📑 Outline of the synthesis

  1. The axiom: does the meat pot have a taste to give the milk?
  2. The 3 reflex questions: ben yomo · the dish or the pot · the lid
  3. The master grid: ben yomo vs after 24 h, and the status of the pot
  4. The 5 golden rules
  5. Mnemonic — the "KEDERA" memory aid
  6. The 4 classic pitfalls
  7. Recap of the single seif — line by line (Mehaber + Rama)
  8. Final flashcard

1. The axiom: does the meat pot have a taste to give the milk?

The starting point:

Siman 93 no longer deals with a food mixed with a forbidden substance, but with a pot (כלי) that has absorbed the taste of meat and which one wishes to reuse for milk. The Mehaber rules at once: "קְדֵרָה שֶׁבִּשְּׁלוּ בָּהּ בָּשָׂר, לֹא יְבַשְּׁלוּ בָּהּ חָלָב" — a pot in which meat was cooked, one shall not cook milk in it. The whole question is: is the pot ben yomo (used within 24 h)? If so, its absorbed taste is still "good" (נותן טעם) and it forbids the dish; if 24 h have passed, the taste has become "spoiled" (נותן טעם לפגם) and can no longer forbid the dish — but the pot itself remains forbidden for both meat and milk.
State of the potNature of the tasteResult on the dish
Ben yomo (cooked within 24 h, בְּתוֹךְ מֵעֵת לְעֵת)נותן טעם — "good" taste still active🔴 Forbidden if a taste is imparted
After 24 h (שָׁהָה מֵעֵת לְעֵת)נותן טעם לפגם — spoiled / degraded taste🟢 Dish permitted
The pot itself (כלי)Absorbed the forbidden substance🟡 Remains forbidden for both meat and milk
💡 The marker: this siman no longer speaks of "a drop fallen into the dish" (siman 92) but of a utensil re-emitting its absorbed taste. Everything depends on the age of the taste: fresh (ben yomo) it forbids, old (after 24 h) it forgives the dish. This is the foundation of our common practice: "כל הקדרות אינן בני יומן" — we presume utensils are not ben yomo, and food cooked by mistake remains permitted. But the pot, le-chatchila, never escapes its meat/milk status.

2. The 3 reflex questions

■ BEN YOMO? (תוך מעת לעת) — was the pot used for meat within the last 24 hours? If yes → its taste is נותן טעם, and milk cooked in it is forbidden if a taste is imparted.
↓ otherwise, what do we assess
■ AFTER 24 H → HOW MUCH TO ASSESS? (לשער נגד כל הקדרה) — after 24 h the taste is נותן טעם לפגם → the dish is permitted. But for the ben yomo, the Rama requires assessing the 60 against the whole pot (וצריך לשער נגד כל הקדרה), since we do not know how much it absorbed — hence, in practice, the prohibition of the ben yomo dish.
↓ we look at the utensil and its lid
■ THE POT AND THE LID? (כלי / כיסוי) — the pot itself remains forbidden for both meat and milk (but permitted for other foods if not ben yomo). The lid has the same status as the pot (דין כסוי קדרה כדין קדירה עצמה).

⚖ Assessing against the whole pot (Rama + Shach s.k. 1)

For a ben yomo pot, we do not assess the 60 against the emitted "absorbed" alone, but against the whole pot (לשער נגד כל הקדרה), since we do not know how much taste it had absorbed — which is often impossible, hence the de facto prohibition. The Shach (s.k. 1) specifies: if one knows how much was absorbed, one assesses only against the absorbed (cf. siman 92:5 הגה and 94:6); and he recalls the possibility "נחושתה דק ורחבה גדול" (thin metal and a large vessel).

3. The master grid: ben yomo vs after 24 h, and the status of the pot

An absolute must to memorize. Basis: Mehaber (single seif), read with the Rama's gloss, the Shach (s.k. 1) and the Taz (s.k. 1-2).

SituationDecisive criterionResult
Milk cooked in the ben yomo meat pot נותן טעם ("good" taste); 60 against the whole pot 🔴 Dish forbidden if a taste is imparted
Milk cooked in the pot after 24 h נותן טעם לפגם (spoiled taste) 🟢 Dish permitted; but the pot remains forbidden
The pot (not ben yomo) for other foods שאר דברים (Rivash 126 in the name of the Sma"k) 🟢 Permitted for other foods
The lid (כיסוי) of the pot = status of the pot itself 🟡 Same rule as the pot
Lid: chumra "always ben yomo" Custom (Rama: חומרא בלא טעם) 🔴 Treated as ben yomo even when it is not
Leniencies on this chumra (reason, Shabbat, הפסד) Another reason to permit / Shabbat need / loss 🟢 Permitted if the lid is not ben yomo
📌 Key reading: for the dish, first ask ben yomo or not (ben yomo → forbidden, after 24 h → permitted). For the utensil, remember it always stays forbidden meat/milk but permitted for other foods. And the lid follows the pot, with a חומרא of custom (always ben yomo) that yields before a reason, Shabbat or הפסד.

