Summary of the heading: the siman opens with its title — laws of milk that fell into a meat pot — and announces nine seifim; the edition followed here does divide it into nine.

A kezayis of meat fell into a pot of boiling milk: the non-Jew tastes the pot. If he says there is a taste of meat in it, it is forbidden; if not, it is permitted even with less than sixty — and that piece itself is forbidden. When is this said? When one hastened and removed the piece before it could release the milk it had absorbed, that is, before the pot ceased boiling. But if one did not manage to remove it, such that it was able to release the absorbed milk, then even though the non-Jew tasted it and finds no taste at all, it is forbidden — unless there is sixty. Rama’s gloss: and see below siman 98, that we do not have the practice of relying on the tasting of a non-Jew, and we require sixty in every case.

1. Introduction to the sugya — a kezayis of meat in a pot of milk

↩ Detailed explanation (level 1)

The foundation — the tasting of the קפילא and the moment of removal

The whole siman rests on one simple observation: the prohibition of meat with milk is a prohibition of taste. It is not a quantity to be measured but a flavour to be established. Hence the permission of the gemara (Chullin 97b) to rely on the קפילא, the gentile craftsman whose trade this is, to say whether or not there is a taste of meat in the milk. If he says there is, it is forbidden; if he says there is not, it is permitted even with less than sixty. But the piece itself remains forbidden: it absorbed milk, and that prohibition sits inside its own body — no external tasting washes it out.

The time condition. The whole permission of the קפילא is stated only where the piece was removed before it gave back the milk it had drunk — and the Shulchan Aruch gives that “before” a physical measure: before the pot settles from its boiling. Past that moment, even the testimony of taste no longer serves, and sixty is required.
The Rama’s ruling (gloss). The Rama refers to siman 98 and withdraws the permission of tasting: we do not rely on it, and sixty is required in every case. In practice the permission of the קפילא has ceased to operate, and the whole sugya is replayed in the single measure of sixty — and that is the decisive gap between the letter of the Mechaber and the received practice.

2. The two prohibitions in seif 1 — the chidush of the Taz

↩ Detailed explanation (level 1)

This is one of the sharpest passages in the siman, and the full weight of the Taz (ס״ק א) is invested in it.

The chakira. If the non-Jew tasted and sensed nothing, why should we still fear that the piece will release the milk it drank? Meat forbids only by its taste — and we have just tasted and found nothing. What is left to forbid?
The Taz’s answer. The Taz answers that this seif contains not one prohibition but two, and that the question touched only the first. The first is the taste of meat that the piece releases at once into the milk — that one is judged by tasting, or by sixty, and everyone agrees to it. The second is the milk that the meat first absorbed and then returns to the rest of the milk in the pot: that one is milk within milk, and no tasting in the world can detect it.

Here lies the root of the time condition: the second prohibition does not exist while the pot is boiling, because as long as it boils the meat does not give back what it drank. It is born at the instant the boiling stops.

Min b’mino — the Riva (Rashi) and Rabbeinu Tam. The second prohibition is milk mixed into milk: a kind within its own kind. On this the Taz sets two shitos against one another, and the legibility of the whole seif depends on which of them we hold.
ShitaMilk in milk (min b’mino)Source
Rashi (and the shita of the Riva) Even in the smallest amount — a kind within its own kind is not nullified; sixty would therefore be of no use against the absorbed milk Taz
Rabbeinu Tam (and this is what we hold) Nullified in sixty — even a kind within its own kind Taz
The root of the matter. Were we not to hold like Rabbeinu Tam, the absorbed milk — a kind within its own kind — would forbid in the smallest amount, and nothing, not even sixty, could help it. It is because we hold that a kind is nullified within its own kind by sixty that the second prohibition becomes measurable again — and that is why the Mechaber can write, for that case, that it is forbidden “unless there is sixty”. And with that one also understands the Rama’s requirement: the sixty he demands in every case is measured against both prohibitions together.
The kezayis is not a measure here. The Taz closes his ס״ק with a point of reading worth hearing: when the Shulchan Aruch speaks of a kezayis, the rule does not depend on it — the same would be true of less than a kezayis. The kezayis governs only the question of lashes.

