The previous siman blessed trees in blossom; this one lifts its eyes to what is never cultivated. It answers three questions and no more: upon what does one bless, which wording does one say — for there are two, and the siman lets one choose — and how many times, and until when. Hebrew text, English translation and explanation of the ג׳ seifim, with a section of practical cases.

One act, three questions. Upon what? — five phenomena, and the Mechaber names them one by one: the comet, the earthquake, the lightning, the thunder, the gale. Which wording? — עושה מעשה בראשית, or, if he wishes, שכחו וגבורתו מלא עולם; one or the other, never both. How many times? — once, so long as the clouds hold; and seif 3 adds a limit of time that nothing else in these simanim had set: We study here at the level of principle; for personal practice one turns to one’s Rav.
📑 Plan of the study
A. חמשת הדברים (seif 1) — the comet, the earthquake, the lightning, the thunder and the wind
C. נתפזרו העבים (seif 2) — how many times one blesses during a storm
D. בבה״כ ותוך כדי דיבור (seif 3) — the place where one does not bless, and the time limit
1-3. Practical cases and comprehension questions
A. חמשת הדברים — the five phenomena
זִיקִים — the word that gives the siman its title, and which the Mechaber does not leave in the dark: he defines it in the seif itself. The Gemara already asked —
» (ברכות נ״ח ע״ב) — and Shmuel, who declared
» (ברכות נ״ח ע״ב), admitted he did not know what that body is. So the siman treats not one phenomenon but five, and one blessing covers them all.
Seif 1: on the zikim — that is a kind of star that shoots like an arrow across the length of the sky, from place to place, its light drawn out like a rod — on the trembling of the earth, on lightning, on thunder, and on winds that blew in a gale: on each one of these he says “Blessed are You, Hashem our God, King of the universe, who makes the work of Creation”; and if he wishes he may say “Blessed are You, Hashem our God, King of the universe, whose strength and might fill the world”.
The five, and why these five. The seif names not one phenomenon but five:
The Aruch HaShulchan reports, in the name of the Vilna Gaon, a reason for that number:
» (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רכ״ז). summary: the four elements of the earth — fire, air, water, dust — with heaven as the fifth; the list is not an inventory but a map of the created world.
Two explanations of the זיק, and both are kept. The Mechaber gives the first in the seif itself:
The Mishnah Berurah adds the second:
« וי״א שהוא כוכב שיש לו זנב ושבט של אורה ושניהם העתיקו אחרונים לדינא » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ז:א); and the Aruch HaShulchan sets them side by side:
« וזיקין הוא כמין כוכב היורה כחץ באורך השמים ממקום למקום, ונמשך אורו כשבט, אי נמי כוכב שנראה שיש לו זנב ארוך (רע״ב) » (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רכ״ז). summary: the star that shoots from one end of the sky to the other, and the long-tailed body — the Acharonim kept both for practice.
Only once in a night.
« ולא יברך בלילה אחד רק פ״א אפילו אם ראה כוכב אחר רץ באותו לילה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ז:ב); and the Shaarei Teshuvah write the same:
And if it is the same long-tailed body seen again:
« ואם אותו כוכב עצמו שיש לו שבט רואהו עוד הפעם בלילה אחרת א״צ לחזור ולברך כל שהוא עדיין בתוך למ״ד יום לראיה ראשונה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ז:א). summary: the blessing is not counted per star but per night; and for a body that stays, thirty days must pass before it is new again.
רעדת הארץ — the trembling earth. The Mishnah calls it
« זועות » and the Gemara asks what it is:
» (ברכות נ״ט ע״א); the Aruch HaShulchan renders it in a line:
As to blessing on a second tremor, the Shaarei Teshuvah apply here the rule of seif 2:
« ולענין זועות אם עבר זמנו מה בין רעש לרעש דאסח דעתיה מיניה צריך לחזור ולברך ואם לאו א״צ לחזור ולברך וכן לענין רוחות » (שערי תשובה או״ח סימן רכ״ז). summary: the earthquake belongs to this siman as the storm does; and there too what decides is whether his mind had turned away in between.
הברקים — lightning, and what is not lightning.