4. The 5 golden rules

  1. "קְדֵרָה שֶׁבִּשְּׁלוּ בָּהּ בָּשָׂר, לֹא יְבַשְּׁלוּ בָּהּ חָלָב". A meat pot does not serve le-chatchila for milk — and vice versa (Mehaber, single seif).
  2. Ben yomo → נותן טעם → forbidden. Cooked within 24 h, the taste is still "good" and forbids the dish if a taste is imparted (Mehaber).
  3. After 24 h → נותן טעם לפגם → dish permitted. The degraded taste can no longer forbid; but the pot remains forbidden meat/milk, permitted for other foods (Mehaber + Rama, Rivash 126).
  4. לשער נגד כל הקדרה. For the ben yomo, we assess the 60 against the whole pot, for want of knowing the absorbed volume (Rama + Shach s.k. 1).
  5. The lid follows the pot. Same status; the chumra "always ben yomo" is a custom (חומרא בלא טעם) that yields before a reason, Shabbat or הפסד (Rama).

5. Mnemonic — the "KEDERA" memory aid

"K-E-D-E-R-A" — after the קְדֵרָה of the seif
The lid / pot matrix — תתאה גבר (the lower one prevails)

6. The 4 classic pitfalls

❌ Pitfall 1 — Confusing the dish and the pot after 24 h: when 24 h have passed, the dish cooked by mistake is permitted (נותן טעם לפגם), but the pot does not "revert" to being meat-and-milk: it remains forbidden le-chatchila for both meat and milk. It is permitted only for other foods (Rivash 126 in the name of the Sma"k). Never read the dish's leniency as a leniency on the utensil.
❌ Pitfall 2 — Assessing the 60 against the emitted taste alone: for a ben yomo pot, we do not assess against the presumed absorbed, but against the whole pot (וצריך לשער נגד כל הקדרה), since we do not know the absorbed volume — often impossible, hence the de facto prohibition (Rama + Shach s.k. 1). We assess against the absorbed alone only if we know how much was absorbed (cf. siman 92:5 הגה, 94:6).
❌ Pitfall 3 — Forgetting the lid, or overdoing it: the lid has the same status as the pot (דין כסוי קדרה כדין קדירה עצמה). Some are stricter and treat it as if it were always ben yomo — the custom in certain places, which the Rama follows "even though it is a חומרא without reason." But this chumra yields before another reason to permit, a Shabbat need or a הפסד (loss). The Taz (s.k. 2, in the name of the Rashal) limits it to narrow/hollow lids impossible to wipe; a wide lid that can be wiped → permitted if not ben yomo.
❌ Pitfall 4 — Hot / cold lid and תתאה גבר: a meat lid placed on a milk pot (or the reverse) — it is the lower one that prevails. Both hot with food → both forbidden. Cold lid, hot pot that begins to sweat (התחיל להזיע) → both forbidden. Hot lid, cold potall permitted, with קליפה of the food if possible. No food in the pot → all permitted: it is like two pots that touched each other (שתי קדירות שנגעו זו בזו).

Mehaberקדרה שבישלו בה בשרA pot in which meat was cooked: one shall not cook milk in it. Cooked within 24 h (ben yomo) → אסור בנותן טעם (forbidden if a taste is imparted). 24 h passed → נותן טעם לפגם, the dish is permitted; but the pot remains forbidden (neither meat nor milk).
Rama 1לשער נגד כל הקדרהFor the ben yomo, one must assess the 60 against the whole pot — we do not know the absorbed volume (וצריך לשער נגד כל הקדרה).
Rama 2שאר דבריםThe pot that is not ben yomo remains permitted to cook other foods (שאר דברים מותר — Rivash 126 in the name of the Sma"k).
Rama 3The lid's lawThe lid has the same status as the pot itself (דין כסוי קדרה כדין קדירה עצמה).
Rama 4The lid's chumraSome are stricter on the lid, treating it as ben yomo even when it is not; the custom is followed "even though it is חומרא בלא טעם." But where there is another reason, a Shabbat need or a הפסד → one permits if the lid is not ben yomo.
Rama 5Hot lid / pot — תתאה גברHot meat lid on a milk pot (or the reverse): both hot with food → both forbidden; cold lid + hot pot that sweats → both forbidden (תתאה גבר); hot lid + cold pot → all permitted, קליפה of the food if possible; no food → all permitted (שתי קדירות שנגעו זו בזו).

  1. Ben yomo? Within 24 h → נותן טעם → dish forbidden (60 against the whole pot). After 24 h → נותן טעם לפגם → dish permitted.
  2. Dish or pot? The dish (after 24 h) is permitted; the pot stays forbidden meat/milk, permitted for other foods.
  3. Lid? Hot or cold? Follows the pot (chumra of custom). Both hot = forbidden; hot lid + cold pot = permitted + קליפה; no food = permitted.