3. The foundation of tzeiruf — stirring and covering

↩ Detailed explanation (level 1)

The text of the Mechaber and the Rama (seif 2)

Milk fell into a pot of meat: one tastes the piece on which the milk fell. If it has no taste of milk, everything is permitted; if it has taken on a taste of milk, that piece is forbidden (and for us, who do not rely on non-Jews, sixty is required in the piece, and if not, all of it is forbidden). And one measures against the whole: if there is in everything the pot contains — the pieces, the vegetable, the broth and the spices — enough for this piece to be one sixtieth of the whole, that piece is forbidden and the rest permitted. When is this said? When one did not stir the pot at the outset, when the milk fell, but only at the end, and did not cover it. But if one stirred from beginning to end, or covered it from the moment of the fall until the end, everything joins together to nullify the taste of the milk.

Rama’s gloss: likewise, if one did not stir at all, neither at the outset nor at the end, and did not cover at all — if there is sixty in the pot against the drop of milk that fell, only the piece is forbidden and the rest of the pot is permitted (Beis Yosef in the name of the Raavad, and the Maggid Mishneh in the name of the Rambam). And likewise, if one stirred at the outset or covered immediately, even though one neither stirred nor covered at the end, the whole pot joins — provided that one stirred or covered immediately when the prohibited thing fell there (Tur, and Beis Yosef in the name of R. Yosef ibn Chaviv).

Likewise, if it fell into the broth or onto the pieces and it is not known onto which piece it fell, one stirs the whole pot until it all mixes again: if there is a taste of milk in the whole pot, it is forbidden, and if not it is permitted; and if no non-Jew is found to taste and be relied upon, one measures by sixty (end of the Rambam’s words). Gloss: and there are those who disagree and hold that stirring the pot is of no avail unless one stirred immediately when the prohibited thing fell (Tur) — and so is the practice.

What a “tzeiruf” is. The taste of the milk spreads through the whole pot only where something carries it. As long as one has neither stirred nor covered, the taste stays concentrated in the single piece that received it, and the rest of the pot does not join to nullify it: hence the prohibition of that piece alone, if it does not contain sixty by itself. Stirring and covering are therefore, in this siman, the conducting mechanism of taste — and the Shach, explaining the seif, says exactly this.
When does stirring join? Within the same seif the Rama brings two positions that do not say the same thing about the moment.
ShitaStirring / coveringSource
The Raavad, and the Maggid Mishneh in the name of the Rambam Even without stirring at all: if there is sixty in the pot against the drop, only that piece is forbidden and the rest permitted Rama, seif 2
The Tur, and the Beis Yosef in the name of R. Yosef ibn Chaviv Stirring and covering join only if done at the very moment of the fall — and so is the practice Rama, seif 2

The Shach adds here a reading worth keeping: according to the Tur it is not even required to keep stirring — it is enough to have stirred or covered at the instant of the fall, even if one stopped afterwards. And he concludes that this is the main view.

The Rama’s ruling. The Rama brings both positions and then rules: stirring in the middle or at the end does not join the whole pot unless one stirred from the fall. The reason follows the mechanism the Shach described: if the prohibited thing stayed in place until it was absorbed into that one piece, the piece has become what it has become, and stirring afterwards does not undo it — it only introduces into the pot a piece that is now itself forbidden. And where the milk fell into the broth, or onto pieces without knowing which, the Rambam writes that one stirs everything until it mixes again, and measures by sixty.

4. Chaticha naaseis neveila — the foundation

↩ Detailed explanation (level 1)

The text of the Mechaber (seif 3)

When that piece became forbidden on account of the milk, the whole piece becomes forbidden; and if it was afterwards cooked with other pieces, sixty is needed to nullify the whole of it. If one recognises it, one throws it away and the others are permitted; if one does not recognise it, the broth is permitted, and all the pieces are forbidden if the forbidden piece is one of those with which a host honours his guests.

Why the whole piece. The reason, as the Shach reports it in the name of the poskim, lies in what makes this prohibition singular: meat by itself is permitted, milk by itself is permitted, and it is their meeting that forbids. It follows that there is no foreign forbidden body lodged inside a permitted one — the piece itself has become the prohibition. One therefore does not measure sixty against the absorbed milk, but against the entire piece.
“Fit to be presented” (see siman 101). If one does not recognise the forbidden piece and it is of the kind one would set before guests, it is a thing of importance, which is not nullified in a majority: even surrounded by a majority of permitted pieces, all are forbidden — while the broth remains permitted, not being a “thing of importance”. The Shach ties this to siman 101 and gives the reason: meat with milk is a prohibition in its own right.