The Mishnah Berurah sets a limit:
« ואותן שהן באים בלא רעם כלל רק מחמת חום מצדד הח״א שאין זה ברקים הנזכר בגמרא ואין מברכין עליהם » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ז:ג). summary: heat lightning, the kind that comes on summer nights with no thunder at all, is not the lightning the Gemara speaks of — and the Chayei Adam inclines not to bless on it.
הרעמים — thunder, and why it was created.
« ועל הרעמים. מאי רעמים? אמר שמואל: ענני בגלגלא. » (ברכות נ״ט ע״א);
And the Gemara gives thunder a purpose:
» (ברכות נ״ט ע״א). summary: whether the sound comes from clouds in the sphere or from clouds pouring water into one another, the Gemara does not stop at the physics — thunder was created to straighten the crookedness of the heart.
» (ברכות נ״ט ע״א), and Abaye adds two traits:
The Magen Avraham notes that a wind not blowing in a gale also has its blessing:
« ואם נשבו בנחת אומר ברוך עושה מע״ב » (מגן אברהם או״ח סימן רכ״ז), and wonders at the omission:
The Mishnah Berurah decides for us:
« ואם שלא בזעף אם הוא רוח גדול מברך עושה מעשה בראשית ולא יוכל לברך שכחו וגבורתו וכו׳ אחרי שהוא שלא בזעף גדול » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ז:ד);
« וטוב לברך תמיד על רוח סערה שאין מצויה רק ברכת עושה מעשה בראשית שבזה בודאי יוצא ממ״נ כי אין אנו בקיאין כ״כ מהו בזעף » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ז:ד). summary: the measure of זעף escapes us; so one keeps to עושה מעשה בראשית, which fits either way.
B. שתי הברכות — two formulas, and one chooses
עוֹשֶׂה מַעֲשֵׂה בְרֵאשִׁית and שֶׁכֹּחוֹ וּגְבוּרָתוֹ מָלֵא עוֹלָם — the Mishnah had divided the two wordings between two lists: the latter for the five phenomena of our seif, the former for mountains, seas and deserts. The Gemara asks why; out of its answer comes the whole of seif 1, and the freedom of choice it leaves.
What the Mishnah said, and the difficulty. The Mishnah divides:
» (משנה ברכות פרק ט משנה ב) — and then
And the Gemara is puzzled:
» (ברכות נ״ט ע״א). summary: if lightning too is the work of Creation, why does the Mishnah reserve עושה מעשה בראשית for mountains and rivers?
The two answers: Abaye and Rava.
» (ברכות נ״ט ע״א) — and the Gemara concludes:
Rashi explains why mountains do not carry the second wording:
» (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רכ״ז). summary: for Abaye the Mishnah is read as one; for Rava, here there are two possible blessings and there only one — for a mountain does not fill the world as a thunderclap does.
What the Mechaber ruled — and the order he reverses. The Rambam writes:
The Mechaber says the same in reverse order:
The Beit Yosef had laid out the two readings of Rava:
« ודעת הראב״ד בהשגות דהא דאמר רבא מברך תרתי שיברך על כל אחד מאותם הדברים שתי ברכות הללו וכ״נ מדברי רש״י » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רכ״ז);
» (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רכ״ז). summary: two blessings to be said, or two blessings to choose between — the Mechaber follows the second reading, that of Tosafot, the Rif, the Rambam and the Rosh, and puts first the wording the Mishnah cited second.
One chooses — one does not combine.
« אבל לא יברך שתי ברכות כאחת אלא או זו או זו » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ז:ו). summary: the words ואם ירצה in the seif open an alternative, not an addition: this one or that one, never both together.
What « שכחו וגבורתו מלא עולם » means.
The Aruch HaShulchan says why these five deserve that wording:
« מפני שהם נראים ונשמעים בגודל משך הארץ » (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רכ״ז). summary: the strength the blessing names is not the storm’s but the One who gives it strength — and these phenomena are seen and heard from one end of the land to the other.
The widespread custom, and what the Mishnah Berurah says of it.
« ואם לא היו תכופים זה אחר זה מברך תחלה על הברק [שהוא מתראה תחלה לעין האדם] עושה מע״ב ואח״כ על הרעם שכחו וגבורתו מ״ע » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ז:ה). summary: the custom reserves עושה מעשה בראשית for lightning and שכחו וגבורתו for thunder; the Mishnah Berurah justifies it, while noting that either fits both, and that when they come together one blessing covers them.
