Siman ר״ז · The blessing that closes

דין ברכה אחרונה על הפירות — one single final blessing for everything that is neither bread nor the five species (ברכ׳ אחרונה שלהם בורא נפשות רבות), one recitation for all the kinds eaten (מברך לאחר כולם ברכה אחת), the wording of the blessing and its meaning (וחסרונם על כל מה שברא), and the seal without the Name (חותם בה בלא שם, ברוך חי העולמים)

Every preceding siman taught how to distinguish: which blessing for the fruit of the tree, which for the vegetable, which for what does not grow from the earth. This one, in a single sentence, does the opposite: it gathers. For the blessing said afterwards knows nothing of those borders — the apple, the carrot, the egg, the fish and the glass of water all close on the very same formula. The Hebrew text, an English translation and an explanation of the סעיף אחד, with a section of practical cases.

Subject: The final blessing over fruits — the reach of the blessing, its wording, one blessing for all the kinds, and the seal without the Name

There are three blessings before eating, and only three after: ברכת המזון for bread, ברכה מעין שלש for the seven species, and — for absolutely everything else — בורא נפשות רבות. This siman is the siman of that third one. The Tour gives the key in a single line: שינוי ברכות שבין פרי העץ ופרי האדמה ובין דבר שאין גידולו מן הארץ היינו דוקא בברכה ראשונה אבל ברכה אחרונה שוה בכולם (טור או״ח סימן ר״ז). summary: the opening blessing looks at where the food comes from; the closing one looks at what it did for the person — and from that angle they are all alike. We study here at the level of principle; for personal practice one follows the ruling of one's Rav.

📑 Plan of the study

A. היקף הברכה האחרונה (the seif) — who falls under בורא נפשות רבות and who does not
B. נוסח הברכה — the wording of the blessing and what it says
C. ברכה אחת לכל המינים — one recitation for everything eaten and drunk
D. החתימה בלא שם — why one says ברוך חי העולמים without the Name
1-3. Practical cases and comprehension questions

A. היקף הברכה האחרונה — one blessing for all the rest

בְּרָכָה אַחֲרוֹנָה — the blessing recited after eating or drinking. The Guemara fixes its perimeter through a discussion in three stages: אמר רב יצחק בר אבדימי משום רבינו על הביעא ועל מיני קופרא בתחלה מברך שהכל ולבסוף בורא נפשות רבות וכו׳ (ברכות מ״ד ע״ב) — but for him the vegetable is not included, אבל ירקא לא ורבי יצחק אמר אפילו ירקא אבל מיא לא ורב פפא אמר אפילו מיא (ברכות מ״ד ע״ב). And Rav Ashi concludes with the widest practice: The Beit Yossef testifies that this is indeed our usage:

The seif —

The law of the final blessing over fruits. And it contains a single seif: fruits of the tree — apart from the five species —, all fruits of the ground and vegetables, and everything whose growth is not from the earth: their final blessing is borei nefashot rabbot. And if he ate of all these kinds, he recites one single blessing after all of them. And this blessing is sealed without the Name, sealing thus: barukh chei ha'olamim.
Three categories that were three separate worlds for the opening blessing — and are one single thing for the closing one.
What "the five species" means here: not the five grains but the five fruits of the Land of Israel, which take the ברכה מעין שלש studied in siman 208. The Rambam names them:
"What does not grow from the earth": the Rambam lists them — דברים שאין גדולן מן הארץ כגון בשר וגבינה ודגים וביצים ומים וחלב ודבש וכיוצא בהן בתחלה מברך שהכל ולבסוף בורא נפשות רבות (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ח הלכה א). And the Mishnah Berurah stresses that water itself is included:
A limit not to be forgotten: drinking without thirst obliges nothing, neither before nor after — והשותה מים שלא לרוות צמאו אינו טעון ברכה לא לפניו ולא לאחריו (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ח הלכה א). summary: the final blessing presupposes a benefit received, not a mere gesture.
This is the Michna cited by the Guemara:
If one used the wrong formula: the Mishnah Berurah gives the position after the fact — ובדיעבד אם בירך עליהם על העץ ועל פרי העץ יצא (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ז:א), and the Shaarei Teshuvah reports the same: אם בירך על תפוחים וכיוצא ברכה אחרונה על העץ ועל פה״ע יצא בדיעבד (שערי תשובה ר״ז:א). For practice, one follows one's Rav.

