This siman teaches the way of pouring water on the hands: one raises the hands (הַגְבָּהַת הַיָּדַיִם) so the water does not flow past the wrist and return to defile the hands ; one rubs the hands one against the other (שפשוף) ; there is no washing by halves (אין נטילה לחצאין) ; one may wash both hands together ; and the key that recurs throughout: pouring a revi'it at once (רביעית בבת אחת) removes any fear of impure water. Hebrew text, fluent English translation and explanation of the י׳ seifim, with a section of practical cases.

Netilat yadayim depends not only on the water but on how it is poured. The previous siman (161) dealt with חציצה ; this one describes the gesture: raising the hands, rubbing, pouring in one or several stages, and preventing the water already poured — which has become impure (מים טמאים) — from returning onto the hands. One key runs through the whole siman: pouring a revi'it at once (רביעית בבת אחת) makes the hands pure with no second waters and no precautions. We study here at the level of principle; for personal conduct, one refers to the custom and to the ruling of the Rav.

A. הגבהת הידים — raising the hands

מַיִם רִאשׁוֹנִים and מַיִם טְמֵאִים — when one pours a small quantity of water (less than a revi'it) on a soiled or impure hand, that water becomes impure from the hand. The whole siman flows from this: one must prevent this impure water from returning onto the part already washed. Two remedies recur: second waters (מים שניים) that purify the first, or — better — a revi'it at once (רביעית בבת אחת), which creates no impure water at all.

Séif 1 — raising the fingertips

Séif 1: one who washes his hands must raise them upward — the fingertips (ראשי אצבעותיו) — so that the water does not flow past the wrist joint, return, and defile the hands. This is when he does not wash the whole hand up to where the hand meets the forearm ; but if he washes up to there, he need not raise the hands. Likewise, if he poured a revi'it over both hands at once, since there is then no impure water, he need not raise the hands ; and likewise one who immerses his hands need not raise them.
The gesture. When one pours little water, the water flowing toward the wrist becomes impure ; if the hands tilt downward, that water returns onto the fingers and defiles them. One therefore raises the fingertips. Three cases are exempt: washing the whole hand up to the wrist, pouring a revi'it at once (רביעית בפעם אחת), or immersing the hands — for then אין שם מים טמאים, there is no impure water.

B. סדר הנתינות והשפשוף — the order of pourings and the rubbing

Séif 2 — two and three pourings ; rubbing the hands

Séif 2: one who washes his hands pours a little of the revi'it to remove dirt and anything that interposes ; then he pours a second time — and these waters too are impure — then a third time to purify the water on the hands. But if the hands have no dirt or interposing substance, he pours over both hands a revi'it at once and needs no second waters.
One, two or three times. If the hands are soiled, one pours first a little (קצת מהרביעית) to clean, then a second water (still impure), then a third to purify — hence the custom of three pourings. If the hands are clean, a revi'it at once suffices, with no second waters. And the Rama adds: הנוטל ידיו צריך לשפשפם זו בזו — one must rub the hands one against the other, so the water reaches their entire surface.

Séif 3 — אין נטילה לחצאין: no washing by halves

Séif 3: if he washed part of his hand and then added and washed the rest of his hand, his hand remains impure as it was, since there is no washing by halves. But if there still remains on the part washed first enough moisture to moisten another (טופח על מנת להטפיח), it is pure. This concerns the first waters ; but for the second waters, one may wash part of the hands and then add on the rest.
All at once. In the first waters, the hand is washed at one time: if one washes only part and then completes it, it remains impure — אין נטילה לחצאין. Exception: if enough water טופח על מנת להטפיח (able to moisten another) remains on the first part, the addition joins it and it is pure. This stringency applies only to the first waters ; the second may be done in stages.

Séif 4 — rubbing on the other hand before it is washed

Séif 4: if he poured water on one hand and rubbed it against the other, his washing is not valid, even if he afterward poured over both hands ; for the water poured on one hand became impure, and by rubbing, it defiled the other. summary: it is therefore better that another pour for him ; failing that, let him hold the vessel by his fingertips and pour over both hands at once, or a revi'it over each ; for one who pours a revi'it at once needs no second waters, like an immersion. And if he washed each hand from a revi'it, none of this is necessary.
Do not defile the other hand. If one pours a little water on one hand and rubs it against the other before the latter is washed, the impure water defiles the second hand: the washing is invalid Remedies: have another pour, pour over both hands at once, or a revi'it per hand. Again: ואם נטל כל יד מרביעית אין צריך לכל זה — the revi'it solves everything.

Séif 5 — both hands together are counted as one hand

Séif 5: from what we have written, it emerges that a hand is defiled by rubbing against the other only when one washed one hand first and then rubbed it against the other. But if he wishes to wash both hands together from the start, he may, for both are counted as one hand and do not defile each other. And even four or five people who placed their hands side by side or one atop the other are counted as one hand and do not defile each other.
Together = one hand. The problem of séif 4 arises only when one hand is washed before the other. If one washes both hands together from the start, they are כיד אחת — counted as one hand — and do not contaminate each other. This holds even for several people whose hands touch.

