This siman teaches the mayim acharonim (final waters), the washing of the fingertips at the end of the meal before Birkat haMazon. They are an obligation (חובה) — because of the salt of Sodom that can blind the eyes. One does them into a vessel and not onto the ground (רוח רעה), not with scalding water, only up to the second joint, fingers lowered. The siman sets the order of the diners, that no blessing is said, the drying, the choice of liquid, and the case of the fastidious person (istenis). Hebrew text, fluent English translation and explanation of the י seifim, with a section of practical cases.

After ordering the conduct of the bread meal (previous simanim), the Choulhan Aroukh here treats the final waters that close the meal before Birkat haMazon. The core idea: they are an obligationמים ראשונים מצוה ואחרונים חובה ('Chullin 105a) — whose reason is the salt of Sodom: שמלח סדומית יש שמסמא את העינים ('Chullin 105b). Around this core, the siman settles the manner (vessel, non-scalding water, measure, orientation of the fingers), the order of the diners, the absence of a blessing, drying, the liquid, and the customs. We study here at the level of principle ; for personal conduct, one refers to the ruling of the Rav.

A. חובת מים אחרונים — the obligation of the final waters

מַיִם אַחֲרוֹנִים — the "final waters": washing the fingertips at the end of the meal, before Birkat haMazon. The Gemara calls them חובה (an obligation), stronger than the "first waters" (מים ראשונים, a mitzva). Their reason: to remove the greasy filth (זוהמא) and, above all, the grain of salt of Sodom that could blind the eyes.

Seif 1 — mayim acharonim is obligatory

Seif 1: the final waters (mayim acharonim) are an obligation.
The mayim acharonim — washing the fingertips at the end of the meal, before Birkat haMazon — are an obligation: מים אחרונים חובה. The Gemara teaches so (מים ראשונים מצוה ואחרונים חובה, 'Chullin 105a), and gives the reason — the salt of Sodom: שמלח סדומית יש שמסמא את העינים ('Chullin 105b), lest a grain left on the fingers, brought to the eyes, blind them.

B. אופן הנטילה — how the final waters are done

Seif 2 — not onto the ground but into a vessel

Seif 2: the final waters, one does not pour onto the ground but into a vessel, because of the evil spirit (rouah ra'a) that rests upon them ; and if he has no vessel, he pours onto thin wood chips and the like.
Not upon the ground: אין נוטלין על גבי קרקע אלא בכלי, מפני רוח רעה ששורה עליהם. The Gemara ('Chullin 105b) gives the reason: משום דשריא רוח רעה עלייהו. If he has no vessel,

Seif 3 — not with scalding water

Seif 3: one does not do them with water hot enough to scald the hand, since it softens the hands and does not remove the greasy filth (zuhama).
Scalding water is excluded: אין נוטלין בחמין שהיד נכוית בהם, מפני שמפעפעין את הידים ואין מעבירין את הזוהמא. So too in the Gemara ('Chullin 105): מפני שחמין מפעפעין את הידים ואין מעבירין את הזוהמא.

Seif 4 — up to the second joint of the fingers

Seif 4: one need only wash up to the second joint of the fingers.
The measure is modest: אין צריך ליטול אלא עד פרק שני של אצבעות — above that joint the meal's soiling does not reach, so there is no need to wash further.

Seif 5 — lowering the fingertips

Seif 5: one must lower the tips of his fingers downward, so that the filth (zuhama) runs off.
Orientation matters: צריך שישפיל ראשי אצבעותיו למטה כדי שתרד הזוהמא — the fingers are tilted down so the filth runs off and does not flow back onto the clean hand.

