1. The Central Axiom

Universal principle of Siman ב׳:

Dressing is no trivial act but the direct continuation of the שויתי ה' לנגדי תמיד of the preceding siman. The most ordinary act of the morning — putting on one's shirt, lacing one's shoes, covering one's head — is governed by two demands: tsniut (never to uncover oneself, even when alone) and the awareness that מלא כל הארץ כבודו (the glory of God fills the whole earth). Dressing is an orientation of the heart before it is a sequence of gestures.
💡 The universal key: "אל יאמר הנני בחדרי חדרים מי רואני" — Let no one say "I am in the innermost chamber, who sees me?".
  • At rising → dress while still lying down, to be already covered when standing (tsniut)
  • Even alone → מלא כל הארץ כבודו: the King is present everywhere
  • The order of the gestures → priority of the right (ימין), covering the head, care of the body

2. Master table of the 6 seifim

SeifTopicHeart of the ruleGloss / source
א' לא ילבש חלוקו מיושב One does not put on his shirt while seated; rather he takes his shirt and inserts his head and arms into it while still lying down, so that when he rises he is already covered. Mehaber (Tur)
ב' מלא כל הארץ כבודו Let him not say "I am in the innermost chamber, who sees me?" — for the glory of the Holy One fills the whole earth. Continuation of the שויתי of the preceding siman. Mehaber
ג' ללובשו כדרכו One is careful to wear his shirt the proper way, not turning the inside out. Mehaber
ד' סדר נעילת המנעלים Put on the right shoe first without lacing it; then put on the left and lace it; then return and lace the right. (The right in the act, the left in the lacing — the place of the tefilin.) Mehaber · Rama (shoes without laces → right first — Tosfot Shabbat 61a)
ה' חליצת המנעלים When removing his shoes, he removes the left first. Mehaber
ו' קומה זקופה · כיסוי הראש · נקיות Do not walk with a haughty bearing; do not walk 4 amot with the head uncovered; check one's bodily needs (נקביו). Mehaber · Rama (cover the whole body, do not walk barefoot — Or Zarua; relieve oneself morning and evening — Hagahot Maimoni, Hil. Deot ch. 5)

⚖ The structure of the siman at a glance

Two movements: (1) the tsniut of dressing — seifim א'–ג' (dress while lying down, the awareness of מלא כל הארץ כבודו even when alone, wear one's garments the proper way); (2) the order and the bearing — seifim ד'–ו' (shoes right/left, removal, covered head, humble posture, cleanliness of the body).

3. The 2 pillars — tsniut and מלא כל הארץ כבודו

PillarSource textMaster ideaDevelopment
צניעות הגוף
Dressing while lying down
יקח חלוקו ויכניס בו ראשו וזרועותיו בעודנו שוכב Never to expose one's body, even for an instant. Enter one's shirt while lying down, in order to rise already covered. The concrete gesture of tsniut: modesty is not only before others but a constant inner quality.
מלא כל הארץ כבודו
Presence everywhere
אל יאמר הנני בחדרי חדרים מי רואני כי הקב״ה מלא כל הארץ כבודו The argument "I am alone, who sees me?" has no worth: the glory of God fills the whole earth. Direct continuation of שויתי ה' לנגדי תמיד (preceding siman): private conduct must equal public conduct.
📚 The yesod of the siman: seif ב' makes dressing the first concrete field of application of the great principle שויתי. Where the preceding siman laid down the principle ("the King sees"), this one translates it into a gesture: even in חדרי חדרים, one covers oneself, because מלא כל הארץ כבודו.

4. The order of the shoes — Decision Tree

Q: You put on your shoes in the morning — in what order?
🟢 ① Right foot — One puts on the right first (priority of the ימין), without lacing it.
🟢 ② Left foot — One puts on the left, and laces it (out of regard for the place of the tefilin on the left arm).
🟢 ③ Back to the right — One returns and laces the right. Thus: the act on the right, the lacing on the left.
🟡 Shoes without laces (Rama) — Our shoes having no lacing → one simply puts on the right first (Tosfot Shabbat 61a).
🔴 Removal — There one reverses: the left first (seif ה').

