1. The central Axiom

Siman של"ג in one sentence.
One may draw from a storehouse (otzar) all that one needs — but one cannot systematically clear it: that would be a weekday effort, and one would risk leveling the depressions of the exposed ground. Clearing is only permitted for a mitzvah (guests, beis midrash), and then by limited measure — five baskets, never the whole.

2. Key concepts condensed

ConceptDefinitionApplication in the siman
אוצרStorehouse of grain or jugsSubject of the siman — draw yes, clear no (se'if 1)
שמא ישווה גומותFear of leveling ground depressionsReason for not clearing entirely (se'if 1)
צורך מצוהMitzvah need (guests, beis midrash)Lifts the prohibition, by limited measure (se'if 1)
אוושא מילתא"The matter makes noise"Forbidden to fragment in small baskets (se'if 2)
טרחה יתרהExcessive effortNot one person to clear everything (se'if 3)

3. Hierarchy of cases

Permitted: draw from the storehouse what one needs for the day — the content is not muktzeh.
Permitted for a mitzvah: clear up to five baskets to receive guests or set up a beis midrash.
Conditional: if one started before Shabbos, one can continue (under the measure) even without a mitzvah.
Forbidden: clear the storehouse entirely (ground depressions); fragment in small baskets (noise); clear without any need.

4. Decision tree

Q1 — Do you just want to draw, or to clear the storehouse? Draw → permitted. Clear → continue.
Q2 — Is there a mitzvah need? (guests who lodge, beis midrash) No → forbidden. Yes → continue.
Q3 — What quantity? Up to five baskets per person → permitted. The entire storehouse → forbidden (ground depressions).
Q4 — How to transport? Without fragmenting in small baskets, without one person carrying everything. Doubt → consult your Rav.

5. Drawing or clearing: the measure of five baskets

The heart of the siman is not the prohibition of handling the storehouse — its content is not muktzeh and one draws freely — but a more subtle boundary: between drawing what one needs and clearing systematically. It is the same hand that takes grain and that clears the storehouse; what changes is the intent and the scope. And it is precisely there that the siman places its reference measure: five baskets.

Two distinct prohibitions behind a single act

Clearing a storehouse strikes not one but two prohibitions, and they must be kept separate. The first is the weekday effort: methodically clearing a reserve is a tidying chore, foreign to the spirit of Shabbos. The second, more technical, is the fear שמא ישווה גומות — "lest one level the depressions": once the ground is bare, one would be tempted to flatten its irregularities, which is a tolada of בונה, a Torah prohibition. It is this second motive that explains why, even for a mitzvah, one never clears the storehouse entirely: as long as merchandise remains, the ground does not appear and the temptation does not arise.

Drawing what one needs for the day → permitted, without measure: the content is not muktzeh.
Clearing for a mitzvah (lodging guests, setting up a beis midrash) → permitted, but up to five baskets per person.
Clearing entirely → forbidden even for a mitzvah: the bare ground would invite leveling depressions (toladas boneh).

Why five, and why "per person"

The number five is not an absolute quantity: it is a threshold that marks the limit between a targeted clearing — making the space needed for a mitzvah — and a complete clearing. The halachah adds a decisive nuance: the measure is understood per person. Several can participate, each for his share of five baskets; what is forbidden is for one person to carry everything, because it would be טרחה יתרה, the excessive effort of one. And the transport itself must remain discreet: fragmenting the load into multiple small baskets "to go lighter" makes אוושא מילתא — "the matter is heard," it gives Shabbos the appearance of a workday.

Remember: before touching the storehouse, ask "am I drawing, or am I clearing?" — then, if you are clearing, "for what mitzvah, and have I exceeded five baskets or uncovered the ground?" The mitzvah need opens the door; the measure and discretion set its threshold.

6. Mnemonic

ממִצְוָה: one only clears a storehouse for a mitzvah (guests, beis midrash).

צצַמְצוּם: by limited measure — five baskets, never the whole (ground depressions).

ששֶׁקֶט: without noise — no fragmenting, no excessive effort.

MaTZaSH (מצ"ש): mitzvah, measure, discretion.

7. Pitfalls to avoid

Pitfall 1 — confusing drawing and clearing. Taking from the storehouse what one needs: permitted. Clearing it as a tidying chore: forbidden.
Pitfall 2 — clearing entirely. Even for a mitzvah, one does not clear the whole storehouse: the bare ground would invite leveling its depressions (tolada of boneh).
Pitfall 3 — multiplying trips. Fragmenting the load into small baskets "to go lighter" makes noise (אוושא מילתא) and does not befit Shabbos.
Pitfall 4 — carrying everything yourself. One person clearing for all the guests provides excessive effort; each clears his share.

8. Modern practical cases