5. The Rama’s ruling — ch.n.n. in all prohibitions

↩ Detailed explanation (level 1)

This is one of the sharpest and most far-reaching machlokos in the whole body of the laws of mixtures.

The text of the Mechaber and the Rama (seif 4)

They said that the piece itself becomes neveila only for meat with milk, but not for the other prohibitions. For example: a kezayis of forbidden fat absorbed into a piece, with no sixty to nullify it, and the piece became forbidden; if it is afterwards cooked with others, only sixty against the kezayis of fat is required — and then even the piece itself returns to being permitted.

Rama’s gloss: and there are those who say that for all prohibitions we say the piece becomes neveila (Tosafos, Semag, Semak, Mordechai and the later authorities), and such is the widespread practice, which is not to be changed. But this only where the prohibited thing adheres to the permitted piece, or where the piece is entirely outside the broth and the prohibited thing fell upon it; but if part of the piece is inside the broth and the prohibited thing does not adhere to it, we do not say the piece becomes neveila, and the whole pot joins together to nullify the prohibition — and nevertheless one should be stringent and forbid that piece (Aroch, rule 28). And all this for the other prohibitions; but for meat with milk, even where the prohibited thing does not adhere and part of the piece is inside the broth, we say that the piece becomes neveila.

There are those who say that we do not say “the piece becomes neveila” where a wet prohibited substance was mixed into a wet permitted one, and afterwards the whole was mixed into another permitted substance: only sixty against the prohibited thing that fell is then required (Mordechai ch. 25, Rashba and Ran in the name of the Raavad); and one may rely on this for the other prohibitions in case of great loss, but not for meat with milk. And if dry was mixed with dry, we do not say for any prohibition that the piece becomes neveila; see below siman 99. A vessel made forbidden by what it absorbed — we do not say of it that the piece becomes neveila, and only sixty against what it absorbed is required (Mordechai; see below siman 98).

The root of the machlokes.
ShitaCh.n.n. in the other prohibitionsSource
The Mechaber Only for meat with milk — there the whole piece is the body of the prohibition; elsewhere, sixty against the absorbed prohibition alone Mechaber, seif 4
The Rama (Tosafos, Semag, Semak, Mordechai) In all prohibitions — and the Shach recalls that by all opinions this is only mid’rabanan Rama, seif 4; Shach
The Rama’s conditions. Even for the Rama, who extends the principle to all prohibitions, the extension holds only in two configurations: either the prohibited thing adheres to the permitted piece, or the piece is entirely outside the broth and the prohibited thing fell upon it. If part of the piece is bathing in the broth and the prohibited thing does not adhere, the principle does not operate: the whole pot joins to nullify, and only a stringency remains upon that piece. All this for the other prohibitions; for meat with milk the Rama writes that the principle operates in every case.
The Shach does not receive this compromise in silence. Behind the condition “part of it in the broth” stands an old divergence, which the Shach sets out already on seif 2: for Rabbeinu Yitzchak, the piece blocks the tzeiruf only if it is entirely outside the broth; for Rashi, even part of it in the broth changes nothing. The Rama built his rule as a compromise between these two readings — the Shach says so in as many words, and then marks a צ״ע on the second half of the gloss, the half that extends the principle to meat with milk even when part of the piece is bathing in the broth. We report, and we do not rule.

And the Shakh does not leave his צ״ע unanswered: he offers a yishuv of his own — what the Rama writes of meat with milk, even where part of the piece lies in the broth, holds where one afterwards stirred (בשניער) until the piece entered the broth entirely. We report the difficulty and its answer, without deciding between them.

Wet in wet. A wet prohibited substance mixed into a wet permitted one, and then fallen into another permitted substance: we do not say that the whole becomes neveila, and sixty against the prohibited substance itself suffices. The Shach gives the reason: the principle rests on the importance of the piece, which presupposes that it be recognisable and distinct — which a liquid inside a liquid is not. The Rama allows relying on this for the other prohibitions in case of great loss, but not for meat with milk. The Pischei Teshuva (ס״ק ב) reports in the name of the Maharshal that if the mixing came about by way of cooking, the principle applies even to a liquid, and in the name of the Noda BiYehuda (Tinyana, Yoreh De’ah 49) that there is room for leniency in case of great loss.
Where the principle does not operate. Dry mixed with dry: no prohibition there makes the piece become neveila (and see siman 99). And a vessel that absorbed a prohibited substance: the principle is not applied to it, and sixty against what it absorbed suffices (Mordechai; see siman 98). And in practice — ask your rav.
The Pischei Teshuva (ס״ק א) and the part outside the broth. He reports, in the name of the Ran as cited by the Shach, that a piece standing in the pot — because of the vapour and moisture that fill it — has the milk spread through all of it, even the part that emerges from the broth. And he reports the Noda BiYehuda, who defines the scope of the Shach’s distinction between a fluid and a solid prohibited substance: where the prohibited thing adheres to the piece from the outset and has cooked together with it, the vapour and moisture of the pot cause it to spread through the whole. There is matter here for comparison with the laws of siman 105 on a solid prohibited substance.