C. סדר המסובין — the order of the diners

Seif 6 — the order of the diners

Seif 6: if the diners are many — up to five, they begin from the one who blesses (the mevarech) ; and if more, they begin from the youngest ; they wash in the order of their seating, and do not honor one another to wash, until they reach the last five ; and once only five remain who have not washed, they begin from the mevarech.
The washing order depends on the number: אם המסובין רבים עד חמשה מתחילין מן המברך, but ואם הם יותר מתחילין מן הקטן. They wash דרך ישיבתן, without ceding honor (soiled hands), until the last five ; then מתחילין מן המברך, so the mevarech is ready to bless right after.

D. אין מברכין — no blessing

Seif 7 — no blessing

Seif 7: no blessing whatsoever is recited over the final waters.
Despite being obligatory, אין מברכין שום ברכה על מים האחרונים — unlike the first waters (netilat yadayim for bread), the final waters carry no blessing.

E. ניגוב ומיני משקים — drying and liquids

Seif 8 — drying

Seif 8: some say the final waters do not require drying ; and according to the Rambam, one dries and then blesses.
Two views on drying: יש אומרים שמים אחרונים אינם צריכים נגוב, whereas ולהרמב״ם מנגב ואח״כ מברך — per the Rambam one wipes the hands before Birkat haMazon.

Seif 9 — with any liquid

Seif 9: the final waters may be done with all kinds of liquids.
When there is no water, מים אחרונים נוטלים בכל מיני משקים — any liquid that removes the filth is valid for mayim acharonim.

F. מנהג ואסטניס — customs and the fastidious person

Seif 10 — custom and the istenis

Seif 10: some do not have the custom to do the final waters ; and even for those who practice it, a fastidious person (istenis) accustomed to washing his hands after the meal — for him the hands are considered soiled, and he must wash his hands before Birkat haMazon.
The siman closes with a custom: יש שאין נוהגין ליטול מים אחרונים. But the istenis is the exception: אדם שהוא אסטניס ורגיל ליטול ידיו אחר הסעודה — for him הוו ידים מזוהמות, and וצריך ליטול ידיו קודם ברכת המזון.
The siman in one sentence: the mayim acharonim are an obligation (the salt of Sodom) ; one does them into a vessel and not onto the ground (רוח רעה), not with scalding water, up to the second joint, fingers lowered ; among many one follows the order of the diners ; no blessing is said ; drying may be dispensed with (the Rambam dries) and any liquid may be used ; and though some have not the custom, the istenis must wash, קודם ברכת המזון.

Practical cases

Case 1 — Water in a vessel at the table

Situation: at the end of the meal, water is brought for the mayim acharonim. May I pour it directly onto the tablecloth or the floor?
Conduct: no — אין נוטלין על גבי קרקע אלא בכלי (seif 2), because of the evil spirit. One washes into a vessel (a small mayim-acharonim bowl) ; failing that, onto chips or anything that separates from the ground. For details, one follows one's Rav.

Case 2 — Many around the table

Situation: we are many and wish to do the mayim acharonim before Birkat haMazon. With whom do we begin?
Conduct: by the number — עד חמשה מתחילין מן המברך ; beyond that, מתחילין מן הקטן, in seating order (seif 6), until the last five, where one begins again from the mevarech so he blesses at once. In practice, one follows one's Rav.

Case 3 — A fastidious person

Situation: I am used to washing my hands after the meal, and it disturbs me to bless with greasy hands. Am I bound by the mayim acharonim?
Conduct: yes — the istenis cannot be exempt: הוו ידים מזוהמות וצריך ליטול ידיו קודם ברכת המזון (seif 10). Even where others do not practice it, one whom it disturbs must wash before blessing. In practice, one follows one's Rav.

Comprehension questions

Check your understanding:
  1. Why are the mayim acharonim an obligation (חובה), and what is the reason of the salt of Sodom (seif 1)?
  2. Why are they not done onto the ground, and what does one do lacking a vessel (seif 2)?
  3. How far must one wash, and why lower the fingers (seifim 4-5)?
  4. How is the order of the diners determined by their number (seif 6)?
  5. Is a blessing recited over the mayim acharonim, and what of the istenis (seifim 7, 10)?
