The neighbouring simanim settled blessings a man owes: over fragrance, and the thanksgiving of one who was saved. This one deals with a distress that has nothing to show — a dream one wakes from that leaves the soul heavy. The Mechaber writes neither a treatise on dreams nor a key of interpretations: he gives two acts in two lines, a word and a fast. Hebrew text, English rendering and explanation of the ב׳ seifim, with a section of practical cases.

Subject: What to do with a dream that troubles — הטבת חלום, the wording, תענית חלום, and that same day even on Shabbat

This siman does not ask what a dream means. It starts from a fact — ונפשו עגומה עליו, his soul is grieved by it — and gives two acts. The first is a word: let three friends speak well of the dream, not interpret it, for The second is a fast, יפה תענית לבטל חלום רע כאש לנעורת, and the Rama sets in it the siman’s only measure: that same day. Everything else — how many times, at what hour, and what of Shabbat — is only the application of those two acts. We study here at the level of principle; for personal practice one turns to one’s Rav.

📑 Plan of the study

A. הטבת חלום (seif 1) — before whom, what wording, how many times, at what hour
B. תענית חלום (seif 2) — the fast that annuls, and what it demands
C. ובו ביום ואפילו בשבת (רמ״א) — the gloss, its price, and today’s custom
1-3. Practical cases and questions for comprehension

A. הטבת חלום — making the dream good

הֲטָבַת חֲלוֹם — the phrase does not mean “interpret” but “make good”. It is a rare expression, and the Gemara reaches it by correction: it had said אמר רב הונא בר אמי אמר רבי פדת אמר רבי יוחנן: הרואה חלום ונפשו עגומה, ילך ויפתרנו בפני שלשה (ברכות נ״ה ע״ב), objected to that very word — והאמר רב חסדא חלמא דלא מפשר כאגרתא דלא מקריא (ברכות נ״ה ע״ב) — and concluded אלא אימא: יטיבנו בפני שלשה (ברכות נ״ה ע״ב). The Aruch haShulchan draws the thread to its end:

Seif 1: one who has had a dream and whose soul is grieved by it — let it be made good for him before three who love him (that is: who are fond of him). Let him say before them: “I saw a good dream”, and let them say: “it is good and good it shall be”, and so on.
What “his soul is grieved by it” means. היינו אפילו אין בו משמעות לרע (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״כ:א). summary: the dream need not have foretold anything bad; it is enough that one wakes from it with a heavy heart. The siman does not begin with the dream but with the man it has left sad.
Why “make it good” and not “interpret it”. The Gemara first taught אמר רב הונא בר אמי אמר רבי פדת אמר רבי יוחנן: הרואה חלום ונפשו עגומה, ילך ויפתרנו בפני שלשה (ברכות נ״ה ע״ב), then withdrew from that very word: והאמר רב חסדא חלמא דלא מפשר כאגרתא דלא מקריא (ברכות נ״ה ע״ב) — and concluded אלא אימא: יטיבנו בפני שלשה (ברכות נ״ה ע״ב). summary: to interpret is to open the letter; while it stays sealed it does not act. So one does not read the dream, one turns it to the good.
Before whom, and why three. The Mechaber writes באפי תלתא דרחימו ליה; and the Mishna Berura makes it a duty for those who listen: מצוה להמצא עם הג׳ להיטיב מפני שמשיב את נפשו בזה ואף בשבת יכול להיטיב חלום (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״כ:ג). summary: these are not three judges but three friends; to be one of them is a mitzvah, for one gives a man back his soul — and this holds on Shabbat too.
The wording, as the Tur gives it. לייתי שלשה דרחמי ליה ולימא באנפייהו חלמא טבא חזאי ולימרו הנך טבא הוא וטבא ליהוי רחמנא לישוייה לטב שבע זימנין יגזרון עליה מן שמיא דליהוי טבא טבא הוא וטבא ליהוי (טור או״ח סימן ר״כ). summary: the dreamer says something good of his dream, and the three confirm it for him — that the Merciful One turn it to good, and that from Heaven it be decreed seven times that it be good.
The nine verses. ולימרו שלש הפוכות, ושלש פדויות, ושלש שלומות (ברכות נ״ה ע״ב), and likewise the Tur: ונוהגים לאומרו ז׳ פעמים ויאמרו ג׳ הפוכות וג׳ פדויות וג׳ שלומות (טור או״ח סימן ר״כ). summary: three verses in which mourning turns to joy, three of redemption, three of peace — that is their order: reversal, redemption, peace.
How many times: three, or seven. לשון זה צריך שיאמרוהו העונים ג׳ פעמים וי״א דיאמרוהו ז׳ פעמים (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״כ:ד); and the Beit Yossef already reported both usages: וכתבו התוספות שבע זימנין ליגזרו עליה כך הוא הלחש וי״מ דשבע זימנין צ״ל חלמא טבא חזאי וכן לענות אחריו אבל ר״י לא היה רגיל לאומרו רק ג״פ עד כאן והעולם נהגו לאמרו ז׳ פעמים (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״כ). summary: depending on whether “seven times” is read as part of the wording or as a count of repetitions, one says it three times or seven.
What is said to him at the end. ובסוף ההטבה יאמרו לו לך אכול לחמך בשמחה ושתה בלב טוב וגו׳ (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״כ:ד); but the Beit Yossef records an old objection: כתב הכלבו ואח״כ אומרים לו לך אכול בשמחה לחמך וכתב הר״מ נ״ע בשם רבי יהודה החסיד שאין לאמרו לפי שיש בראשי תיבות אבל אבל אומרים לו לך בשמחה אכול לחמך (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״כ). summary: the verse from Kohelet closes the hatava; because its first letters spell the word “mourning”, the custom reversed its words.
At what hour. And one thing is required of the dreamer: ויזכור החלום במחשבתו בשעת הטבה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״כ:ב). summary: in the morning out of diligence, or in the evening after the fast; and in both he must hold the dream in mind while it is being made good for him.

