1. The Central Axiom

Universal principle of Siman ח׳:

This is the beginning of the laws of ציצית and its enveloping (עטיפתו). One wraps oneself in the talit gadol standing (מעומד) and blesses להתעטף בציצית; on the talit katan, which one puts on without a true עיטוף, the custom is to bless על מצות ציצית (וכן נוהגין). Before blessing, one checks the threads (יעיין בחוטי הציצית) so as not to bless in vain. And the whole mitzva tends toward a single end — the kavana: to wrap oneself in order to remember all the mitzvot, למען תזכרו. The blessing follows the continuity of intention: a הפסק (walking, פשיטה, נפילה) requires re-blessing.
💡 The universal key: to be surrounded by mitzvaמסובב במצות — and to remain so with awareness. The talit is not a garment, it is a reminder worn upon oneself.
  • עיטוף + להתעטף → talit gadol: standing, one wraps oneself and blesses « להתעטף בציצית »
  • על מצות ציצית → talit katan: one puts it on (לבישה), and such is the custom for this blessing
  • בדיקה + כוונה → check the threads first; aim for « למען תזכרו »
  • הפסק → walking, פשיטה or full נפילה: one re-blesses

2. Master table of the 17 seifim

The 17 seifim of the Mechaber group naturally into five families: (A) the עיטוף and the blessing, (B) talit gadol vs talit katan, (C) the kavana and the בדיקה, (D) the rules of הפסק and כוונה (one or several blessings), (E) talit fallen · removed · הלן.

FamilySeifHeart of the halakhaMarker
A. עיטוף
and blessing
One wraps oneself in the ציצית and blesses standing (יתעטף בציצית ויברך מעומד). מעומד
Order of the עיטוף, as people cover themselves with their garment; it is fitting to cover the head too with the talit. יכסה ראשו
B. Gadol
vs katan
The talit katan: one fulfills the mitzva even without עיטוף; it is good to place it on the head and wrap oneself for the time of walking 4 amot, then lower it. כדי הילוך ד׳ אמות
Bring 2 tsitsiyot in front and 2 behind, so as to be surrounded by mitzva (מסובב במצות). מסובב במצות
A. The blessing
(cont.)
One blesses להתעטף בציצית; if several wrap themselves at once: all bless, or one blesses and the others answer amen. להתעטף בציצית
On the talit katan: one may bless « להתעטף »; Rama: י״א על מצות ציצית, and such is the custom (וכן נוהגין ואין לשנות). על מצות ציצית
C. Kavana
and בדיקה
Separate the threads of the ציצית one from another (להפריד חוטי הציצית). להפריד החוטים
Kavana: He commanded us to wrap ourselves in order to remember all His mitzvot and to perform them (כדי שנזכור כל מצותיו). למען תזכרו
Before blessing, check the threads (יעיין בחוטי הציצית) — that they are valid — so as not to bless in vain (לבטלה). שלא יברך לבטלה
B. Katan
(custom)
Talit katan put on with unclean hands → without a blessing; then, hands washed, משמוש (touch the ציצית) and bless — or by donning another talit one includes it. ימשמש ויברך
The עיקר of the mitzva of the talit katan: to wear it over one's clothes so as to see it always and remember the mitzvot (על בגדיו… שתמיד יראהו). על בגדיו
D. הפסק
and כוונה
Several four-cornered garments: without הפסק and with דעת from the start → a single blessing; with הפסק (or without initial kavana) → bless on each. Rama: removing the 1st before the 2nd → re-bless. ברכה אחת / כל אחת
Talit katan at home then talit gadol at the synagogue: the walking (הליכה) is a הפסק → re-bless; if he prays at home without הפסק or speech, and with initial kavana → do not re-bless. הליכה חשיבה הפסק
E. Fallen,
removed, הלן
If he removed his talit (פשט), even intending to return → re-bless. Rama: י״א one does not re-bless if דעתו לחזור, and especially if the talit katan remains on him (והכי נוהגין; see siman 25). פשט טליתו
Talit fallen unintentionally: if it fell entirely (נפלה כולה) → re-bless; fallen only in part (even most) → do not re-bless. נפלה כולה
הלן בטליתו: one who slept in his talit at night blesses in the morning, even without having removed it; it is good to touch it (משמוש) during the blessing. Likewise one who dons it before daybreak. הלן בטליתו
F. Closing One who covered himself with a garment obligated in ציצית and did not place threads on it has nullified the mitzva of ציצית (ביטל מצות ציצית). ביטל מצות ציצית

