This siman teaches the preparations and cleanliness required before the תפלה : one who needs to relieve himself (נצרך לנקביו) אל יתפלל — his prayer is תועבה and he must repeat it, per the שיעור הילוך פרסה ; he does not interrupt the עמידה but may step aside during the ק״ש (בל תשקצו) ; he removes כיחו וניעו ; he washes his hands (פרסה / מיל, or נקיון בעפר) ; he does not touch a מקום מטונף ; he waits ד׳ אמות after urinating or spitting ; and it is good to give צדקה. Hebrew text, fluent English translation and explanation of the י׳ seifim, with a section of practical cases.

Our Sages taught (ברכות כ״ג.): הנצרך לנקביו אל יתפלל, ואם התפלל תפלתו תועבה — one who needs to relieve himself should not pray, and if he prayed his prayer is an abomination. Its basis is the verse «הכון לקראת אלהיך ישראל» (עמוס ד׳) : to prepare oneself, with a clean body, to stand before G-d. The siman develops this preparation — the cleanliness of the body, washing the hands, and removing soiling matter. We study here at the level of principle ; for personal conduct, one refers to the ruling of the Rav.

A. Cleanliness and preparations before prayer — the י׳ seifim

הֲכָנוֹת לַתְּפִלָּה — preparations for prayer — standing before G-d requires a clean body (הכון לקראת אלהיך ישראל). Hence three axes: not to pray with a body pressed by its needs (נצרך לנקביו) nor soiled (בל תשקצו) ; to wash the hands and remove every מקום מטונף or distraction (כיחו וניעו) ; and to keep a gap of ד׳ אמות after urinating or spitting, the prayer still lingering on the lips.

Séif 1 — הנצרך לנקביו: the pressing need

Séif 1: one who needs to relieve himself should not pray ; and if he prayed, his prayer is an abomination (תועבה) and he must pray again. This refers to one who cannot hold himself for the time it takes to walk a parasa (שיעור הילוך פרסה) ; but if he can hold himself for that time, he has fulfilled his duty after the fact (יצא בדיעבד). From the outset (לכתחלה), he should not pray until he has examined himself well beforehand. Rem"a: as long as his body is soiled by his needs, it is forbidden to him even for matters of Torah.
Two levels. Cannot hold himself for a parasa — his prayer is תועבה and he repeats it. Can hold himself that long — לכתחילה he relieves himself first, but בדיעבד יצא. The principle: one does not stand before G-d with a pressed body.

Séif 2 — the need arising during prayer (בל תשקצו)

Séif 2: if the urge arises in the middle of his עמידה, he holds himself until he finishes and does not interrupt ; and if it is during the ק״ש and its blessings, whether a minor or a major need, he reads as usual. Rem"a: and this only if he does not feel it so strongly that there is « בל תשקצו » ; otherwise, it is better to interrupt. And if he wishes to step aside and urinate, he may.
In the middle of the עמידה, one does not interrupt and holds himself. In the ק״ש and its blessings he continues כדרכו — unless the urge is so strong that there is בל תשקצו (« do not make your persons abominable ») ; then it is better to step aside.

Séif 3 — הסרת כיחו וניעו: removing what distracts

Séif 3: one must, before prayer, remove his phlegm (כיחו), his mucus (וניעו), and anything that might distract him (כל דבר הטורדו).
Before beginning, one removes every physical distraction — phlegm, mucus, discomfort — so as to pray without distraction, the body in order.

Séif 4 — רחיצת ידים: washing the hands with water

Séif 4: one must wash his hands with water if he has it ; and if not, he must go after it up to a parasa. This is when he is traveling on the road and the water is ahead of him ; but if he must go back to the water, he goes back up to a mil, beyond a mil he does not go back. And if he fears that the time of prayer will pass, he cleans his hands on a rock, in dirt, or with anything that cleanses.
Water first. Without water: one seeks it עד פרסה when it is ahead of him, but only עד מיל if he must go back. And if time presses — a נקיון on a rock or in dirt suffices.

Séif 5 — הסח הדעת: distraction after the morning washing

Séif 5: if he washed his hands in the morning and then got distracted (הסיח דעתו), they require a washing for prayer if he has water — even though he knows of no dirt on them — and he does not recite a berakha. And if he has no water readily available, he need not go back and wash. Rem"a: and even if his hands were dirty and he washes them for prayer, he does not recite a berakha.
After a distraction (הסח הדעת), one re-washes the hands for prayer if there is water — without a berakha. Without water at hand, he need not go back for it.

