The seif numbers on this page are those of the Shulchan Aruch of the Mechaber (15 seifim). The Shulchan Aruch HaRav, studied in Level 4, has its own numbering: when it is cited, its name is given next to the number.

1. The central axiom

Siman שס״ו in one sentence.
A courtyard onto which several houses open is enclosed, and yet the Sages forbade carrying there from the houses until an eruv has been made (seif א). The eruv moves no wall: bread collected from each house and placed in one of them means that « אנו רואים כאלו כולם דרים באותו בית » (שו״ע או״ח שס״ו:א). The siman then sets out its conditions, each in its own seif: who needs one (seif ב), where to place it (seif ג), how to place it (seif ד), with no one particular about his share (seif ה), with what bread (seifim ו to ח), how one person transfers it to all and through whom (seifim ט and י), two particular cases (seifim יא and יב), and then the mitzvah and the blessing (seifim יג to טו).

2. The condensed key concepts

ConceptDefinitionIn the seif
עירובי חצרותThe eruv of courtyards: bread collected from each house and placed in one of themPermits carrying from the houses into the courtyard (seif א); pursuing it is a mitzvah (seif יג)
A house fit for dwellingThe place of deposit: not the courtyard, nor a gatehouse, a portico or a gallery; at least four amos by fourSeif ג; the house of deposit gives no bread (seif ג)
משום דירהThe eruv rests on dwelling, not on an acquisition (Mishnah Berurah, ס״ק כ״ג, on seif ג)Hence a minor's house may hold the eruv, and a minor may collect it (seif ג; Mishnah Berurah, ס״ק כ״ג and כ״ח)
שתוףShittuf, the partnership of alleysThe custom the Rema reports for his time (והמנהג בזמן הזה) is to place the eruv in the synagogue, and he proposes a reason for it (ונראה לי הטעם): our eruvin have the status of shittuf (seif ג)
שלא יקפידThat no one be particular about his share if another eats itOtherwise it is not an eruv; hence seif ה asks one to take care (צריך ליזהר) with what was prepared for Shabbos; the Mishnah Berurah (ס״ק ל״ו) writes that if one decides explicitly not to mind, it is presumably permitted
משום איבהThe fear of ill-will, the reason one does not make the eruv with a piece (Mishnah Berurah, ס״ק ל״ז, on seif ו)It does not apply when one person transfers to all (seif ז; Mishnah Berurah, ס״ק מ״ו)
פרוסה / שלימהThe piece / the whole loafA whole loaf even very small, provided the loaves reach the measure, not a piece even very large (seif ו); a piece is allowed when one person transfers to all (seif ז)
מזכהTransferring the eruv to the others, through an intermediary who lifts it a tefachThe one who gives bread for all (seif ט); through whom, according to two views (seif י)
לב ב״ד מתנה עליהםThe mind of the court stipulates for those who will be addedA view (וי״א) cited in seif ט

3. Structure of the siman — from the rule to the blessing

Seif א — the rule: without an eruv, one does not carry from the houses into the courtyard; the eruv makes all the residents regarded as living in one house.
↓
Seif ב — who needs one: tents, huts or a camp surrounded by a partition, yes; a caravan surrounded by a partition, no. Rema: houses on a ship, yes.
↓
Seif ג — where: the house of deposit gives no bread; the eruv need not be worth a perutah; not in the courtyard but in a house fit for dwelling, four amos by four; one does not change the usual house; even a minor may collect. Rema: the custom of the synagogue.
↓
Seif ד — how; seif ה — without being particular: the whole eruv in one vessel; no one is particular about his share.
↓
Seifim ו to ח — with what bread: a whole loaf, provided the loaves reach the measure, not a piece; a piece when one person transfers to all; bread of rice and lentils, not of millet.
↓
Seifim ט and י — when one person gives the bread for all: he transfers it through another, who lifts the bread a tefach, to all and to those who will come; through whom, according to two views.
↓
Seifim יא and יב — two cases: the bread on the table of a group seated when Shabbos begins; the guardian of a minor.
↓
Seifim יג to טו — the mitzvah and the blessing: pursuing the eruv is a mitzvah; one recites a blessing (seif יד), and says the declaration בהדין עירובא (seif טו); the blessing is not indispensable.

