✦ ❖ ✦
This siman teaches the meaning of the blessing רפאנו (the blessing of healing): although the verse from which it is drawn (רפאני ה׳ וארפא) is in the singular, we say it in the plural (רפאנו ה׳ ונרפא). For as a rule one does not convert a verse from singular to plural (אין מכנין יחיד לרבים) — but only when one intends to read it (בזמן שמתכוין לקרות) ; דרך תפלה ובקשה מותר, in supplication it is permitted. Yet a מזמור שלם (complete psalm), אסור לשנות. Hebrew text, fluent English translation and explanation of the seif, with a section of practical points.

The fourth of the requests of the Amida is the blessing of healing (רפאנו ה׳ ונרפא). Its opening echoes a verse of Jeremiah — but in the plural, whereas the verse is in the singular (רפאני ה׳ וארפא). The siman gives the reason: one does not convert a verse to the plural when one intends to read it as Scripture, but one may in prayer and supplication — for the prayer is that of the whole community. We study here at the level of principle; for personal conduct, one refers to the custom and to the ruling of the Rav.

A. The meaning of the blessing רפאנו — the seif
פֵּרוּשׁ בִּרְכַּת רְפָאֵנוּ — the meaning of the blessing רפאנו — three ideas in a single seif: we say רפאנו ה׳ ונרפא in the plural although the verse is in the singular ; for as a rule אין מכנין אותו לרבים (one does not convert a verse from singular to plural), but this applies only בזמן שמתכוין לקרות (when one intends to read it), whereas דרך תפלה ובקשה מותר ; yet a מזמור שלם (complete psalm), אסור לשנות from singular to plural or the reverse.
רפאנו ה׳ ונרפא, אף על פי שהכתוב ליחיד אין מכנין אותו לרבים — הני מילי בזמן שמתכוין לקרות, אבל כשאומר אותו דרך תפלה ובקשה מותר. ומכל מקום אם אומר מזמור שלם אסור לשנות מלשון יחיד לרבים או להיפך.
The seif: « רפאנו ה׳ ונרפא » (heal us, Hashem, and we shall be healed) — although the verse is in the singular, one does not convert it to the plural: this applies only when one intends to read it (בזמן שמתכוין לקרות) ; but when one says it as prayer and supplication (דרך תפלה ובקשה), it is permitted to change. And nevertheless, if one recites a complete psalm (מזמור שלם), it is forbidden to change from singular to plural or the reverse.
רפאנו — the collective wording
The blessing of healing opens with the words of the prophet: רפאני ה׳ וארפא (Jeremiah 17:14) — "heal me, Hashem, and I shall be healed." Yet in the Amida we say רפאנו ה׳ ונרפא — "heal us." We do not attribute it to oneself alone: the prayer is that of the whole community of Israel. Hence the question: how could one pass from the singular of the verse to the plural of the prayer?
אין מכנין יחיד לרבים — one does not alter the verse
There is a rule: אין מכנין אותו לרבים — a verse written in the singular, one does not "transpose" it to the plural (nor the reverse). But the Choulhan Aroukh at once specifies the scope of this rule: הני מילי בזמן שמתכוין לקרות — it applies only when one intends to read or recite the verse as it stands, as the word of Scripture. There, one preserves the exact person of the text.
דרך תפלה ובקשה — in prayer, it is permitted to change
Here is the decisive point: אבל כשאומר אותו דרך תפלה ובקשה מותר. When one does not "read" the verse but prays and supplicates with it, one may adapt the wording to the need of the prayer — and so say רפאנו (plural) even though the verse says רפאני (singular). For prayer is not a reading: it is a request shaped according to the one who offers it.
מזמור שלם — a complete psalm is not modified
The seif ends with a limit: ומכל מקום אם אומר מזמור שלם אסור לשנות מלשון יחיד לרבים או להיפך. The permission concerns only a single verse said in supplication. But if one recites a complete psalm (מזמור שלם) as it stands, it is forbidden to change its person — neither from singular to plural, nor from plural to singular: one does not reshape a psalm recited in its entirety.
The siman in one sentence: we say רפאנו (plural) although the verse רפאני is in the singular, for אין מכנין יחיד לרבים applies only בזמן שמתכוין לקרות ; דרך תפלה ובקשה מותר to adapt the wording ; but a מזמור שלם, אסור לשנות from singular to plural or the reverse.
Practical points
Point 1 — The communal prayer
Situation: one recites the Amida and reaches the blessing of healing, רפאנו ה׳ ונרפא. Why in the plural?
Conduct: one asks for healing in the plural — not for oneself alone, but for all Israel. The prayer fixed by our Sages is that of the community ; that is why, even when praying for a personal need, one keeps the plural wording as it was instituted. For any detail, one follows one's Rav.
Point 2 — Reading or supplicating
Situation: may one change a verse from singular to plural (or the reverse) when inserting it into one's prayer?
Conduct: it all depends on the intention. If one reads the verse as the word of Scripture (מתכוין לקרות), one does not alter it: אין מכנין אותו לרבים. But if one says it in supplication (דרך תפלה ובקשה), one may adapt it to the need of the request. The reservation: a complete psalm is not reshaped. For the practical application, one follows one's Rav.
Point 3 — One who has a sick person at home
Situation: someone has a sick person in his house (מי שיש לו חולה בתוך ביתו). May he pray for him in the blessing רפאנו?
Conduct: because the blessing is said in supplication (and not as mere reading), one may include a prayer for one's sick person — the same logic as דרך תפלה ובקשה מותר. The precise details (the wording to add, the moment) belong to the poskim and to custom ; for the conduct, one follows one's Rav.
