1. The Central Axiom

Siman שס"ב in one sentence.
A mechitzah (מְחִצָּה) is not any wall: to establish a reshus hayachid and permit carrying, it must reach 10 tefachim, withstand a normal wind, and have more solid than empty — its pirtzos closed by lavud or rescued by a tzuras hapesach. And according to its purpose, it permits simple carrying or renders the space "muktaf le'dirah."

2. Key concepts condensed

ConceptDefinitionApplication
מְחִצָּה לְטַלְטֵלMechitzah valid for carryingSuffices up to two beis-seah
מוקף לדירהSpace "enclosed for dwelling"Required beyond two beis-seah
לָבוּדGap less than 3 tefachim = joinedCloses pirtzos and holes
פָּרוּץ וְעוֹמֵדEmpty/solid ratioParutz merubah → mechitzah null
צוּרַת הַפֶּתַחTzuras hapesach: 2 posts + crossbarRescues a pirtzah of more than 10 amos

3. Hierarchy of concepts

Condition 1 — Height: does the mechitzah reach 10 tefachim? (a natural drop can combine).
Condition 2 — Stability: does it hold against a normal wind? If not, it is not a mechitzah.
Condition 3 — Parutz/omed: is omed merubah on parutz? (pirtzos less than 3 → lavud closes them).
Condition 4 — Purpose: beyond two beis-seah, must it also be "muktaf le'dirah"?

4. Decision tree

Q1: Does the wall measure 10 tefachim and hold against the wind?
↓ NO → not a mechitzah; YES ↓
Q2: Does parutz outweigh omed?
↓ YES → null, unless pirtzos less than 3 (lavud); NO ↓
Q3: Is there a single pirtzah of more than 10 amos?
↓ YES → need a tzuras hapesach; NO → the pirtzah counts as a doorway ↓
Q4: Does the area exceed two beis-seah? If yes, the mechitzah must also be "muktaf le'dirah."
At the slightest doubt — and for any eruv — consult your Rav.

5. The mechitzah of human beings and the Rema's gloss

PointMechaber (seifim ה-ז)Rema (gloss, seif ז)
Mechitzah of peoplePermitted if they ignore their role; a third party places themOnly in case of necessity and sha'as hadechak
Object forgotten in reshus harabbimBetter to send young children, without a mechitzah
ChabadFollow Shulchan Aruch HaRav, siman שס"ב — see Level 4

6. Mnemonic מְחִצָּה

ממִדָּה: עֲשָׂרָה: a mechitzah measures 10 tefachim (a drop can combine).

חחֹזֶק בָּרוּחַ: it must withstand a normal wind.

צצוּרַת הַפֶּתַח: two posts of 10 and a crossbar rescue even a large pirtzah.

ההָעוֹמֵד עַל הַפָּרוּץ: omed must outweigh parutz (lavud closes any gap less than 3).

7. Pitfalls to avoid

Pitfall 1: Thinking that any wall surrounding a space is a "mechitzah." If parutz outweighs omed, or if it does not hold against the wind, it is null.
Pitfall 2: Confusing the two degrees. A mechitzah "for carrying" does not make the space "muktaf le'dirah" — a decisive distinction beyond two beis-seah.
Pitfall 3: Forgetting the 10-amos limit. A pirtzah up to 10 amos counts as a doorway; beyond, a tzuras hapesach is imperative.
Pitfall 4: Attaching the upper crossbar of the tzuras hapesach from the side of the posts. It must rest above, otherwise the tzuras hapesach is invalid.

8. Practical cases

10. Practical mitzvos of Siman שס"ב

For daily conduct

  1. A valid mechitzah measures 10 tefachim and holds against the wind.
  2. Omed must outweigh parutz; any gap less than 3 tefachim is closed by lavud.
  3. A pirtzah up to 10 amos counts as a doorway; beyond, a tzuras hapesach is needed.
  4. Two degrees: "for carrying" vs "muktaf le'dirah" — the second required beyond two beis-seah.
  5. The mechitzah of human beings is a last resort (Rema); in case of doubt, and for any eruv — consult your Rav.