6. A drop of milk on the wall — מפעפע, facing the food and facing the empty space

↩ Detailed explanation (level 1)

The text of the Mechaber and the Rama (seifim 5–6)

Seif 5. A drop of milk that fell from outside onto a pot standing by the fire: if it fell opposite the food, only sixty against the drop is needed, for it permeates inwards and it is as if it had fallen into the food. But if it fell at the empty place and permeates the thickness of the pot’s wall until close to the broth, to the point that there is not sixty there against the drop, that place in the pot has become forbidden; and if one pours out the food through the place that became forbidden, the food will become forbidden. The remedy is that one leave it so and not touch it until it cools. Gloss: and this only if the pot is old; but if it is new, in every case only sixty against the drop that fell on it is needed, as stated below in siman 94 regarding a spoon.

Seif 6. The world has taken the practice of forbidding when it fell on the wall, not opposite the broth — and this only when it falls on the side that is not facing the fire; but if it fell facing the fire it is permitted, for the fire burns it and dries it out (and then the pot too is permitted). And this only for a small amount, such as a drop; but if much fell, there is no permission even facing the fire, unless facing the broth and by sixty. Gloss: and then the pot is forbidden even if there is sixty in the food against the drop that fell; one pours the food out of it at once on the other side, not opposite the drop. And if another dish was cooked in the pot, its law is as the first time.

The foundation — what “permeating” means. Hot fat and moisture permeate: they penetrate the thickness of the wall and pass inwards. Hence two cases, and two regimes.

• Facing the broth — the drop permeates at once to the food, as if it had fallen into it: sixty against the drop suffices.
• Facing the empty space — it permeates the thickness of the wall up to near the broth; if there is not sixty there, that place in the wall becomes forbidden, and pouring through it forbids the food.

The remedy the Mechaber gives is a remedy of abstention: not to touch it until it cools.
The Taz’s “either way” (ס״ק י״ז). The Taz brings the reasoning of the Issur V’Heter (rule 31, in the name of the Semak), which proceeds by elimination: either the drop permeates through to the broth, and it is nullified there in sixty; or it does not permeate that far, and then by what would the pot be forbidden? But the Taz immediately draws a restrictive consequence: this reasoning permits only the food — the pot itself remains forbidden, and we do not treat the drop as having fallen into the food for every purpose.

But the Taz does not stop there: he at once brings the Maharshal (Pereq Gid ha-Nasheh, siman 37), for whom the pot itself is permitted מן הדין — one may still cook meat in it — and is forbidden only לכתחילה, because it would appear forbidden through the milk. And the Taz concludes that he holds this to be the main view:

An old pot and a new one · the side of the fire.
The caseThe law
Old pot, facing the empty space, away from the fire The practice has been to forbid that place (if there is not sixty there against the drop)
Facing the fire Permitted — the fire burns it and dries it out, and then the pot too is permitted
A new pot In every case sixty against the drop suffices (as with the spoon, siman 94)
Much fell (not a drop) No permission even facing the fire — only facing the broth and by sixty
Nafka mina in the pouring. The Rama adds, at the end of seif 6: where much has fallen, even if there is sixty in the food against the drop, the pot is forbidden; one pours the food out at once on the other side, not opposite the drop — and a second cooking in that pot falls under the same law as the first. And in practice — ask your rav.

7. Pressing need · תתאה גבר · pouring and a stream

↩ Detailed explanation (level 1)

The text of the Mechaber and the Rama (seif 7)

There is one who permits, in a pressing hour — such as Erev Shabbos — even not facing the broth and even not facing the fire, by means of sixty. Gloss: and so is the practice.

