1. The Central Axiom

Universal principle of Siman א׳:

The very first siman of the Shulchan Aruch deals not with a prohibition but with a posture of the soul: rising with strength for the service of the Creator (יתגבר כארי) under the permanent gaze of the King (שויתי ה' לנגדי תמיד). The rest of the day flows from this awareness. The halakha of rising is not a schedule but an orientation of the heart.
💡 The universal key: "דע לפני מי אתה עומד" — Know before Whom you stand.
  • On waking → rise with זריזות, without dawdling (יתגבר כארי)
  • All day → the awareness that the King sees all (שויתי), alone as in public
  • In the morning → amirat korbanot, Akeda, Mann, Ten Statements (in private), by day

2. Master table of the 9 seifim

SeifTopicCore of the ruleGloss / source
א' יתגבר כארי + שויתי Rise with strength for one's Creator, "awaken the dawn". Permanent awareness of the King who sees all. Tur · Rama (zman tefila; שויתי — Moreh Nevuchim III:52)
ב' המשכים להתחנן Aim for the hours when the משמרות change (1/3, 2/3, end of night): tefila over the churban is favored. Mechaber · tikkun chatzot
ג' מיצר ודואג Every ירא שמים must grieve over the churban of the Beit haMikdash. Mechaber
ד' מעט בכוונה Better a little supplication with kavana than much without. Quality over quantity. Mechaber
ה' אמירת פרשיות Good to say the Akeda, the Mann, the Ten Statements, and Olah/Mincha/Shelamim/Chatat/Asham. Mechaber · Rama (Ten Statements in yaḥid — Rashba 184)
ו' פרשיות הקרבנות Say the parshiyot of the korbanot only by day. Mechaber (cf. siman 47, seif 13)
ז' יהי רצון After parshat haOlah: "as if I had offered an olah". Same after Mincha/Shelamim (nedava). Mechaber
ח' ושחט אותו Say with the korbanot: "ושחט אותו על ירך המזבח צפונה לפני ה'". Mechaber
ט' מנהג ההוספות Minhag: some add Kiyor, Terumat haDeshen, haTamid, mizbeach haKetoret, samanei haKetoret. Mechaber (יש נוהגין)

⚖ The structure of the siman at a glance

Two movements: (1) the posture of the soul at rising — seifim א'–ד' (zerizut, awareness of the King, mourning the churban, kavana); (2) amirat korbanot of the morning — seifim ה'–ט' (what to say, in yaḥid for the Ten Statements, by day, with the yehi ratzon).

3. The 2 pillars — יתגבר כארי and שויתי

PillarSource textMaster ideaDevelopment
יתגבר כארי
Zerizut
יתגבר כארי לעמוד בבוקר לעבודת בוראו שיהא הוא מעורר השחר Overcome laziness on waking, "be the one who awakens the dawn". Rama: do not delay beyond the time when the tsibbur prays (Tur).
שויתי ה' לנגדי תמיד
Permanent awareness
שויתי ה' לנגדי תמיד הוא כלל גדול בתורה A great principle of the Torah: a man alone at home ≠ before a great king. All the more so when he knows the King sees his deeds. Rama, after the Moreh Nevuchim (III:52): the shame and submission in awe of Hashem, without shame from the scoffers.
📚 The chidush of the Rama: the Rama opens the entire Shulchan Aruch not with a rule of timing but with שויתי ה' לנגדי תמיד — "כלל גדול בתורה ובמעלות הצדיקים". It is the yesod of yirat shamayim: private conduct must equal public conduct, for "אם יסתר איש במסתרים ואני לא אראנו נאום ה'".

4. The gradation of משמרות — Decision Tree

Q: You rise at night to pour out your heart before your Creator — at what hour?
🟢 End of the first third of the night — Change of משמרה. Tefila over the churban is favored.
🟢 End of the second third of the night — Change of משמרה. Auspicious hour (seif ב').
🟢 End of the night (before dawn) — Change of משמרה. Auspicious hour.
🟡 Grieve over the churban — Every ירא שמים must מיצר ודואג (seif ג'), even outside these hours.
🔴 Multiply supplications without kavana — To avoid: מעט בכוונה is better (seif ד').