4. Decision tree — is a courtyard eruv valid?

Q1: Where is it placed? (seif ג)
↓ According to the Mechaber: not in the courtyard but in a house fit for dwelling — not in a gatehouse, a portico or a gallery — four amos by four. The Rema reports the custom of the synagogue, and proposes as its reason that our eruvin have the status of shittuf.
Q2: Is it in a single vessel? (seif ד)
↓ Divided between two vessels → it is not an eruv, unless the first was full and both vessels are in one house.
Q3: Is anyone particular about his share? (seif ה)
↓ YES → it is not an eruv; the Biur Halachah specifies, on the basis of the Beis Yosef, that this applies to a refusal on Erev Shabbos or at the time the eruv takes effect (bein hashmashos): a refusal on Shabbos does not void it, since the eruv has already taken effect; NO ↓
Q4: With what bread? (seifim ו to ח)
↓ A piece → one does not make the eruv with it (אין מערבין בפרוסה); if it was made so, the Mishnah Berurah (ס״ק ל״ז) reports that the Peri Megadim is in doubt whether it is valid even after the fact — consult your Rav; a whole loaf, even very small, provided the loaves reach the measure — and a loaf from which only the measure of the baker's challah was removed, or one broken and rejoined without it being noticeable, remains valid (seif ו). Rema: the custom of a single challah made from the collected flour, which must contain the required measure (seif ו; siman 368, seif 3). A piece is nevertheless valid when one person transfers to all (seif ז); of rice or lentils, not of millet (seif ח).
Q5: Did one person give the bread for all? (seifim ט and י)
↓ YES → he transfers it through another, who lifts it a tefach, to all and to those who will be added (seif ט); the choice of intermediary follows seif י.
→ At the slightest doubt: consult your Rav.

5. Through whom to transfer — the two views of seif י

The one who gives the bread for all transfers it through another (seif ט). Seif י brings two views on the members of the household through whom this may be done. summary : the table condenses the seif; its full text and translation are in Level 1.

IntermediaryFirst viewSecond view (יש אומרים)
Minor son or daughter not dependent on his tableNoThe son: yes, even a minor; the daughter: no, as long as she is not a bogeres
Canaanite slave or maidservantNoThe seif does not mention them for this view
Adult son or daughter dependent on his tableYesNo
Hebrew slave or maidservant, even minorsYesThe seif does not mention them for this view
His wifeYes, even if he provides her sustenance, and even if she has no house in the courtyardNo if he provides her sustenance, or if he told her « צאי מעשה ידיך במזונותיך » (שו״ע או״ח שס״ו:י), even if she has a house in the courtyard; yes if he does not provide her sustenance, other than in that last case
The conclusion of seif י:
  • The Mechaber: « ולכתחלה טוב לחוש לדברי שניהם היכא דאפשר » (שו״ע או״ח שס״ו:י).
  • The Rema: « ובדיעבד סומכין על דברי המיקל בעירוב » (רמ״א או״ח שס״ו:י); and an adult son who has a wife, even if he depends on his father's table, may serve as intermediary, even lechatchilah.
  • The Shulchan Aruch HaRav (seif 13 of its numbering, Level 4) brings the same two views, restates the rule bedi'eved, and adds in parentheses « וַאֲפִלּוּ לְכַתְּחִלָּה, בְּמָקוֹם שֶׁאִי אֶפְשָׁר בְּעִנְיָן אַחֵר יֵשׁ לְהָקֵל כִּסְבָרָא הָרִאשׁוֹנָה, שֶׁהוּא עִקָּר » (שו״ע הרב שס״ו:יג); in seif 14 of its numbering, it admits according to all views the married adult son and an orphan raised in one's home.

6. Mnemonic בָּתֵּי

The houses (בָּתֵּי) of the courtyard: through the eruv, one sees them as though all dwelt in a single house (seif א). Three letters for three requirements, in the order of the seifim (ב and ת in seif ג, then י in seif ט):

ב — בית: the eruv is placed not in the courtyard but in a house fit for dwelling, four amos by four (seif ג).

ת — תמיד בבית ידוע: where it is always placed in the same house, one does not change it, because of the ways of peace — מפני דרכי שלום (seif ג).

י — יזכה: the one who gives the bread for all transfers it to them through another, who lifts it a tefach (seif ט); through whom, seif י says.

7. Pitfalls to avoid

Pitfall 1: Thinking the house in which the eruv is placed must also give bread, or that the eruv must be worth a perutah. Neither (seif ג).
Pitfall 2: Thinking the eruv is placed in the shared courtyard. According to the Mechaber, it is not placed in the courtyard but in a house fit for dwelling — which excludes a gatehouse, a portico and a gallery — of at least four amos by four (seif ג).
Pitfall 3: Dividing the eruv between two vessels. It is not an eruv, unless the first was full and both are in one house (seif ד).
Pitfall 4: Making the eruv with the bread prepared for Shabbos without taking care. Seif ה asks one to take care: « לכך צריך ליזהר שלא לערב בדבר שתיקן לצורך השבת » (שו״ע או״ח שס״ו:ה), because an eruv about which someone is particular is not an eruv. The Mishnah Berurah adds that if one decides explicitly not to mind about this bread, « מסתברא דמותר לערב בו » (משנה ברורה שס״ו ס״ק ל״ו).
Pitfall 5: Preferring a large piece to a small whole loaf. It is the reverse: a whole loaf, even very small, provided the loaves reach the measure, and not a piece, even very large (seif ו); seif ו also accepts a loaf from which only the baker's challah was taken and a loaf broken and rejoined unnoticeably; and seif ז allows a piece when one person transfers to all — « אם אחד מזכה לכולם יכול לערב בפרוסה » (שו״ע או״ח שס״ו:ז).
Pitfall 6: Thinking an eruv collected without a blessing is void. Seif טו: « אין הברכה מעכבת ומותרים לטלטל » (שו״ע או״ח שס״ו:טו).
Pitfall 7: Mixing the two numberings. Levels 1 to 3 follow the Shulchan Aruch of the Mechaber; Level 4 follows the Shulchan Aruch HaRav, whose division differs: the two views of the Mechaber's seif י are found there in seif 13.