And if milk, or another boiling prohibited substance, was spilled on the ground and a hot pot was set upon it: if what was spilled is not next to the fire, it is only a second vessel; the pot is therefore forbidden, since it absorbs a little, but the food inside it is permitted, since the lower one prevails.

A stream running from a boiling pot into a cold pot: if the stream broke off before reaching the cold one, it too is a second vessel; if it did not break off, it is as a pouring, and the cold pot is forbidden if the hand recoils from the stream where it touches — but the food inside it is permitted, for a pouring forbids only the thickness of a peel. But if the pot is hot and is a first vessel, and all the more so if it stands next to the fire, then even if the stream is cold everything is forbidden: for the lower one prevails, and it is like cold poured into hot, where all is forbidden — as was explained above in siman 91.

A drop falling onto the lid of a pot has the law of one that fell onto the pot facing the broth — provided the pot has begun to boil, for then the steam rises continually, reaches the lid and descends from there into the broth.

The foundation — “the lower one prevails” and the degrees of heat. The whole root of this seif is the principle studied in siman 91: in a contact between a hot and a cold, it is the lower that prevails. Hence the three cases.

• Spilled on the ground, away from the fire: a second vessel, which causes only slight absorption — the pot is forbidden, the food permitted.
• A stream that broke off: a second vessel; a stream that did not break off: a pouring, which forbids only the thickness of a peel, if the hand recoils there.
• A first vessel, or next to the fire: even a cold stream forbids everything, for the hot one below prevails.
The drop on the lid. A drop that fell on the lid is treated as having fallen facing the broth — on condition that the pot has already begun to boil: the steam then rises to the lid and descends from there into the food, so that the lid is, for this calculation, continuous with the broth. It is by this clause that the siman passes to the next seif, that of steam.
Two refinements of the Pischei Teshuva. At his ס״ק ג he notes that wherever this siman says “the pot is forbidden”, if it is a metal pot, filling it with water and boiling it does not suffice to kasher it — for the outer face would not be treated; it must be immersed in its entirety in a larger cauldron (Magen Avraham, Orach Chaim 452). At his ס״ק ד he reports the Levushei Serad against those who permitted by means of ash placed beneath the stream: since the law of ash is itself disputed, one should not rely on it, except for a light prohibition. And in practice — ask your rav.

8. The chakira of steam — steam of liquids, steam of foods

↩ Detailed explanation (level 1)

The text of the Mechaber and the Rama (seif 8)

A milk pan placed in the stove beneath a meat pot: the steam rises, is absorbed into the pot and forbids it. Gloss: if there was milk in the pan, sixty is needed in the food of the pot against the milk in the pan (his own view). And all this speaks of an uncovered pan, the steam rising from the food itself to the pot above it (Aroch); and it also speaks of a closeness such that the hand recoils from the steam at the place where it touches the pot — but if the hand does not recoil from the steam, everything is permitted. Therefore one hangs meat to dry above pots of milk without fearing the steam that rises (Piskei Maharai, 103). And likewise, if the pan is covered, everything is permitted — like two pots that touch one another without forbidding one another by contact, and all the more so by steam (Mordechai, ch. 25). Nevertheless one should be careful in all this a priori.

The chakira — what is steam, and what is its power? The question this seif opens is what the power of steam to forbid depends upon. The Rama’s text sets two conditions, and they are not of the same nature: one concerns provenance — the pan must be uncovered, the steam rising from the food itself; the other concerns heat — the hand must recoil from the steam at the point of contact. Hence the question: is steam like the body of the food from which it rises, or is it only a carrier of heat?
The distinction of the Pri Megadim, reported by the Pischei Teshuva (ס״ק ו). The Pri Megadim derives from the Rambam (Tumas Ochlin 7:4) that the steam of a liquid is like the liquid itself, whereas that of a food is not. The chakira therefore bears not only on heat but on the nature of what is evaporating. The Pischei Teshuva himself draws the consequence, and he states it cautiously: in such a case, even if the hand recoils from the steam, it is possible that there is room to permit. He does not rule, and neither do we.
Covered — a kal vachomer from two pots. If the pan is covered, everything is permitted: two pots that touch do not forbid one another by contact alone, and steam, stopped by the lid, does less still. It is from this same reasoning that the permission to hang meat to dry above pots of milk emerges. And yet the Rama closes with a reservation: a priori, one should be careful in all this.