B. תענית חלום — the fast of the dream

תַּעֲנִית חֲלוֹם — a fast undertaken because of a dream, not because of a misfortune that has occurred. It resembles no other: it is not declared the day before, it cannot be deferred, and it rests on one image of the Gemara — יפה תענית לחלום כאש לנעורת (שבת י״א ע״א). The Rambam gives its reason, and it is not magical: כדי שישוב ויעור במעשיו ויחפש בהן ויחזר בתשובה (רמב״ם הלכות תעניות פרק א הלכה יב).

Seif 2 — יפה תענית לבטל חלום רע

יפה תענית לבטל חלום רע כאש לנעורת:
Seif 2: a fast is good for annulling a bad dream, as fire is for tow.
The Gemara’s image. ואמר רב יוסף: אפילו בשבת (שבת י״א ע״א). summary: fire does not argue with tow, it consumes it at once — such is the efficacy the Gemara ascribes to a fast against a bad dream.
Two words the Mechaber added. The Gemara says only יפה תענית לחלום; the Mechaber writes לבטל חלום רע, and the Tur had glossed likewise: גרסינן בפ״ק דשבת א״ר יפה תענית לחלום כאש לנעורת פירוש לבטלו א״ר חסדא ובו ביום הלכך יכול להתענות אפי׳ בשבת על חלום רע שזהו תענוג שלו לבטל חלום רע שחלם (טור או״ח סימן ר״כ). summary: the fast is not mourning for the dream but its annulment — which is why there is no ground for prolonging it.
Obligation, or option? The Rambam writes הרואה חלום רע צריך להתענות למחר (רמב״ם הלכות תעניות פרק א הלכה יב); but the Mishna Berura concludes ומ״מ אין מחויב להתענות אלא רשות (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״כ:ז), and the Magen Avraham gives the reason: ומ״מ אין מחויב להתענות דהא שמואל אמר החלומות שוא ידברו (מגן אברהם או״ח סימן ר״כ). summary: the Rambam speaks in terms of obligation, and the Acharonim made it an option — because a dream is not necessarily a message.
The fast alone does nothing. אבל דוקא כשעושה תשובה עמו כי התענית מועיל כמו קרבן לחטא מה קרבן אינו מועיל בלי תשובה שנאמר זבח רשעים תועבה אף תענית חלום וכו׳ (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״כ:ו); and the Rambam said the same in other words: כדי שישוב ויעור במעשיו ויחפש בהן ויחזר בתשובה (רמב״ם הלכות תעניות פרק א הלכה יב). summary: the fast is not an operation upon the dream but a waking upon oneself; without return it is a sacrifice without repentance.
Who does not fast. עוברות ומניקות אין להורות להם להתענות רק יפדו בממון (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״כ:ה). summary: pregnant and nursing women do not fast; they are not directed to, and they redeem the fast with money.
A fast that cannot be deferred. אמר להו: תענית חלום הוא (תענית י״ב ע״ב). summary: other fasts a man borrows and repays — this one he does not; it holds only on the day itself, which is exactly what the Rama will say.
And a dream about someone else. מי שחלם לו חלום קשה על חבירו יתענה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״כ:ד). summary: one who dreamt something hard about his fellow is the one who fasts — for at times the dream is aimed at the dreamer himself and merely shows another’s likeness.

