made it a general rule: וכן אכלין שאין ראויין לאכילה ומשקין שאינן ראויין לשתיה אינן טעונין ברכה לא לפניהן ולא לאחריהן (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ח׳ הלכה ז׳). summary: between seif 1 and seif 2 the very same vinegar moves from shehakol to nothing at all — the added water made the difference, because it made enjoyment possible.

Seif 3 —

Seif 3: if its smell is that of vinegar [i.e. vinegar] and its taste that of wine — it is wine, and one blesses over it borei peri hagefen.
Its source is in Bava Batra: וכל ריחיה חלא וטעמיה חמרא חמרא (בבא בתרא צ״ו ע״א), and the Tur writes the same — אבל אם ריחיה חלא וטעמיה חמרא חמרא הוא (טור או״ח סימן ר״ד).
Why smell does not decide: the Mishna Berura opens seifim 3 and 4 together — סעיף זה וסעיף ד׳ באו לבאר אודות יין שהתחיל להתקלקל ומטבעו שמתחלה מתקלקל ריחו ואח״כ טעמו (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:כה). summary: the smell turns first; trusting it would condemn a wine that is still wine.

Seif 4: whatever people refrain from drinking because of its sourness — one does not bless borei peri hagefen over it [but shehakol].
The Beit Yosef brings it in the name of Shibolei haLeket:
The middle state: the Mishna Berura describes it — היינו בשלא נעשה עדיין טעמיה חלא גמורה רק שהתחיל טעמיה להתחמץ קצת עד שבני אדם נמנעין לשתותו מפני זה ברכתו שהכל (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:כו). summary: three states, three treatments — wine (borei peri hagefen), wine beginning to turn (shehakol), and strong vinegar drunk neat (no blessing at all).
The measure is common usage, not personal taste: the seif says כל שבני אדם נמנעים לשתותו. summary: it is not one drinker's distaste that removes the wine blessing but the practice of people at large — the same measure as seif 1, which judged by what people plant and what people eat.

C. שמרים ותמד — how much wine is left in what is drawn out (Seifim 5-6)

Seif 5 —

Seif 5: over wine lees one blesses borei peri hagefen. If he put water in: if he poured three measures of water and found four, it is like diluted wine and he blesses borei peri hagefen; if he found less, even though it has a taste of wine, it is mere sourness and he blesses only shehakol. And that is with their wines, which were strong; but our wines, which are not that strong — even if he poured three and four came out, he does not bless borei peri hagefen. And it appears that one measures by the dilution customary in that place. Gloss: provided the wine is not one part in six of the water, for then it is certainly nullified [Agur].
Lees on their own: The Mishna Berura specifies the case — היינו בשלא נתן עליהם מים אלא שתה אותם גופא ומפני שיש בהם לחלוחית יין מברך בפה״ג (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:כז). The baraita and its conclusion are in Bava Batra: אחד שכר תמרים ואחד שכר שעורים ואחד שמרי יין מברכין עליהם שהכל נהיה בדברו (בבא בתרא צ״ו ע״ב), and רבה ורב יוסף דאמרי תרוייהו אין הלכה כאחרים (בבא בתרא צ״ו ע״ב).
The measure of three in, four out: It comes from Rava — אמר רבא דכולי עלמא רמא תלתא ואתא ארבעה חמרא הוא (בבא בתרא צ״ו ע״ב) — and the Rambam fixes it: שמרים שנתן עליהם שלשה והוציא מהן ארבעה מברך עליהן בורא פרי הגפן שזה יין מזוג הוא (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ח׳ הלכה ט׳). summary: if a fourth measure came out, a full measure of wine was left in the lees; what stands before him is wine diluted by a third.
And if the measure is not met: The Mishna Berura explains why taste is not enough here: אפילו יש בו טעם יין ואף דבעלמא קי״ל טעם כעיקר דאורייתא הכא לא חשיב טעם דכקיוהא בעלמא דמי (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:לג). summary: elsewhere taste counts as substance; here that taste is not wine but its sourness.
The Meḥaber moves the measure from his own age to ours: אבל יינות שלנו שאינן חזקי׳ כל כך אפי׳ רמא תלתא ואתא ארבעה אינו מברך עליו בורא פרי הגפן (שו״ע או״ח ר״ד:ה), concluding ונראה שמשערים בשיעור שמוזגים יין שבאותו מקום (שו״ע או״ח ר״ד:ה). summary: the Gemara's figure assumed strong wines; what is fixed is the principle — what people here call diluted wine — not the number.
The gloss adds a floor: The Mishna Berura notes that these words concern wine itself, not lees:

Seif 6: the temed made from grape husks, upon which water is poured — its law is that of lees. And this is when they were pressed with a beam; but if they were only trodden by foot, even if he poured three measures of water and found only three or less, one blesses borei peri hagefen over it, for it is wine: the water is absorbed into the skins, and what comes out contains much wine. Gloss: husks upon which figs were placed to strengthen the wine — although the husks are the majority, all the strength of the figs is nonetheless in the liquid, and one should not bless borei peri hagefen [Beit Yosef in the name of the Tashbetz].
What temed is: the Mishna Berura defines it — היינו לאחר שנסחט היין מהענבים נותנים מים על החרצנים לקלוט טעם היין שנשאר בהם וזהו הנקרא תמד (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:לד). The Meḥaber begins by aligning it with lees:
Then he reverses the rule: אבל אם לא נדרכו אלא ברגל אפי׳ נתן שלשה מדות מים ולא מצא אלא ג׳ או פחות מברכין עליו בפה״ג שיין הוא והמים נבלעים בזגים ובמה שיוצא יש בו יין מרובה (שו״ע או״ח ר״ד:ו), and the Mishna Berura explains why the beam changes everything: ועי״ז יצא מהענבים כמעט כל הלחלוחית שבהם (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:לה). summary: under the beam almost nothing is left; trodden by foot the skins keep wine — and the water that seems to be missing has not vanished, the skins drank it.
The gloss and the figs: The Mishna Berura gives the reckoning: דהתאנים היה בהם כל כחם שלא נתמצו מקודם והזגים אע״פ שהם הרוב הרי יצא מהם כבר עיקר הלחלוחית (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:לח), and concludes אלא שהכל דהוי כשכר תאנים דברכתו שהכל (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:לט). summary: majority in bulk is not majority in strength — the husks have already been emptied, the figs are intact.

D. מים, רפואה ואונס — the blessing follows enjoyment (Seifim 7-9)

Seif 7 —

Seif 7: one who drinks water for his thirst blesses shehakol, and afterwards borei nefashot; but if a morsel is stuck in his throat and he drinks water to wash it down, he blesses neither before nor after.
The Mishna is its source — השותה מים לצמאו מברך שהכל נהיה בדברו (ברכות מ״ד ע״א) — and on the closing blessing the Gemara concludes פוק חזי מאי עמא דבר (ברכות מ״ה ע״א).
What the words “for his thirst” exclude: the Gemara asks — לאפוקי מאי אמר רב אידי בר אבין לאפוקי למאן (ברכות מ״ד ע״ב) — and answers: one with a morsel stuck in his throat. The Rambam makes it a rule: והשותה מים שלא לרוות צמאו אינו טעון ברכה לא לפניו ולא לאחריו (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ח׳ הלכה א׳). summary: water drunk without thirst gives no enjoyment, and with no enjoyment there is nothing to bless.
Two decisive clarifications: on one hand the Mishna Berura broadens — נראה דלאו דוקא לצמאו ממש אלא בסתמא כל שהחיך נהנה מהמים מסתמא הוא צמא קצת וצריך לברכה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:מ); on the other it confines the exemption to water alone — דוקא מים שאין החיך נהנה מהם כ״א כששותה לצמאו (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:מב). summary: one who swallows bread or another drink to clear what is stuck does bless, because his palate enjoys it.

