The previous siman fixed the time of the evening Shema; this one settles its blessings — two before, two after — and then draws every consequence of a single demand: that redemption should touch prayer. What is entitled to slip in between? Hebrew text, English translation and an explanation of the ד׳ seifim, with a section of practical cases.

An evening prayer is one said after recounting the Exodus: from that comes the whole tension of the siman. The Sages wanted the blessing of redemption to touch the Amidah; yet they themselves placed Hashkivenu between the two, then the eighteen verses, then the Kaddish. The siman answers that what they instituted does not cut — it lengthens. And it draws three consequences: what one does not speak about, what may nevertheless be announced, and what one gives up when the congregation is already praying. We study here at the level of principle; for personal conduct, refer to your Rav’s ruling.

📑 Plan of study

A. שתים לפניה ושתים לאחריה (seif 1) — the four blessings of the evening, and why the fourth exists
B. סמיכת גאולה לתפלה (seif 2) — the Gemara’s objection, its answer, and what remains permitted
C. י״ח פסוקים ויראו עינינו (seif 2) — the synagogues in the fields, and the Rama’s gloss
D. תפלה בציבור (seif 3) — when the congregation comes before the join
E. אמן אחר ברכת עצמו (seif 4) — after which blessing, and what the Rama adds
1-3. Practical cases and comprehension questions

A. שתים לפניה ושתים לאחריה — the four blessings of the evening

שֶׁבַע בַּיּוֹם הִלַּלְתִּיךָseven times a day have I praised You. The tally is ancient: three blessings in the morning, four in the evening. The Beit Yosef records it in the name of the Yerushalmi: « ירושלמי ר׳ יוסי בר בון בשם ריב״ל ע״ש שבע ביום הללתיך כלו׳ שבשחר מברך שתים לפניה ואחת לאחריה ובערב שתים לפניה ושתים לאחריה הרי ז׳ » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רל״ו)