The Taz finds no reason for the custom.
And the Aruch HaShulchan goes further:
The Magen Avraham had written the same rule:
« נ״ל דאם שמע רעם וראה ברק כאחד מברך על שניהם ברכ׳ א׳ ברוך עושה מע״ב » (מגן אברהם או״ח סימן רכ״ז). summary: when the lightning precedes the thunder by an instant, all agree one blessing suffices; the Aruch HaShulchan holds that saying a second one then is a blessing in vain. In practice, one follows one’s Rav.
C. נתפזרו העבים — how many times one blesses
נִתְפַּזְּרוּ הֶעָבִים — seif 2 changes no wording: it counts. A storm is not a series of separate events but a single one, so long as the sky stays laden; and what reopens the obligation is not the passing of time but a sky that opens and closes again.
Seif 2: so long as the clouds have not scattered, he is discharged with a single blessing. If they scattered between one flash and another, or between one thunderclap and another, he must bless again.
The source: the Yerushalmi, and the Rosh’s explanation.
« ירושלמי שם אם בטרודין דיו פעם אחת ביום ואם במפסיקין צריך לברך על כל פעם ופעם וכתב הרא״ש פירוש טרודים שלא נתפזרו העבים בינתים מפסיקין שנתפזרו העבים בינתים וכן פירש ה״ר יונה בשם ר״ח: » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רכ״ז). summary: “crowded” means the clouds did not scatter in between, “interrupted” that they did — which is exactly what the Mechaber writes in plain Hebrew.
What “scattered” exactly means.
« אבל היכא שנתפזרו העבים ע״י הרוח אחד הנה ואחד הנה ועדיין מעונן הרקיע אז נפטר הכל ע״י ברכה הראשונה ואין צריך לחזור ולברך מחדש » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ז:ח). summary: it is not enough that the clouds move — the sky must have cleared entirely and then clouded over again: only then is it a new matter.
And the next day?
The Aruch HaShulchan describes the same:
« כשבירך על הרעם ועל הברק, לא יברך על עוד רעמים וברקים כל זמן שהגשם הולך והעננים מכונסים. » (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רכ״ז);
» (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רכ״ז). summary: the blessing covers one storm, not a season — a new day reopens the obligation in every case.
D. בבה״כ ותוך כדי דיבור — the place, and the time limit
תּוֹךְ כְּדֵי דִבּוּר — “the space of one utterance”, the shortest measure in halacha. Seif 3 brings it out through an extreme case: a man hears thunder where no blessing may be said. Shall he go out? It depends on what he can do within that very short span — and on what that span, in truth, measures.
Seif 3: if he was sitting in the privy and heard thunder or saw lightning — if he can go out and bless within the space of one utterance, let him go out; and if not, let him not go out.
Which place, exactly. The Mechaber abbreviates בבה״כ; the Tur writes the word in full:
« היה יושב בבית הכסא ושמע קול רעם או ראה ברק אם יכול לצאת ולברך תוך כדי דיבור יצא ואם לאו לא יצא: » (טור או״ח סימן רכ״ז), and the Beit Yosef gives the source:
The Mishnah Berurah extends the case:
« וה״ה אם היה בבית שמקצבין בו בשר דשם ריח מעופש מאד או שהיה הולך במבואות המטונפות ויכול לזרז עצמו לצאת משם תיכף » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ז:ט). summary: the privy and any place like it — a butchery heavy with smell, a filthy alley — anywhere a blessing may not be said.
« יצא » does not mean “he has discharged his duty”. The Taz reads it so:
« בציר״י דאין שייך לומר כאן יצא בקמ״ץ דהא פטור הוא כל שא״א לו » (ט״ז או״ח סימן רכ״ז), and the Mishnah Berurah explains it the same way:
« פי׳ ימהר לצאת משם כדי שלא יפסיד הברכה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ז:יב). summary: the word is not a past tense but an imperative — let him go out; and the seif measures not what he has gained but what he must do.
He must still be able to come out fit to bless.