⚖ The structure of the siman at a glance

The 17 seifim of the Mechaber open the laws of ציצית: (A) the עיטוף standing and its blessing; (B) talit gadol (עיטוף) vs talit katan (לבישה); (C) the בדיקה of the threads and the kavana « למען תזכרו »; (D) the rules of הפסק and כוונה (one or several blessings); (E) talit fallen · removed · הלן, and the closing on the nullification of the mitzva. The Shulchan Aruch HaRav (the Alter Rebbe) unfolds this siman into 30 seifim: what the עיטוף is, the two nossa'ot of the blessing, the kavana, the fine rules of הפסק between garments, and the בדיקת הציצית.

3. The עיטוף and the blessing — standing, « להתעטף »

Q: How does one wrap oneself in the talit gadol and what does one bless?
🟢 Standing — One wraps oneself in the ציצית and blesses מעומד (seif 1).
🟢 The order of the עיטוף — As people cover themselves with their garment; it is fitting to cover the head too with the talit (seif 2).
🟢 « להתעטף בציצית » — The blessing of the talit gadol; if several wrap themselves at once, all bless or one blesses and the others answer amen (seif 5).
🟢 « מסובב במצות » — Bring 2 tsitsiyot in front and 2 behind, so as to be surrounded by mitzva (seif 4).

The meaning of the עיטוף

The siman opens on the gesture: not « to put on » but to wrap oneself. The עיטוף — to cover oneself with the cloth, head included — is the full fulfillment of the mitzva, which is why one does it standing, with the dignity of an act. The blessing להתעטף בציצית names exactly this gesture: to wrap oneself. For the details of the nossei kelim (Beit Yossef, Tour, Magen Avraham, Mishna Berura), see Level 2.

4. Talit gadol vs talit katan — two nossa'ot

Q: Talit gadol and talit katan — same gesture, same blessing?
🟢 Talit gadol — עיטוף — One wraps oneself; blessing להתעטף בציצית.
🟢 Talit katan — לבישה — One puts it on (without a true עיטוף) and fulfills the mitzva; it is good to place it on the head and wrap oneself for 4 amot, then lower it (seif 3).
🔴 Its blessing — One may bless « להתעטף », but Rama: י״א על מצות ציצית, and such is the custom (וכן נוהגין ואין לשנות, seif 6).
🟢 The עיקר of its practice — To wear it over one's clothes so as to see it always and remember (seif 11).
📚 The yesod of seifim 3 and 6: the talit katan has no עיטוף — one puts it on. Hence two consequences: (1) the semblance of עיטוף over 4 amot, to bring its form closer to that of the talit gadol; (2) the blessing of practice על מצות ציצית, which bears on the fulfillment of the mitzva rather than on the gesture of wrapping. The exact status (machloket Mechaber / Rama, וכן נוהגין) is treated in Level 4.

5. Kavana and בדיקה — « למען תזכרו »

Q: What does one aim for, and what does one check before blessing?
🟢 Separate the threads — One detaches the threads of the ציצית one from another (seif 7).
🟢 Check — בדיקה — Before blessing, one examines the threads (יעיין בחוטי הציצית) so that they be valid — so as not to bless לבטלה (seif 9).
🟢 The kavana — To aim that God commanded us to wrap ourselves in order to remember all His mitzvot and to perform them (seif 8).

The tsitsit as a reminder

The heart of the siman is not the cloth but what it makes one see. The Torah says it: וראיתם אותו וזכרתם… למען תזכרו (Bamidbar 15:39). The tsitsit is a reminder worn upon oneself: one looks, one remembers, one acts. The בדיקה of the threads is therefore no formality — it is the condition for the reminder to be valid and the blessing correct. The yesod (the tsitsit as a מקיף that surrounds and guards) is developed in Level 4 (the path of Chabad to the attested principle; refer to the Rav).

