Why a Level 4 devoted to the Alter Rebbe ? The Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch is not a commentary on the Mehaber (מחבר) — it is a complete, self-standing Shulchan Aruch, written by the Alter Rebbe (Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Habad, disciple of the Maggid (מגיד) of Mezeritch). Its singularity : it combines halakha (הלכה) + טעמי המצוות + inner dimension in one work, and rules with a unique Talmudic rigor.
For Habad, the Alter Rebbe is הפוסק האחרון — his psak is the deciding authority. This page gathers the Rav’s way on siman קצ״א — אִם הַפּוֹעֲלִים מְחֻיָּבִים לְבָרֵךְ (whether workers are obligated to recite birkat hamazon), which in the Rav takes סְעִיף אֶחָד (a single seif) : hired day-laborers shorten birkat hamazon so as not to interrupt the householder’s work — the first blessing in full, birkat ha’aretz absorbing “bonei Yerushalayim,” the fourth blessing omitted entirely — except when the meal itself is their whole wage or when the householder reclines with them ; and the practice of today, where all four blessings are always recited.

The Alter Rebbe’s own text (Sefaria source Shulchan_Arukh_HaRav,_Orach_Chayim.191), followed by our English translation. The siman comprises a single seif (סְעִיף אֶחָד ; seif א → .191.1).

Day-laborers who do work for a householder shorten birkat hamazon, so as not to interrupt the householder’s work, since during birkat hamazon one cannot engage in work, as explained in siman 183. How so? The first blessing as it should be; for the second, he opens with birkat ha’aretz, includes “bonei Yerushalayim” within it, and closes with birkat ha’aretz — because birkat ha’aretz and “bonei Yerushalayim” resemble one another, therefore he combines them into a single blessing, for the number of the blessings is not from the Torah: with a single blessing that includes the substance of all three one fulfills one’s Torah obligation, as explained in siman 168; only that Moshe, Yehoshua, David and Shlomo instituted the formula of the three, and because of the interruption of the householder’s work they were lenient. And the fourth blessing, whose essence is of rabbinic origin (divrei soferim) — the workers do not say it at all: whether they bless themselves or listen from another who leads the zimun and recites birkat hamazon as it should be, they rise to their work as soon as he concludes the blessing of Jerusalem.
In what case is this said? When they receive wages for their work in addition to their meal; but if they receive no wages other than the meal they eat alone — they recite all four blessings as they should be. Likewise, if the householder reclines with them at the meal, even though they receive wages in addition to the meal — they recite all four blessings.
And nowadays one always recites all four blessings, because it is not people’s way to be particular about this, and it is presumably on that understanding that workers are hired: that they recite all four blessings.

The practical Habad conduct
Points of conduct that follow directly from siman קצ״א in the sensibility of the Alter Rebbe and Habad — presented at the level of principle, referring to the Rav for the detail of cases.
For the Habad Hassid — Siman קצ״א (אִם הַפּוֹעֲלִים מְחֻיָּבִים לְבָרֵךְ)
- ① The principle (seif א). Hired day-laborers working for a householder shorten birkat hamazon, so as not to waste the householder’s working time — since during birkat hamazon one cannot engage in work (siman 183).
- ② The shortened form (seif א). The first blessing in full; for the second, one opens with birkat ha’aretz, includes “bonei Yerushalayim” within it and closes with birkat ha’aretz — the two resemble one another, and the number of blessings is not from the Torah (a single blessing “me’ein sheloshtan” discharges the Torah obligation — siman 168).
- ③ What the leniency does not undo (seif א). The formula of the three blessings was indeed instituted by Moshe, Yehoshua, David and Shlomo; it is only because of the loss of the householder’s work that the Sages were lenient.
- ④ The fourth blessing (seif א). Its essence being of rabbinic origin, the workers do not say it at all — whether they bless themselves or discharge their duty by listening to the one leading the zimun: they rise to their work as soon as he concludes the blessing of Jerusalem.
- ⑤ When one does not shorten (seif א). If their only wage is the meal itself, or if the householder reclines with them at the meal (even if they receive wages in addition to the meal) — they recite all four blessings as they should be.
- ⑥ The practice of today (seif א). All four blessings are now always recited: people are no longer particular about this, and it is presumably on that understanding that workers are hired.
⚠ This section presents the Habad conduct grounded in the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch, siman קצ״א (the real text reproduced in §1). It does not replace a rabbinic decision for a particular case. For any concrete question — a worker or employee during working hours, shortening birkat hamazon, the fourth blessing — consult your Rav, and for Habad, a Habad Rav.