« והיינו היכא שלא עשה צרכיו ולא נגע בידיו במקום הטינופת » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ז:יא);
The Magen Avraham had already laid it down:
And if need presses him:
« י״א דאפילו אם נתעורר לעשות צרכיו מ״מ כל זמן שאין מתאוה כ״כ שיהא בו משום בל תשקצו יכול לצאת משם קודם שעשה צרכיו ולברך ויש מחמירין בזה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ז:י);
« ובפרט היכי דמשער שישמע עוד קול רעם ויוכל לברך אח״כ בודאי נכון להחמיר » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ז:י). summary: clean hands and a body not yet engaged — otherwise the moment has passed, and it is better to wait for the next clap.
The time limit, and the order of blessings.
The Taz, however, does not give the limit that reach:
« אלא דודאי אחר שיעור תכ״ד ג״כ צריך לברך כל שאפשר לו וכמ״ש בשאר ברכות כגון בסי׳ רכ״ו לענין רואה אילנות » (ט״ז או״ח סימן רכ״ז). summary: for the Mishnah Berurah, once כדי דיבור has passed that flash can no longer be blessed; for the Taz the limit governs only the duty to hurry. In practice, one follows one’s Rav.
The Aruch HaShulchan finds the case almost impossible.
» (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רכ״ז); and he offers another reading:
« ולעניות דעתי אין כוונת הירושלמי שנכנס לעשות צרכיו אלא שנכנס לאיזה דבר, ובזה האופן יכול לצאת תוך כדי דיבור » (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רכ״ז). summary: to gather all the conditions — nothing done, nothing touched, water at hand — is nearly impossible; perhaps the Yerushalmi was not speaking of one who had entered to relieve himself.
The siman in one sentence: five phenomena, one blessing in two wordings to choose from — עושה מעשה בראשית or שכחו וגבורתו מלא עולם, never both — once only so long as the clouds hold, and all of it within the space of one utterance.
Practical cases
Case 1 — A storm breaks this evening
Situation: the sky darkens, the lightning passes, the thunder follows. What do I say, and how many times?
Conduct: the wording is that of the seif:
« על כל אחד מאלו אומר בא״י אמ״ה עושה מעשה בראשית ואם ירצה יאמר בא״י אמ״ה שכחו וגבורתו מלא עולם » (שו״ע או״ח רכ״ז:א), without combining them:
If lightning and thunder come together:
And as to the count:
« כל זמן שלא נתפזרו העבים נפטר בברכה אחת » (שו״ע או״ח רכ״ז:ב), given that
« אבל היכא שנתפזרו העבים ע״י הרוח אחד הנה ואחד הנה ועדיין מעונן הרקיע אז נפטר הכל ע״י ברכה הראשונה ואין צריך לחזור ולברך מחדש » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ז:ח). summary: one blessing for the whole storm, in either of the two wordings. In practice, one follows one’s Rav.
Case 2 — I see a shooting star
Situation: on a summer night a trail of light crosses the sky. Is there a blessing?
Conduct: it is the first word of the siman:
And one does not repeat:
« ולא יברך בלילה אחד רק פ״א אפילו אם ראה כוכב אחר רץ באותו לילה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ז:ב); for the long-tailed body,
« ואם אותו כוכב עצמו שיש לו שבט רואהו עוד הפעם בלילה אחרת א״צ לחזור ולברך כל שהוא עדיין בתוך למ״ד יום לראיה ראשונה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ז:א). summary: yes, and only once in the night. In practice, one follows one’s Rav.
Case 3 — Thunder catches me in an unfit place
Situation: I hear thunder where no blessing may be said. Must I rush outside?
Conduct:
« אם יכול לצאת ולברך תוך כדי דיבור יצא ואם לאו לא יצא » (שו״ע או״ח רכ״ז:ג); the Mishnah Berurah explains the word:
« פי׳ ימהר לצאת משם כדי שלא יפסיד הברכה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ז:יב), and sets the condition:
And if one is already engaged:
« ובפרט היכי דמשער שישמע עוד קול רעם ויוכל לברך אח״כ בודאי נכון להחמיר » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רכ״ז:י). summary: one hurries if one can come straight out and bless fittingly; otherwise one stays, and waits for the next clap. In practice, one follows one’s Rav.
