Why a Level 4 devoted to the Alter Rebbe ? The Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch is not a commentary on the Mehaber (מחבר) — it is a complete, self-standing Shulchan Aruch, written by the Alter Rebbe (Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Habad, disciple of the Maggid (מגיד) of Mezeritch). Its singularity : it combines halakha (הלכה) + טעמי המצוות + inner dimension in one work, and rules with a unique Talmudic rigor.
For Habad, the Alter Rebbe is הפוסק האחרון — his psak is the deciding authority. This page gathers the Rav’s way on siman קס״ב — דִּינֵי הַגְבָּהָה וְשִׁפְשׁוּף הַיָּדַיִם בִּנְטִילָה, which unfolds in the Rav over ט״ז סְעִיפִים (sixteen seifim) : from the order of netila from a revi’it, to drying and a rinse doubled as two, to soiled hands (three pours), to raising the hands up to the perek, to rubbing the hands together, to the defilement and purification of the waters, to a wound and plaster, and to the first waters — on vessels or on the ground.

The order of netila from a revi’it. The order of netila from a revi’it. If one pours the whole revi’it at once over both hands together — e.g. another pours over his hands, or he holds the vessel by his fingertips and pours over both hands as one — his hands are pure. All the more so if he has abundant water and pours a revi’it over each hand separately. But if he comes to wash each hand separately from a single revi’it — he must pour twice over each, for when he pours once over the hand the water is defiled by the hand, since it does not amount to a revi’it, which is the measure of purity for the hands; and when he pours a second time, the second waters purify the first waters and the hand. Afterward he dries it with a cloth or something else to remove the first waters entirely from the hand, out of added purity (טָהֳרָה יְתֵרָה), according to those who give this as the reason for the nigguv, as explained in siman קנ״ח.

Drying and a doubled rinse. And even if he dried on a hard thing in which water is not absorbed — e.g. he rubbed them on the wall or on his head (even on his hair, provided he did not scratch them, for then he would have to wash again, but he only rubbed over them) — although he again touches the rubbing-water, his hands are not defiled by their contact with the moisture of the first waters that were impure, since they have already been purified by the second waters. And if he poured over each hand separately a single rinse abundant as two — that is, this water has enough to wet the whole segment requiring netila twice — the waters are pure as though he had poured over them twice.

Soiled hands. And all this when his hands are clean; but if there is on them dirt, mud or any other interposing thing — he must pour over them three times: the first to remove the dirt, then first and second waters, or a revi’it at once. The water poured first is defiled by the hands, even if he poured a revi’it at once, since it did not purify the hands because of the interposing dirt; and the first waters that follow did not purify either and were themselves defiled by the hands, for the water poured first did not come at all to purify the hands but only to remove the interposition. Nevertheless they do not diminish the revi’it: even if a revi’it does not remain in the vessel when he begins the first waters that follow — this is of no consequence, for the water poured first is a need of the netila and part of it, and since there was a revi’it in the vessel at the start of his netila — that suffices. (But if there is nothing interposing on the hands, even if they are dirty and soiled, so that he must remove the filth by the netila — since it does not interpose, e.g. it is moist — it suffices with what is removed by first and second waters, or a revi’it at once, which come to purify the hands of their impurity. For the essence of the impurity of the hands was decreed only because they are busy and may have touched a soiled place; so the netila was instituted to purify them of their filth, but since impurity was decreed upon them — the first waters are defiled and are purified by the seconds.)

