This siman (ה׳ סעיפים) settles how the community builds and honors its בית הכנסת. A single yesod: ① the building is a charge of the כלל — כופין בני העיר זה את זה to build it. ② The place must be elevated above the houses of the city, כל עיר שגגותיה גבוהים מבית הכנסת סופה ליחרב (שבת י״א.). ③ Its light, its פתח and its בימה serve the sanctity of the « מקדש מעט » and the prayer turned toward the ארון.

💡 The universal key: the whole siman settles a single question — how does one build and honor the בית הכנסת, the mikdash me'at? Five seifim govern the conduct:

The whole siman rests on a single yesod: to build and honor the בית הכנסת. Hence (①) the communal charge — כופין בני העיר זה את זה לבנות בית הכנסת; (②) the height — ומגביהין אותו עד שיהיה גבוה מכל בתי העיר, and one compels מי שהגביה ביתו to lower it; (③) the light and orientation — צריך אור גדול, and the פתח כנגד הצד שמתפללין בו, the בימה באמצע. As for the height: אין בונין בית הכנסת אלא בגבהה של עיר ומגביהין אותו עד שיהיה גבוה מכל בתי העיר שמשתמשים בהם — it is built at the high point, higher than the dwelling houses (Shabbat 11a « כל עיר שגגותיה גבוהים מבית הכנסת סופה ליחרב »), and one does not reckon decorative towers; and מי שהגביה ביתו יותר מבית הכנסת יש אומרים שכופין אותו להשפילו. In the שעת הדחק and אימת מלכות the Rama permits praying in a house even with a dwelling above it, provided it is kept clean.

As for the entrance: אין פותחין פתח בית הכנסת אלא כנגד הצד שמתפללין בו באותה העיר — if one prays toward the west one opens to the east, כדי שישתחוו מן הפתח נגד הארון שהוא ברוח שמתפללין נגדו. And the Rama: ועושין בימה באמצע בית הכנסת שיעמוד עליה הקורא בתורה וישמעו כלם, and the elders sit facing the people, the people facing the Kodesh (טור).
