Three men eat together; two have finished, the third has not. Who waits for whom? This very short siman answers with an asymmetry that surprises at first and illuminates afterwards: one interrupts for two — even against his will; two do not interrupt for one. It then measures the thing: how far the interruption must go, and how one resumes the meal afterwards. Hebrew text, translation and explanation of the ב׳ seifim, with a section of practical cases.

The preceding siman asked on whom a zimun is made. This one asks when it is made, where the diners do not finish together. The Gemara laid down a rule in two halves: (Berakhot 45b). It even noted that a master had done otherwise — והא רב פפא אפסיק ליה לאבא מר בריה איהו וחד (Berakhot 45b) — and answered that this was not the law but generosity: (Berakhot 45b). Our siman is nothing but that rule set down as halakha, with its measure. We study here at the level of principle; for personal conduct, one refers to the ruling of the Rav.
📑 Study outline
A. אחד מפסיק על כרחו לב׳ (seif 1) — one interrupts for the two

C. עד היכן מפסיק (seif 2) — the measure of the interruption
1-3. Practical cases and comprehension questions
A. אחד מפסיק על כרחו לב׳ — one interrupts for the two
הַמַּפְסִיק — the one who interrupts. This is not abandoning the meal nor leaving the table: it is suspending one's eating for as long as the zimun takes, and answering it. The word matters, for it is from it that the Rishonim derive that the meal is not broken and that no new blessing is therefore needed afterwards — as the Tur writes in the name of the Rosh:
Seif 1 — three who ate together: one interrupts for the two, even against his will
Seif 1: three who ate together — one of them interrupts, even against his will, for the other two, and recites with them the zimun blessing. And even if he did not wish to interrupt, they make the zimun on him, whether he answers or not, as long as he is standing there. But two are not obliged to interrupt for one; therefore the obligation of zimun does not take effect until they consent to interrupt for the one and to bless. And if they did not wish to interrupt and he made the zimun on them, he accomplished nothing. And if they did not wish to interrupt, he too may not bless and go out to the market until the two have finished and he makes the zimun on them — for he has already become obligated in the zimun, and how could he bless without a zimun?
It comes straight from the Gemara: (Berakhot 45b), and the Tur opens with exactly the same words:
And even if he refuses: The Beit Yossef reports it thus in the name of the Rashba:
summary: two distinct things are said here. The first is a duty laid upon him: to interrupt and to answer. The second is a fact no longer in his hands: his mere presence at the table makes him count towards the others' zimun, whether he plays along or not. The zimun is formed on the table, not on goodwill.
B. אין שנים חייבים להפסיק לאחד — the other side of the rule
The other side: אבל שנים אין חייבים להפסיק לאחד (שו״ע או״ח ר׳:א), with its immediate consequence: הלכך אין חיוב זימון חל עד שיתרצו להפסיק לאחד ולברך (שו״ע או״ח ר׳:א). summary: so long as the two do not consent, there is not even an obligation of zimun to be disobeyed — the obligation is born only of their agreement.
And if he forces their hand? A zimun said over people who do not consent is not a defective zimun: it is a zimun that never happened.
The trap closes on him: אף הוא אינו רשאי לברך ולצאת לשוק עד שיגמרו השנים ויזמן עליהם (שו״ע או״ח ר׳:א), and the Mechaber gives the reason in so many words: שהרי כבר נתחייב הוא בזימון והיאך יברך בלא זימון (שו״ע או״ח ר׳:א). summary: by sitting down as one of three he made himself a debtor of the zimun; he cannot discharge that debt with a solitary blessing.
Rav Papa's gesture. The Gemara objects that a master did interrupt, two for one — והא רב פפא אפסיק ליה לאבא מר בריה איהו וחד (Berakhot 45b) — and answers: שאני רב פפא דלפנים משורת הדין הוא דעבד (Berakhot 45b). The Tur puts it his own way: it is not done אם לא שירצו לעשות לו לפנים משורת הדין (טור או״ח ר׳). summary: the law does not require it; generosity permits it.
summary: the asymmetry is no caprice. The one who has not finished merely loses some time; the two who have finished, were they made to wait, would lose the zimun itself and be held at the table indefinitely. The halakha therefore places the burden where it weighs least.
C. עד היכן מפסיק — the measure of the interruption
Seif 2 — he need only interrupt until they say barukh shé-akhalnu mi-shelo
Seif 2: he need only interrupt until they say "Barukh shé-akhalnu mi-shelo," etc. Gloss (Rama): and some say he must interrupt until they say "ha-Zan et ha-kol," and such is the custom (the Rosh, Tosafot, Rabbenu Yona in the name of the Halakhot Gedolot, and the Tur). And if he intended to return and eat bread — even if in the end he did not eat afterwards — when he wishes to bless he begins from the start of the blessing ha-Zan; and all the more so if he did return and eat (Rabbenu Yona, chapter "Sheloshah shé-akhlu") (Tur). And he resumes and finishes his meal without a blessing at the outset.