Seif 8 —

Seif 8: all foods and drinks that a person eats or drinks as a remedy — if their taste is good and the palate enjoys them, he blesses over them before and after. Gloss: if he was forced to eat or drink, although his palate enjoys it, he does not bless over it, since he was compelled. (Beit Yosef in the name of Ohel Moed and the Ra'ah)
The Gemara had already settled it regarding oil drunk for the throat:
Appetite is not enjoyment: the Mishna Berura says it precisely — אע״פ שאינו תאב להם כלל ואינו אוכלם אלא מחמת אונס חליו כיון שעכ״פ החיך נהנה מהם (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:מג). summary: it is not about wanting to eat but about tasting something good; a remedy that tastes bad requires no blessing at all.
The gloss adds compulsion: The Mishna Berura marks the difference from the next seif: שאני התם דהאונס אינו על האכילה גופא משא״כ הכא שהאכילה גופא הוא ע״י אונס (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:מה), noting that several Aḥaronim disagree.
The link with seif 7: the Tur had already tied them together in the name of the Ri — ופי׳ ר״י דוקא ששותה מים לרפואה אינו מברך עליהם לפי שאינו נהנה מן המים אבל שאר משקין נהנה בשתייתן ובטעמם (טור או״ח סימן ר״ד). summary: water alone gives no enjoyment apart from thirst; every other drink keeps its taste even when swallowed as medicine.

Seif 9: if he ate a forbidden food or drink because of danger, he blesses over it before and after.
The Mishna Berura gives the example — כגון חולה שצריך לאכול מאכלות אסורות לרפואתו (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:מו).
Why this is not the case of siman 196: the Mishna Berura says — דכיון דסכנתא הוא התירא קאכיל ואדרבה מצוה קעביד להציל נפשו ואין זה בכלל שאר דבר איסור דקי״ל לעיל בסימן קצ״ו שאין מברכין עליו (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:מז). summary: one who eats because of danger is not eating something forbidden — he eats what is permitted, and he even fulfils a duty.
The Beit Yosef sees a point of agreement here: And the Mishna Berura sets the limit:

E. דבש, מרקחת, עיקר וטפל וספק — who rules in the mixture (Seifim 10-13)

Seif 10 —

Seif 10: bee honey is like any other honey, and one blesses over it only shehakol.
The Beit Yosef places it in the siman's first family: דבש דבורים מברך עליו שהכל פשוט הוא לפי שהוא בכלל דבר שאין גידולו מן הארץ (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״ד), and the Mishna Berura repeats that reason: דהוא בכלל דבר שאין גידולו מן הארץ (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:מט).
The obvious objection and its answer: the bee draws everything from the nectar of flowers. The Mishna Berura answers in the name of the Baḥ: דאע״ג דהדבורים מכניסין מי פירות לתוך גופן ומוצצין מהן ועי״ז נעשה הדבש מ״מ אין טעם הפירות נרגש כלל בהדבש (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:נ). summary: honey does not carry the taste of the fruit it came from — the raw material does not follow it all the way into the blessing.
Why this seif stands here: it says almost nothing new — the Rambam had already listed honey among what does not grow from the earth, But it is the threshold of the last three seifim: the honey just declared שהכל will, in the very next seif, step aside before the fruit it preserves.