Seif 1: in the evening one recites two blessings before the Shema and two after it.
The two before. « אשר בדברו וכו׳ ואהבת עולם ואינה פותחת בברוך דהויא סמוכה לראשונה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:ב). summary: the first is אשר בדברו מעריב ערבים, the second אהבת עולם — and the latter does not open with ברוך, being adjacent to the one before it
Where to pause in the first blessing. « ויש להפסיק בין ברקיע כרצונו לבין בורא יום ולילה דכרצונו קאי אדלעיל » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:ב). summary: כרצונו belongs to what precedes it, not to what follows; one therefore pauses before בורא יום ולילה. The Magen Avraham had said so first: « כתוב בעמק ברכה שיש להפסיק בין ברקיע כרצונו ובין בורא יום ולילה » (מגן אברהם או״ח סימן רל״ו)
Two rites, one seal. The Tur describes the Sephardi wording: « הראשונה אשר בדברו מעריב ערבים וכו׳ וחותמת ומבדיל בין יום ובין לילה בא״י המעריב ערבים זו היא נוסח ספרד » (טור או״ח סימן רל״ו); and reports his brother’s preference: « וכתב אחי ה״ר יחיאל ז״ל ויותר נכון נוסח ספרד כי אין זה מעין חתימה סמוך לחתימה » (טור או״ח סימן רל״ו). The Mishnah Berurah rules the same way: « ומנהג ספרד שלא לומר ה׳ צבאות וכו׳ אל חי וכו׳ אלא מסיימין תיכף אחרי מבדיל בין יום וכו׳ ברוך אתה וכו׳ כי היכי דלהוי מעין חתימה סמוך לחתימה וכן נכון » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:ב). summary: the rule is that a blessing’s close must be foreshadowed just before it; the Sephardi wording satisfies this directly, and the Tur showed that the Ashkenazi wording satisfies it too
The two after. « ראשונה אמת ואמונה ואינה פותחת בברוך דהויא סמוכה לחברתה דק״ש לא הוי הפסק וחותם בא״י גאל ישראל ולא גואל ישראל כמו בתפלה משום שנתקנה על הגאולה שעברה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:ג). summary: the first is אמת ואמונה, sealed גאל ישראל — in the past tense, for it speaks of the redemption already granted, unlike the Amidah which asks for the one to come. The Tur wrote as much: « וחותם בא״י גאל ישראל ולא גואל ישראל שנתקנה על הגאולה שעברה » (טור או״ח סימן רל״ו)
The fourth — and why it exists. « וברכה שניה השכיבנו וחותם שומר עמו ישראל לעד מפני שלילה צריכין שימור מן המזיקין » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:ג); and the Tur in the same words: « שניה השכיבנו וחותם שומר את עמו ישראל לעד מפני שלילה צריכה שימור מן המזיקין » (טור או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: in the morning there is only one blessing after the Shema; in the evening one is added, because the night requires guarding
Hashkivenu is itself a redemption. « וכתבו בתר״י הטעם דכשעבר ה׳ לנגוף את מצרים היו ישראל מפחדים ומתפללים להש״י שיקיים דברו שלא יתן המשחית לבא אל בתיהם לנגוף וכנגד אותה תפלה תקנו לומר השכיבנו הלכך מעין גאולה היא » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:ג); and the Beit Yosef in the name of the Ri: « כתב הר״י הטעם דהשכיבנו כגאולה אריכתא דמיא מפני שכשעבר השם לנגוף את מצרים היו מפחדים ומתפללים לשם יתברך שיקיים דברו שלא יתן המשחית לבא אל בתיהם לנגוף וכנגד אותה תפלה תקנו לומר השכיבנו הילכך מעין גאולה הוי » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: on the night of the Exodus Israel prayed to be guarded — Hashkivenu is that prayer, which is why it makes no break with the redemption
The Rambam’s tally. « הַקּוֹרֵא קְרִיאַת שְׁמַע מְבָרֵךְ לְפָנֶיהָ וּלְאַחֲרֶיהָ. בַּיּוֹם מְבָרֵךְ שְׁתַּיִם לְפָנֶיהָ וְאַחַת לְאַחֲרֶיהָ. וּבַלַּיְלָה מְבָרֵךְ שְׁתַּיִם לְפָנֶיהָ וּשְׁתַּיִם לְאַחֲרֶיהָ. » (רמב״ם הלכות קריאת שמע פרק א הלכה ה). summary: the same division, set out as a general law of the blessings of the Shema, by day and by night
What is said just before. « והמנהג לומר והוא רחום קודם תפלת ערבית » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:א). summary: the custom is to say והוא רחום before the evening prayer — and the Mishnah Berurah refers to the Tur for the reason
A warning from Barekhu onwards. « צריך ליזהר מאד שלא לספר אחר ברכו דערבית אפילו קודם שהתחיל לברך הברכה ראשונה אם דעתו להתפלל אז מעריב עם הצבור » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:א). summary: once the congregation has answered Barekhu they are already within the blessings; speaking then is as grave as speaking in the middle of a paragraph — and the Mishnah Berurah observes that many stumble here

B. סמיכת גאולה לתפלה — joining redemption to prayer

The whole siman rests on one line of Rabbi Yochanan: « דְּאָמַר רַבִּי יוֹחָנָן: אֵיזֶהוּ בֶּן הָעוֹלָם הַבָּא — זֶה הַסּוֹמֵךְ גְּאוּלָּה לִתְפִלָּה שֶׁל עַרְבִית. The Mishnah Berurah reduces it to its consequence: « שגם בערבית מצוה לסמוך גאולה לתפלה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:ד)