Raising the hands. The impurity of the hands and their purity extend only up to the segment requiring netila, not beyond it: if he poured the first waters up to the segment and the seconds beyond the segment — they were not defiled there, though they are «first» there; therefore, if they return into the segment — they do not defile the hand. But if the firsts, which were within the segment and were defiled, went out beyond the segment — even though he poured the seconds too beyond the segment, they did not purify them there; therefore, if they return into the segment — the firsts again defile the hand. Therefore the Sages said: one who washes must raise his hands upward, so that the waters beyond the segment do not return into the segment. Nevertheless, if he washes the whole hand up to the wrist-bone — he shall not raise the whole hand entirely, so that water does not flow onto the forearm to a place where it would remain even after the nigguv (for he does not dry that place, being covered by garments), and afterward, when he lowers his hand to eat with it, they would return from the forearm to his hand and defile it; rather he shall raise his fingertips, and thereby the rest of the hand will be somewhat raised, for from the fingers there is no concern that they descend onto the forearm. And he must be careful that they remain raised from the end of the netila until he dries them: for if he raises them and then lowers them — the waters that went out beyond the segment by his raising them would return into the segment. He shall therefore wash both hands at once: for if he washes one hand and raises it, and then pours from it over the second — he lowers it as he pours. And if he wishes to lower them from the start of the netila so that the first waters do not go out of the segment at all — he is permitted, provided he sees to it that the water reaches the fingertips. And if he pours a revi’it over each hand separately, or a revi’it over both at once, so that there is no impure water there at all — he need not be careful of this at all; all the more so one who immerses his hands. And some explain that what the Sages said — «one who washes must raise his hands» — does not refer to one who washes the whole hand up to the wrist, but to one who washes only the fingers, according to the view that the netila suffices up to the joint of the fingers with the palm; whereas the impurity of the hands for the firsts and their purity by the seconds extends up to the wrist-bone, so that there is concern that the firsts may have gone beyond the joint of the fingers and been defiled there — even if they did not go there from the fingers, but from the vessel — and the seconds may not have gone everywhere the firsts went, the firsts remaining in their impurity and defiling the hand if they descend to the fingers when he lowers his hands; therefore he must raise his fingertips upward from the end of the netila until he dries them. And even if he wishes to lower them from the start of the netila — it does not help, for it is impossible to be so exact as to wash precisely within the segment without the water going a little beyond his fingers, and if it went there — it was defiled there, even if it did not descend there from the fingers but from the vessel. But one who immerses his hands, or pours over them a revi’it at once, even if he poured over the fingers and it went out beyond the segment — it was not defiled there at all, since these are waters of purity. And it is by this reasoning that the custom today is to be lenient about raising the hands, for the custom is to pour over each hand three times even when clean, and there is no longer concern that the seconds may not have gone everywhere the firsts went: for if the seconds did not go there — the thirds went there.

A pouring over the whole segment. When he pours the first waters over the hand — he must be careful to pour with a single pouring over the whole segment requiring netila. Nevertheless, a literally single pouring is not required, but that he not interrupt his pouring until the water reaches the whole segment, for the hands are not pure by halves, since that is not the way of netila. And if he interrupted after washing part of the hand — that partial netila does not count for him (and even if he poured a revi’it at once — the waters were defiled, since they purified nothing), and he must pour again also over what he already washed. And if he poured only over the remaining part of the hand he had not washed — his hand is impure as before (even if this pouring too was a revi’it). And some say that if there still remains on the washed part enough to moisten (טוֹפֵחַ עַל מְנָת לְהַטְפִּיחַ) — this netila joins with what he added by washing the rest of the hand, for a liquid moist enough to moisten is a connection for purity, and this is like one netila. But it is fitting to be stringent like the first view. And all this for the firsts; but for the seconds — he washes part of his hand and then adds over the other part, even if the first part has already dried.

Rubbing the hands. After the netila of the second waters over both hands, or a revi’it at once — he shall rub his hands one against the other. And if he washed only up to the joint of the fingers with the palm — he shall be careful, when rubbing them together, that they not touch at the palm in a place where no water fell and which was not purified, for that place defiles the waters that are on the other hand by its contact with them, and the waters return and defile the hand, even though they are second waters. But if he poured a revi’it at once — he need not be careful of this, for the waters of a revi’it are waters of purity and are not defiled. Some say that «the waters of a revi’it are waters of purity» was said only where they purify, for then they are not defiled from that place — e.g. if he washed a revi’it up to the joint of the fingers and it went out to the palm, the palm does not defile them, for they purify the place to which they came; but if an impure hand touched them — it defiles them, even though they are waters of a revi’it. (And one may be lenient in a matter of rabbinic law.)