8. Practical cases

SituationAnalysisConduct
The eruv kept in the synagogue (custom of the Rema, seif ג)The custom reported by the Rema, with the reason he proposes: our eruvin have the status of shittuf (seif ג)This is the custom he reports, already that of the early authorities; the validity of the eruv rests with the Rav in charge of it
Using for the eruv the bread set aside for the Shabbos mealOne cares about it; an eruv about which one is particular is not an eruv (seif ה)Take care not to make the eruv with this bread (seif ה); if one decides explicitly not to mind about it, the Mishnah Berurah (ס״ק ל״ו) writes that it is presumably permitted; consult your Rav
A store-bought loaf that has been cut (application by the site)One does not make the eruv with a piece (seif ו); seif ו nevertheless accepts a loaf from which only the measure of the baker's challah, one forty-eighth, was taken, and a loaf broken and rejoined unnoticeably; seif ז allows a piece when one person transfers to allA whole loaf, even a small one, removes the question (seif ו), provided the loaves reach the measure (seif ו); for a given loaf, consult your Rav
New families move in during the year (application by the site)Seif ט requires transferring the eruv also to those who will be added; one view: the mind of the court stipulates for them, and the Mishnah Berurah (ס״ק נ״ג) writes that by strict law this is not so, but that nowadays one may rely on it, the eruv being placed for the whole year; the Shulchan Aruch HaRav (seif 12 in its own numbering, Level 4) writes that one may rely on it after the fact (bedi'eved) — consult your RavIf the eruv diminished below the measure before they arrived, add to it for them (seif ט)
Transferring the eruv through one's childTwo views, which do not admit the same children (seif י)Lechatchilah, it is good to take both into account where possible; bedi'eved, one relies on the lenient view (Rema); on the choice, consult your Rav
A group seated at a meal when Shabbos beginsThe bread on the table serves as eruv (seif יא)Provided they are seated in a house, a place fit to put an eruv, not in a courtyard
The eruv was collected and the blessing forgottenThe blessing is not indispensable (seif טו)Carrying is permitted

10. The practical commandments of Siman שס״ו

For daily conduct

  1. Without an eruv, do not carry from the houses into the shared courtyard (seif א); tents, huts or a camp surrounded by a partition need one too (seif ב). On the caravan, which seif ב exempts, the Biur Halachah writes « ודע דעיקר דינא דשיירא אינו ברור ורוב הפוסקים הראשונים חולקים ע״ז » (ביאור הלכה שס״ו), and the Shulchan Aruch HaRav (seif 2 of its numbering) speaks of a caravan on its way that stopped there for Shabbos; consult your Rav.
  2. The deposit: not in the courtyard but in a house fit for dwelling, four amos by four, and without changing the usual house (seif ג); the Rema reports the custom of the synagogue (seif ג).
  3. A single vessel (seif ד), and bread no one is particular about; take care with what was prepared for Shabbos (seif ה; see the Mishnah Berurah's reservation, ס״ק ל״ו, in section 8).
  4. A whole loaf, even small, provided the loaves reach the measure (seif ו); not a piece, even large, except the cases seif ו accepts (the baker's challah taken, the loaf rejoined unnoticeably) and that of seif ז (one person transfers to all); rice or lentils, not millet (seif ח).
  5. The one who gives for all transfers through another, who lifts the bread a tefach, to all and to those who will come (seif ט); for the intermediary, it is good lechatchilah to take both views into account where possible; bedi'eved, the lenient view (seif י, Rema).
  6. Two cases: the bread on the table of a group seated in a house, a place fit to put an eruv, when Shabbos begins serves as eruv (seif יא); the guardian of a minor may make the eruv for him (seif יב).
  7. The mitzvah and the blessing: « מצוה לחזור אחר עירובי חצרות » (שו״ע או״ח שס״ו:יג); one recites a blessing (seif יד); seif טו says when — at the collection or at the transfer — and that one also says the declaration בהדין עירובא; without a blessing the eruv stands (seif טו).
  8. In case of doubt — consult your Rav. In-depth pilpul — Level 2; Chabad shitah — Level 4.