Seif 2: one must not speak between the blessing of redemption of the evening and the Amidah. And even those who have the custom of saying the eighteen verses and Yir’u eineinu must not interrupt between Yir’u eineinu and the Amidah. However, the announcement the reader makes of Rosh Chodesh between the Kaddish and the evening Amidah is not an interruption, since it is a need of the prayer; and so too he may say Barekhu to discharge one who did not hear it, and that is no interruption. Rama’s gloss: and see above siman 69. I have seen meticulous people whose custom is to stand while they say the eighteen verses of Barukh Hashem le’olam etc., and it is a fine custom, for they were instituted in place of the Amidah of eighteen blessings; therefore it is fitting to stand for them as for the Amidah.
The Gemara’s objection — and its answer. » (ברכות ד׳ ע״ב). summary: if Hashkivenu comes between, the join looks broken; but a blessing the Sages instituted does not cut — it lengthens
The same reasoning as in the morning. » (ברכות ד׳ ע״ב). summary: in the morning too a verse is interposed before the Amidah and nobody calls it a break; the evening follows the same logic
The Rambam sets it down as law. « וּבִתְפִלַּת הָעֶרֶב קוֹרֵא קְרִיאַת שְׁמַע וּמְבָרֵךְ לְפָנֶיהָ וּלְאַחֲרֶיהָ וְסוֹמֵךְ גְּאֻלָּה לִתְפִלָּה וּמִתְפַּלֵּל מְעֻמָּד » (רמב״ם הלכות תפלה פרק ז הלכה יח); and he adds: « וְאַף עַל פִּי שֶׁמְּבָרֵךְ הַשְׁכִּיבֵנוּ אַחַר גָּאַל יִשְׂרָאֵל אֵינָהּ הֶפְסֵק בֵּין גְּאֻלָּה לִתְפִלָּה וַהֲרֵי שְׁתֵּיהֶן כִּבְרָכָה אַחַת אֲרֻכָּה » (רמב״ם הלכות תפלה פרק ז הלכה יח). summary: the two blessings count as one long blessing — the Gemara’s answer, cast as halakhah
What this forbids in practice. « אין לספר בין גאולה דערבית לתפלה » (שו״ע או״ח רל״ו:ב); and the Aruch HaShulchan repeats it in the language of our synagogues: « וכיון דגם בערבית יש חיוב לסמוך גאולה לתפלה, לכן יש ליזהר שלא לדבר בין ברכת ׳שומר עמו ישראל לעד׳ ובין שמונה עשרה » (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: between the end of שומר עמו ישראל and the first word of the Amidah, one does not speak
Two interruptions that are not interruptions. « ומיהו מה שמכריז ש״צ ר״ח בין קדיש לתפלת ערבית לא הוי הפסק כיון שהוא צורך תפלה » (שו״ע או״ח רל״ו:ב); « וכן יכול לומר ברכו להוציא מי שלא שמע ולא הוי הפסק » (שו״ע או״ח רל״ו:ב). The Beit Yosef gives the source, in the name of the Rashba: « וכתב הרשב״א בתשובה שמה שמכריז ש״צ בין קדיש לתפלה דערבית ואומר ר״ח אין מוחין בידו שאין זה הפסק כיון שהוא צורך תפלה » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: what serves the prayer is not foreign to the prayer
How far the permission reaches. « ולאו דוקא לקרוא ולהכריז שהוא ר״ח שהוא דאורייתא או להכריז טל ומטר שאם יטעו צריך לחזור אלא אפילו להכריז על הנסים שפיר דמי » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:ז). summary: one might have thought only an announcement whose omission requires repetition is allowed; the Mishnah Berurah permits על הנסים too, whose omission requires nothing
And where it stops. « ודוקא במקום זה יכול להפסיק אבל כשהוא עומד בברכת ק״ש בין הפרקים אסור לו להכריז שום דבר » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:ז). summary: the leniency holds at this precise point — between redemption and the Amidah — and nowhere else within the blessings of the Shema
Why the evening only. « ר״ל דשם בהג״ה מבואר דדוקא בערבית מקילינן לזה אבל לא בשחרית » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:ט). summary: the Rama referred to siman 69; the Mishnah Berurah notes that the leniency there is written for Arvit and not for Shacharit
The rest follows the morning rule. « ונ״ל דבין הפרקי׳ דינן כמו בשחרית דדוק׳ בין גאול׳ לתפלה יש מקילין משום דתפלת ערבית רשות אבל בין ק״ש וברכותי׳ חובה לכ״ע » (מגן אברהם או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: within the blessings of the Shema the evening’s interruption rules are the morning’s; the difference lies only at the point of joining

