The siman looks simple and is not. Beneath its nine seifim live a hakira on the very nature of חציצה in vessels, three disputes one of which sets the Shach against the Taz in writing, a textual emendation that two Acharonim sign with the same word, and two questions the Arukh HaShulchan leaves open.

1. The hakira — a defect in the object, or a defect in the water?

Does חציצה obstruct because the vessel did not enter the water in its entirety — in which case what counts is the object, its surface, its unity — or because the water did not touch the vessel — in which case what counts is contact, at every point?

The two formulations give the same verdict in the ordinary case. They part on one point, and it is exactly the point that seif 5 and seif 9 put in play: the בית הסתרים, the recess the water does not reach.

The Tosafot on חולין hold the second term, and their question shows that they do: if the surplus handle is not immersed, why is that not a minded lesser part?

The Rosh holds the first, and his answer is of another order: in a vessel, the hidden place is not a spot the water must reach — it is a spot no one minds. The Arukh HaShulchan sets the two side by side:

The nafka mina is in seif 5, and it is visible to the eye. A handle broken inside the rim does not interpose. For the Tosafot the water must still be able to come there — hence their reading of a handle made of links. For the Rosh and Rabbenu Shimshon nothing of the sort is needed: a vessel’s hidden place is outside the field of interposition, fit for water or not. A hollow handle hermetically sealed decides between them.

2. First dispute — the mishnah of glass: leniency or stringency?

Two ways of reading “on a glass vessel”. Either the mishnah teaches that on glass only pitch and mor interpose, because nothing else adheres to it — a leniency about glass, a stringency about the rest. Or it teaches that on glass even pitch and mor interpose, whereas elsewhere they are tolerated because it is usual to coat the vessel — a stringency about glass.
Rashi and the Tur — the first reading, and the Tur gives its physical reason.
The Semag, in the name of Rabbenu Yitzchak — the second, and the Shach brings it at ס״ק א.
The Arukh HaShulchan does not choose: he takes the stringency on both sides, and gives in passing the psychological reason for stringency about glass — it is the material whose cleanliness is demanded.
Two nafka minot, in opposite directions. On glass: a substance other than pitch and mor — for Rashi and the Tur it does not stick and does not interpose; for the Semag it interposes all the more. On a metal vessel coated with pitch: for Rashi and the Tur it interposes; for the Semag it does not, for such is its way. Taking both stringencies forbids in both cases.
A word on the מור itself, for opinions differ there too. The Rambam writes חמר, and the Sefaria edition records the variant in a parenthesis of seif 1. The Taz refers to the ערוך and takes it as myrrh; the Arukh HaShulchan makes it a sticky bitumen close to pitch. The halakha is not changed by this — whatever sticks and one wants gone interposes — but the identification remains open.

3. Second dispute — the wide vessel immersed mouth-down

This is the central dispute of the siman, and it is born of a single word of the Shulchan Arukh. The mishnah says without distinction: one who immerses a vessel through its mouth — it is as if he had not immersed it. Rabbenu Shimshon takes it of any vessel. The Shulchan Arukh writes The Taz retraces the history of that word:

The Bach does not answer one reasoning with another: he answers with experiment. Tested and proven, he writes — in any vessel, even a wide one, the water does not reach the base within, because of the air inside it.
The Taz reconciles, and his reconciliation is a third position: the truth is with the Bach, except for a wide vessel with no large cavity — a bowl, for instance — where the water does enter. And there, he says, the Beit Yosef is right.
The Nekudot HaKesef — that is, the Shach himself — refuse the reconciliation, on two grounds. The first is textual: the Shulchan Arukh wrote somewhat narrow, and if the rule were the Taz’s, a very wide mouth would be at issue too. The second is again experimental, and turns the Bach’s weapon back on the Taz.
The Arukh HaShulchan decides, and he decides like the Taz: he takes the Taz’s distinction into his own formulation of the law, naming bowls and wide cups expressly.
The nafka mina is a single gesture. A bowl, a deep plate, a wide cup, immersed upside down and not righted: for the Beit Yosef the immersion is valid; for the Bach and the Nekudot HaKesef it is not; for the Taz and the Arukh HaShulchan it is, because the cavity is small. For a deep pot the four agree: it is not.

The Baer Hetev at ס״ק ה reports the two positions one after the other without deciding — and it is that entry which sets the reader before the whole dispute.

4. The Taz’s question from siman 201, and his two answers

The same Shulchan Arukh writes, in the previous siman, that one who immerses in a barely sufficient mikveh immerses the cauldron and the other vessels through their mouth; and here, that through the mouth there is no immersion at all. How do the two stand together?
Two answers, and they do not cost the same. The first rests on the Taz’s own distinction: the cauldron of siman 201 may be very wide, so it falls under the exception. The second gives up the distinction and re-reads siman 201: there it did not say “through its mouth” literally, but that one turns it somewhat within the water.
The second answer is the one that matters in practice, and it almost passes unnoticed: within the water he turns it somewhat. It is not a matter of choosing how to enter the mikveh, but of making, once the vessel is under, the motion that lets the air out. That motion alone makes the dispute moot.