C. ובו ביום ואפילו בשבת — the Rama’s gloss

בּוֹ בַּיּוֹם — “that same day”. It is the only measure the siman carries, and it comes from the Gemara: ואמר רבא בר מחסיא אמר רב חמא בר גוריא אמר רב: יפה תענית לחלום כאש לנעורת. אמר רב חסדא: ובו ביום. ואמר רב יוסף: אפילו בשבת (שבת י״א ע״א). Whence a consequence the Gemara itself draws — such a fast is neither borrowed nor repaid: אמרו ליה: ולוזיף מר וליפרע, לא סבר מר להא דאמר רב יהודה אמר רב: לוה אדם תעניתו ופורע? אמר להו: תענית חלום הוא (תענית י״ב ע״ב).

Rama’s gloss —

Gloss (Rama): and precisely that same day; and even on Shabbat. And see further, siman 288.
“That same day” — and what follows from it. גרסינן בפ״ק דשבת א״ר יפה תענית לחלום כאש לנעורת פירוש לבטלו א״ר חסדא ובו ביום הלכך יכול להתענות אפי׳ בשבת על חלום רע שזהו תענוג שלו לבטל חלום רע שחלם (טור או״ח סימן ר״כ). summary: the Tur’s reasoning is tight — if the fast holds only on the day itself and that day is Shabbat, then abstaining is this man’s own delight, and the fast does not contradict the Shabbat.
What a fast on Shabbat obtains — and what it costs. אמר רב נחמן בר יצחק: ליתיב תעניתא לתעניתא (ברכות ל״א ע״ב). summary: the decree is torn up, but the Shabbat remains owed; one pays for that fast with a second fast.
The second fast: required or not? The Tur writes וצריך להתענות יום אחד על שביטל עונג שבת (טור או״ח סימן ר״כ); the Beit Yossef marks its limit: ומ״ש ואינו חובה שיתענה יום ראשון של אחריו כ״כ המרדכי בפ״ק דשבת וה״ה בפ״א מהל׳ תעניות וכל זה יתבאר בסי׳ רפ״ח ובסימן תקס״ד (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״כ). summary: a second fast is needed, but nothing requires it the next day — Sunday is no fixed date for it.
What siman 288 says, to which the Rama refers. מותר להתענות בו תענית חלום כדי שיקרע גזר דינו וצריך להתענות ביום ראשון כדי שיתכפר לו מה שביטל עונג שבת ואם תשש כחו ואינו יכול להתענות שני ימים רצופים לא יתענה ביום ראשון ויתענה אח״כ (שו״ע או״ח רפ״ח:ד). summary: siman 288 restates the rule and eases it — one whose strength has failed and who cannot fast two days running does not fast on Sunday but defers.
And in our own time. And the Aruch haShulchan concludes: ונכון שלא להתענות בשבת (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן ר״כ), adding even ואף גם בחול אין להרגיל, כי זה לא נאמר רק על אדם טהור ושלא במילוי הכרס, וזולתם אין בהם ממש (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן ר״כ). summary: since we can no longer read dreams, one does not fast on Shabbat — save for a few named dreams — nor does one make a habit of it on weekdays.
The prayer of one who fasts on Shabbat. המתענה בשבת אומר עננו אחר סיום תפלתו בלא חתימה וכוללו באלהי נצור (שו״ע או״ח רפ״ח:ו); the Tur had already indicated it: וכתב בה״ג שאומר עננו באלהי נצור (טור או״ח סימן ר״כ). summary: he does not say “anenu” as a blessing of its own but includes it in “Elokai netzor” at the end of the amida, without a closing formula.
The siman in one sentence: a dream that leaves the soul heavy is not read but turned — three friends speak well of it (seif 1); and one who would annul it fasts that same day, even on Shabbat (seif 2 and the Rama’s gloss) — but a fast without return upon oneself annuls nothing, and today’s custom has drawn back from fasting on Shabbat.