Séif 6 — נמלך: changing one's mind and joining the hands

Séif 6: if he washed his two hands each separately, then changed his mind (נמלך) and, at the second waters, joined his hands and poured over both at once — his hands are impure ; for by joining the hands to receive the second waters, they defiled each other through their contact. summary: the second waters did not purify the first, and on the contrary they too were defiled ; he must dry his hands and wash both together.
Do not mix two modes. If one began separately, he must not join the hands for the second waters: the contact defiles the hands (ידיו טמאות). He must then dry and start over, washing both hands together. The lesson: the same mode from start to finish.

Séif 7 — where one may touch when rubbing

Séif 7: if he rubs his hands one against the other, let him take care not to touch beyond the place where the water fell, for they defile each other.
Rub, but with measure. When rubbing, one may touch only the already-wet area: if a wet hand touches a dry spot of the other (still impure), they contaminate each other. One therefore rubs palm against palm within the area the water reached.

D. סילוק הטומאה — particular cases

Séif 8 — rubbing on the head or the wall

Séif 8: if he washed one hand and rubbed it on his head (to dry it) or on a wall, and then again touched the water that had come from his hand onto the head or the wall — the hand is impure, for that impure water returned and defiled the hand that touched it. summary: as long as he had not touched it, the rubbing purified ; but once he touched that water again, it is worse. And it has already been explained that one who pours a revi'it at once is not included in all this, for there is no impure water at all.
The water that "returns." Drying the hand on the head or a wall is permitted ; but if one touches again the water deposited there, that impure water re-defiles the hand (טמאה). The siman's refrain returns: a revi'it at once escapes all this, for

Séif 9 — a pebble or a splinter on the hand

Séif 9: when he pours the first waters on his hands, he must take care not to leave on his hand a pebble, a splinter, or any other object ; for the water purifies only the water on the hand itself, and not the water on the pebble. But if he pours a revi'it of water at once on his hand, he need not take care about this.
Nothing on the hand. A pebble (צרור) or a splinter (קיסם) carries water that is not "on the hand" and that the second waters do not purify. One therefore ensures nothing is on the hand during the first waters. And, as always, the revi'it at once exempts from this precaution.

Séif 10 — a wound with a bandage

Séif 10: one who has a wound on his hand with a bandage on it, it is enough for him to wash the rest of the hand, outside the place of the bandage ; and he must take care not to touch the bandage, so that the water on it does not return and defile the hand. Or let him pour a revi'it over the hand at once, for then the water has not become impure. One pours the first waters whether over a vessel or over the ground.
The wounded hand. A bandage (רטיה) over a wound does not invalidate the netila: one washes the rest of the hand, outside the bandage, taking care not to touch it (the water stagnating on it would re-defile the hand). Here too, the revi'it at once solves everything. Finally: the first waters may be poured either over a vessel or over the ground.
The siman in one sentence: the netila wants a proper gesture — raising the fingertips (הגבהת הידים) so the impure water does not return, pouring in one or several stages, rubbing the hands (שפשוף), with no washing by halves (אין נטילה לחצאין), and without mixing two hands begun separately ; and the key that removes it all: pouring a revi'it at once (רביעית בבת אחת), דאין שם מים טמאים כלל.

Practical cases

Case 1 — Raising the hands / pouring at once

Situation: I pour water on my hands with a keli (vessel). Must I hold my hands in a particular way?
Conduct: when pouring in small quantities, one raises the fingertips (ראשי אצבעותיו) so the water does not pass the wrist and return. But if one pours enough water to cover the hand at once — a revi'it — there is no more impure water and this precaution falls away. For the measure and order of pouring in daily life, one follows one's Rav.

Case 2 — Rubbing the hands (שפשוף)

Situation: must one rub the hands one against the other during the netila?
Conduct: yes — per the Rama, הנוטל ידיו צריך לשפשפם זו בזו, one rubs the hands one against the other, so the water reaches their entire surface. But (séif 7) one touches only the already-wet area: a wet hand must not touch a dry spot of the other. In practice one rubs palm against palm within the area the water reached ; for the details, one follows one's Rav.

Case 3 — The wounded hand with a bandage

Situation: I have a wound covered by a bandage on my hand. How do I perform the netila?
Conduct: one washes the rest of the hand, outside the place of the bandage (שלא במקום הרטיה), taking care not to touch the bandage so the water on it does not return onto the hand. One may also pour a revi'it at once. For a real case (a cast, a wide dressing, doubt about the blessing), one asks one's Rav.

Comprehension questions

Check your understanding:
  1. Why must one raise the fingertips, and which three cases are exempt (séif 1)?
  2. What are the two and three pourings, and when does a single revi'it suffice (séif 2)?
  3. What does אין נטילה לחצאין mean, and what is its exception (séif 3)?
  4. Why may one not rub one hand on the other before washing it (séif 4), whereas washing both together is permitted (séif 5)?
  5. How does one wash a wounded hand with a bandage (séif 10)?