Seif 11: quinces, or cherries, or roses, and other kinds of fruits and herbs preserved in honey — the fruits and herbs are the essential and the honey is subordinate, even if they are very crushed. Therefore one blesses over quinces and cherries borei peri ha'etz, over herbs borei peri ha'adama, and over those of roses borei peri ha'adama. Gloss: and any preserve that healthy people do not use except as a remedy — one blesses shehakol over it. [Beit Yosef in the name of the Rosh]
The case and its reversal: The Tur had written the opposite — ועל המורבא המרוקח בדבש היה נראה לי לברך עליו שהכל (טור או״ח סימן ר״ד), מפני שהדבש עיקר (טור או״ח סימן ר״ד) — then reports his colleagues' objection, אלא שחבירי חולקים עלי ואומרים שהדבש הוא טפל שאינו אלא לקיים הדבר המרוקח בו (טור או״ח סימן ר״ד), and concludes והנני מבטל דעתי מפני דעתם (טור או״ח סימן ר״ד). The Meḥaber follows the colleagues.
Why the honey is subordinate: the Beit Yosef puts it for roses — וי״ל דאדרבה כיון שעיקר תיקון הוורדים לאכילה אינו אלא עם הדבש ה״ל דבש טפל שהרי אינו בא אלא להכשיר הוורד לאכילה (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״ד) — and the Mishna Berura generalises it: דהדבש אינו אלא הכשר לדבר המרוקח שמכשירו ומתקנו לאכילה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:נא). summary: what makes a food edible serves it, and what serves it does not rule it.
Even when much crushed — and how far: אפי׳ הם כתושי׳ ביותר (שו״ע או״ח ר״ד:יא); the Mishna Berura sets the limit: דוקא שניכר מהותו ותארו אבל אם נימוח לגמרי עד שנפסד צורתו העצמי מברך לכתחלה שהכל (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:נב).
Roses, though they grow on the tree: ועל של ורדים בורא פרי האדמה (שו״ע או״ח ר״ד:יא), and the Mishna Berura explains: ואע״ג דפרי עץ הם שגדילים על האילן מ״מ כיון שאינן עיקר הפרי דזרע שלהם הם עיקר הפרי והעלים שמרקחין אותם הם הפרחים ע״כ מברך בפה״א (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:נג).
The gloss brings back seif 8: וכל מרקחת שאין בריאים רגילין בו אלא לרפואה מברכין עליו שהכל (רמ״א או״ח ר״ד:יא), and the Mishna Berura gives the reason — הטעם דאף דנהנה אין זה עיקר הנאתו כיון שאין הבריאים רגילין לאכול אותו בכך שעומד רק לרפואה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:נד) — while noting that most poskim do not accept it: ועיין בבדק הבית שכתב שרוב הפוסקים חולקים ע״ז וכן הסכימו האחרונים דצריך לברך עליו ברכה הראויה לו כיון שעכ״פ נהנה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:נה).

Seif 12: whatever is essential and has a subordinate with it — one blesses on the essential and exempts the subordinate. And anything mixed in to bind, or to give aroma, or to colour the dish, is subordinate; but if he mixed it in to give taste to the mixture, it is essential. Therefore honey preparations that are cooked with wheat starch added to bind, from which sweets are made — one does not bless borei minei mezonot over them, because the honey is the essential. Gloss: and it appears that the rule “if he mixed it in to give taste it is essential” applies only where there is substance of the taste-giving item and it is an important item; but spices put into a preserve, though they are there for taste, are not blessed upon, since they are nullified by their minority even though they give taste. Hence the custom to bless only on the preserve and not on the spices in it.
It is the closing clause of a Mishna — זה הכלל כל שהוא עיקר ועמו טפלה מברך על העיקר ופוטר את הטפלה (ברכות מ״ד ע״א) — and the Rambam makes it a principle of blessings: וזה כלל בברכות כל שהוא עקר ועמו טפלה מברך על העקר ופוטר את הטפלה (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ג׳ הלכה ה׳).
The criterion is the purpose of the mixture: Here the Meḥaber copies the Rambam word for word:
The example, and its apparent paradox: לפיכך מיני דבש שמבשלים אותו ונותני׳ בהם חלב חטה כדי לדבק ועושי׳ מהם מיני מתיקה אינו מברך במ״מ מפני שהדבש הוא העיקר (שו״ע או״ח ר״ד:יב). summary: wheat, the noblest of species, yields here to honey — because it was put in only to bind. And with that seif 11 becomes clear: there it was the honey that was put in only to preserve, and the honey that yielded.
The Mishna Berura goes further still, in the name of the Magen Avraham: המ״א ושארי האחרונים הסכימו דהוא דוקא בחמשת מיני דגן אמרינן דהיכא דבא ליתן טעם אף שהוא מיעוט הוא העיקר (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:נז) — and ולפי הסכמת אחרונים כנ״ל אף ביש ממשות לא אזלינן בתרייהו רק בתר רובא (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:נח).

