🌱 Introductory level ·
✦ ❖ ✦
This siman teaches the laws of chatzitzah (interposition) in netila: כל דבר שחוצץ בטבילה חוצץ בנטילה — anything that obstructs in the immersion (tevila) obstructs in the washing (netila), such as dirt or dough under the nail, a bandage or mud ; but a small amount one is not particular about (מיעוטו שאינו מקפיד) does not interpose. The siman states that anything one is not particular about does not interpose, that one must remove the ring (הטבעת) and how far up to wash the hand (שיעור הנטילה). Hebrew text, fluent English translation and explanation of the ד׳ seifim, with a section of practical cases.

Netilat yadayim requires clean hands: nothing may come between the water and the skin. This is the law of חציצה — drawn from the world of tevila (immersion): כל דבר שחוצץ בטבילה חוצץ בנטילה. The siman spells out its concrete cases (dirt under the nails, a bandage, a ring) and introduces the decisive criterion of the מקפיד ("what one minds"). We study here at the level of principle; for personal conduct (measures, particular cases), one refers to the custom and to the ruling of the Rav.

A. Interposition in netila — the ד׳ seifim
חֲצִיצָה — interposition — any foreign body (dirt, dough, glue, a bandage, a ring…) that comes between the water and the skin and prevents the water from reaching the hand itself. The rule is drawn from tevila (immersion in a mikveh): whatever obstructs in immersion obstructs in washing. Everything hinges on the criterion of the מקפיד: is one particular (minded to remove it) or not.
Séif 1: one must take care with chatzitzah, for anything that interposes in the tevila (immersion) interposes in the netila — for example filth under the nail that is not against the flesh, dough under the nail even against the flesh, a bandage on the skin, and street mud and potters' mud. But for a small amount about which one is not particular (מיעוטו שאינו מקפיד), there is no concern.
The principle. The netila requires the water to reach the skin without an obstruction: whatever interposes in the immersion interposes in the washing. The siman gives the classic examples: filth and dough under the nail, a bandage (רטיה), and mud. An important qualification: a small amount one does not mind (מיעוטו שאינו מקפיד) does not interpose.
Séif 2 — the criterion:
Séif 2: anything one is not particular about does not interpose. If one man is accustomed to be particular about it and another is not — for the one who is particular it interposes, for the one who is not particular it does not interpose. For dry ink interposes and wet ink does not ; and likewise the dye with which women are accustomed to color their hands for adornment does not interpose.
The מקפיד decides. It is not the substance alone that counts, but whether one minds removing it. What one is not particular about (אינו מקפיד) does not interpose ; what a given person is accustomed to mind interposes for him. Examples: dry ink interposes, wet ink does not ; the adorning dye on women's hands does not interpose, since they want it there.
Séif 3 — הסרת הטבעת: removing the ring
Séif 3: one must remove the ring from his hand at the time of netilat yadayim.
The ring. A ring (טבעת) prevents the water from reaching the skin beneath it: one removes it for the netila. The Rama (gloss) adds that this applies even if it is loose (רפוי) and even if one is not particular about it during the netila — since one is particular about it while working, so as not to soil it ; the practice is therefore to be stringent.
Séif 4 — שיעור הנטילה: how far to wash the hand
Séif 4: the measure of netilat yadayim is the whole hand up to the "reed" of the forearm (the wrist) ; and some say up to the place where the fingers join the palm. And it is fitting to follow the first opinion.
How far to wash. Two opinions on the extent to be washed: according to the first, the whole hand up to the wrist (עד הקנה של זרוע) ; according to the second (יש אומרים), only up to where the fingers join the palm. The Choulhan Aroukh rules: וראוי לנהוג כדעת הראשון — it is fitting to follow the first, that is, to wash the whole hand up to the wrist.
The siman in one sentence: the netila wants hands without a chatzitzah — whatever interposes in the immersion interposes in the washing (dirt under the nail, dough, a bandage, mud), except a small amount one is not particular about ; the decisive criterion is the מקפיד (dry vs wet ink, adorning dye) ; one removes the ring ; and one washes the whole hand up to the wrist (כדעת הראשון).
Practical cases
Case 1 — Dirt under the nails
Situation: there is dirt or a little dough under the nails. Must one be concerned about it for the netila?
Conduct: it all depends on the quantity and the מקפיד. Dough under the nail (בצק שתחת הציפורן) interposes ; a small amount of dirt one is not particular about (מיעוטו שאינו מקפיד) is no concern. But if one is particular, one must clean it. For practical conduct (trimming the nails, cleaning beforehand), one follows one's Rav.
Case 2 — The ring
Situation: one wears a ring (a wedding band, a signet). Must one remove it before washing the hands?
Conduct: yes — one removes the ring for the netila Per the Rama one removes it even if it is loose (רפוי), since one is particular about it while working. In practice it is best to make a habit of removing every ring before each netila; for the details, one follows one's Rav.
Case 3 — How far to wash the hand
Situation: how far must the water cover the hand in the netila?
Conduct: according to the first opinion (the one it is fitting to follow), one washes the whole hand up to the wrist (עד הקנה של זרוע) ; a second opinion suffices with the hand up to where the fingers join the palm. The Choulhan Aroukh concludes For the exact measure and the order of pouring, one follows one's Rav.
