Level 4 — Daat HaRav (Alter Rebbe) — Siman קפ״א · דִּינֵי מַיִם אַחֲרוֹנִים

The Alter Rebbe’s way on דִּינֵי מַיִם אַחֲרוֹנִים : a mitzvah on account of holiness ; vessel and ruach ra’a ; hot water ; measure and place ; lowering the fingers ; order of the diners and “tekef” ; drying ; kinds of liquid ; and customs — in the Habad sensibility.

Why a Level 4 devoted to the Alter Rebbe ? The Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch is not a commentary on the Mehaber (מחבר) — it is a complete, self-standing Shulchan Aruch, written by the Alter Rebbe (Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Habad, disciple of the Maggid (מגיד) of Mezeritch). Its singularity : it combines halakha (הלכה) + טעמי המצוות + inner dimension in one work, and rules with a unique Talmudic rigor.

For Habad, the Alter Rebbe is הפוסק האחרון — his psak is the deciding authority. This page gathers the Rav’s way on siman קפ״א — דִּינֵי מַיִם אַחֲרוֹנִים, which unfolds in the Rav over ט׳ סְעִיפִים (nine seifim) : from the mitzvah of the final waters on account of holiness and the safeguard against Sodom salt, to the vessel required because of the ruach ra’a, to hot water, to the measure and place of the washing, to the lowering of the fingers, to the order of the diners and the “tekef” that joins the washing to the blessing, to drying, to the usable liquids, up to the various customs and the final exhortation not to be lax with mayim aharonim.

The Habad practical conduct

Points of conduct flowing directly from siman קפ״א in the Alter Rebbe’s and Habad sensibility — presented at the level of the principle, referring to the Rav for the detail of the cases.

For the Habad Hassid — Siman קפ״א (דִּינֵי מַיִם אַחֲרוֹנִים)

  • Seif א. Mayim aharonim are a mitzvah of holiness — to bless with unsoiled hands — and a safeguard against Sodom salt that blinds. Nowadays one does not bless over them, since the mitzvah is no longer performed as of old (the fragrant oil after the washing).
  • Seif ב. One does not pour mayim aharonim onto the bare ground but into a vessel (or onto something that interposes), because of the ruach ra’a. Where people do not pass — such as under the table — it is permitted.
  • Seif ג. One does not wash with hot water in which the hand recoils (it softens the hands without removing the filth); some forbid even warm water, but one may be lenient (a rabbinic matter).
  • Seif ד. One washes only up to the second joint, once, with no minimum measure of water — unlike mayim rishonim (at least a reviʿit).
  • Seif ה. One lowers the fingertips so the filth goes down; one therefore does not wash the hands inside the vessel but pours upon them (except the intermediate washings between dairy and meat).
  • Seif ו. With many diners, one begins with the youngest (at the end of the table); the last five begin with the one who blesses. “Tekef” (immediately upon the washing, the blessing) means within the span of the washing of four diners. One pours the cup beforehand, and does not speak in between.
  • Seif ז. Mayim aharonim require no drying; some require it for the one who blesses alone, but one may be lenient (see siman קע״ג).
  • Seif ח. One may pour them with any liquid that removes the filth (oil, honey, milk), except wine (too important). Water unfit for mayim rishonim remains fit for the aharonim.
  • Seif ט. Some no longer take them (no Sodom salt, indifference to filth); but the fastidious one (istenis) who washes his hands must do so before blessing, and it is proper for every person to be careful with mayim aharonim.

⚠ This section presents the Habad conduct based on the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch, siman קפ״א (the real text is reproduced in §1). It does not replace a rabbinic decision for a particular case. For any concrete question — the practice of mayim aharonim, the vessel, the liquids, the order of the diners, the drying — consult your Rav, and for Habad, a Rav of Habad.