The Mechaber's measure: אינו צריך להפסיק אלא עד שיאמר ברוך שאכלנו משלו וכו׳ (שו״ע או״ח ר׳:ב) — that is, until the zimun formula itself, and no further.
The Rama's measure: וי״א שצריך להפסיק עד שיאמר הזן את הכל וכן נוהגין (רמ״א או״ח ר׳:ב) — that is, until the end of the first blessing of Birkat haMazon.
Where does the split come from? From a question of the Gemara: The Tur ruled like the latter — ומפסיק עד שיסיימו ברכת הזן (טור או״ח ר׳), והלכה כרב ששת (טור או״ח ר׳) — and the Beit Yossef gives the reason for that choice: ופסק כרב ששת באיסורי (בית יוסף או״ח ר׳). The Mechaber followed the Rif and the Rambam, and the Beit Yossef concludes:
summary: the two views are not measuring the same thing. For the first, the zimun is the formula; what follows already belongs to each man's own Birkat haMazon. For the second, a whole blessing is needed for the interruption to be visible and for it to be seen that the zimun was made on him. The custom follows the Rama.
He repeats neither the washing of hands nor המוציא: he picks up where he left off.
It was not obvious. The Tur records the contrary opinion: כתב רב האי שאחד שמפסיק לשנים צריך לחזור ולברך המוציא (טור או״ח ר׳) — for interrupting would look like leaving the meal. And he holds like the Rosh: אלא חוזרים וגומרים סעודתן בלא ברכה (טור או״ח ר׳). summary: he neither moved from his place nor turned his mind from the meal; there was no break.
And the Birkat haMazon afterwards? The Tur had already stated the converse case: The Gemara had raised the question — להיכן הוא חוזר (Berakhot 46b) — and settled it: רב זביד משמיה דאביי אמר חוזר לראש ורבנן אמרי למקום שפסק והלכתא למקום שפסק (Berakhot 46b).
The siman in one sentence: אחד מפסיק על כרחו לב׳ ועונה עמהם ברכת זימון, and מזמנין עליו בין עונה בין אינו עונה כל שהוא עומד שם; but שנים אין חייבים להפסיק לאחד, and if they refuse, אף הוא אינו רשאי לברך ולצאת לשוק; he interrupts עד שיאמר ברוך שאכלנו משלו — and, per the Rama's custom, עד שיאמר הזן את הכל — and then וחוזר וגומר סעודתו בלא ברכה בתחילה.
Practical cases
Case 1 — My two companions have finished and I have not: must I stop?
Situation: we are three at table. The other two have finished and want to bless; I am still eating.
Conduct: I interrupt and answer with them — אחד מפסיק על כרחו לב׳ ועונה עמהם ברכת זימון (שו״ע או״ח ר׳:א) — and even if I would rather carry on, ואפילו לא רצה להפסיק מזמנין עליו בין עונה בין אינו עונה כל שהוא עומד שם (שו״ע או״ח ר׳:א). For practice, one follows one's Rav.
Case 2 — One diner has finished and wants to leave; the two of us have not finished
Situation: one of the three wants to get up and go; the other two are still in the middle of their meal. Must they stop for him?
Conduct: they are not obliged — אבל שנים אין חייבים להפסיק לאחד (שו״ע או״ח ר׳:א) — and as long as they do not consent, אין חיוב זימון חל עד שיתרצו להפסיק לאחד ולברך (שו״ע או״ח ר׳:א). If they do consent, it is a fine thing; the Tur calls it But the one leaving may not therefore bless alone and go: The Beit Yossef qualifies this for a pressing case, in the name of Rav Hai Gaon: For practice, one follows one's Rav.
Case 3 — How far must I stop, and must I bless again before resuming?
Situation: I interrupted for the zimun; from what point may I go back to eating, and must I say a fresh blessing over the bread?
Conduct: per the Mechaber, אינו צריך להפסיק אלא עד שיאמר ברוך שאכלנו משלו וכו׳ (שו״ע או״ח ר׳:ב); and per the custom recorded by the Rama, וי״א שצריך להפסיק עד שיאמר הזן את הכל וכן נוהגין (רמ״א או״ח ר׳:ב). Afterwards, no new blessing: For practice, one follows one's Rav.