Practical cases

Case 1 — I wake with a dream that weighs on me

Situation: I wake from a confused dream, not knowing what it announced — but the day starts heavy. What should I do?
Practice: The siman is written for exactly this: הרואה חלום ונפשו עגומה עליו יטיבנו באפי תלתא דרחימו ליה (שו״ע או״ח ר״כ:א). Nor need the dream have said anything bad — היינו אפילו אין בו משמעות לרע (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״כ:א). Three friends suffice, and there is no need to tell them the dream: the dreamer says before them חלמא טבא חזאי, and they answer לייתי שלשה דרחמי ליה ולימא באנפייהו חלמא טבא חזאי ולימרו הנך טבא הוא וטבא ליהוי רחמנא לישוייה לטב שבע זימנין יגזרון עליה מן שמיא דליהוי טבא טבא הוא וטבא ליהוי (טור או״ח סימן ר״כ). What is asked of him is to hold it in mind: ויזכור החלום במחשבתו בשעת הטבה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״כ:ב). summary: one does not look for a meaning; one asks three friends to speak well of what one saw. For practice, follow your Rav.

Case 2 — I am asked to be one of the three

Situation: A friend says he slept badly and asks me to join two others to “make his dream good”. Is this a serious matter?
Practice: It is, and the Mishna Berura says so in plain words: מצוה להמצא עם הג׳ להיטיב מפני שמשיב את נפשו בזה ואף בשבת יכול להיטיב חלום (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״כ:ג). The wording answered is the Tur’s, לייתי שלשה דרחמי ליה ולימא באנפייהו חלמא טבא חזאי ולימרו הנך טבא הוא וטבא ליהוי רחמנא לישוייה לטב שבע זימנין יגזרון עליה מן שמיא דליהוי טבא טבא הוא וטבא ליהוי (טור או״ח סימן ר״כ), and custom fixed the number: לשון זה צריך שיאמרוהו העונים ג׳ פעמים וי״א דיאמרוהו ז׳ פעמים (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״כ:ד). At the end the verse is said to him — ובסוף ההטבה יאמרו לו לך אכול לחמך בשמחה ושתה בלב טוב וגו׳ (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״כ:ד) — in the form the Beit Yossef reports: כתב הכלבו ואח״כ אומרים לו לך אכול בשמחה לחמך וכתב הר״מ נ״ע בשם רבי יהודה החסיד שאין לאמרו לפי שיש בראשי תיבות אבל אבל אומרים לו לך בשמחה אכול לחמך (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״כ). summary: agreeing is a mitzvah; one answers the wording three or seven times as the place has it, then the nine verses, then the verse from Kohelet. For practice, follow your Rav.

Case 3 — The dream came on Shabbat night

Situation: The dream woke me on Shabbat night. The Rama says “that same day, and even on Shabbat”. Must I fast?
But the reckoning does not end there: Yet in our time וי״א שבזמן הזה אין להתענות תענית חלום בשבת שאין אנו בקיאין בפתרון חלומות לידע איזה טוב ואיזה רע (שו״ע או״ח רפ״ח:ה), and the Aruch haShulchan rules: ונכון שלא להתענות בשבת (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן ר״כ). The hatava, by contrast, remains open: מצוה להמצא עם הג׳ להיטיב מפני שמשיב את נפשו בזה ואף בשבת יכול להיטיב חלום (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״כ:ג). summary: the letter of the Rama permits the fast, but custom has drawn back from it; what is done on Shabbat is the hatava. For practice, follow your Rav.

Questions for comprehension

Check your understanding:
  1. Why does the Gemara set aside “let him interpret it” in favour of “let it be made good for him” (ברכות נ״ה ע״ב)?
  2. What exactly does ונפשו עגומה עליו mean according to the Mishna Berura (מ״ב ר״כ:א)?
  3. Three times or seven: where does the divergence come from, and what does the Beit Yossef report?
  4. Is the dream fast an obligation? Compare the Rambam and the Mishna Berura (מ״ב ר״כ:ז).
  5. What is still owed to the Shabbat when one has fasted on it, and what is the remedy
