1. The Central Axiom

Universal principle of Siman ז׳:

This siman extends siman 6: the blessing אשר יצר is not reserved for the morning — it accompanies the Jew all day long. Each time the body does its work, one blesses אשר יצר, but without על נטילת ידים: the latter is said only in the morning. If one wishes to wash the hands during the day, it is for cleanliness (נקיות) or for preparation for prayer (הכון לקראת אלהיך), not out of an obligation of the blessing. The siman also teaches that there is no minimum measure: even for a single drop one blesses — out of gratitude (חייב להודות) for the proper functioning of the body.
💡 The universal key: to recognize, throughout the day, that the body functions as it should. חייב להודות — one is bound to give thanks.
  • אשר יצר כל היום → at each need, without על נטילת ידים
  • נקיות / הכון → one washes the hands for cleanliness or to prepare for prayer
  • הסיח דעתו → turned away then reconsidered: twice asher yatzar
  • אין שיעור → even a single drop: one blesses, out of gratitude

2. Master table of the 4 seifim

אשר יצר כל היום
All day
Whenever one relieves oneself, whether small or great, one blesses אשר יצר and not על נטילת ידים, even if one wishes to study or pray at once. Rama: if the hands were soiled and one wiped them (קינוח), one does not say על נטילת ידים. בלי על נטילת ידים
נקיות / הכון
Washing the hands
Although one must say אשר יצר, one is not required to wash the hands — except for cleanliness (נקיות) or for preparation for prayer (הכון). הכון לקראת אלהיך
הסיח דעתו
Reconsidered
Finished, turned away (detached his thought), then reconsidered and returned: he blesses twice אשר יצר — each time a distinct act. ב' פעמים
אין שיעור
Even a single drop
There is no minimum measure: even for a single drop one is bound to bless, for if the orifice were blocked from releasing that drop it would be painful — חייב להודות, one must give thanks. חייב להודות

⚖ The structure of the siman at a glance

The 4 seifim of the Mechaber unfold אשר יצר over time: (1) all day — without על נטילת ידים; (2) washing the hands — only for נקיות or הכון; (3) הסיח דעתו — one who reconsiders blesses twice; (4) אין שיעור — even a single drop, out of gratitude. The Shulchan Aruch HaRav (the Alter Rebbe) unfolds this siman into 7 seifim: why על נטילת ידים is said only in the morning (בריה חדשה, link with siman 4), the meaning of הכון לקראת אלהיך (washing before pronouncing the Name even without strict obligation), and the ספק of הסיח דעתו.

3. Asher Yatzar — all day

Q: What does one bless after each occasion, and what does one not bless?
🟢 אשר יצר, always — At each need, small or great, one says אשר יצר — the blessing of the health of the body.
🔴 על נטילת ידים, no — One does not say על נטילת ידים during the day, even if one wishes to study or pray at once: this blessing belongs to the morning.
🟢 Rama — קינוח — If the hands were soiled and one wiped them, one does not say על נטילת ידים (Smag).

Why is על נטילת ידים said only in the morning? Because on waking man is like a new creature (בריה חדשה, link with siman 4): it is this renewal that calls for the netila and its blessing. During the day, the body continues to function, and the gratitude remains — hence אשר יצר each time —, but there is no new "renewal" that would warrant על נטילת ידים. For the details of the nossei kelim (Beit Yossef, Tour, Magen Avraham, Mishna Berura), see Level 2.

4. Washing the hands — נקיות and הכון

Q: Must one wash the hands after relieving oneself during the day?
🟢 Not out of an obligation of the blessing — To say אשר יצר, one need not wash the hands.
🟢 For נקיות — One washes them for cleanliness, for the dignity of the body and of prayer.
🟢 For הכון — And to prepare oneself to stand before God: הכון לקראת אלהיך ישראל (Amos 4:12).