Rubbing after less than a revi’it. If he rubbed them one against the other after pouring over them first waters less than a revi’it — even if he poured over each separately a single rinse abundant as two, by which they had been purified — they are defiled again by their contact one with the other. And even the second waters do not avail to purify them, for the waters on this hand were defiled by contact with the waters of that one, and those on that one by contact with the waters of this one, and the second waters purify only the waters that were defiled by this same hand which they came to purify, not those defiled by another hand; and they return and defile the hands. Therefore he must first dry them, then wash them again properly. And even if he poured over one of them firsts and seconds, whose waters are pure — it is defiled again if the other, over which he poured only firsts, touched it. And even if it was a rinse abundant as two, the hand being pure — nevertheless the impure waters defile the waters that are on this one. Nevertheless, some say that other waters avail to purify it, since it was already entirely pure with the waters upon it.

A touch by an unwashed hand. Even if a hand that was not washed at all touched it — whether his own hand or that of another who did not wash his hands — the waters upon it are defiled by the impure hand that touched them, and he must place upon it other second waters. And if he placed upon it only the firsts alone — there is no remedy for them except by nigguv, or by hashaka to mikveh water. And the unwashed hand too has no remedy except by nigguv, for it too was defiled by the impure waters of the other, and the second waters, even a revi’it at once, do not purify an impurity coming from another hand. (But if it touched the seconds, whose impurity is only by contact — it need not be dried.) And it has already been explained that with the waters of a revi’it at once one may be lenient and say that they are not defiled at all; therefore if he poured over one hand a revi’it at once and his second hand, over which he poured nothing, touched it — his first hand is pure (and the second too, although there is on it moisture from the firsts, and this moisture upon it was defiled from it since it does not amount to a revi’it; nevertheless it is purified by first and second waters, or a revi’it at once, that he will pour over it, since its impurity is from this same hand). But if he placed over his second hand first waters less than a revi’it and it touched the one over which he placed a revi’it at once — this hand was defiled by the impure waters of the second, and he must pour over it second waters to purify it, for all impure waters defile the hand that touches them, even one entirely pure, and even in the middle of the meal.

Joining the hands as one. And all this when he washes one hand, or both each separately; but if he joins his hands one to the other and washes both as one — they are regarded entirely as one hand, and do not defile one another by their contact in the impure waters upon them from the first rinse, and he may rub them one against the other. And it is right to rub them immediately after the first rinse, in order to wash the sweat well before he places upon them the second waters to purify them. Therefore whoever washes his hands from a revi’it — either let another pour over them, or let him hold the vessel by his fingertips so as to wash both hands at once, and rub them immediately after the first rinse; for if he washes each separately — there is concern that one hand may touch the other before he places the second waters over both. But if he washes each hand from a revi’it — there is no need to be concerned about this. And even four or five persons who placed their hands one beside the other or one upon the other — are regarded as one hand and do not defile one another, as explained in siman ק״ס.

Defilement of the waters and the barza. All defilement of the waters from the hands is only in the water upon the hand at the time of netila, for then the waters are easily defiled, whether from the hand itself — like the first waters — or from another impure hand, even if they are second waters. But water that is not upon the hand, although impure hands touch it at the time of netila — does not defile them; for they only forbade giving water in one’s cupped palms to another because the palms are not a vessel, not because the water was defiled by the palms. Likewise one who comes out of the privy — he may draw in his cupped palms from the pail, and the remaining water is fit for netila. And even if the one washing himself touches, at the time of his netila, with his impure hands the water that is on the vessel or within the vessel, whether before the firsts or before the seconds — it was not defiled by his hands. Therefore a vessel pierced at its bottom, into which he inserted a stopper (בַּרְזָא) which he pushes upward and from which the water comes out onto the hand — although the stopper is moist with water and he touches it with his impure hand — they were not defiled, and he may again push it with his second hand, washed first, by pressing the stopper with his first hand which was not washed at all. Nevertheless, he must pour over each a revi’it at once, or a rinse abundant as two, so as not to need second waters; or he shall pour firsts and seconds over one hand, then firsts and seconds over the other: for if he pours the firsts over this one and that one, and then the seconds over this one and that one — he finds himself touching the stopper with his hand moist from the impure first waters, and impure waters cling to the stopper; and when he again pushes it with his second hand — it is defiled by the impure waters that clung to it, and he must dry it. Likewise he shall be careful with a vessel that has only one handle: if he holds it with his hand moist from impure waters — let him not hold it with his second hand. But if the handle was moist with the pure waters, although impure hands touched them — there is no concern to touch them, even at the time of netila. (And even the water upon impure hands is defiled only at the time of their netila for eating; but one whose hands are moist with water not at the time of their netila for eating, and one who purified his hands for eating touched them — his hands remain pure.)