Before being a text they are a story, which the Mishnah Berurah reports in the name of the Tur: « ומה שנוהגין להפסיק בפסוקים ויראו עינינו וקדיש לפי שבימים הראשונים היו בתי כנסיות שלהם בשדות והיו יראים להתאחר שם עד זמן תפלת ערבית ותקנו לומר פסוקים אלו שיש בהם י״ח אזכרות כנגד י״ח ברכות שיש בתפלת ערבית ונפטרין בקדיש » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:ה)
The Tur in his own words. « ומה שנוהגין להפסיק בפסוקים ויראו עינינו וקדיש לפי שבימים ראשונים היו בתי כנסיות שלהם בשדות והיו יראים להתאחר שם עד זמן תפלת ערבית ותיקנו לומר פסוקים אלו שיש בהם י״ח אזכרות כנגד י״ח ברכות שיש בתפלת ערבית ונפטרין בקדיש » (טור או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: the synagogues stood in the fields and people feared to linger there until nightfall; eighteen mentions of the Name, against the eighteen blessings, and they left after the Kaddish
The custom survived its reason. « ועתה שחזרו להתפלל ערבית בבתי כנסיות לא נתבטל מנהג הראשון ומ״מ אין להפסיק בדברים אחרים ויש מן הגדולים שנהגו שלא לאמרם » (טור או״ח סימן רל״ו); and the Mishnah Berurah copies it: « ועתה שחזרו להתפלל ערבית בבתי כנסיות לא נתבטל מנהג הראשון ומ״מ אין להפסיק בדברים אחרים ויש מן הגדולים שנהגו שלא לאמרם » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:ה). summary: the synagogues returned to the town but the custom was not abolished — while some of the great authorities did not say them at all
Why these verses do not cut. « דאותן פסוקים לא מקרי הפסק כיון דתקינו לאומרם הו״ל כגאולה אריכתא » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:ו). summary: the same argument as for Hashkivenu — what the Sages instituted at this point belongs to the redemption and lengthens it
Tosafot add a very human reason. « ואנו שאומרים יראו עינינו ופסוקים אחרים אחר השכיבנו הואיל והתקינו להו רבנן ה״ל גאולה אריכתא דתקינו לומר זה שבתוך כך יתפלל חבירו גם הוא ולא ילך מב״ה עד שיגמור כל אחד תפלתו » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: these verses gave the slower worshipper time to finish, so that nobody would leave the synagogue before the others
The Ri gives a third. « אבל הר״י נתן טעם למנהג שבתחלה שהיתה תפלה ערבית רשות היו אומרים אלו הפסוקים שיש בהם י״ח הזכרות כנגד י״ח ברכות וחותמין עליהם ואומרים קדיש ויוצאים ואח״כ אע״פ שקבעוה חובה נשאר הדבר כמו המנהג הראשון ולא הוי הפסקה בין גאולה לתפלה כיון שמתחילה אדעתא דהכי קבעוה חובה לא מיקרי הפסקה » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: while Arvit was still optional these verses stood in place of the prayer; once it was made obligatory the custom remained — and since it was there from the start, it does not count as an interruption
The Aruch HaShulchan unites them. « אך מיהו על כל פנים אחרי שנתפשטה תקנה זו נעשה תקנה קבועה, וכגאולה אריכתא דמי » (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: three explanations, one result — a custom that spread becomes a fixed enactment, and these verses are themselves full of redemption
Why they are not said on Shabbat and festivals. « ולכן בשבתות וימים טובים לא נהגו לומר אלו הפסוקים, מפני שאין מתפללים י״ח ברכות, וגם בהם לא היתה היראה כל כך, דשבת עצמו שומר את ישראל » (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: there are no eighteen blessings for them to stand in for, and the fear of the night did not weigh the same. The Kaddish, however, remained everywhere: « ולכן אפילו הספרדים שאין אומרים פסוקים אלו, מכל מקום קדיש אומרים, מפני שקדיש הוה עיקר הגאולה » (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רל״ו)
The Rama’s gloss. « ראיתי מדקדקים נהגו לעמוד כשאומרים הי״ח פסוקים של ברוך ה׳ לעולם וכו׳ ומנהג יפה הוא כי נתקנו במקום תפלת י״ח וע״כ ראוי לעמוד בהן כמו בתפלה » (שו״ע או״ח רל״ו:ב). summary: since these verses took the place of the Amidah, one stands for them as for it
And the contrary view, which is that of many. « והרבה אחרונים כתבו דיותר טוב שלא לעמוד כדי להראות שאין רוצה לצאת בזה ידי חובת תפלת י״ח אך כשמתפלל עם הצבור וקורא אח״כ ק״ש וברכותיה אז יוכל לומר ברוך ה׳ וכו׳ מעומד » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:י); the Aruch HaShulchan likewise: « אבל רבים חולקים וסבירא ליה דיותר טוב לישב, שלא יאמרו שבזה יוצאים ידי תפלת שמונה עשרה » (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: sitting says precisely that one does not claim to discharge the Amidah through them — except for one who has already prayed with the congregation and reads the Shema afterwards
The Taz’s reasoning. « לע״ד נראה שהאומרם במיושב שפיר דמי דאם האומרם מעומד נתכוין שיהיה זה במקום י״ח א״כ יצא ידי תפלת ערבית והיאך יתפלל אחר כך ערבית שנית » (ט״ז או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: if standing means “this stands in for the Amidah”, one would have discharged it — and could no longer pray afterwards; sitting removes the contradiction
Counting the Names. « שיש לומר הושיענו אלהי ישענו והוא פסוק בדברי הימים ולא יאמר הושיענו ה׳ אלהי ישענו דא״כ הוא מוסיף על י״ח אזכרות » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:י). summary: the number of mentions of the Name is the point of the passage; adding one distorts it
Where one may pause. « ויראה לי דבי״ח פסוקים אלו בין פסוק לפסוק הוי כבין הפרקים, רק מן ׳יראו עינינו׳ עד גמר הברכה הוי כאמצע הפרק » (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: between one verse and the next is like between the paragraphs; from יראו עינינו to the seal is like the middle of a paragraph

