This siman (סעיף אחד) settles what one who recites two Amidot in succession must do — כגון שחרית ומוסף, or a תשלומין for a forgotten prayer. 📚 The yesod of the שיעור: the measure of waiting is כדי הילוך ד׳ אמות — the time it takes to walk four cubits. It is the same marker as the end of the Amida: one who steps back three paces does not return to his place until he has waited כדי הילוך ד׳ אמות (cf. סי׳ קכ״ג). It is not necessarily an actual walking but a span of time: the Alter Rebbe specifies דהיינו כדי הילוך ד׳ אמות — this waiting suffices, whether he remained in place or walked.

📚 The yesod of the טעם: why wait? כדי שתהא דעתו מיושבת להתפלל בלשון תחינה — prayer is supplication (תחנונים) and a plea for mercy ; to run two Amidot together without a pause is to pray the second without a settled mind, as by rote. The waiting makes his mind מיושבת and lets him pray בלשון תחינה.