The sense of the right/left order

The Gemara (Shabbat 61a) reconciles two values: the importance of the right (חשיבות הימין) commands serving it first in the act of putting on; but the place of the tefilin on the left arm commands giving the left the priority of lacing. The double gesture honors both. At removal (seif ה') one takes off the left first — inverse symmetry.

5. Chalitsa — removing the shoes (overview)

#GestureKey questionPesak
Putting on Which foot first? The right (seif ד') — חשיבות הימין
Lacing Which foot to lace first? The left (seif ד') — מקום תפילין
Removing Which foot to remove first? The left (seif ה') — the honor of the right is preserved to the end
Modern shoes Without laces, what to do? Put on the right first (Rama, Tosfot Shabbat 61a)
📚 The overall logic: the right keeps priority when one does (putting on, and it remains shod last at removal); the left keeps priority in the knot (the lacing) out of regard for the tefilin. One conduct, two honors preserved.

6. Covered head, posture, cleanliness — seif vav

Q: You rise and stand upright — how do you conduct yourself?
🔴 Haughty bearing — Forbidden to walk בקומה זקופה: pride is excluded, for מלא כל הארץ כבודו.
🟢 Covered head — Do not walk 4 amot בגילוי הראש; cover the head (and, Rama, the whole body).
🟢 Shod feet — Do not walk barefoot (Rama, Or Zarua).
🟢 Cleanliness of the body — Check one's needs (יבדוק נקביו); accustom oneself to relieve oneself morning and evening.

זריזות ונקיות — cleanliness as discipline

The Rama concludes the siman with וירגיל עצמו לפנות בוקר וערב שהוא זריזות ונקיות (Hagahot Maimoni, Hil. Deot ch. 5): to accustom oneself to relieve oneself morning and evening pertains both to zerizut (alacrity) and nekiut (cleanliness) — a prelude to the care of the body before the tefila (cf. siman 92).

7. Golden rules — Memory Aid

The 5 golden rules of Siman ב׳
  • Dress while lying downבעודנו שוכב: to be covered before rising, that is tsniut.
  • The King sees everywhereמלא כל הארץ כבודו: no "no one sees me".
  • The proper way — wear one's garments כדרכו, without turning the inside out.
  • Right first — put on the right, lace the left, remove the left.
  • Cover, do not exalt yourself, be clean — covered head, humble posture, נקיות morning and evening.

8. Mnemonic — Memory Aid

Acrostic: D-R-E-S-S — the 5 pillars of the morning dressing
  • Down when dressing — בעודנו שוכב, dress while lying down, already covered.
  • Regarded everywhere — מלא כל הארץ כבודו, even alone in the innermost chamber.
  • Even side out — ללובשו כדרכו, without turning the inside out.
  • Start with the right — put on the right, lace the left (tefilin).
  • Self-respect of the body — covered head, humble posture, נקיות morning and evening.
3 foundational principles to memorize:
  • מלא כל הארץ כבודו — Yeshayahu 6:3 (the glory of God fills the whole earth)
  • חשיבות הימין — the priority of the right in the act (Shabbat 61a)
  • מקום תפילין — the priority of the left in the lacing (the arm of the tefilin)

9. Pitfalls to Avoid

❌ Pitfall 1: Believing that tsniut applies only before others.
→ False. Seif ב' targets precisely חדרי חדרים — the most complete privacy. מלא כל הארץ כבודו: one covers oneself even when entirely alone.
❌ Pitfall 2: Putting on one's shirt seated or standing, uncovered.
→ Seif א': one puts it on בעודנו שוכב, while still lying down, head and arms inside, in order to rise already covered.
❌ Pitfall 3: Reversing right and left with the shoes.
→ One puts on the right first (חשיבות הימין) but laces the left first (מקום תפילין); one removes the left first. Do not confuse the three gestures.
❌ Pitfall 4: Walking with the head uncovered "for just a few steps".
→ Seif ו': לא ילך ד' אמות בגילוי הראש — not even 4 amot. The Rama broadens it: cover the whole body, do not walk barefoot.
❌ Pitfall 5: Reducing קומה זקופה to a mere question of posture.
→ It is pride that is targeted: walking haughtily denies מלא כל הארץ כבודו. The humility of the body reflects the awareness of the King.