5. The Arukh HaShulchan’s question on the Rama’s gloss

The Rama writes that soot stuck to a cauldron on the outside is like the wall of the vessel. The Arukh HaShulchan wonders: the mishnah says expressly that one does not immerse the קומקום with its coals unless he has scoured them — and what difference is there between a קומקום and a יורה?
The answer turns on a reading of the Rambam, and the Rosh subscribes to it: the matter is not the soot outside but the coals within, which must be shifted so they do not stick to one another. The Rama’s gloss then stands — but on the Bartenura’s reading it would not.
And a question remains that the Arukh HaShulchan does not resolve. The Rambam held that the greater part interposes even without particularity. If, then, the greater part of the cauldron is covered with soot, does the Rama’s leniency still hold?
His answer is an inclination, not a decision — and he says so in his own words: if the soot is truly like the wall, it does not fall under particularity at all, and the measure of the greater part does not touch it. But he adds that the matter still needs weighing in practice.

6. The שפופרת הנוד — one measure, two uses

The width of a skin-flask’s spout is the classical measure of joining: below it, two waters do not meet. The gloss of seif 6 requires it of the outer vessel. But is that the same requirement as seif 8, where the Shulchan Arukh asks that a narrow-necked vessel be filled?

The Shach answers no, and it is a distinction of substance: there is the joining of water to water, and there is the joining of water to the vessel it must touch. The second does not need the measure of the first.
The Shach adds the consequence that matters: the converse is true as well. A mouth wider than the measure exempts nothing if the water does not enter of itself — one must still wait or fill.
And the measure is relativized by yet another route, that of מיגו. If the outer vessel itself needs immersion, says the Shach, the immersion that avails for the outer avails for the inner too — and the mouth need no longer measure anything. The Arukh HaShulchan at once sets the limit of that מיגו: it holds for the mouth, not for the weight.
Three regimes not to be confused. One — the outer vessel is already pure: the measure of the spout is required. Two — the outer vessel also needs immersion: the measure no longer binds. Three — in both cases, if the inner vessel presses on the base, neither is immersed at the point of pressure, and no מיגו helps there.

The Shach at ס״ק ו details in practice what this yields for a basket of dishes — and his conclusion is more lenient than one would expect:

7. The hidden place of vessels, and the place of the cut

Seif 9 exempts one from immersing the handle beyond the measure. The Taz gives in nine words the reason why the place of the cut itself does not interpose:

But Rashi and the Bartenura give a quite different reason: whatever stands to be cut is as though cut. The Arukh HaShulchan rejects that reason on two counts. First, because that logic is Rabbi Shimon’s, and the halakha does not follow Rabbi Shimon in such reasoning. Second, because it is superfluous: if the hidden place of vessels need not even be fit for water to enter, why say that what is to be cut is already cut?
And he raises a second question, which touches the ruling itself. In the mishnah the division is between the first opinion and Rabbi Yehuda; in the gemara of חולין, between Rabbi Meir and the sages. The Rambam, the Tur and the Shulchan Arukh ruled like the first opinion — but on the gemara’s version that amounts to ruling like Rabbi Meir against the sages.
That צ״ע has practical reach. It does not undo the halakha of seif 9 — the Shulchan Arukh ruled — but it invites one, where it costs nothing, to immerse the whole handle. And that is what practice does of itself: one does not measure what is to be cut, one immerses the object.

8. The yesod of the siman

The siman holds two obstructions, and they are not built the same. The stuck substance is measured: it has a threshold of surface — רובו — and a threshold of attention — מקפיד — and it is debated which is from the Torah. The trapped air is not measured: an unwetted base is not a lesser part left unwetted, it is an immersion that did not happen. That is why seif 6 speaks neither of a majority nor of particularity, and why the dispute it opens is not a dispute about a measure but about a fact: does the water enter, or does it not?

The Taz, at the first ס״ק of the siman, lays down the first half of this yesod by tying the stuck substance to siman 198 — that is, to the immersion of persons — and naming the two thresholds:

10. What remains open

  1. Soot over the greater part of the cauldron. The Arukh HaShulchan inclines to permit, because the soot is “truly like the wall” and so falls outside the measure of particularity — but he writes that the matter needs weighing in practice, and does not make it a ruling.
  2. The gemara’s version in חולין at seif 9. The division between the first opinion and Rabbi Yehuda in the mishnah becomes, in the gemara, a division between Rabbi Meir and the sages. Ruling like the first opinion then amounts to ruling against the sages, and the Arukh HaShulchan writes וצ״ע קצת.
  3. The identity of the מור. The Rambam writes חמר; the parenthesis of seif 1 records two other readings; the Taz refers to the ערוך, the Arukh HaShulchan makes it close to pitch. The halakha does not depend on the answer; the reading of the text does.
  4. The hidden place: must it be fit for water to enter? The Tosafot require it, the Rosh and Rabbenu Shimshon do not. The Shulchan Arukh does not decide expressly; the Taz at ס״ק ט sides with the Rosh.