Séif 6 — touching a מקום מטונף during the עמידה

Séif 6: one who is standing in prayer (עמידה) and recalls that he touched a soiled place (מקום מטונף) — it suffices to cleanse with dirt or pebbles, or to rub his hands on the wall.
In the midst of the עמידה, where one cannot move away, a simple cleansing (dirt, pebbles, rubbing on the wall) suffices to restore the cleanliness of the hands.

Séif 7 — מקום מטונף: the definition

Séif 7: a « soiled place » (מקום מטונף) refers to the parts of the body that are normally covered, because they have traces of sweat on them ; likewise if he scratched his head. Rem"a: therefore it is forbidden to touch these places while one stands in prayer or studies the Torah ; likewise the earwax and the nasal mucus, except by means of a garment.
The מקום מטונף refers to the covered parts (sweat) and the scratched head. During the תפלה or study one does not touch them — and for the ear and nose, only ע״י בגד (by a cloth).

Séif 8 — המשתין: waiting ד׳ אמות after urinating

Séif 8: one who has urinated does not pray until he has waited the time to walk four cubits (ד׳ אמות), because of the drops (נצוצות) ; and one who has prayed does not urinate until he has waited the time to walk four cubits, for during those four cubits his prayer is still present in his mouth and his lips are still moving.
A gap of ד׳ אמות in both directions: after urinating (because of the נצוצות, the drops) and after prayer (for תפלתו שגורה בפיו — the prayer still lingers on his lips).

Séif 9 — הרוקק: one who spits

Séif 9: one who has spat does not pray until he has waited four cubits ; one who has prayed does not spit until he has waited four cubits. And this only when he spits deliberately ; but if spittle comes to him of its own accord, it is permitted.
The same gap of ד׳ אמות for spitting — but only לרצונו (deliberate) ; spittle that comes of itself (נזדמן לו) is permitted.

Séif 10 —

Séif 10: it is good to give צדקה (charity) before prayer.
A final preparation, of the heart this time: giving צדקה before prayer disposes a person to stand before G-d.
The siman in one sentence: one who needs to relieve himself does not pray (תפלתו תועבה, per the שיעור פרסה) ; he does not interrupt the עמידה but steps aside during the ק״ש if there is בל תשקצו ; he removes כיחו וניעו, washes his hands (פרסה / מיל / עפר), does not touch a מקום מטונף, waits ד׳ אמות after urinating or spitting, and it is good to give צדקה קודם תפלה.

Practical cases

Case 1 — The pressing need before prayer

Situation: as he comes to pray, he feels the need to relieve himself. May he pray thus?
Conduct: if he cannot hold himself for the time to walk a parasa, he does not pray ; and if he prayed, תפלתו תועבה and he repeats it. If he can hold himself that long, לכתחילה he relieves himself first, but בדיעבד יצא. In practice, one follows one's Rav.

Case 2 — Washing the hands before prayer

Situation: he has no water readily at hand before praying. What to do?
Conduct: he washes with water if possible ; otherwise he seeks it עד פרסה when it is ahead of him, but only עד מיל if he must go back. If the time of prayer risks passing, a נקיון on a rock or in dirt suffices. For the details, one follows one's Rav.

Case 3 — Waiting after urinating or spitting

Situation: he has just urinated (or spat) and wishes to begin praying. Must he wait?
Conduct: he waits the time to walk ד׳ אמות before praying — because of the נצוצות — and likewise after prayer before urinating (תפלתו שגורה בפיו). Spittle that comes of itself is, however, permitted. For borderline cases, one follows one's Rav.

Comprehension questions

Check your understanding:
  1. Why is the prayer of one who is נצרך לנקביו an תועבה, and what is the role of the שיעור הילוך פרסה (séif 1)?
  2. When does one interrupt, and when does one continue כדרכו, because of בל תשקצו (séif 2)?
  3. How far must one seek water to wash the hands — פרסה or מיל — and why the difference (séif 4)?
  4. What is a מקום מטונף, and how does one cleanse if he touched it during the עמידה (séif 6-7)?
  5. Why wait ד׳ אמות after urinating or spitting (séif 8-9)?
