1. The text of the Shulchan Aruch

Siman ר״צ contains 2 seifim of the Mechaber (Rabbi Yosef Karo) codifying the laws of completing the 100 berachos of Shabbos with fruits.

Seif א — Completing the 100 berachos with fruits, delicacies and fragrances

Translation: "One should increase fruits, delicacies and fragrant spices in order to complete the count of 100 berachos [a day]. Rema: And one who is accustomed to the afternoon nap — he should not cancel it, for it is oneg for him (Tur)."
The problem of the 100 berachos on Shabbos: during the week, one easily reaches 100 berachos (3 Amidos × 19 berachos = 57, + birchos hashachar, + meals, + berachos hanehenin). On Shabbos, the Amidah has only 7 berachos: 4 × 7 = 28 against 57, 29 fewer on the Amidos alone. The final shortfall is smaller, since Shabbos brings berachos of its own — no source in the file fixes a number; the Mishnah Berurah (ר״צ ס״ק ב) says only שנחסר לו כמה ברכות שבתפלת שבת יש רק ז׳ ברכות וע״כ ישתדל להשלימם. The siman proposes 3 strategies:
  1. Fruits — beracha borei peri haetz or borei peri haadamah per category.
  2. Delicacies (megadim) — mezonos cakes, candies, etc.
  3. Fragrances (minei reiach) — spices, flowers, incense: hanosen reiach tov bapeiros, borei atzei besamim, etc.
"But do not cancel the nap": the Rema adds an important note. Many mistakenly thought one had to push to eat more and more in order to reach 100 berachos — at the risk of missing the nap, an essential element of oneg Shabbos ("Shabbos shenas taanug" — sleep on Shabbos is delight). The Rema rules: the nap is not to be cancelled.
What this seif says:

Seif ב — The "beis midrash" of Shabbos afternoon

Translation: "After the seudah of shacharis (= the morning meal), one establishes a beis midrash (kovim midrash) to read from the Neviim and expound on words of aggadah. And it is forbidden to set up a meal at that hour. Rema: And laborers and balei batim who do not learn Torah all week — they should learn more Torah on Shabbos than the talmidei chachamim who learn all week; and the talmidei chachamim may have more oneg in eating and drinking — for they delight in their learning all week (Beis Yosef siman 288 in the name of the Yerushalmi)."
The "beis midrash" of Shabbos afternoon: historically, after the morning meal, the community would gather to learn together Neviim and aggadic drashos — often led by the local Rav. This is the origin of today's shiurim of Shabbos afternoon in shuls.
Differential allocation by profile (Rema): Logic: each one completes on Shabbos what he lacks during the week — the balance of nefesh + guf.
"No meal at that hour": one avoids organizing a true meal (seudah-style) in the middle of the afternoon — to leave time for Torah study. Seudah Shelishis will come later, after Minchah (Siman 291).
Full text: these 2 seifim constitute the entire Mechaber's codification on this topic. Each one specifies a case, a condition or an exception.
What this seif says:

2. General context

What is this siman about?

Our short siman (2 seifim) covers 2 topics of Shabbos afternoon:

  1. Completing the 100 daily berachos — natural deficit on Shabbos (shortened Amidah); compensated through fruits, delicacies, fragrances.
  2. The Shabbos afternoon beis midrash — reading Neviim and learning aggadah; no meal at that hour.
The 100 daily berachos: the gemara states it in the name of Rabbi Meirתניא, היה רבי מאיר אומר: חייב אדם לברך מאה ברכות בכל יום (Menachos מ״ג ע״ב) — and the obligation is to recite a hundred berachos, as the Shulchan Aruch puts it (או״ח מ״ו:ג): חייב אדם לברך בכל יום מאה ברכות לפחות. The takanah of Dovid HaMelech belongs elsewhere: the Tur (או״ח מ״ו) brings it in the name of Rav Netronai Gaon. On Shabbos the Amidah has only 7 berachos: 4 × 7 = 28 against 3 × 19 = 57, 29 fewer on the Amidos alone. The siman proposes to make up the difference.