D. תפלה בציבור — when the congregation comes before the join

תְּפִלָּה בְּצִבּוּרprayer with the congregation. Two values collide, and the Mishnah Berurah says which prevails: « דתפלת הצבור עדיפא ממסמך גאולה לתפלה דערבית » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:יב)

Seif 3: if he found a congregation that has already read the Shema and is about to stand for the Amidah, let him pray with them, and afterwards he will read the Shema with its blessings.
The source of the seif. « ונראה שמי שנכנס לב״ה ומצא ציבור שקראו את שמע ורוצה לעמוד בתפלה יתפלל עמהם ואח״כ יקרא את שמע עם ברכותיה ואע״פ שאינו סומך גאולה לתפלה מוטב שיתפלל עם הציבור ולא יסמוך משיסמוך ויתפלל ביחיד » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: better to pray with the congregation without joining than to join and pray alone
A precedent from the Land of Israel. « בא״י עושים כן מתפללין של ערבית ואח״כ קורין את שמע בזמנה ולא איכפת להו למיסמך גאולה של ערבית לתפלה של ערבית » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: there they would pray Arvit and then read the Shema at its time without concern for the join — proof that the join yields to something stronger
The Taz in one line. « הטעם דטפי עדיף להתפלל עם הצבור ממה שיסמוך גאולה לתפילה של ערבית » (ט״ז או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: that is the reason of the seif, plainly said
But the permission has a condition. « אבל כ״ז דוקא כשהוא משער שלא יוכל להשיג אח״כ מנין להתפלל עמהם דאל״ה אין לו לבטל מצות סמיכת גאולה לתפלה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:יב). summary: if another minyan will be within reach later, he does not give up the join — the leniency is only for one who would otherwise have no congregation at all
A third path, when time allows. « ואם הם עוסקים עדיין בברכות ק״ש והוא משער שעד שיגיעו הצבור לשמ״ע יוכל לומר ק״ש וברכותיה עד שומר עמו ישראל לעד יעשה כן וידלג ברוך ה׳ לעולם וכו׳ ויתפלל שמ״ע עם הצבור דאותן הפסוקים אינן אלא מנהג ויש גדולים שסוברים שאין לאומרו ולכן מוטב לדלג כדי לקיים תפלה בצבור עם סמיכת גאולה לתפלה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:יא). summary: if he can reach שומר עמו ישראל לעד before the congregation rises, he skips the eighteen verses — which are only a custom — and gains both the congregation and the join
The Magen Avraham had proposed it. « ונ״ל דאם יש שהות יקרא ק״ש וברכותיה וידלג ברוך ה׳ לעולם וגו׳ וגם יראו עינינו כדי להתפלל עם הציבור דאינה אלא מנהג » (מגן אברהם או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: the same conduct with the same motive — these verses are a custom, communal prayer is a value
And they are not made up afterwards. « ואין צריך לאומרם אחר כך, דלא נתקנו אלא אחר ברכות קריאת שמע ולא בפני עצמן » (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: these verses belong only where they stand; taken out of place they have nothing left to lengthen
The case of one who has not yet prayed Minchah. « עוד כתבו במקומות שמקדימין להתפלל ערבית מבע״י ובא לבהכ״נ בשעה שמתחילין ברכו והוא לא התפלל מנחה יתפלל מנחה בעוד שהם קורין ק״ש וברכותיה ואח״כ יתפלל ערבית עם הצבור ואח״כ יקרא ק״ש וברכותיה בלילה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:יא). summary: where Arvit is prayed before nightfall, he says Minchah while the congregation reads the Shema, prays Arvit with them, and reads the Shema with its blessings at night