B. נוסח הברכה — the wording of the blessing

The Talmud Bavli quotes the opening of the blessing in another passage: The Tour gives the full text:
The wording adopted by the Mishnah Berurah: The Magen Avraham writes the same with two variants:
What the blessing is saying — the Tour explains it in two movements: פירוש הברכה בורא נפשות רבות וכל מה שהם חסרים (טור או״ח סימן ר״ז), then ועל כל שאר הדברים שברא בעולם שלא היו הנפשות חסרים מהם אם לא בראן שאינן אלא להתענג בהן להחיות נפש כל חי (טור או״ח סימן ר״ז). summary: one praises first for the necessary, then for what was not necessary at all and was created only for delight.
The Beit Yossef defines the word
The Mishnah Berurah sums up the division: The Taz writes it in the same terms:
Two points of pronunciation: the Mishnah Berurah notes that the ח׳ of חי העולמים is vocalised with a tsere — והחי״ת נקוד בצירי שהוא דבוק (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ז:ג) — and on the variant שבראת it leaves each to his usage: וי״א שבראת ונהרא נהרא ופשטיה (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ז:ג). The Kaf haChaim attests the opposite usage in the Land of Israel: Each follows the tradition of his fathers and the ruling of his Rav.

The Tour had given the reason, which is simply the principle of the siman applied:
The exact reach: ר״ל דא״צ לברך בורא נפשות עכאו״א דהיא שייכא על כולם ואפילו אכל ושתה יצא בברכה אחת (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ז:ד); and the Magen Avraham: והוא הדין אם אכל ושתה (מגן אברהם ר״ז:א). summary: eating and drinking are not two separate accounts — one blessing closes both.
The required measure stays distinct: the Kaf haChaim specifies that each category keeps its own threshold — והיינו כגון שאכל כזית ושתה רביעית דברכה אחת פוטרתן אבל אם אכל פחות מכזית ושתה פחות מרביעית אין מצטרפין לברך עליהן אפילו ברכה אחת (כף החיים ר״ז:ו), and the Mishnah Berurah refers for this to siman 210: ואם מצטרפין שניהם יחד לכשיעור עיין לקמן בסימן ר״י במ״ב (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ז:ד).
A far-reaching consequence: ואם אכל ושתה הרבה מינים ובירך ברכה אחרונה בנ״ר אדעתא למפטר רק מין אחד פטר הכל ואסור לברך שוב על שאר המינים (כף החיים ר״ז:ז). summary: once said, the blessing has covered everything before him, even if he had only one food in mind. For practice, one follows one's Rav.
And where the quantity is in doubt: The Kaf haChaim offers a practical way out:

D. החתימה — ברוך חי העולמים, without the Name

The ruling:
Where the hesitation comes from: the two Talmuds do not say the same thing. The Tour: ובגמרא דידן אינו מזכיר בה חתימה אבל בירושלמי חותם בא״י חי העולמים (טור או״ח סימן ר״ז) — and his father the Rosh followed the latter: וכן היה נוהג א״א הרא״ש ז״ל (טור או״ח סימן ר״ז). The Yerushalmi indeed reads:
At the other extreme: the Beit Yossef reports those who did not seal at all — ועל דבר החתימה כתב רבינו ירוחם שלא נהגו לסיים בה (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״ז) — and the Rashba's answer to his questioner: תשובה אתה שמעת אני לא שמעתי ולא ראיתי מי שחותם בה (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״ז).
The middle way, which is ours: the disciples of Rabbeinu Yonah — ונראה למורי הרב שזה מטבע קצר הוא וכיון שלא הוזכר בתלמוד שלנו לא נחתום בשם מספק (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״ז), והנכון לומר חתימת הברכה בלא שם ונימא בא״י בורא נפשות רבות וחסרונן על כל מה שבראת להחיות בהם נפש כל חי ברוך חי העולמים (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״ז) — and the Beit Yossef concludes: וכן ראוי לנהוג (בית יוסף או״ח סימן ר״ז).
The Taz explains it in a word: And the Mishnah Berurah sets out the two positions that divide the question: שי״א שהיא מטבע ארוכה וי״א שתקנו בה מטבע קצר בלא חתימה ולכך טוב שיחתום אבל בלא שם (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ז:ה); it notes the view of the Vilna Gaon and the actual usage: ודעת הגר״א לחתום בה בשם כמו שמוזכר בירושלמי ומ״מ העולם לא נהגו כן (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ז:ה).
The siman in one sentence: what separates foods before eating no longer separates them afterwards. The fruit of the tree apart from the five species, the fruit of the ground, the vegetable, and even what does not grow from the earth — ברכ׳ אחרונה שלהם בורא נפשות רבות. And from that unity the other two lines of the seif follow: since the blessing is one, מברך לאחר כולם ברכה אחת; and since its wording remained divided between the two Talmuds, one keeps the seal and withdraws the Name — חותם בה בלא שם שיחתום כך ברוך חי העולמים.

Practical cases

Case 1 — A plate of fruit, some cheese and a glass of water

Situation: one ate an apple, a piece of cheese, then drank water. How many final blessings?
Practice: one only. All three fall under the same line of the seif — פירות האילן חוץ מחמשת המינים וכל פירות אדמה וירקות וכל דבר שאין גידולו מן הארץ ברכ׳ אחרונה שלהם בורא נפשות רבות (שו״ע או״ח ר״ז:א) —, water included: כלל בזה אפילו מים (משנה ברורה, מ״ב ר״ז:ב). Each category must still reach its own measure: For practice, one follows one's Rav.

Case 2 — Dates and grapes among the other fruits

Situation: on the table there are apples and bananas, but also dates and grapes. Will the final blessing be the same?
Practice: no — this is precisely the exception the seif reserves: The five fruits of the Land of Israel take the ברכה מעין שלש, as the Rambam writes: והם ענבים ורמונים ותאנים וזיתים ותמרים שהוא מברך עליהן בסוף ברכה אחת מעין שלש (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ח הלכה א). The Tour says the same thing differently, speaking of the fruit שאינו משבעת המינין (טור או״ח סימן ר״ז) — the two formulations meet, since the two grains of the seven species are not tree fruit. The details of measures and combinations are in siman 208. For practice, one follows one's Rav.

Case 3 — How to end the blessing aloud

Situation: one reaches the end of borei nefashot. Should one say "barukh Ata Hashem chei ha'olamim" or only "barukh chei ha'olamim"?
Practice: the Choulhan Aroukh ruled: וברכה זו חותם בה בלא שם שיחתום כך ברוך חי העולמים (שו״ע או״ח ר״ז:א) — hence without the Name. This is the position of the disciples of Rabbeinu Yonah taken up by the Beit Yossef: The Mishnah Berurah notes that the Vilna Gaon held otherwise but that the practice did not follow him: For practice, one follows one's Rav.

Comprehension questions

Check your understanding:
  1. Why does the blessing said afterwards not follow the categories of the blessing said beforehand?
  2. What exactly do חמשת המינים designate in our seif, and where is their law treated?
  3. Does water fall under According to which opinion in the Guemara, and why is it retained?
  4. What are the two movements of the blessing's wording, according to the Tour and the Beit Yossef?
  5. Why does one seal ברוך חי העולמים without the Name, when the Yerushalmi mentions it?