6. הפסק and כוונה — when to re-bless

Q: Several talitot or several garments — how many blessings?
🟢 A single blessing — Several four-cornered garments, donned without הפסק and with דעת from the start on all of them (seif 12).
🔴 Bless on each — If there is a הפסק between them, or no initial kavana on the whole (this is like a הפסק) — Rama: or if he removed the first before the second (seif 12).
🔴 Walking = הפסק — Talit katan at home then talit gadol at the synagogue: the הליכה is a הפסק → re-bless; but if he prays at home without הפסק or speech → do not re-bless (seif 13).
📚 The yesod of seifim 12-13: what decides one blessing or several are two joint conditions: the continuity of intention (דעתו מתחילה) and the absence of הפסק. A diversion (walking, speech, removing the garment) breaks the first blessing and calls for a new one. To be compared with siman 25 (the continuity of the blessing of the tefillin).

7. Fallen, removed, הלן — re-blessing

Q: Talit removed, fallen, or kept all night — does one re-bless?
🟢 Removed (פשט) — Even intending to return: re-bless (seif 14). Rama: י״א one does not re-bless if דעתו לחזור, especially if the talit katan remains on him.
🟢 Fallen (נפילה) — Fallen entirely unintentionally → re-bless; fallen in part (even most) → do not re-bless (seif 15).
🟢 הלן בטליתו — Slept in it: bless in the morning, even without having removed it; it is good to touch it during the blessing (seif 16).

The principle of the break

Three cases, one logic: the blessing holds as long as the talit actually remains upon oneself with intention. To remove it deliberately, to let it fall entirely — there is a break (according to the opinions and the retention of the talit katan). But the night passed wrapped does not break the wearing: what reopens the blessing then is the morning (the renewal of the day), not a new gesture. For the precise case (דעתו לחזור, talit katan, נפלה רובה), refer to the Rav (Level 4) and to siman 25.

8. Golden rules — Memory Aid

The 7 golden rules of Siman ח׳
  • עיטוף standing — talit gadol: one wraps oneself (head included) and blesses מעומד.
  • « להתעטף בציצית » — the blessing of the talit gadol; « על מצות ציצית » for the talit katan (וכן נוהגין).
  • מסובב במצות — 2 tsitsiyot in front, 2 behind; to be surrounded by mitzva.
  • בדיקה before — check the threads so as not to bless לבטלה.
  • « למען תזכרו » — the kavana: to wrap oneself in order to remember the mitzvot.
  • הפסק → re-bless — walking, speech, פשיטה, full נפילה break the blessing.
  • הלן → in the morning — one who slept in his talit blesses on rising; משמוש during the blessing.

9. Mnemonic — Memory Aid

Acrostic: E-T-K-H-F — the five families of Siman ח׳
  • Enveloping (עיטוף) — standing, « להתעטף », head covered, מסובב במצות.
  • Two talitot — gadol (עיטוף) vs katan (לבישה, « על מצות ציצית »).
  • Kavana & בדיקה — check the threads, aim for « למען תזכרו ».
  • Hefsek (הפסק) — one or several blessings according to דעת and break.
  • Fallen / removed / הלן — when to re-bless, and to bless in the morning.
3 foundational formulas to memorize:
  • להתעטף בציצית — talit gadol, standing
  • על מצות ציצית — talit katan (the custom)
  • למען תזכרו את כל מצותי — the kavana of the whole mitzva

10. Pitfalls to Avoid

❌ Pitfall 1: Blessing the talit gadol seated, in haste.
→ The seif: one wraps oneself and blesses מעומד — standing —, and it is fitting to cover the head too with the talit.
❌ Pitfall 2: Saying « להתעטף בציצית » on the talit katan « because it is the same blessing ».
→ The seif: Rama — the custom is to bless על מצות ציצית on the talit katan (וכן נוהגין ואין לשנות).
❌ Pitfall 3: Blessing without looking at the threads.
→ The seif: before blessing, יעיין בחוטי הציצית — check that they are valid, so as not to bless לבטלה.
❌ Pitfall 4: Believing one always re-blesses anew each time one puts the talit back on.
→ The seif: everything depends on the הפסק and the כוונה — without a break and with initial דעת, a single blessing suffices (seif 12-13).
❌ Pitfall 5: Re-blessing for a talit fallen only in part, or forgetting the morning of the הלן.
→ The seif: fallen partially (even most) → one does not re-bless; but הלן בטליתו blesses in the morning (seifim 15-16).
