Siman 152 — The non-Jew’s wedding feast
Two seifim. An invitation to a wedding, food one brings oneself, a servant who is one’s own — and the prohibition stands. Then a dish sent to the house, which is permitted
Structured review, ruling tables, quick memorisation

📑 Plan of the synthesis
- The axiom: it is not the food, it is the invitation
- The 3 reflex questions
- Master table — the two seifim clause by clause
- The calendar of the siman
- The source of the prohibition: the Taz against the Nekudot HaKesef
- Enmity: the Perishah’s question
- The man of standing: four readings of one silence
- The Taz’s chiddush: the invitation that reaches the Jewish house
- The Pit’hei Teshuva: what is lenient before the preparations
- Golden rules, mnemonic, pitfalls and flash card
1. The axiom: it is not the food, it is the invitation
The starting point:
The seif itself rules out the two easy readings. אפילו אוכל משלו — even his own food: so it is not a dietary rule. ושמש שלו עומד עליו ומשמש — even his own servant: so it is not a question of service. And משיתחיל להכין צרכי הסעודה — from the preparations: the prohibition does not even begin at the meal.
Hence the axiom: what the Torah forbids here is being invited. The whole siman follows from that, and seif 2 proves it in reverse.
The source, and the derashah that fixes it:
And the reading the Taz draws from it:
| The clause | What it rules out | What remains |
The dietary reading | It is not what one eats |
The reading about service | It is not who serves |
The reading about the meal | It is not the moment of eating |
The reading about place alone | The invitation remains — and the Taz will show it travels |
💡 The marker: the word of the siman is not אכילה but קריאה.
2. The 3 reflex questions
1. Was there an invitation? If so, this is the siman. If the non-Jew merely sent something, summoning no one — seif 2, permitted.
▼
2. Where are we in time? Before the preparations: see the Pit’hei Teshuva. From the preparations to thirty days afterwards: forbidden. After thirty days: according to whether he invokes the wedding.
▼
3. Is it known that the non-Jew rejoices in this presence? That is the question of the man of standing, and the Tur makes it a question of fact, not of title.
3. Master table — the two seifim clause by clause
| Clause of the seif | Who speaks | What follows |
Mehaber | The case: a wedding feast |
Mehaber | The prohibition |
Mehaber | Neither food nor service saves the case |
Mehaber | The starting point — see the Pit’hei Teshuva |
Mehaber | The ordinary term |
Mehaber | The long term |
Mehaber | The permission |
Mehaber | The exception, and four readings |
Mehaber | The sending — without a summons |
Gloss (Beit Yosef in the Rosh’s name) | Even meat slaughtered according to law |
4. The calendar of the siman
| The moment | Without mention of the wedding | With mention of the wedding |
| Before the preparations | See Pit’hei Teshuva | See Pit’hei Teshuva |
| From the preparations through the feast days | Forbidden | Forbidden |
| The following thirty days | Forbidden | Forbidden |
| After thirty days | Permitted | Forbidden |
| After twelve months | Permitted | Permitted — save a man of standing |
5. The source of the prohibition: the Taz against the Nekudot HaKesef
| Position | The source of the prohibition | Consequence for enmity |
| The Taz (ס״ק א) | The verse — and it aims at distancing | Enmity cannot lift what commands it |
| The Nekudot HaKesef | The fear אזיל ומודי; the verse is אסמכתא | In this class one does permit for enmity |
Do not reduce this disagreement to a nuance. It bears on the nature of the prohibition, and it governs the practical answer. Both texts are by first-rank authors — and the second is the Shakh.
6. Enmity: the Perishah’s question
The Ba’er Hetev (ס״ק א) reports the question and the Taz’s answer. He does not join the Nekudot HaKesef to them — those are found at Level 1, in full.
7. The man of standing: four readings of one silence
| Who | What he reads in the silence of the Rif and the Rambam | What follows |
| The Beit Yosef | A measure of piety | Rav Yitzchak abstained out of piety |
| The Bach (in the Shakh) | They permit even a man of standing | No prohibition after twelve months |
| The Shakh (ס״ק ב) | Something obvious that need not be written | The prohibition stands; three parallels in support |
| The Taz (ס״ק ג) | Full legal standing | Forbidden once one knows the non-Jew rejoices in him |
8. The Taz’s chiddush: the invitation that reaches the Jewish house
| The situation | The Taz’s verdict |
| He sends to one person, asking nothing | Permitted — this is seif 2 |
| He sends to several, without asking them to gather | Permitted |
| He sends to several asking them to gather to consume it | Forbidden —
| Each takes his portion home | Permitted |
9. The Pit’hei Teshuva: what is lenient before the preparations
What the Radbaz permits, and what he refuses
He permits going before the preparations have begun, even if the non-Jew said expressly that it is for the wedding. And he refuses as soon as the circumstances raise a fear of idolatry in that feast.
10. Golden rules, mnemonic, pitfalls and flash card
The 5 golden rules
- The invitation, not the dish. The seif writes it three times, in three ways.
- The starting point is the arranging. Not the meal — and the Pit’hei Teshuva works precisely on what precedes it.
- Thirty days in every case, twelve months if he invokes the wedding. Two terms, one criterion: what he says.
- “Man of standing” is not a title. The Tur makes it a question of fact — is it known that he rejoices in you?
- Seif 2 does not permit the food: it permits the absence of an invitation. Once a sending summons, it is forbidden again (Taz
Mnemonic — the word
מ — מַאֲכָלוֹ שֶׁלּוֹ אֵינוֹ מוֹעִיל: his own food makes no difference
ש — שְׁלוֹשִׁים יוֹם: thirty days after the feast
ת — תְּרֵיסַר יַרְחֵי שַׁתָּא: twelve months, if he invokes the wedding
ה — הַזְמָנָה הִיא הָאִסּוּר: it is the invitation that forbids
The 4 classic pitfalls
- Thinking that bringing one’s own food settles the matter. The seif rules it out in advance, in so many words.
- Thinking that seif 2 permits every sending. The Taz (ס״ק ב) shows that a sending can be an invitation.
- Taking “man of standing” for an honorific category. The Tur and the Taz make it a question of fact.
- Deciding the question of enmity from one of the two texts alone. The Taz and the Nekudot HaKesef are head-on opposed; the Ba’er Hetev reports only the first.
| Seif | In one line |
| 1 | A non-Jew who makes a wedding feast for his son or daughter: the Jew does not eat there, even his own food and served by his own servant; from the preparations until thirty days afterwards — twelve months if he invokes the wedding, and without term for a man of standing. |
| 2 | If he sends live fowl or fish to the Jew’s house, it is permitted; and likewise, per the gloss, meat slaughtered according to the law. |
Flash card.
