✦ ❖ ✦
This siman teaches the dress required for תפילה: if the טלית covers only ממתניו ולמטה, one covers the heart (לבו) before praying (and after the fact, שכסה ערותו — יצא); one must gird an אזור (חגירה) משום הכון; one does not utter a mention of the Name bareheaded; one covers the head (כובעים הקלועים מקש); one does not stand באפונדתו nor ברגלים מגולים; and one prays עטופים, adorned in בגדים נאים. Hebrew text, fluent English translation and explanation of the ו׳ seifim, with a section of practical cases.

The prophet taught (עמוס ד׳, י״ב): הִכּוֹן לִקְרַאת אֱלֹהֶיךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל — « Prepare to meet your God, O Israel ». From this verse our Sages learn that one makes oneself ready for תפילה: the body covered and adorned like one who stands before a king. The siman treats this preparation — covering the heart, girding a belt, covering the head, and dressing with dignity. We study here at the level of principle; for personal conduct, one refers to the custom and to the ruling of the Rav.

A. Dress for prayer — the ו׳ seifim
שֶׁיֶּאֱזֹר מָתְנָיו וִיכַסֶּה רֹאשׁוֹ בִּשְׁעַת תְּפִלָּה — girding the waist and covering the head for prayer — the thread of the siman is the preparation of the body (הכון לקראת אלקיך): on the one hand to separate the heart from the nakedness (שלא יהא לבו רואה את הערוה) — by the garment and the אזור; on the other to appear before the King with dignity — head covered, dress becoming. From this flow the six seifim.
Séif 1 — כיסוי הלב: covering the heart
Séif 1: if a טלית is girded on his waist to cover him from the waist down (ממתניו ולמטה), it is forbidden to pray until he covers his heart (עד שיכסה לבו); and if he did not cover his heart, or is prevented (נאנס) with nothing to cover himself, since he covered his nakedness and prayed — he has fulfilled it (יצא).
The principle: le-chatchila, one does not pray with only the lower body covered — one must also cover the heart. But be-diavad, since the nakedness (ערוה) was covered, the prayer is valid — even if the heart was not, or under אונס (nothing to cover with). Covering the heart here is a matter of הכון, not of the prohibition of praying facing the ערוה.
Séif 2 — חגירה: girding a belt משום הכון
Séif 2: one must gird an אזור at the time of prayer, even if he has a sash (אבנט) such that his heart does not see the nakedness — משום הכון (« Prepare to meet your God »); but the other blessings may be said without a belt (חגורה), since he wears trousers (מכנסים).
Two levels of requirement. For the amida / תפילה, one adds a חגירה (אזור) even though the separation between heart and ערוה already exists — this is the הכון, the special preparation before the King. For the other blessings, it suffices that he wears מכנסים and the heart does not see the ערוה; no additional belt is needed.
Séif 3 — הזכרה בראש מגולה: an uncovered head
Séif 3: there are those who say (יש אומרים) that it is forbidden to utter a mention of the Name (הזכרה) with an uncovered head (בראש מגולה), and there are those who say that one should protest (למחות) against entering the synagogue bareheaded.
A covered head expresses the awe of Heaven before the Name. Two formulations: one addresses the הזכרה itself — not to utter a mention of the Name בראש מגולה; the other, broader, addresses even entering the synagogue bareheaded, against which one should protest. Today the practice of covering the head has spread as the norm.
Séif 4 — גדר הכסוי: what counts as a covering
Séif 4: hats (כובעים) woven of straw (מקש) count as a covering (כסוי), but placing one's hand on one's head does not count as a covering; and if another places his hand on this one's head, it seems that it counts as a covering.
What is a כסוי? A real head-covering — even a light one, woven of straw — suffices. But one's own hand is not a covering: the hand and the head are one body, and the body does not cover itself. But another's hand is external, and can therefore count as a covering.
Séif 5 — אפונדתו ורגלים מגולים: dress before the great
Séif 5: he shall not stand [in prayer] with his money-belt (אפונדתו), nor with an uncovered head, nor with uncovered legs (ברגלים מגולים) — if the way of the people of the place is not to stand before the great (הגדולים) except with covered legs.
The rule is relative to local custom: one appears before the King as one would appear before the notables (הגדולים) of one's town. The אפונדה (a money-belt worn on the body) is unbecoming; likewise bare feet, where one does not so appear before the great. Where the custom is to stand barefoot before the great, there is no disgrace in it.
Séif 6 — עטופים ובגדים נאים: wrapped and adorned
Séif 6: the way of the Sages and their disciples is to pray only when they are wrapped (עטופים); and in a time of anger (בעת הזעם) one clasps the hands during prayer « like a servant before his master » (כעבדא קמי מריה), and in a time of peace (בעת שלום) one adorns oneself in fine clothes (בגדים נאים) to pray.
Two postures according to the time. The constant: the Sages pray עטופים, wrapped. Then, בעת הזעם — when strict judgment prevails in the world — one adopts the posture of the submissive servant, hands clasped כעבדא קמי מריה. And בעת שלום, one honors the prayer by adorning oneself in fine clothes, as one appears adorned before the King.
The siman in one sentence: one prepares for תפילה (הכון לקראת אלקיך) — covering the heart when only the lower body is covered (and be-diavad שכסה ערותו — יצא); girding an אזור משום הכון (the other blessings suffice with מכנסים); no הזכרה בראש מגולה; a כובע is a כסוי but not one's own hand; not standing באפונדתו ורגלים מגולים per local custom; and praying עטופים, hands clasped בעת הזעם and adorned in בגדים נאים בעת שלום.
Practical cases
Case 1 — Preparing to pray (covering the heart)
Situation: he has only a garment covering the lower body (ממתניו ולמטה). May he pray thus?
Conduct: le-chatchila, he first covers his heart before praying (הכון). But if he has already prayed without covering it, or he is נאנס with nothing else, since the ערוה was covered — יצא. For the practical application, one follows one's Rav.
Case 2 — The belt (חגירה) for prayer
Situation: he already wears מכנסים and a belt; must he add an אזור for the amida? And for an ordinary blessing?
Conduct: for the תפילה, one adds a חגירה (אזור) even though the heart does not already see the ערוה — משום הכון. For the other blessings, one need not gird: it suffices to wear מכנסים. For the details of the custom (today the gartel), one follows one's Rav.
Case 3 — Covering the head
Situation: his kippa fell during prayer; may he place his hand on his head to say a Name?
Conduct: a real כובע / head-covering (even a light one) is a כסוי. One's own hand is not a covering (hand and head are one body); but another's hand can be. To utter a הזכרה one thus needs a genuine covering. For borderline cases, one follows one's Rav.
Comprehension questions
Check your understanding:
- Why must one cover the heart (לבו) before praying, and why be-diavad is one still acquitted (séif 1)?
- What does the חגירה add for the תפילה that is not required for the other blessings (séif 2)?
- What do the two יש אומרים say regarding an uncovered head (séif 3)?
- Why is one's own hand not a כסוי, while another's hand is (séif 4)?
- What is כעבדא קמי מריה, and when does one adorn oneself in בגדים נאים (séif 6)?