E. אמן אחר ברכת עצמו — the amen one answers to oneself

אָמֵן אַחַר בִּרְכַּת עַצְמוֹamen after one’s own blessing. The general rule is the Rambam’s: « כָּל הָעוֹנֶה אָמֵן אַחַר בִּרְכוֹתָיו הֲרֵי זֶה מְגֻנֶּה.

Seif 4: after Shomer amo Yisrael one says amen after one’s own blessing; and one should not answer amen after the blessing of HaMelekh biKhvodo. Rama’s gloss: and see above siman 215.
Why this one and not the other. « שהוא סיום ברכת ק״ש ואזיל המחבר לטעמיה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:יג). summary: שומר עמו ישראל closes the series of the Shema’s blessings; the amen marks an ending
And HaMelekh biKhvodo stands alone. « כי היא אינה שייך לברכת ק״ש והויא ככל ברכה מיוחדת שאין עונה אמן אחר ברכת עצמו » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:יד). summary: it does not belong to the blessings of the Shema; it is a single blessing, and after a single blessing one does not answer amen to oneself
The Beit Yosef’s comparison. « ונראה מדבריו דאינו עונה אמן אחר המלך בכבודו משום דסיום הברכות הוא בשומר את עמו ישראל דומיא דעונה אמן אחר בונה ירושלים אע״פ שיש אחריה ברכת הטוב והמטיב » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: just as in the Grace after Meals one answers amen after בונה ירושלים and not after הטוב והמטיב, so here one answers after the fourth blessing and not after the one that follows it
An intention to watch in the seal. « באומרו תמיד ימלוך עלינו לא יהיה כונתו בלשון בקשה שמתפלל שימלוך עלינו דהיינו לקרב הגאולה שאין תפלה בחתימת הברכה אלא יהיה כונתו בלשון שבח שהקב״ה ימלוך לעולם » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:טו). summary: תמיד ימלוך עלינו must be said as praise and not as a request — for one does not petition within the seal of a blessing
The Magen Avraham, the source of this remark. « וכתבו הג״מ שא״ל ימלוך לשון בקשה שאין תפלה בחתימת הברכה וצ״ל פי׳ שבח שהקב״ה ימלוך לעולם » (מגן אברהם או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: that is the original formulation, which the Mishnah Berurah took over
The Rama’s cross-reference, and what it changes. « ר״ל ששם כתב הרמ״א שבמדינותינו אין נוהגין לענות אחר ברכת עצמו אפילו אחר ברכת שומר עמו ישראל לעד » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:טז). summary: the seif states the Mehaber’s position; the Rama refers to siman 215, where he wrote that the custom of his lands is not to answer amen to oneself at all
What siman 215 in fact says.
The custom as the Aruch HaShulchan describes it. « אבל כבר נתבאר שם דאנחנו אין נוהגין כלל לענות ׳אמן׳ אחר ברכת עצמו, לבד בברכת המזון ב׳בונה ירושלים׳ » (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: in his communities the only amen one answers to oneself is that of בונה ירושלים. For practice, follow your Rav.
The siman in one sentence: the Sages wanted redemption to touch the evening prayer, and they themselves set blessings between the two — the whole siman explains why what they instituted does not cut, and what would.