Seif 13: anything whose blessing is doubtful to him — let him bless shehakol.
The Beit Yosef gives its source:
Why it works: the Rambam had established ועל כלם אם ברך שהכל יצא ואפלו על הפת ועל היין (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ח׳ הלכה י׳), and the Mishna Berura draws the inference: דבדיעבד יוצא בשהכל על כל דבר וכאן כיון שמסופק כדיעבד דמי (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:ס). summary: shehakol works after the fact for everything, and one who is in doubt already stands, as it were, after the fact.
A better way out where there is one: the Mishna Berura adds in the name of the Magen Avraham — ומ״מ אם הוא דבר שיכול לפטרו תוך הסעודה עדיף טפי (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:ס). summary: rather than settle a doubt with the broadest blessing, it is better to eat the item during a meal, where the bread exempts it. And this last seif closes the siman on the very word with which it opened: שהכל.
The siman in one sentence: שהכל is not an empty box; it is the blessing of what is pleasant but has no name of its own. It is given to what does not come from the earth, to what has lost its standing, to what the tree was not planted to yield, to what is there only for flavour. It withdraws where there is no enjoyment at all — neat vinegar, water drunk on a stuck morsel. It returns the moment there is enjoyment, even in a remedy, even in forbidden food eaten out of vital need. And when two foods are mixed the question becomes one of עיקר וטפל: what is there only to bind, perfume, colour or preserve follows; what one eats for rules. The last seif closes the siman by restoring to שהכל its second use: the blessing that, in doubt, covers everything.

Practical cases

Case 1 — Meat, fish, eggs, cheese, mushrooms, salt

Situation: meat is served, an omelette, a piece of cheese, a pan of mushrooms; one dips a finger in salt.
Mushrooms are listed although they come out of the ground, because מירבא רבו מארעא מינק לא ינקי מארעא (ברכות מ׳ ע״ב); and salt is listed because הואיל ויש לו מזה עכ״פ הנאה קצת כשנותן לתוך פיו (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:ה). For practice, follow your Rav.

Case 2 — A forgotten bottle: wine, wine turning, or vinegar?

Situation: a bottle open for a long time. The smell is sharp. What does one say?
Practice: smell does not decide — סעיף זה וסעיף ד׳ באו לבאר אודות יין שהתחיל להתקלקל ומטבעו שמתחלה מתקלקל ריחו ואח״כ טעמו (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:כה). If the taste is still wine, If it has begun to turn so far that בני אדם נמנעים לשתותו מפני חמיצותו (שו״ע או״ח ר״ד:ד), it is shehakol. And strong vinegar drunk neat, על החומץ לבדו אינו מברך כלום מפני שהוא מזיקו (שו״ע או״ח ר״ד:ב) — though the Mishna Berura confines that last case to vinegar that bubbles. For practice, follow your Rav.

Case 3 — Water drunk on a stuck morsel, and the sick person’s syrup

Situation: a morsel sticks in the throat and one drinks a glass of water; later one swallows a pleasant-tasting syrup the doctor prescribed.
For the syrup, כל האוכלין והמשקין שאדם אוכל ושותה לרפואה אם טעמם טוב והחיך נהנה מהם מברך עליו תחלה וסוף (שו״ע או״ח ר״ד:ח), and this holds even with no appetite for it at all: אע״פ שאינו תאב להם כלל ואינו אוכלם אלא מחמת אונס חליו כיון שעכ״פ החיך נהנה מהם (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:מג). For practice, follow your Rav.

Case 4 — Preserve, honey sweet, and doubt

Situation: a spoonful of quince preserve; then a sweet made of cooked honey bound with starch; then a preparation one cannot classify.
Practice: for the preserve, הפירות והעשבים הם עיקר והדבש טפל (שו״ע או״ח ר״ד:יא), and one blesses according to the fruit — unless נימוח לגמרי עד שנפסד צורתו העצמי מברך לכתחלה שהכל (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:נב). And facing the unknown, כל דבר שהוא מסופק בברכתו יברך שהכל (שו״ע או״ח ר״ד:יג), with the Mishna Berura adding ומ״מ אם הוא דבר שיכול לפטרו תוך הסעודה עדיף טפי (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ד:ס). For practice, follow your Rav.

Comprehension questions

Check your understanding:
  1. What are the four distinct reasons that bring a food down to shehakol in seif 1, and which example illustrates each?
  2. Why do mushrooms appear in the list although they do come out of the ground (seif 1)?
  3. What exactly separates seif 2 (no blessing at all) from seif 4 (shehakol) — and what decides, smell or taste (seifim 3-4)?
  4. Why do temed pressed with a beam and temed trodden by foot not share the same law (seif 6)?
  5. How do seif 11, where the honey is subordinate, and seif 12, where the honey is essential, fit together?
