📑 Study Plan
1. The Text of the Shulchan Aruch
Siman רפ"ט contains 2 seifim of the Mechaber (Rabbi Yosef Karo) which codify the halachos relating to the order of the Shabbos morning seudah.
Seif א — Structure of the Shabbos morning seudah and Kiddusha Rabba
- Set table = kavod Shabbos.
- Kiddusha Rabba on wine (just Borei pri ha-gefen, no long brachah like at night).
- Netilas yadayim (ritual hand-washing).
- Lechem mishneh = 2 whole loaves (zecher to the double mon of erev Shabbos).
- Full seudah with fish/meat, zemiros, divrei Torah.
Seif ב — In the absence of wine: "chamar medinah" and alternatives
במקום שאין יין מצוי הוי שכר ושאר משקין חוץ מהמים חמר מדינה ומקדשין עליו ואם אין לו אפילו שכר ושאר משקין אוכל בלא קידוש:
- Wine (ideal, Borei pri ha-gefen)
- Chamar medinah (beer, other honorable beverages besides water) — recite "she-ha-kol nihiyah bi-dvaro"
- Nothing — eat without Kiddush (exceptional case)
2. General Context
What is this siman about?
Our siman codifies the second of the 3 seudos of Shabbos — the morning meal, after shacharis and Mussaf. It is the principal seudah after the night. It revolves around Kiddusha Rabba ("the Great Kiddush") — paradoxically the shortest of the Kiddushim — and the classical structure: set table, wine, lechem mishneh, meal, zemiros, divrei Torah.
- Seudah 1 — Friday night: after Kabbalas Shabbos (simanim 271-273)
- Seudah 2 — Shabbos morning: after shacharis + Mussaf (siman 289)
- Seudah 3 — Seudah Shelishis: between Mincha and the end of Shabbos (siman 291)
Position in Hilchos Shabbos
Siman רפ"ט fits within the sequence of meals/tefillos of Shabbos:
- Siman 286 — Mussaf of Shabbos
- Siman 287-288 — bikkur cholim, fasting
- Siman 289 — Seudas shacharis (our siman)
- Siman 290 — completing the 100 brachos with fruit
- Siman 291 — Seudah Shelishis
3. Key Halachic Concepts
4. Overview of the 2 Seifim
| Seif | Topic | Halachah |
|---|---|---|
| א | Structure of the seudah | Set table + Borei pri ha-gefen + Netilah + Lechem mishneh + makom seudah + nothing tasted before; water permitted before shacharis |
| ב | Without wine | Chamar medinah (beer, other beverages); nothing → eat without Kiddush |
5. The Mishnah Berurah — First Entries
The Mishnah Berurah of Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan (Chofetz Chaim) has 10 entries on this siman. Here are the first ones — to better understand the meaning of the seifim:
For the full text of all 10 entries, see Sefaria: Mishnah Berurah 289.
6. The Rema's Position
Where the Rema (Rabbi Moshe Isserles) adds a הגהה (gloss), he generally specifies the Ashkenazi nuances relative to the Sephardi Mechaber. Carefully check the Hebrew text above to spot the passages introduced by הגה.
7. Modern Practical Cases
| Situation | Practical halachah |
|---|---|
| Early morning: coffee before tefillah | Water permitted (seif א). Coffee/tea: machlokes — many are matir (before tefillah, to help concentrate). Wine/whiskey: forbidden before Kiddush. |
| No wine available | Beer, whiskey, cognac, grape juice = chamar medinah. Recite Borei pri ha-gefen on wine if there is even a little; otherwise she-ha-kol on chamar medinah. |
| Drinking a little before Kiddush | Forbidden. Kiddush must be the first thing drunk/eaten in the morning (after tefillah). |
| Kiddush in shul ("Kiddush club") | If one really tastes (pas ka-beitzah of mezonos, ≈ 56g of cake) — that is makom seudah and is mekayem the Kiddush. Otherwise, redo Kiddush at home before the real meal. |
| Lechem mishneh: only one whole loaf? | Lechatchilah 2 whole loaves. Otherwise, 1 whole + 1 piece (bedieved). Cf. siman 274. |
| Woman who must make Kiddush for herself | Permitted and obligatory (nashim are mechuyavos in Kiddush — kol she-yeshno bi-shemirah yeshno bi-zechirah). Borei pri ha-gefen + drink / eat. |
| Diabetic who cannot drink wine | Grape juice (kosher, alcohol-free) = real wine halachically. Otherwise, chamar medinah. |
| Without tablecloth / simple table | Lechatchilah: spread a tablecloth. Bedieved: valid. The ideal is the visible kavod ("kavod Shabbos"). |
8. Practical Synthesis of the Siman
- Kavod of Shabbos morning: set table, made bed, tablecloth — visible kavod.
- Kiddusha Rabba: short (just Borei pri ha-gefen) — the "Great Kiddush" by euphemism.
- Makom seudah: Kiddush must be at the place of the seudah — otherwise void.
- Don't taste before: as at night, wait for Kiddush. Exception: water alone, permitted before shacharis.
- Chamar medinah: if no wine, beer or other honorable beverage; last resort: eat without Kiddush.
9. Comprehension Questions
- What is the etymology of "Kiddusha Rabba" and why is it actually short?
- What does "Kiddush bi-mkom seudah" mean and what is its practical implication?
- Is drinking water in the morning before Kiddush permitted? Why?
- What is "chamar medinah" and when may it be used?
- Can water be chamar medinah? Why not?
- What is the place of the "set table" in the mitzvah (kavod Shabbos)?
- If one has neither wine nor chamar medinah, what does he do?