Practical cases

Case 1 — I arrive as the congregation is about to rise for the Amidah

Situation: I enter the synagogue; the congregation has already read the Shema and is about to stand for the evening Amidah.
Practice: Seif 3 rules: « מצא צבור שקראו קריאת שמע ורוצים לעמוד בתפלה יתפלל עמהם ואח״כ יקרא ק״ש עם ברכותיה » (שו״ע או״ח רל״ו:ג). The reason is this: « דתפלת הצבור עדיפא ממסמך גאולה לתפלה דערבית » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:יב). But the Mishnah Berurah sets a condition: « אבל כ״ז דוקא כשהוא משער שלא יוכל להשיג אח״כ מנין להתפלל עמהם דאל״ה אין לו לבטל מצות סמיכת גאולה לתפלה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:יב). And if time allows there is something better: « ואם הם עוסקים עדיין בברכות ק״ש והוא משער שעד שיגיעו הצבור לשמ״ע יוכל לומר ק״ש וברכותיה עד שומר עמו ישראל לעד יעשה כן וידלג ברוך ה׳ לעולם וכו׳ ויתפלל שמ״ע עם הצבור דאותן הפסוקים אינן אלא מנהג ויש גדולים שסוברים שאין לאומרו ולכן מוטב לדלג כדי לקיים תפלה בצבור עם סמיכת גאולה לתפלה » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:יא). summary: if another minyan will come, keep the join; if not, pray with them and read afterwards. For practice, follow your Rav.

Case 2 — The reader announces Rosh Chodesh just before the Amidah

Situation: between the Kaddish and the evening Amidah the reader reminds everyone to say יעלה ויבא. Is that not an interruption?
Practice: The Mehaber permits it expressly: « ומיהו מה שמכריז ש״צ ר״ח בין קדיש לתפלת ערבית לא הוי הפסק כיון שהוא צורך תפלה » (שו״ע או״ח רל״ו:ב). The Beit Yosef gives the source in the name of the Rashba: « וכתב הרשב״א בתשובה שמה שמכריז ש״צ בין קדיש לתפלה דערבית ואומר ר״ח אין מוחין בידו שאין זה הפסק כיון שהוא צורך תפלה » (בית יוסף או״ח סימן רל״ו). The Mishnah Berurah broadens it further: « ולאו דוקא לקרוא ולהכריז שהוא ר״ח שהוא דאורייתא או להכריז טל ומטר שאם יטעו צריך לחזור אלא אפילו להכריז על הנסים שפיר דמי » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:ז); but immediately closes it: « ודוקא במקום זה יכול להפסיק אבל כשהוא עומד בברכת ק״ש בין הפרקים אסור לו להכריז שום דבר » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:ז). The same holds for the ברכו said for a latecomer: « וכן יכול לומר ברכו להוציא מי שלא שמע ולא הוי הפסק » (שו״ע או״ח רל״ו:ב). summary: the test is not silence but service to the prayer itself. For practice, follow your Rav.

Case 3 — Standing or seated for ברוך ה׳ לעולם?

Situation: in my synagogue some stand for the eighteen verses and others remain seated.
But many Acharonim prefer the opposite: « והרבה אחרונים כתבו דיותר טוב שלא לעמוד כדי להראות שאין רוצה לצאת בזה ידי חובת תפלת י״ח אך כשמתפלל עם הצבור וקורא אח״כ ק״ש וברכותיה אז יוכל לומר ברוך ה׳ וכו׳ מעומד » (משנה ברורה, מ״ב רל״ו:י); and the Aruch HaShulchan says the same: « אבל רבים חולקים וסבירא ליה דיותר טוב לישב, שלא יאמרו שבזה יוצאים ידי תפלת שמונה עשרה » (ערוך השלחן או״ח סימן רל״ו). The Taz supplies the reasoning: « לע״ד נראה שהאומרם במיושב שפיר דמי דאם האומרם מעומד נתכוין שיהיה זה במקום י״ח א״כ יצא ידי תפלת ערבית והיאך יתפלל אחר כך ערבית שנית » (ט״ז או״ח סימן רל״ו). summary: the two customs say the same thing in two ways — one honours the standing of these verses, the other refuses to let them replace the Amidah. For practice, follow your Rav and your community’s custom.

Comprehension questions

Comprehension questions:
  1. What are the four blessings of the evening, and which of them has no morning counterpart (מ״ב רל״ו:ב-ג)?
  2. Why does השכיבנו not break the join of redemption to prayer (ברכות ד׳ ע״ב)?
  3. Which announcements are permitted between redemption and the Amidah, and why
  4. Where do the eighteen verses come from, and why are they still said (מ״ב רל״ו:ה)?
  5. After which blessing does one answer amen to oneself, and what does the Rama say about it