The meaning of tikkun chatzot

Seif ב' grounds the practice of tikkun chatzot: it is not an arbitrary hour but the moment when "the watches change" in the upper worlds. Tefila over the חורבן and the גלות at these hours is "רצויה" — particularly favored.

5. Amirat korbanot — overview

#What one saysKey questionPesak
העקדה · המן Good to say? Yes (seif ה') — to awaken the merit of the avot and trust in parnassa
עשרת הדברות In tsibbur? No — only in yaḥid (Rama, Rashba 184)
Olah · Mincha · Shelamim · Chatat · Asham When to say them? Only by day (seif ו', cf. siman 47:13)
יהי רצון After what? After Olah ("כאלו הקרבתי עולה"); same for Mincha/Shelamim (nedava) — seif ז'
ושחט אותו על ירך המזבח צפונה To say with? With the korbanot (seif ח')
Kiyor · Terumat haDeshen · Tamid · Ketoret Obligatory? Minhag — "יש נוהגין" (seif ט')
📚 "ונשלמה פרים שפתינו": in the absence of the Beit haMikdash, reading the parshiyot of the korbanot stands in place of the offering itself. This is the meaning of the יהי רצון of seif ז': "שיהא זה חשוב ומקובל כאלו הקרבתי עולה".

6. The Ten Statements in yaḥid — Decision Tree

Q: You want to say the עשרת הדברות in the morning — where?
🟢 Alone (yaḥid) — Permitted every day (seif ה', Rama).
🔴 In tsibbur — Forbidden: one does not fix them in the public tefila (Rashba siman 184), so as not to give the minim a pretext to claim that only the Ten Statements are the Torah.

7. Golden rules — Memory Aids

The 5 golden rules of Siman א'
  • Rise like a lionיתגבר כארי: zerizut overcomes laziness.
  • Hashem is before youשויתי: alone as in public, the King sees.
  • Don't miss the zman — Rama: do not delay beyond the time the tsibbur prays.
  • Kavana > quantityמעט בכוונה: little but sincere.
  • Korbanot by day — the parshiyot, only by day; the Ten Statements, only alone.

8. Mnemonic — Memory Aids

Acrostic: L-E-V-E-R — the 5 pillars of the morning conduct
  • Lion — יתגבר כארי, rise with strength for one's Creator
  • Ever-present — שויתי ה' לנגדי תמיד, the King sees all
  • Vigils of the night — משמרות, tikkun chatzot over the churban
  • Entire kavana — מעט בכוונה is better than much without
  • Recital of korbanot — by day, with the yehi ratzon, Ten Statements in yaḥid
3 foundational verses to memorize:
  • שויתי ה' לנגדי תמיד — Tehilim 16:8 (the great principle of the Torah)
  • אם יסתר איש במסתרים ואני לא אראנו נאום ה' — Yirmeyahu 23:24 (the King sees in secret)
  • ונשלמה פרים שפתינו — Hoshea 14:3 (speech in place of the offering)

9. Pitfalls to Avoid

❌ Pitfall 1: Reducing יתגבר כארי to "getting up early".
→ The heart of it is not the hour but the strength against laziness, for the service of the Creator. The Rama only adds a safeguard: do not delay beyond the zman tefila of the tsibbur.
❌ Pitfall 2: Believing that שויתי concerns only prayer.
→ It is כלל גדול בתורה: it governs all conduct, especially private conduct — "a man's conduct alone at home must equal that before a great king". At work, alone, everywhere.
❌ Pitfall 3: Saying the עשרת הדברות aloud in the public tefila.
→ The Rama (Rashba 184) forbids it in tsibbur. Only in yaḥid. Do not confuse private use with public fixing.
❌ Pitfall 4: Multiplying supplications to "do more".
→ Seif ד': טוב מעט תחנונים בכוונה מהרבות בלא כוונה. Better a little with kavana. Quantity without heart is worth nothing.
❌ Pitfall 5: Saying the parshiyot of the korbanot at night, before dawn.
→ Seif ו': לא יאמר אלא ביום — only by day (cf. siman 47:13), since the offering itself was made only by day.