A pebble and a splinter. When he pours the first waters over his hands — he must be careful that no pebble, splinter, or any other thing remains upon the hands, for the second waters purify only the water that is upon the hand, not the water that went out from the hand onto a pebble or another thing, which returns and defiles the hand that touches it. And even snow, hail and the other things that are of the nature of water, since it is not crushed and is unfit for netila — the second waters do not purify the water upon it. And if he pours a revi’it of water at once over his hands — he need not be careful of this.

A wound and plaster. One who has a wound on his hand with a plaster upon it that he cannot remove because of the pain of the wound — it suffices for him to wash the rest of the hand, not at the place of the wound. And this is not a half-netila, since he cannot wash the other half, and it resembles one whose finger was cut off, who washes the rest of the hand. However he must be careful that the water not reach the plaster, lest they return and defile the hand; and because it is hard to be careful that the water reach up to the plaster without falling upon it, he shall pour a revi’it at once over the whole hand, for then the waters are not defiled. In what case? For a plaster whose end is certainly to be removed, but which he cannot remove now — it is therefore not nullified relative to the hand (for if he could remove it whenever he wished, he would have to remove it on account of interposition; and if it were nullified relative to the hand, it would not be considered interposition). But things that do not interpose because of their smallness, which one is never particular to remove — are entirely nullified relative to the hand, and there is no concern that the water upon them return and defile the hand, for the second waters purify the water upon them like the water upon the hand itself.

First waters. First waters, that is, the waters before the meal — one takes them either upon vessels or upon the ground, for no evil spirit (רוּחַ רָעָה) rests upon them as upon the last waters after the meal. (And if he touched slop-water upon the ground or in a vessel, if he did not wash a revi’it at once — his hands were defiled, even though he poured second waters there too, for the second waters purify only the water upon his hands, not that upon the ground or in a vessel, even if the seconds are more abundant than the firsts, and even if they are waters of a revi’it. Therefore one who draws with a small vessel from a large one and holds in his hand the rim of the vessel moist with impure waters — even though he immersed the place of his grip in the waters of a revi’it when he drew from the large vessel — it availed nothing.)

The Habad practical conduct
Points of conduct flowing directly from siman קס״ב in the Alter Rebbe’s and Habad sensibility — presented at the level of the principle, referring to the Rav for the detail of the cases.
For the Habad Hassid — Siman קס״ב (דִּינֵי הַגְבָּהָה וְשִׁפְשׁוּף הַיָּדַיִם בִּנְטִילָה)
- ① Seif א. Order from a revi’it: a revi’it at once over both hands → pure; otherwise two pours over each hand.
- ② Seif ב. Nigguv even on a hard thing; a rinse abundant «as two» counts as two pours.
- ③ Seif ג. Over both hands together, a single rinse purifies only with a revi’it at once.
- ④ Seif ד. Waters remaining on the hand are impure: nigguv, or hashaka to a mikveh.
- ⑤ Seif ה. Soiled hands (an interposing thing): three pours, the first to remove the dirt.
- ⑥ Seif ו. Hagbaha: raise the fingertips so that water beyond the segment does not return.
- ⑦ Seif ז. One continuous pouring over the whole segment: no half-netila.
- ⑧ Seif ח. Rubbing: rub the hands one against the other after the seconds (or a revi’it).
- ⑨ Seif ט. Rubbed after firsts < a revi’it, they are defiled again: dry and wash anew.
- ⑩ Seif י. A touch by an unwashed hand: impure waters; remedy by nigguv or hashaka.
- ⑪ Seif יא. Joined hands washed together = one hand, without defiling one another.
- ⑫ Seif יב. Changing one’s mind and joining the hands at the seconds defiles the hands.
- ⑬ Seif יג. Water not upon the hand is not defiled; care with the בַּרְזָא and the handle.
- ⑭ Seif יד. No pebble or splinter on the hand; snow and hail uncrushed are unfit.
- ⑮ Seif טו. Wound and plaster: wash the rest of the hand, a revi’it at once, without wetting the plaster.
- ⑯ Seif טז. First waters upon vessels or upon the ground — no רוּחַ רָעָה as with the last.
