1. The axiom: prior annulment, and what undoes it

The axiom. A man may, by a word, prevent his future vows from taking hold. But that word remains a word, and a later word can undo it: a man who vows knowing he has protected himself withdraws his protection by that very vow — עקריה לתנאיה. The whole siman is decided between these two propositions.
Three consequences. (1) The annulment must be spoken — thought undoes nothing. (2) In the same breath it prevails; laid down long before, it works only if the man does not remember it. (3) And it never reaches a vow or oath another man imposed on him.

2. The three reflex questions

1. Who imposed the vow? Another man — seif 4 shuts the door, nothing in this siman applies. He himself — next question.
▼
2. Was the annulment spoken, and when? Only thought — void. Spoken in the same breath — the vow falls. Spoken long before — next question.
▼
3. Did he remember it while vowing? No — the vow falls. Yes, entirely — the vow stands. Yes, but without knowing its object — everything hangs on “by my first intention”.

3. Master table — the four seifim clause by clause

SeifThe clause of the Shulchan ArukhWhat it decides
A disavowal said in the same breath carries off the vow
Provided it left the lips
Merely thought, it undoes nothing
Contrary view: said in a whisper, it is still a thing of the heart
Gloss: but one does not release without a sage, save for a great need
A condition laid down for a period, and a vow made within it
If he remembers while vowing, the vow stands: he uprooted his condition
If he does not remember, the condition stands and the vow falls
ב« ויש אומרים שאין התנאי מועיל לבטל הנדר אלא אם כן יזכרנו תוך כדי דיבור לנדר ויאמר בלבו שהוא סומך על התנאי ויש לחוש לדבריהם » (שו״ע יו״ד רי״א:ב)Contrary view: he must recall it at once and rely on it in his heart
He remembers having stipulated, without knowing about what
The formula “by my first intention” saves the condition
Without that formula, the condition falls and the vow stands
All this applies only to a vow or oath he imposed on himself
A vow imposed by another is untouched by this annulment

4. The grid of remembrance

5. כל נדרי — what the siman establishes exactly

Five lines, and nothing more. (1) The declaration counts as an express stipulation — so it falls under the regime of this siman. (2) We do not rest on it to permit without going before a sage, save for a great need. (3) The Shach writes that the gloss belongs to seif 2. (4) It applies to nezirut too, although the word is not there. (5) And for an oath taken while holding an object it is not established that it avails. Whatever one reads elsewhere does not come from here.

6. The open disputes among the commentators

Three, and each is named.

7. The vocabulary of the siman

TermMeaning
Prior annulment, which prevents the vow from arising — as distinct from release
He uprooted his condition: vowing while remembering it abolishes it
The formula of seif 3, which preserves the benefit of the condition
In a whisper — the word of the יש אומרים in seif 1, and the object of the dispute
In public — what the Shach requires, on the Rosh and Rabbenu Yeruḥam
Things of the heart that are manifest: Rabbenu Eliezer of Metz’s phrase
The declaration of the night of Yom Kippur, which the Rama attaches to this siman
Vows of urging, the other half of the mishnah
While holding an object — the Shach’s reservation at ס״ק ה
Why the gemara does not want this expounded in public

8. Rules of thumb, a mnemonic, and standard pitfalls

Say it, remember it, and to whom. Say it: the annulment goes through the mouth. Remember it: remembering the condition at the time of the vow reverses the result. To whom: none of this applies to what one owes another.