The principle of preparation

The seif distinguishes two registers. The blessing אשר יצר does not require the netila of the hands. But one nonetheless washes the hands for two independent reasons: cleanliness (נקיות) and preparation for prayer (הכון). The Shulchan Aruch HaRav develops this point: washing the hands before pronouncing the Name or studying, even without strict obligation — this is הכון לקראת אלהיך. The exact status (חובה / נכון / מידת חסידות) is treated in Level 4.

5. הסיח דעתו — blessing twice

Q: Finished, then reconsidered and returned — how many blessings?
🟢 The first time — He relieved himself and detached his thought (הסיח דעתו), considering himself finished.
🟢 Reconsidered — Then נמלך, he returned and began again.
🔴 Two blessings — He blesses ב' פעמים אשר יצר: each episode, separated by the detachment of thought, is a distinct act calling for its own blessing.
📚 The yesod of seif 3: what separates the two blessings is not the time elapsed but the הסיח דעתו — having considered the matter closed. Once the thought is detached, the return is a new act. To be compared with the ספק of siman 4 (the status of sleep and waking), treated in Level 4.

6. אין שיעור — even a single drop

Q: Is there a minimum measure for being bound to bless?
🟢 אין שיעור — There is no minimum measure.
🟢 Even a single dropאפילו לטפה אחת חייב לברך: even for a single drop, one is bound to bless.
🟢 The reasoning — For if the orifice were blocked from releasing that drop it would be painful; the proper functioning, however small, calls for gratitude.
🔴 חייב להודות — One must give thanks: asher yatzar is, at its root, a blessing of gratitude for the health of the body.

The yesod of gratitude

The fourth seif reveals the deep meaning of the entire blessing: it is not a formula tied to a "measure" but an act of hodaa (thanksgiving). חייב להודות — man is bound to give thanks for the very fact that his body releases what it must, be it a single drop. This is the direct extension of the wonder of siman 6 (אשר יצר את האדם בחכמה): the wisdom of creation is verified at every instant, and every instant calls for gratitude.

7. Golden rules — Memory Aid

The 5 golden rules of Siman ז׳
  • אשר יצר כל היום — at each need, all day, even before studying or praying.
  • No על נטילת ידים — during the day; this blessing belongs to the morning (בריה חדשה).
  • נקיות / הכון — one washes the hands for cleanliness or to prepare for prayer, not out of an obligation of the blessing.
  • הסיח דעתו — one who turned away then reconsidered blesses twice.
  • אין שיעור — even a single drop: one blesses, חייב להודות.

8. Mnemonic — Memory Aid

Acrostic: D-W-R-D — the 4 seifim of Siman ז׳
  • Day (אשר יצר כל היום) — always bless, without על נטילת ידים.
  • Wash the hands (נקיות / הכון) — for cleanliness or preparation.
  • Reconsider (הסיח דעתו) — reconsidered: two blessings.
  • Drop (אין שיעור) — even a single drop: one blesses, out of gratitude.
3 foundational principles to memorize:
  • אשר יצר כל היום — without על נטילת ידים
  • הכון לקראת אלהיך — washing to prepare for prayer
  • חייב להודות — even a single drop calls for gratitude

9. Pitfalls to Avoid

❌ Pitfall 1: Saying על נטילת ידים after each occasion of the day.
→ The seif: one blesses אשר יצר alone; על נטילת ידים belongs to the morning, even if one wishes to study or pray at once.
❌ Pitfall 2: Believing that one must necessarily wash the hands in order to say אשר יצר.
→ The seif: one need not wash the hands for the blessing; one does so for נקיות or for הכון.
❌ Pitfall 3: Thinking that after reconsidering, a single blessing suffices.
→ The seif: one who had הסיח דעתו then reconsidered blesses ב' פעמים — two distinct acts.
❌ Pitfall 4: Believing that a certain measure is needed to be bound to bless.
→ The seif: אין שיעור — even for a single drop one blesses, חייב להודות.
❌ Pitfall 5: Seeing in אשר יצר a formula tied to "measure," not to gratitude.
→ The seif: the motive is hodaa — to give thanks for the proper functioning of the body, however small (SA HaRav, 7 seifim).