Place in Hilchos Shabbos

3. The key halachic concepts

(100 daily berachos): a baraisa of Rabbi Meir (Menachos מ״ג ע״ב): חייב אדם לברך מאה ברכות בכל יום — to recite. That berachos heard may count in certain cases is a view of the poskim, not the definition of the obligation. The takanah of Dovid HaMelech is from the Tur או״ח מ״ו, in the name of Rav Netronai Gaon.
(Megadim): delicacies, sweets, fine cakes — to distinguish Shabbos.
3. מיני ריח (Minei Reiach): fragrant plants/spices. Beracha: borei atzei besamim, borei minei besamim, etc. Each category of scent has its beracha — not each inhalation: או״ח רי״ז:א, ישב שם כל היום אינו מברך אלא אחת, and even going out and in, היה דעתו לחזור לא יברך.
(Shenas Tzaharayim): afternoon nap — element of oneg Shabbos. The Rema insists: not to be cancelled.
(Kovim Midrash): establishing a communal shiur — the source for the Shabbos afternoon shiurim in shuls.
6. Differential allocation (Rema, Yerushalmi): Logic: nefesh + guf balance over the week.

4. Overview of the 2 seifim

SeifTopicHalacha

5. The Mishnah Berurah — first entries

The Mishnah Berurah of Rabbi Yisroel Meir HaKohen (Chofetz Chaim) has 8 entries on this siman. Here are the first ones — to better understand the meaning of the seifim:

For the full text of the 8 entries, see Sefaria: Mishnah Berurah 290.

6. The position of the Rema

Where the Rema (Rabbi Moshe Isserles) adds a hagahah (gloss), he generally specifies Ashkenazi nuances vis-à-vis the Sephardi Mechaber. Check carefully the Hebrew text above to identify the passages introduced by הגה.

Rema's additions in this siman:

7. Modern practical cases

SituationPractical halacha
Calculating one's Shabbos berachosCount Shacharis + Mussaf + Minchah + Birchas HaMazon (3 seudos) + birchos hashachar + amen to olim and maftir (Siman 284). The total depends on each person's day; no source in the file fixes one, nor the shortfall.
Fruits as a strategyApples (haetz), strawberries (haadamah), fresh grapes (haetz) — each type one beracha. Borei pri hagefen is for wine and grape juice, not for grapes: על פירות האילן אומר בורא פרי העץ, חוץ מן היין, שעל היין אומר בורא פרי הגפן (Mishnah Berachos ו׳:א). See Siman 211 on the order of berachos.
Fragrances (besamim, flowers)Smelling cloves → atzei besamim; fresh mint → isvei besamim. Each new category, a new beracha — one does not begin again at each inhalation (או״ח רי״ז:א), and there is no beracha afterwards (או״ח רט״ז:א: אבל לאחריו אין צריך לברך).
Shabbos napPermitted and recommended (Rema). "Shabbos shenas taanug" (Pirkei deRabi Eliezer). But not to exceed to the point of missing Minchah + Seudah Shelishis.
Torah shiur after seudahIdeal (Seif ב). Many communities have a daf yomi shiur, Pirkei Avos (summer), aggadah, etc. on Shabbos afternoon.
One who doesn't enjoy learningFor laborers/professionals who don't learn during the week, it's more on Shabbos (Rema). At minimum: read one parashah, listen to a shiur.
Tired talmid chachamPermitted (per Rema) to prioritize physical oneg — nap, longer seudah — since he learns all week.
No fruits / fragrances availableCount berachos with care. Answering Amen to berachos heard is good practice; that it should COUNT toward the hundred is a view of the poskim and not part of the definition — ask the Rav.
Practical rule: Shabbos afternoon = balance of Torah + oneg. Each one according to his profile. No extremism — neither "all Torah" that cancels the nap, nor "all nap" that cancels Torah study.

8. Practical synthesis of the Siman

The 4 key teachings of Siman
  1. Completing the 100 berachos through fruits, delicacies, fragrances — to make up the Shabbos shortfall.
  2. Do not cancel the afternoon nap (Rema) — it is oneg.
  3. Shabbos afternoon beis midrash: Neviim + aggadah, no meal at that hour.
  4. Differential profile: laborers → more Torah; talmidei chachamim → more physical oneg.

9. Comprehension questions

Check your understanding:
  1. Why is there a shortfall of berachos on Shabbos? How much is missing?
  2. What are the 3 ways to compensate? Give an example for each.
  3. Why does the Rema insist on the nap? What is the source?
  4. What is the "Shabbos afternoon beis midrash" and what is its content?
  5. What is the Rema's difference of approach between laborers and talmidei chachamim?
  6. May one have a real meal after the morning meal and before Minchah?
