Who is the Admour HaZaken — מי הוא אדמו״ר הזקן
Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi (1745–1812), known as the Admour HaZaken ("the elder Rebbe"), is the founder of the Chabad chassidic dynasty. A direct talmid of the Maggid of Mezeritch and a descendant of the Maharal of Prague, he authored two monumental works that form the foundation of all Chabad thought:
- The Tanya (ספר התניא) — the fundamental exposition of the Jewish neshamah, avodas Hashem, teshuvah and mystical union. First published in 1796.
- The Shulchan Aruch HaRav (שלחן ערוך אדמו״ר הזקן) — a complete and autonomous Shulchan Aruch, composed by directive of the Maggid, covering the entirety of practical halacha with unparalleled talmudic rigor.
These two works — נגלה ונסתר, the revealed and the hidden — are inseparable in his shitah: halacha together with its underlying reasons, the טעמי המצוות, and the inner dimension of Torah, unified in a single act of learning.
His unique shitah in pesak — דרכו בפסק הלכה
The SA HaRav is not a commentary on the Mechaber. It is an autonomous and complete Shulchan Aruch, structured by siman and seif like the work of the Mechaber, but which:
- Follows the classical hierarchy of pesak: Gemara → Rishonim → Beis Yosef + Rama → final ruling.
- Provides the טעמים (halachic reasons) — something rare at this density among other poskim.
- Contains a קונטרס אחרון at the bottom of the page — an appendix of pilpul-style discussions when sources contradict; this is the Rav's own pilpul.
- Was rewritten in מהדורא בתרא (second edition) on certain simanim — showing that the Rav revisited his own positions in light of later study, a sign of rare intellectual integrity.
Why a complete and autonomous Shulchan Aruch — ולא רק פירוש
The Admour HaZaken composed the SA HaRav by directive of the Maggid of Mezeritch. The הקדמת בני המחבר — the preface of the author's sons (the Mitteler Rebbe and his brother R. Chaim Avraham) to the printed edition — explains why: a Shulchan Aruch was needed that would speak directly to the talmid, that would not merely state the conclusions but would also transmit the reasoning and the structure of the halachic logic.
Practical consequence: for Chabad, the SA HaRav is a first-rank authority — not one opinion among others but the binding posek of reference.
The Rebbe's directive — הוראת כ״ק אדמו״ר
The Rebbe (Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the 7th Chabad Rebbe) explicitly insisted on numerous occasions on the importance of learning the SA HaRav seriously. In several sichos and igros, he established the SA HaRav as the practical halachic authority of Chabad, and encouraged every Chabad ben Torah to learn it regularly.
The classical rule in Chabad — אדמו״ר הזקן הוא הפוסק האחרון
A formulation frequently repeated in the Chabad mesorah:
אדמו״ר הזקן הוא הפוסק האחרון לחב״ד.
The Admour HaZaken is the final posek for Chabad.
Oral mesorah — repeated in the sichos and the kisvei of the Rebbe
This does not mean that other poskim are ignored — on the contrary, the Chabad shitah insists on knowledge of dissenting opinions (Mechaber, Rama, Mishnah Berurah, Sephardic Acharonim). But when there is divergence and a practical decision must be made, the position of the SA HaRav prevails for the Chabad chassid.