9. A tallow candle — חֵלֶב and not חָלָב

↩ Detailed explanation (level 1)

The text of the Mechaber (seif 9)

A tallow candle made like a wax candle, a drop of which fell onto a vessel: only scraping is required. But melted hot tallow, a drop of which fell onto a vessel: hagala is required.

The foundation — חֵלֶב and not חָלָב. A warning about reading, before any halakha: the printed text is unvocalised, and the same three letters carry here a different word from the one in all the preceding seifim. The word is read חֵלֶב — tallow, the forbidden fat of an animal — and not חָלָב, milk. Two cases follow:
• A candle of congealed tallow, dripping like cold wax → there is no absorption into the thickness, only a body resting on the surface → scraping suffices.
• Melted and hot tallow → this is boiling matter, which causes absorption → hagala is required.
Chakira — scraping against hagala. The root of the distinction is the heat of the contact, not the nature of the substance. In the congealed state there is neither real release nor real absorption, as with something cold: it is therefore enough to remove the body resting on the surface. In the melted and hot state the law is that of boiling matter, which causes absorption into the thickness of the vessel: hence hagala. The Pischei Teshuva (ס״ק ז–ח) extends these two cases: the one to kindling from a tallow candle, the other to a wick that fell onto a vessel.

10. Chakira and nafka mina for practice

↩ Detailed explanation (level 1)
The overall chakira of the siman. What is the measure that nullifies the taste of milk, and on what condition does the whole pot join it?
Nafka mina for practice, as the siman states it.
  1. We do not rely on the tasting of a non-Jew → sixty is required in every case (Rama, seif 1).
  2. Stirring or covering joins the whole pot only if done from the moment of the fall (Rama, seif 2 — “and so is the practice”).
  3. Chaticha naaseis neveila — the practice applies it to all prohibitions (Rama, seif 4), under the conditions of adhering or of the piece being entirely outside the broth — with the Shach (ס״ק י״ג) marking a צ״ע on the end of the gloss.
  4. A drop facing the empty space, away from the fire: the practice has been to forbid; facing the fire, the fire burns it; a new pot, sixty suffices.
  5. Steam — it forbids only where the pan is uncovered and the hand recoils; covered or distant, it is permitted, and a priori one should be careful.
And in practice — ask your rav.

11. Summary tables

↩ Detailed explanation (level 1)

Table — the modes in which the milk falls, and their law

The mode of contact The result The source
A kezayis of meat in a pot of milk Tasting of the קפילא, or sixty; and that piece is forbidden Mechaber, seif 1; Taz ס״ק א
Milk fell into the pot — without stirring Sixty within the piece itself; failing that, it alone is forbidden Mechaber and Rama, seif 2
Stirred or covered from the moment of the fall Everything joins for the sixty Mechaber and Rama, seif 2
A piece that became forbidden (ch.n.n.) The whole piece is neveila; sixty against all of it Mechaber, seifim 3–4; Shach
A drop facing the broth It permeates → sixty against the drop Mechaber, seif 5; Taz
A drop facing the empty space, away from the fire The practice has been to forbid that place Mechaber, seifim 5–6
Pouring / an unbroken stream Forbids the thickness of a peel; the food stays permitted (the lower prevails) Rama, seif 7
Steam (uncovered pan, hand recoils) Absorbed and forbidding; covered or distant — permitted Mechaber and Rama, seif 8; Pri Megadim in the P’T
A tallow candle Congealed — scraping; melted and hot — hagala Mechaber, seif 9; P’T

Table — the central machlokos of the siman

The subject First shita Second shita
Relying on the tasting of a non-Jew The Mechaber — one relies on the קפילא, even with less than sixty The Rama — one does not rely on it, and sixty is required in every case
Milk in milk — the absorbed prohibition Rashi and the Riva — in the smallest amount Rabbeinu Tam — nullified in sixty (and this is what we hold)
When does stirring join? Raavad and Maggid Mishneh — even without stirring, sixty suffices Tur and Rama — only if one stirred from the moment of the fall
Chaticha naaseis neveila The Mechaber — only for meat with milk The Rama — in all prohibitions, and mid’rabanan according to the Shach
The piece wholly or partly outside the broth R. Yitzchak — only wholly outside the broth Rashi — even part of it inside the broth (Shach
Wet in wet that fell into a permitted substance Mordechai, Rashba and Ran — sixty suffices, no ch.n.n. Maharshal — by way of cooking we say ch.n.n. (P’T
